Do not buy this album if you like only flamenco guitar (that is, no singing). Enrique Morente is a flamenco singer and the greatest flamenco artist there is.

This album is a concept album where all the songs pertain to some cultural/historical part of the Alhambra in Granada. The album came about due to a documentary commissioned on the Alhambra which Morente worked on and became much bigger as it opened up ideas to the always experimental Morente. What resulted apart from the doco was this brilliant CD.

Not as good as his previous album El Pequeno Reloj (that may have been his masterpiece) from 2003 but also not far off it and easily still the best flamenco album of the year, it is a totally different type of flamenco album.

Again, this is not flamenco for tourists or fly-by-night flamenco listeners. If you like Gypsy Kings and think that's flamenco you will get an awakening. This is music for people who have souls and appreciate music which enters that soul.

The marimba is a vivid legacy of African presence in Latin America, but only on the Pacific coast of southern Colombia and northern Ecuador does it keep its close connections to a strongly African culture. Hailing from small towns along the river-ridden Colombian coast, the seasoned women singers of Grupo Naidy raise their voices to the accompaniment of marimba and drums, performing their unique styles of music known collectively as currulao. 36-page booklet, bi-lingual notes, photos, 54 minutes.

MIGUEL FLETA IS THE MOST INTERESTING TENOR I HAVE EVER HEARD. I ENJOY HIS ART FROM TIME TO TIME.

THE FIRST FIVE SELECTIONS ON THIS DISC CAPTURE HIS 18TH-19TH CENTURY VOCAL TECHNIQUE (later named bel canto)AT ITS BEST AND IT ENABLES HIM TO VARY NOT ONLY HIS DYNAMIC RANGE IN EXTREMES BUT ALSO HIS TONAL COLOR. HE HAS ASTOUNDING AGILITY. HE HAS A VERY LARGE VOICE STRONG ON THE TOP AND THE BOTTOM. HOWEVER, WHEN HE SINGS VERISMO AND FORTE, HE LOSES SOLIDITY AND INTONATION.

IT SEEMS THAT HE DID NOT PERFECT THE BEL CANTO TECHNIQUE WITH REGARD TO BREATHING AND HIS FABLED PIANI AND DIMINUENDI OFTEN SWITCH REGISTERS AUDIBLY AND WOBBLE THEIR WAY HOME. YET HE SINGS WITH GREAT HEART AND AFFECTINGLY.
