Alfred Deller presents a masterly classic of the Songs from Shakespeare.
Recorded in 1970, this work cannot be surpassed. Well worth adding to any collection.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Excellent argument for watching Shakespeare's plays.......2005-11-29

'Shakespeare's Musick' by Musicians of the Globe, lead by Philip Pickett is, like a similar recording, 'Songs and Dances from Shakespeare' by The Broadside Band' is a very nice recreation of what you would have heard at the Globe Theatre in London during or after the performances of Will Shakespeare's plays. I will also say that I believe it is just a bit better than the alternative recording if only for it's fewer 'Hey Nonnie Nonnies'. But, both recordings are not the best you can find of Renaissance music. Compared to excellent recordings of Renaissance dances and liturgical music, these seem to suffer from being out of context.

These are well worth the listen, but they will probably not set your toes to tapping as you might to performances by, for example, the Renaissance specialist band Piffaro.

5 out of 5 stars Elizabethan Surprise!.......2000-02-12

If someone had asked me before I listened to the music provided on this CD if I liked English music of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, I would have wrinkled my nose and said a resounding "Yuck!" I came across "Shakespeare's Musick" quite by accident at the local library. I was working on a project dealing with William Shakespeare and decided to take this CD home to see if it would fit into my theme. From the very first song to the very last, Philip Pickett and the Musicians of the Globe had me captivated. The sound is pure and lively and takes the listener on a ride that transcends time. It certainly made this listener a convert! I am now purchasing "Shakespeare's Musick" to add to my own collection and would highly recommend its addition to anyone elses. It will open your ears to a whole other world of sound -- sound that not only tickles the fancy, but enchants the soul.

Album Description

OK horn fans, here it is…one the world's esteemed chamber groups teams up with one of the world's most storied horn sections for a CD that is-literally and figuratively-a blast! This recording is by any measure a virtuoso performance; these nine guys, all gifted in their own right, combine their talents to create an end result that is nothing short of breathtaking. From commissioned works to clever arrangements, the American Horn Quartet and the Horns of the New York Philharmonic tear through this music with a verve and flair rarely heard these days. In short, if you're a fan of the horn, you must have this recording!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic Horn Album.......2006-03-27

The hornists are simply fantastic. Many segments of the music thrill me, nearly take my breath away. Although many pieces represent their diverse skills I would love to have a presentation of more of the fanfare type pieces, the type which show the glory and power of the horn. Love the Ewazen piece. Love the Irish pieces. Thought the recording was a little muffled. Had to turn my stereo up too loud to get the full effect. Over all one great horn album.

5 out of 5 stars Farewell to Red Castle.......2004-01-11

Take 9 is the best CD I own. My favorite song is the second on the track. Farewell to Red Castle. It's the most incredible peice, especially with 9 horns playing it. It is fun and exciting along with slow and beautiful. it's a great representation of the entire collection of Take 9's songs. wOOt!

5 out of 5 stars An Awesome Recording.......2003-09-09

This is an awesome recording combining 9 great players. The music is beautiful, but still showy, an excellent combination for this group of horns. Overture to Candide is incredible, and the Grand Canyon Suites is one of the greatest horn recording I have ever heard. This recording belongs in any horn players library.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great gems from musicals that dissapeared.......2004-11-30

Songs from 1987's "Smile" make this well worth the price. The previously unreleased material from the late, great Howard Ashman deserves to have it's moment in the spotlight.

Also, there's Judy Kuhn's beautiful performance on "Starfish", Christine Baranski's vampy turn on "Sherry".

Finally, there's" New Words" from "One, Two, Three, Four, Five". This show has been restaged, by small theatre groups, under the title "History Loves Company". "New Words" is by far the best number of this show and Liz Callaway's voice fills with love as she sings this lullaby.

For a consummate musical theatre fan who's heard it all, this disc is a refreshing look at what has been lost over the years.

3 out of 5 stars some gold mixed with dross.......2003-12-21

Some of these songs desrve to be unsung. But then you get a showstopper like Sherry and you wonder how could this show have flopped? That number alone makes this cd worth purchasing.I also enjoyed Marvin Hamlisch's toe tapping title song - Smile. There are also a few other lovely melodies which makes this cd a nice addition to a Broadway collection.

4 out of 5 stars High Energy RAWK & Roll!!!.......2007-05-05

I had never heard of these guys until I saw them open for Buckcherry and Black Stone Cherry last July. These guys are one of the most energetic rock bands I've seen play live, and I've been going to rock concerts since '79 when I was only 12 and Judas Priest & UFO were my introduction to a live rock 'n roll show.
These guys don't just "play" rock and roll, they live, breathe, eat, and spit it right back at their fans (kind of like sharing it). They are loud, they are sleazy, they have the attitude and strut, but most of all THEY CAN BACK IT UP MUSICALLY!!! These guys make rock fun again. Want to know what they sound like??? Take the Strokes' cool, the Ramone's & the Stooges punk attitude, Buckcherry and Guns 'n Roses LA sleeze, whip it up in a blender, and crank it up to 11!!! Karmakazi is probably my fave, followed by Damaged Goods and Spread Eagle. I bet since I bought the CD last July I listen to it at least once every 3-4 days.

5 out of 5 stars Rock Me Gently - Hell No!.......2006-12-21

The Bangkok Five's, "Who's Gonna Take Us Alive" is one of the most incredile albums of this year, or any year.

Frost's amazing vocals bathe the aching body in a molten hot rush of resonance that when mixed with the smoking guitar styling of Holcolm KS and Sweeney and the ultra sick, pulsating rhythms from Coatez and Blanco; what's a girl to do but fall head over stilettoed heels for The Bangkok Five.

