5 out of 5 stars I Yi, Yi, Yi, Yi I LIKE HER VERY MUCH !!!!.......2007-03-28

Carmen Miranda possessed a natural charm and wit about her that made her songs amusing and thoroughly enjoyable both at the same time. Oh sure, in retrospect her costumes and some of her songs also have that campy feel to them; but she's great entertainment nonetheless and you will enjoy this album.

The CD starts with the ethnic Brazilian "Mama Eu Quero (I Want My Mama)" from the film Down Argentine Way; and Carmen sings this number to perfection with a male backup chorus. The guitars shine on this number, too! "South American Way" is also from Down Argentine Way; Carmen sings this with great sensitivity and the guitars again carry the bulk of the musical arrangement. The male chorus again backs up Carmen very well.

Then there's the classic and witty ballad entitled "I Yi, Yi, Yi Yi (I Like You Very Much)" written by the great Harry Warren with Mack Gordon. This playful and relentlessly joyous number will make you want to jump up and dance wherever you are--a great love ballad that's a lot of fun, too! Harry Warren and Mack Gordon collaborated again to write the next song entitled "Chica Chica Boom Chic;" Carmen sings this passionately with a lot of drums and percussion to carry the musical arrangement. The Brazilian beat is infectiously catchy even all these decades later. Great!

Other great numbers on this CD include "A Week-End In Havana" by Warren and Gordon; Carmen sings this well and infuses it with a playful romantic flavor that few Latin American artists could ever do. "A Week-End In Havana" comes from the film Weekend In Havana; and you also get another song from the same film entitled "The Man With The Lollipop Song." Carmen sings this to perfection with a lush musical arrangement and an awesome male chorus, too.

One special treat is Carmen performing "Chattanooga Choo-Choo" in Portuguese; this surprise treatment of an American standard works very well! Carmen belts this one out passionately and she makes the lyrics fit so nicely into the musical arrangement. Excellent! "Tico Tico" is a South American standard that Carmen bats out with so much high octane energy you'd better fasten your seat belts before you listen to this track!

The CD ends beautifully with Carmen collaborating with The Andrews Sisters for two great numbers entitled "The Matador" and "Cuanto Le Gusta." Although Carmen did a few numbers with The Andrews Sisters, their work together flows so well that it's a crime that they didn't work together much more often. For "The Matador" the Andrews Sisters start off the song and then there's a back and forth duet between Carmen Miranda and The Andrews Sisters. Oooh, how they harmonize so well! Last but certainly not least, "Cuanto Le Gusta" begins with a great musical flourish and again Carmen and The Andrews Sisters do a magnificent duet to make this a very special track to end the CD.

The liner notes give you an excellent essay about Carmen's life and career written by Peter Dempsey; and you get the song credits, too. The cover art is good, too.

Carmen Miranda's memory may have faded somewhat because of the passage of time but don't let that stop you from getting this terrific CD. Even if you've never seen any of the films Carmen was in you can easily enjoy this marvelous CD. The digital remastering by Martin Haskell reflects hard work, too.

I heartily recommend this for fans of Carmen Miranda; and fans of the carefree musicals from the late 1930s and 1940s will love this CD. People who enjoy Latin American music from that era will also want to pick up this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Collection !!.......2004-10-16

This CD have captured the songs I fondly remembered from Carmen Miranda (aka, the "Samba Queen"). My almost-forgotten and favorite songs from her, "The Man With the Lollipop," "Chica Chica Boom," "Tico-Tico," and more, was nicely restored on this CD coming from a drabby non-stereo, analog-to-digital and to high-digital techniques. Amazing. BUT what's more amazing is that these songs were first recorded from the 1930's, 1940's!! It's a vintage history (document), which we should never ever forget the insatiable Carmen Miranda and her work of art, nonetheless.

This is a must have item for those who also like the song "Mama Eu Quiero" (remember Bugs Bunny was on stage performing and singing it during the 1970s cartoon of Bugs Bunny; he performed the Chiquita Banana woman's song, also known as Carmen Miranda).

To the execs on this CD, thanks for capturing (the fun) history!!

5 out of 5 stars The real Carmen Miranda!.......2003-01-05

I am glad to hear a CD with Carmen Miranda singing with the Bando da Lua, the band that made her famous and that she insisted in bringing to Hollywood, when she was invited to work in this country. Beautiful!

This is her true Brazilian face before her music was [influenced] by fancy Hollywood orchestrations that had very little - better say, nothing - to do with authentic samba and Brazilian rhythms.

