There's no mystery to the appeal of Armik's sun-warmed, note- dense excursions on guitar. An Iranian native of Armenian descent now living in Southern California, Armik sets his new flamenco works aglow with a blend of passion and craftsmanship that exudes an authentic, old-world character plus a beguiling, gypsy-like charm. It is an inviting combination that reliably draws in mainstream fans of contemporary instrumental music who are attracted to new flamenco's more exotic colorings. Armik's principal distinguishing quality is the sometimes-startling quickness of his fingers, which are capable of producing great swarms of notes that almost render listeners dizzy. On this, the former jazz guitarist's sixth recording, Armik elects to use a different guitar on each of the disc's 12 tracks, though it's a nuance that ultimately matters little and will be lost on most listeners. The attraction remains the earnest, old-school inclinations of Armik's compositions and their almost unfailingly upbeat disposition. Traditional flamenco listeners will likely continue to shrug off Armik's playing, but casual listeners will just as likely remain impressed by his dexterous, energetic displays. Expect another string of five-star listener reviews for this consistently appealing performer. --Terry Wood

4 out of 5 stars Recycling Melodies.......2002-07-27

As much as I love Armik and his magnificent guitar techniques, but unfortunately, he has been recycling his melodies lately. Many of the pieces on this CD are either the exact copies of his previous works or have been modified slightly. That is a shame for such a super artist. He needs to take a break from producing a new CD every year, and create new masterpieces.
A big Armik fan,
Farhad

3 out of 5 stars Rosas del Amour.......2001-10-10

Sounds very much like other albums. Same type of music just variations on melody. Pleasant to listen too but nothing new.

5 out of 5 stars Soothing melodies.......2001-09-14

The cd cover caught my eye as I roamed through the cd section. I have been exploring other music interests besides Jazz and Latin. The first track "Lovers in Madrid" took me on a journey to a candlelit cafe along the banks of a river, under a midnight blue sky with stars twinkling above. I could image myself there listening and watching Armik play. I listened to the wole cd before leaving the bookstore. But vowed to come back to purchase this cd. Which I am happy, I did, it was the last copy on the shelf. I recommend anyone who is a lover of guitar, romance and serenity to pick this up.

5 out of 5 stars Armik the Great at it again !.......2001-09-07

Wonderful, beautiful mix of hot + spicy, warm + sensuous guitarra music for the ears. After a long tiring day at work, the most down-to-earth way to revitalise the battered body and soul. Armik's skillful and immaculate guitar licks is among the best there is in this crowded world of flamenco-jazz-latin-middle eastern brew.

I did not buy Armik's music in chronological order of releases - this CD is among the initial two CDs i bought (the other being "Gypsy Soul", another brilliant composition). To-date, I've collected the ENTIRE six CDs from Armik the Great. Armik's music is special, so is "Rosas Del Amor". All six albums have their own unique character and theme. This album is highly recommended. If you are new to Armik, I urge you to sample it now. You will come to the same conclusion as I have - simply irresistible. Well done! Armik.

Can we expect more the your 'ear-food' in 2002, Dear Armik ?

5 out of 5 stars Acoustic Nirvana!.......2001-08-06

I did not think any human was capable of moving their fingers so insanely fast with such beauty! Armik moves effortlessy up and down the frets with an elegant flamenco artistry that has to be heard to be believed. I am in awe and you will be too

5 out of 5 stars Fluid, Graceful, Timeless.......2004-10-06

If you like Tomatito, no; take that back. Even if you even like Flamenco a little bit, you will like this album. He is the great master of the guitar and more versatile than ever here. He is the "little tomato" as his family called him. Seems like a large tomato to me after listening to this for about 6 months now. It made me get everything else he's ever done that I could get Stateside. It's incredible!
Brent Fuller.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful!.......2000-10-11

This is a wonderful recording, a nice collection of different flamenco types: bulerias, sevillanas, rumba, etc. Tomatito is such a brilliant guitarist, and there is a great guest appearance by Camaron.

Here are five and a half hours of little-known music dating from the mid-12th century to the start of the 16th. Some of it comes from France (Provence, in particular), some from Spain (songs of praise to the Virgin Mary--many in amazing dance rhythms), some from Italy (songs of love and war of the troubadours). There are instrumentals with great vigor, complicated vocal works, chant, the expected music of praise, and a few unexpectedly ribald--almost lewd--songs. Taken a CD at a time, this is a magnificent journey, but be warned: being stuck in the Middle Ages for too long might make you yearn for those simple, high-minded times. --Robert Levine

3 out of 5 stars but what are they saying?.......2006-06-06

This is, musically, a wonderful set. But beware: there are no song text translations; a fatal oversight for six CDs of almost exclusively vocal music by composers to whom text was as important as melody, and in languages that don't exist anymore. In that regard, it was very disappointing.

5 out of 5 stars A heapin' helpin' of early music.......2005-10-14

Wonderful from start to finish, this set is quite a sampler, with enjoyable selections performed and recorded well. I suspect some accomodation is being made to the comtemporary listener here and some of the performances may not be 100% "historically accurate." But so what? I've been listening to this at home and while out and about on my iPod. There's quite a variety here which causes the set to avoid the "sameness" of many other sets of this type I've purchased. And the price is defnitely right, particularly for a used copy. What've you got to lose? Give it a shot!

4 out of 5 stars Exclent cd for mediaeval music........1999-11-09

If your just getting into music from this time period this is the cd for you. It gives samples of music that dates from the 1100s to the 1400s.