They've managed to capture the intense energy that they bring to the live stage on this album in a way that most veteran bands only wish for. Seeing Bangkok live is like being thrown around like a rag doll for 45 minutes, loving every minute of it, as they leave you saying, "please, may I have another", as you watch the bruises on your body bloom into the purple tinged tattoos that you'll savor in the days to come.

"Who's Gonna Take Us Alive" is a must-have for anyone who's love of rock and soul needs to feel actualized this life.

Definately buy it with "10 The Hard Way", so you don't miss out on "I'm Not Here" - an awesome track that no self-respecting Bangkok fan could or should do without.

Do The Bangkok Five rock you gently? Hell no! And you will thank them every single day for it, baby doll.

5 out of 5 stars These guys are the best!.......2006-11-08

Buy this CD and see them perform live, they rock!

5 out of 5 stars Saw Them, No Hype-They Are Excellent-Buy The Album.......2006-11-04

I knew nothing about Bangkok Five until a few nights ago. I saw them open up for The Cult this week in New Orleans (after the show there was a shooting-death just outside the House of Blues-Isn't New Orleans predictable?) They were excellent-California produces talent like no other. Great music, huge stage presence, fun to watch..."Go ahead and clap, we like it." they said to an audience that eventually warmed to them. This is a band that I see as a legitimate follow-up to the Red Hot Chili Peppers-not because of the similarity to each other's music-but, for sheer LA attitude on stage. They love to perform. We loved to watch them. See if you can check them out with The Cult (on tour now) and see what you think.

      5 out of 5 stars Heh heh..........2006-10-24

I would f**k every last one of them.

TB5 is an amazing band. Go see them live for a real treat.

4 out of 5 stars I really enjoyed this cd.......2004-03-19

Being a bass player myself I really enjoyed this cd becuase of the variety of music featured on it! I hope other people can enjoy it and appriciate it as well!

4 out of 5 stars For Doublebass players.......2000-04-30

Nice arrangements, wonderful sound, a wide variety of songs but I wanted to listen more to Gary Karr. The interpretation of Moses Fantasy is better that the one played with the RSO Berlin Orchestra. If you are a DoubleBass player, this is a must. If you aren't, you'll hear what a doublebass can do and how sensitive it could be. I couldn't stop laughing when I heard for the first time the "sarcastic" version of Wannabe. This album is like a Raritie. If your're really looking for a serius album to know better the doublebass, this is not the first one that I'll chose. But it's really fun!

3 out of 5 stars London Double Bass Sound.......2000-04-27

This CD is certainly an interesting concept, however musically speaking it doesn't quite hit the mark that it intended. Fans of Gary Karr should certainly consider buying this CD because his performances are inspiring and the ensemble does a nice job of accompanying, however the selection of repetoire does not always help the bassists' fight for serious recognition. "The Elephant" sounds grotesque enough with only one bass playing it, but here there are four basses on the solo line. The jazz tunes are nice, but lack a certain excitement and the inclusion of the Spice Girls' "Wannabe", as humorous as it may have intended to be, may set the double bass back a few steps in the eyes of the general, non bass playing public.

        5 out of 5 stars Just dandy!.......2003-10-04

My copy of this set sounds fine--a bit bright and edgy at times but nothing to write my congressperson about. I would've preferred a richer piano sound and modern digital recording, but hey, we can't have everything, especially in this sort of repertoire. These are swell performances of astonishing piano music. In unsympathetic hands, Ives (or nearly any "modern" composer) can sound like so much noodling--not so here. Ives himself enjoyed adventurous (and even incompetent!) interpretations of his music and was hardly fussy with his notation so it's tough to call any one recording of a work "definitive." A tip: look for hell-bent enthusiasm and/or profound mysticism more than any other qualities in Ives performances. You'll find them in this set, in old (and sonically imperfect) recordings like Bernstein's for CBS (now Sony) or the Stokowski performance of Symphony #4, and in the wonderful collection of Ives playing his own music. With Ives, the "critical edition" mentality or perfectionism of any type tend to miss the man's essential aesthetic and spiritual points.

        5 out of 5 stars More than a bargain.......2001-07-22

I listened to this set before I looked at the review already posted here; then I went back to listen again, thinking I must have missed something. For what it's worth, I did not detect distorted recording, though there are (as often with Ives) some odd sounds coming from the piano now and then--but I think they are part of it. Mandel's performances of the big works--the two sonatas--are distinctive and powerful. I am not sure I would say he replaces John Kirkpatrick's "Concord," but he stands comfortably in that company as a fine interpreter of the work, and his Sonata #1 is possibly the best I have heard of that work. The many shorter or minor pieces are performed well, so far as I can tell. I suppose it is possible that the earlier reviewer had a defective set, or possibly my ears are just not so finely tuned. I hope, however, that the recorded sound is at least as good as it sounds to me, since I would hope that both fans and newcomers would find this a welcome addition to an Ives collection.

        1 out of 5 stars 5 Star Performance, 0 Star Recording.......1999-10-12

This is an excellent performance by Alan Mandel who, throughout these 3 discs, shows an uncanny ability to bring out the melody from within even the most convoluted Ives' piece. Unfortunately, most of this recording is distorted and noisy when the playing gets loud. All of the Studies on CD 1 contain distortion well beyond any professional recording I've ever heard (the 2 sonatas don't suffer from the same fate -- they appear to be from a different session). The fact that Vox goes on about their 20-bit digital mastering on the back of the box sure looks like they are "protesting too much". This is all a real shame for Ives fans because Mandel's playing is some of the finest Ives piano performances I've ever heard, plus, here in one place at a great price, are arcane pieces well worth hearing. (It's almost worth getting for that reason, but, in the end, you're stuck with fine music that's distorted and noisy.)