Great CD by the best paid (believe or not) Holywood actress of her time. God bless you "pequena notavel"!

5 out of 5 stars Carmen Miranda! Ay! Ay! Ay!.......2002-03-25

OK...there may be alot of songs on here that you don't know from her Hollywood films, but don't let that stop you. She is marvelous and fun! Another reviewer said they were disappointed with this...ignore them and buy it.

4 out of 5 stars Carmen, Carmen, Carmen.......2001-07-19

I realy looked forward to this recording and when it came I p ut the CD on and was somewhat disapointed. The selection of songs seemed to be almost the same from one song to another because of the background music, in most of the musical numbers It was boreing and I was sad over this because I know Carmen Miranda from the Motion Picture Musicals. I felt The old standby songs..#4 Co,Co,Co,Co,Co,Co,Ro,#5 I,Yi,Yi,Yi,Yi,Like You Very Much,#23 Tico-Tico was enjoyable because of being familar with them. The #12 song was fun, I heard this for the first time.I perked up and really enjoyed #24 & #25 because it was a full orchestra backing her up. Just like in the Movies and it made me very happy listening to them. Too bad the whole album wasn't with a full orchestra background. But then hollywood really does it up and when you hear it different it's not as grand. Nevertheless, I would recommend this to others and maybe the more I play this CD, the more I will like it. Numbers #24 & #25 will fill you with the glamor and excitement of this wonderful woman. I wish there was an album of just the hollywood songs on it with Caugat and the other orchestra's giving her that wonderful backup she is intitled to.

This album offers 12 enlightening cover versions of Western pop tunes, as performed by artists from places like France, Spain, South Africa, Germany, and Mali. It's always instructive to glimpse how one culture's music is perceived by another, whether through a funhouse mirror, from under a microscope, or even face-to-face. The performances gathered here range from misguided (Albert Pla's bizarre Spanish language take on Lou Reed's "Take A Walk On The Wild Side") to hilarious (Fatal Mambo's salsa interpretation of Mungo Jerry's "In The Summertime") to a delightful breath of fresh air (Malian girl group Les Go's version of Hall & Oates' "I Can¹t Go For That"). Nenes' earnest Japanese-language rendition of Bob Marley's "No Woman No Cry" is laced with plangent plucked samisens and is somehow extremely touching. Other attempts are less effective, but at least none of them come across as cynical and all are worth a listen. --Christina Roden

5 out of 5 stars Great collection of covers.......2007-06-24

This is a must have for world music lovers, especially those who have American or British favorites they love to hear in new ways. This is one of my favorite world music CD's and probably the one I listen to the most.

5 out of 5 stars Eye-opening! Definitely worth the money.......2007-01-31

This CD is unlike any other. One culture takes on another's idea of a popular hit, and reinterprets it through their own set of cultural lenses. The result is utterly fascinating. It is a fun listen...but also a study of people, of music, of psychology, of music, of intercultural interaction. Don't miss this one!

5 out of 5 stars The Best of Both Worlds.......2006-11-14

I don't know, maybe it's just because I cut my teeth on world music three and a half years ago with this CD and Putumayo's "Global Soul", which came out at about the same time. I love both of them. "Cover the World" takes a very fresh look at some standards that you may already be familiar with.

As mentioned elsewhere, the two songs by Ladysmith Black Mambazo - "People Get Ready", with Phoebe Snow (originally done by The Impressions), and "Ain't No Sunshine" with Des'ree (originally by Bill Withers) - are alone worth the price of the CD. I played "People Get Ready" over and over when I first got the CD, and still haven't tired of it. Angelique Kidjo puts her own unique spin on the Jimi Hendrix standard "Voodoo Child", as do Les Go ("The Girls") on "I Can't Go For That", originally performed by Hall and Oates. Chris Ardoin and his group Double Clutchin' may give you a new appreciation for zydeco with their rendition of "Your Love Keeps Lifting Me Higher" (originally done by Jackie Wilson), and may even motivate you to check out his brother, Sean Ardoin & Zydekool, as well. Finally, Tukuleur, two brothers from Senegal whose music I cannot locate in the United States with the exception of the one song on this CD, make the song "Afrika (Africa)" (originally by Toto, whom I don't remember) their very own. There are no bad songs on the CD, but those are the best of the lot.

"Cover the World" and "Global Soul" almost single-handedly provided me with the bridge I needed to the wonderful, amazing universe of world music, and they may just do the same for you.

