If you are a fan of Mireille Matthieu then this is an essential cornerstone CD collection of 60 songs that showcases the incredible talent and voice of this incredible French singing star. I have to confess that I do not understand French but, in a way, that is an advantage because it allows me to concentrate and listen to the tones and expressions of her voice - which are absolutely superb and out of this world. Even if you are not a Mireille Matthieu fan but you like to listen to fine singers, I strongly recommend that you buy this CD collection and listen for yourself - you will be pleased that you did.

If you intend to listen to this CD set on your computer or portable device, be aware that this set contains one of those insidious copy protection schemes that prevent normal listening unless you install special software, and also only allows you to save the tracks in special MS proprietary formats. No, thanks.

While Amazon does mention it, this information is buried under the header "Format: Enhanced". I would never have come up with an idea of calling it an "enhancement". I think Amazon should change their terminology to prevent such misunderstandings.

I am returning the set.

There is nobody alive better suited to carrying on the tradition of French torch singers than Mireille Mathieu. To hear her cover Piaf's best-known songs is to be transported to the streets of Paris.

I love Mireille Mathieu, and I really like this collection. Although it includes a few songs that are not my personal favourites,I still cannot fault the disc, due to the other songs which more than make up for it. The love songs included in the selection are absolutely stunning. The beauty of the melody, the depth of the lyrics, Mireille Mathieu's splendid voice and her beautiful French make for a lovely combination.

A few words about two of my personal favourites: "Mon Dieu" is a touching and passionate plea to God to let her hold on to her beloved a while longer.

"L'hymne a l'amour" is a wonderful and powerful declaration of love, in which the woman asserts that whatever happens, she doesn't care as long as her beloved loves her back.


Most of the other songs are very well known classics which I'm sure need no introduction (please note that I'm not very knowledgeable about Edith Piaf, so I apologize in advance to fans who know more about her songs than myself).

All I can say is that I love this disc, that I've played it loads of times and still keep playing it, and that you're really missing out by not acquiring it. The songs are touchingly and passsionately performed, Mireille's voice is great, and you cannot fail to be emotionally affected, especially if you understand French. If not,I believe Mireille Mathieu can really make you wish to learn the language.

J'ai redécouvert Mireille Mathieu par l'intermédiaire de ce cd. Personne d'autre que Mireille Mathieu ne pouvait rendre un hommage aussi émouvant à Piaf.... La puissance, la richesse et la chaleur de sa voix remettent en valeur ces grands classiques de la chanson française. D'ailleurs, Mireille qu'on a souvent qualifié de copie de Piaf n'a pourtant rien à envier la môme... Je pense que je vais me lasser charmer par d'autres Album de Mireille... Je la connaissais mais je la méconnaissais. Bravo Mireille!

Fantastic voice, superb singing; you don't have to know Edith Piaf to love Mireille Mathieu, you just have to hear Mireille Mathieu sing on this album, and you will know why Mireille Mathieu is so adored over and over again!

Mathieu is Mathieu and Piaf is Piaf, and never the twain . ........2004-02-15

I absolutely adore the work of Mireille Mathieu, I own several of her albums. But the least played in our house is this one; least played by far. The French decided decades ago that Mireille was Edith reincarnate and that has apparently haunted her career. I've read that after nearly thirty years she relented and did this Piaf album, and she proved she was right all along - this music belongs to only Edith.

Three stars here because Mathieu puts her own mark on several songs and they stand well, especially "Mon manege a moi" - and she does well with "La vie en rose". But on too many songs she seems almost self-conscious, her usual enthusiasm vanishes. She sings the words but her heart doesn't seem to be in it; Especially on "Mon Dieu" and on one of Piaf's signature songs, "Non, je ne regrette rien".

If you are lucky enough to own her "Embrujo" album try listening to the wonderful "L'hymne a l'amour" on this album and then on "Embrujo", which is in Spanish. Her effort in Spanish is so much more free, effortless, and beautiful - it's her, not Piaf, and it works.

Finally, the choice of a few of the songs leaves me bewildered. If I were trimming the work of Edith Piaf to thirteen songs I don't think I'd include "Exodus", it's not really Edith's song. And why on earth did they include the silly novelty motorcycle song, "The Terror of Highway 101" translated to French? It's like honoring Sinatra with "Old MacDonald". My Goodness.

Anyhow, Mireille will remain my favorite singer alive today. And Edith will remain my favorite in the history of mankind. And never the twain shall meet.

There is no doubt that Mireille Mathieu is one of the most versatile French performers ever. She's been seen as another Piaf for years, and that has affected her career sometimes positively and mostly negatively.
In this album, Mathieu sings some of the most famous Piaf songs. Let's not forget that this is Mireille singing . . . not Edith Piaf & the results are breathtaking. Yes, she does a [Heck] Of A Job!!!! Her own interpretations are spellbinding & Heavyweight.
A few people performed Piaf's songs with such elegant and power.

