Customer Reviews:
the way brouwer meant it to sound.......2003-11-03
Papandreou has a great sonority, an unbelievably balanced and astonishing technique, and most of all a profound interpretation. Brouwer himself once stated in an interview that his music is really easy to interpret, if you just play what he mentions in his partitures. Of course this is a little bit to modest of the great composer, but he obviously wanted to make clear that he wants the preformer to play exactly what's in the score, and this is, contrary to a bunch of other guitarists, certainly what Papandreou does on this cd. You can hear every little musical instruction brouwer put into his scores, plus a profound understanding of all the secrets of the pure magic this music holds.
Add to this the low price of this record, and you get a 5*-buy.

Classical Guitar
Adam Khan (b 1974) began to play the Guitar at the age of 12. After his first recital 3 years later he was hailed by the press as "one of Britain's most promising young musicians".
His main teacher over the years has been the English Guitarist Raymond Burley. He has also studied with the composer John W. Duarte in London. Adam has spent a great deal of time abroad where he has had the chance to study with the great Cuban composer Leo Brouwer in Spain, Germany and Portugal. He has also played in Master-classes with some of the world's top Guitarists such as Roberto Aussel, Costas Cotsiolis and Eduardo Isaac.
In 1995 he was a prize winner at the Savona International Guitar competition in Italy and was a finalist in the Simoni Salmasso competition also in Italy. In 1997 he selected to play in the final stage of the Stotsenberg competition in Maliba, Los Angeles, and in 1999 he received 2nd price in the "Citta di Corntemilia" competition in Turin and the Bucherest international guitar festival in Romania.
Adam has given many recitals throughout great Britain and abroad including music festivals such as Swansea, Devon, Buckingham, Yatton, Chester, Llanfyllin, Kent and the West Dean International Guitar Festival in Chichester.
In 1998 he toured extensively through India to great critical acclaim giving solo recitals as well as masterclasses. This was followed in 1999 with a trip to Pakistan where he gave solo recitals as well as duo performances. He also played in the middle east in conjunction with the British Arts Council.
Adam has collaborated on many diverse musical projects including work with Nafees Ahmet (sitar), Sara Egan (mezzo), The Allegri String Quartet, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Chrome and various performing poets and actors.
Television appearances have been frequent as well as several live broadcasts for BBC radio.

Customer Reviews:
The definitive Baden Powell record.......2005-11-29
Very inspiring, educational and refreshing in these days of perfect-sounding records tweaked to excess in a digital audio workstation. Two such examples are the opening and closing tracks "Tristeza" and "O Astronauta". In these two tracks, Baden is a tightrope walker, plunging along the high wire of improvisation. At points, it sounds like he's faltering, about to fall down, only to recover with a fluorish in the next bar. The man simply knew the fingerboard.
Not coincidentally, both tracks mentioned above have the same structure of a "trio: guitar bass and drums" (Another high of this release is the quaint short technical descriptions of each track, most likely Berendt's work).
The next set of tracks that stand out in my opinion are the two in the form of "duo: guitar and bass", These are "Round Midnight" and "Manha de Carnaval". I have come to regard these two as the "definitive version" of each of these tunes (perhaps with the exception of Monk's solo piano version of "Midnight").
Four of the tracks are a result of his then current fascination with the Afro-brazilian music and rituals of Bahia. The sounds of "Saravah", "Canto de Ossanha", "Canto de Xango" and "Som do Carnaval" blend the atabaque (Afro-brazilian ritual conga-like hand drum) with more traditional Rio samba instruments to great effect. "Som do Carnaval" has Baden playing agogo bells, but no guitar.
If there is any track that has not stood the test of time is "Invencao em 7 1/2", which sounds like a long-lost two-part invention, but is done with (since dated) tape vari-speed trickery. At least they're upfront about it in the liner notes.
Rounding up the offer, there is an incredible guitar solo version of "Das Rosas" a great song by Dorival Caymmi. Baden delivers another "definitive version" in my book.
This album belongs in many "best-of" lists and will remain relevant for years to come.
A magical record.......2001-07-26
One of the all-time classics in any genre.......2000-10-10
Recorded in the late 60s, it anchors a period in his life that produced his best work in my opinion, and is for me the *definitive* Baden Powell and one of the pieces of music that I would put in a top ten all-time collection to be included in a space-time capsule of music from planet earth.
This title was out-of-print for several years, and I am happy to see it available again for people who have not had the benefit of experiencing its sublime beauty and energy.
Tristeza on Guitar - Available again.......2000-07-06
By the way, Tristeza IS written with a Z, and his name is NOT Roberto Baden-Powell like it's been published lately: He is Baden-Powell de Aquino, born and raised in the Rio suburb of Varre-e-Sai.