1 out of 5 stars Gets old PDQ!.......2006-07-21

I used to work at a store in the mall, that often circulated several putumayo titles on our sound system which we also sold. We had Cuba, Samba Bossa Nova, Asian Groove, Arabic Groove, Zydeco, World Lounge, African Groove, Euro Lounge, Global Soul, just to name a few! I loved them all, even after listening to them every time I worked for almost a year...except one! Cover the world, drove me up the wall the first few times I heard it. Now, there are a few good songs on here ("Ain't no sunshine", is my fav) but overall, not for long term listening in my opinion. Hearing Asian women sing "No woman no cry" gets flat out annoying after awhile! Would recommend the titles I stated above, over this one.

3 out of 5 stars Fun--but not one of Putomayo's most stellar works....mm.......2006-03-02

Most of the Putomayo I own are CDs I can play over and over. "Cover the World" was interesting the first time around, but I doubt I will be revisiting the collection as often as I do "Celtic Tides" or any of the others with more original works.

Standouts are Kidjo's "Voodoo Child," and the 2 selections by Ladysmith Black Mambazo.

3 out of 5 stars Good MOR Bossa Nova Organ Combo, but..........2007-07-13

This is a good middle-of-the-road Bossa Nova organ combo, but it is not Wanderley's best. The earlier records made for the Brazilian market really cook! 'O Samba E Mais Samba' is an excellent example the sort of wide-awake, high-energy Samba Jazz that made Wanderly something very special! Now that that is off my chest, if you like the smoother, almost perky, style of his Verve recordings then this one is fine.

3 out of 5 stars Waning Wanderley.......2006-03-25

It should be said at the outset that WW was a "keyboardist," not just an organist. He actually started out playing piano in Sau Paulo and Rio clubs before he moved to the organ. So it's not really a departure for him to play the ARP, the Fender Rhodes electric piano, piano, and B3 organ on this compilation. That said, it should also be known that WW died from alcoholism not long after he cut these tracks, so that they don't sound like the "vintage" WW might reflect a man on his way out, both musically and literally, rather than his being affected by 80s culture.

It's rather odd that in Brasil, most folks have never heard of Wanderley; they remember the wife he left to come to America, Isaura Garcia, but not the man who was "discovered" by Tony Bennett and handed over to Creed Taylor at Verve (1966). Summer Samba put WW on the map here in the USA, but his successive output never reached that level of popularity, and in the 1960s American music business, if you're not popular, you're not going anywhere economically speaking. I've heard stories of WW playing drunken gigs in San Francisco tranny bars, and they might be true considering the sad anonymity that became his life. This collection should be considered the last musical gasp of a once popular star. It's really not all that bad, despite the more restrained keyboard style noted in another review. You can hear the earlier WW in a few tracks. I have nearly all the output of WW, including the stuff he realeased in Brasil (Sao Paulo used record stores), so I kinda had to buy this one. If you had to buy a compilation, get the Verve one with the bacon and coldcuts on the cover.

5 out of 5 stars The best compilation of Walter Wanderley's music.......2003-01-10

Walter Wanderley is one of the greatest Brazilian Hammond Organists and was a pioneer of Bossa Nova that he preferred to call Jazz Samba. This compilation includes his latest versions recorded in the USA with a wonderful set of musicians and a great Hammond B3 sound

4 out of 5 stars THE BRAZILIAN SOUND.......2001-08-15

These are not the original versions Walter Wanderley recorded but the sound is rich and renovated. Wanderley keeps his own style and more modernized. All melodies included are excellent, very interesting, in a romantic style to be enjoyed with a coup of coffee and a delicious cake and ice cream. If you like brazilian sounds, I recommend this album, there are a lot of these instruments, such as the berimbau, introducing a song with the same title. The synthethizer has susbstituted today many musical instruments, but this instrument in particular may become a whole orchestra conducted by one indiviudual. All brazilian music fans must include this album, in their collections. Don't forget to buy it.

2 out of 5 stars This just isn't Walt..........1999-03-27

If you are a fan of Wanderley's trademark sixties organ-bossa sound, avoid this cd at all costs! Though the liner notes do not indicate the recording date, it is clear from the pictire inside, as well as the nausea-inducing presence of a cheap ARP synthesizer, that this was recorded sometime in the eighties! Not that this would automatically make it awful; it's just awful period. The group DOES hit some nice grooves occasionally, but Walt's unmistakeable organ sound has all but vanished in place of a smoother, more homogonized tone that could just as easily come out of a Casio keboard; in additon, all the percussion sounds exceedingly bright to the point of annoyance. Over all, this collection completely lacks pretty much everything that makes the rest of Walt's work enjoyable. For die-hard completists only.