Mireille Mathieu is marvelous in this CD. Her voice is unique. I'm a fan of Mireille Mathieu since I was 3 years old - I discovered her in a Brazilian LP, now on CD (which all Mathieu fans must have!) - and her technique is becoming better and better each year. I was particularly touched by her "Jezebel", which is fantastic!

I'm sorry to say it but this album is just too much. For sure I don't have anything against Mme. Mathieu but to listen to this album makes me icredibley sad and for sure many other admireres of Piaf as well. Just to say that Mathieu did for sure her utmost to make this a "good" album. Many, especially outside of France think she sucseeded, me for sure I don't think so. For Mathieu Fans only - otherwise buy the original!

NOT a CD.......2005-02-14

Technically, this is not a CD. Philips has set standards for what a CD is, and since this contains copy protection, it does not conform to those standards. The product does have a warning and does not bear the CD logo which is as it should be since it doesn't conform. However, the amazon listing is not clear on this point.

I give it 2 stars instead of 1, since the music is good. However, especially if you listen to CD's on Linux, you may have your work cut out for you in defeating the copy protection in order to listen to the songs. And Americans so doing could be in violation of the DMCA, not sure, IANAL.

I have not yet found a compilation of Mireille's that was not worthy of adding to my collection. Her voice is strong and as beautifull as ever and this is a nice collection of songs you may have on LP's or 45 rpm records. To have them on CD is wonderfull. If you are a Mireille fan, or just like great vocals from a French legend, I suggest you go out and get it. If you have not yet experienced Mireille's remarkable voice, you are in for a treat....

Here comes another album from French songstress Mireille Mathieu, this time around the material chosen for this CD is more optimistic than in her previous one. Mireille sounds fresh with this new collection of modern pop songs, three songs are penned by Bobby Goldsboro who was responsible for the hit "Tous les enfants chantent avec moi" years ago, Francis Lai's collaboration on 'Un peu d'espérance' is timeless. The album is rich and full with emotions & will surely satisfy fans all over the world.

This new CD certainly will not disappoint you. My music collection of the incomparable Mireille Mathieu began many years ago. (I have more that 50 vinyl albums!) On this CD she continues her magic with each and every song. Beautiful interpretation of the lyrics combined with great orchestration makes this a must for the Mireille fan. Ennio Morricone is well-known as a composer of scores for movies and TV; he did the music for several of Clint Eastwood's "spaghetti westerns". Mireile Mathieu is a worthy successor to Edith Piaf. My congratulations to the genius who thought to bring these two talents together.

versatile voice range I have ever heard. I have been
a fan of her singing since 1968 when I first arrived
in France for 2 years. She is the only French

Mireille Mathieu has really outdone herself on this CD. Her beautiful voice is richly challenged in this assort- ment of unusually haunting melodies by Ennio Morricone. I especially liked the instrumentals in Da quel Sorriso che non ride piu. This CD is excellent because it highlights Mireilles tremendous voice range and passion!

A more mature Mireille shows in the 11 songs on this CD. Like a fine wine, Mireille's sounds even smoother and I have to agree with other reviewers that this CD is a must buy - you will not regret it, and you will be enthralled by her expressive voice. I have listened to these songs over and over and over and I never get tired of listening to her singing. A genuine top world class songstress.

"De Tes Mains" appears to be a radical departure for Mireille Mathieu from her well-known style of earlier albums. To me, this is a wonderfully new Mireille, and the passion and power she has always brought to every song in her long carreer is even more evident here. I have listened to this CD through a set of studio quality headphones, enjoying the full effect of the closeness of her voice, and the fabulous sounds of the orchestra. And every time, again and again, I get carried away into another space of being. This is the magic of Mirelle Mathieu!

Il m'a fallu quelques écoutes pour découvrir toute la richesse qu'il recelait! On est loin ici, des chansonnettes auxquelles nous habituait parfois Mireille Mathieu. De beaux textes et une voix qui les sert très bien,sans en mettre plus qu'iln'en faut. Prenez le temps de vous laisser charmer et c'est un album que vous réécouterez avec toujours autant de plaisir.

I have been following Mireille's career since as a very young girl, she appeared on Ed Sullivan's and Merv Griffin's shows. I was entranced by her voice, then youthful, and what I would now describe as slightly explosive. Over the years I forced myself to learn the French language so that her albums, which were at the time very hard to find on the Southern United States, would mean more to me. I have virtually her entire discography, and the growth in her presentation over the past 30 years has been remarkable. Having gone so many years since her most recent studio album (1995), I was naturally elated when I discovered that a new album was on the way .... "De Tes Mains" is a wonderful collaboration of memorable songs and singer. They may or may not be the best material Mireille has ever recorded but they are certainly strong lyrics for her voice, which now displays a total maturity which I am certain Mireille's girlhood idol, Edith Piaf, would find very pleasing. I can only hope we will continue to receive Mme. Mathieu's efforts for many years to come. Her voice is obviously ready for her own "La Vie En Rose".