5 out of 5 stars Be prepared to cede control of your hips.......2006-10-26

How can these songs be so funky and at the same time so filled with saudade? This whole album makes me want to dance and dance, and go back in a time machine to the late 70s in Brazil, shaking it in a thong with beautiful men who whisper sweet promises in my ear in Portuguese. Ben is a master at layering sound, and his voice is so rich and rough at the same time that it pulls at your heartstrings and makes you feel sexy simultaneously.

It'll make you want to learn Portuguese just to sing along.

5 out of 5 stars beautiful timeless brazilian dance music.......2003-07-11

short review: A great cd and well worth the money. Great performances, great production and great sound.

longer review: I dont think this cd was meant to represent Jorge's entire career best, just one beautiful & inspiring part of it. A gem within the crown of his career.

I enjoyed this cd alot. It has very upbeat & joyfully danceable tracks. I am not familiar with Jorge's earlier work, and do not speak portuguese, but this cd sounds very fine to me. Its from the funky 70's, but sounds timelessly fun. This collection complements many of my other brazilian records from other time periods including the 40s, 50s, 60s, 80s, 90s, & 00. All so different, yet all having that underlying brazilian musical style that unifies them all.

One track on this collection gave Rod Stewart the underlying melody/rhythm for his "do you think im sexy" "hit" of the 70's. One might think "big deal" to that influence and say "Rod's song doesnt appeal to me anyway." Fine by me. However, hearing Jorge's original was quite enjoyable & beautiful in its original context. The layers of sound in Jorge's style are very appealing to me. Yet he makes it seem so easy.

Both, Brazilian & US American music, have been influenced by each other, and by many other countries/peoples, over the years. This album further builds on that fact. Noone is an island when it comes to artistic ideas & influences.

A Brazilian cd to appeal to the mind, heart, ear, & feet of the listener(especially me!)...

enjoy

3 out of 5 stars Not the place to start.......2003-06-21

This collection concentrates on late 70's/early 80's Ben. This is not considered to be his best period (60s to late 70s). Not that this collection is bad, but this won't do as a Jorge Ben best-of.

5 out of 5 stars Muy buena "Desculpe o aue".......2005-08-21

No conozco mucho de esta cantante pero escuché ahí por principios de los 90 la canción "Desculpe o aue" y me gustó muchísimo, y ahora sé quién la canta.

5 out of 5 stars The best of Mutantes' ex lead singer.......2003-07-24

This is the collection of the top 10 singles (in the Brazilian chart) of Mutantes' lead singer Rita Lee. Mutantes was one of South America's most created and revered psychedelic rock bands from the late 60's and early 70's. In the 80's, Rita abandoned the experimentation and psychedelism that characterized the Mutantes sound and tried some lighter stuff with influences of bossa nova (check Doce Vampiro, Ovelha Negra, Desculpe O Auê). This CD is the best that the 80's pop rock could offer. There are some pure rock tracks that are awsome too (Agora Só Falta Você, Jardins da Babilônia). The first one was dedicated to her Mutantes partner and ex-boyfriend Arnaldo Baptista and talks about leaving the past behind. Overall, this is a must have for Rita's fans and a very pleasant surprise for a casual listener.

5 out of 5 stars Rita and Roberto Rule!.......2003-06-08

It was on an Internet Radio service to which I (a lover of Brazilian samba/bossa nova) subscribe that I first heard Rita singing "Nem Luxo, Nem Lixo." Though utterly clueless as to the work of this artist, I recall from almost the first note being literally elevated by what I was hearing. It took me back to the R&B harmonies that I so vividly recall from my 1950's youth. On the strength of that hearing, I bought this CD, thinking it would be worth it just for that single cut. With apologies to the late Fred Rogers, "can you spell underestimation?" With her husband and musical partner Roberto de Carvalho, Rita is the consummate pop song writer. Together, they toss off melodic and lyrical (and I don't even understand Portuguese!) hooks that strike me as placing them at least in the neighborhood of a team they obviously and genuinely admire, Lennon & McCartney. In this collection that influence (especially, I think, John Lennon's) is most evident in the first six tracks; but beginning with "Doce Vampiro," every cut is (inho) that of an individual voice, making the sort of music that penetrates the consciousness and simply fills one with the sheer joy of being alive. And in the end, what more is there to any creative art form than that? It's pop music at its absolute most sophisticated, and what amazes me is that it's creators are not more widely known here in the U.S. So, with the proviso that my reaction may well be an individual one, I commend the disc to anyone reading this. If you enjoy it as unabashedly as I have, I will have done my modest bit to make the world (by how many ever inhabitants find it persuasive) a happier place. And isn't that what this living busniess is all about?

5 out of 5 stars RITA IS A FANTASTIC BRAZILIAN SINGER !!!!!.......2001-11-02

The first time I heard anything from Rita Lee was in a party in Mexico City in the early 80's and the song of the year was Lanca Perfume, and it doesn't matter how many times I listen to it, it still sounds as perfect as that first time. I'm so glad to see that this album includes it and honestly, the whole album is great, I love every cut that made her famous as a soloist. If you are into Brazilian Music, do yourself a favor and buy this album, you will love it as well, and if you are not into Brazilian Music, but you like and enjoy good 70's and early 80's Pop/Rock, it'll become a great addition to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars 70's rock still rolls.......2000-02-08

Not quite as technical as newer stuff, but I love her voice and like the arrangements.

5 out of 5 stars takes the tropicalia biscuit..........2005-08-06

and then stuffs it in its mouth and has its biscuit, and eats it too. If you're at all interested in interesting music, this disc will interest you, with interest!
Other tropicalia tomfooolery often leaves me a bit cold, or is too self-consciously wacky for its own good (i like Veloso's second album though). Ze's experimentation, for me, always seems unforced, organic by comparison. Biscuit-wise, whereas some other artists' experimentation is slapped on like chocolate icing on top of a pre-existing biscuit, Ze's more a chocolate-chip-forming-an-intrinsic-part-of-the-biscuit man, melting into and proving indistinguishable from the soft, fleshy dough.

I'm taking biscuits as cookies here you losers, not those grim southern breakfast spods.

Think of this record as bossa nova by a mellowed out frank zappa or something. Really lovely acoustic psychadelia, like Incredible String Band from Brazil. You heard.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, funny. melodic and strange........2004-05-31

The brilliant Tom Ze, who began recording in the 1960s, is here lovingly and thoroughly documented by ex-Talking Head David Byrne, the compiler of the uniformly excellent "Brazil Classics" series.

Ze's music is impossible to categorise. Taking elements of funk, pop, samba, forro, concrete poetry, Dadaism and a whole lot of humour, Ze's songs range from the cryptic and elliptical (Cade Mar) to gorgeous, melancholy ballads (So-- Soledao) about the old Portuguese pain, "saudade," a word loosely meaning "melancholy" or "gentle despair," but, like Ze's music, impossible to accurately render in English. At other times, Ze's music bleats erriely and insistently like nightmare. The album opener, "Nave Maria" (its title an allusion to Columbus' ship and the European discovery of the new world) starts as a gentle samba ryhthm, and exfoliates into modal wailing while the narrator mumbles about babies metaphorical and real being born. At other times, Ze's music is hilarious and seemingly childlike. One song has spoken syllables coming to life and arguing with each other.

Like all great avante-garde music, Ze gets you to hum along while he rearranges his musical heritage and your mind. Ze has described his work as "a mix of Jackson do Pandeira, Beethoven, and the Beatles." He is an acknowledged influence on artists as varied as the Talking Heads, DJ Shadow, and Beck, and his work-- most of what is on this disc is 1960s-1980s-- anticipates hip-hop collage turntablism and the arty underground of '90s bands like Pavement and Sebadoh.

As both an introduction to Ze's enormous ouevre and as a superbly coherent record in its own right, "Brazil Classics IV: The Best of Tom Ze," like the other records in Byrne's series, is outstanding.

5 out of 5 stars massive hits!.......2003-06-01

Tom Ze bends and stretches the rythyms and melodies of pop music in this politically and culturally charged collection of his Brazillian hits from the 1970s. His range is phenomenal and his expressiveness is sublime. One moment you will be entrapped in his layered, sophisticated, rythmic composition of horns, drums, kitchen appliances and type writers, and in the next moment you will grinning ear to ear at his silly, upbeat, frivolis ryhmes. Along the way Tom hits you with his soft, inverted version of the Bossa Nova classic Felicidade and sprinkles in a few lullabies for good measure.

I highly recommend this recording! I have played it regularly for years and continue to enjoy and discover.

        3 out of 5 stars Raul Jose's Review.......2001-05-31

This CD is attractive for the song content and the interesting name of the performer. The guitar playing is fairly good, reflecting both jazz and latin influences. However, it lacks the Brazilian "punch" which I look for in a "knockout".
