Felix Lajko is a superb Serbian violin player who often performs in Budapest. His skills with his instruments (he also plays the zither) are far beyond his years. On this album in particular, Lajko manages to fuse traditional folk rythms and melodies of the area with a modern/classical/jazz feel, creating a sound and style that is absolutely unique and occasionally sounds like it's bordering on the insane. Lajko is to classical violin what Tom Waits is to pop singing. This album is infused with energy, catchy hooks, fascinating rythms, and the completely capitivating and dynamic playing of Lajko, all taking you on a wild ride through the Hungarian countryside. "Insane genious" is an overused term, but just might be the only way to describe Lajko's talent. If you're looking for something completely different, whether your a classical music listener or a fan of grunge metal, this just might be the ticket. Give it a chance.

5 out of 5 stars Eastern European Madness.......2000-10-11

An incredible album of violin, bass, and zither, with the occasional vocal number. The music lurches and sways, pulling in the listener with a sound both familiar and alien. The violin playing is fiery, the songs are long but not boring, and the mood is dark. Recommended highly for fans of Tom Waits, Andrew Bird, and the more adventurous Django Reindhardt/Stephan Grappelli admirers.

    5 out of 5 stars Music for a Bacchanalia.......2006-03-13

I got my first Lajko album a few years ago and immediately ordered this live album from an English webcite as it seems no copies are available in the US. It is mind blowing and I don't say that lightly. It is at turns driving and deeply carnal with a kind of animal ferocity that makes one think of bloody rites in the forests of our ancestors. The music can then become exceedingly tender, like the thinnest veil being lifted with extreme gentleness from some incredibly beatific and longed for treasure. It is really like a soundscape for our internal mythosphere.
Being live, the album also lends itself furthur to the imagination. You can hear Felix occationally grunt or giggle while he is playing, in full trance I am sure. While researching him I found an article about a concert he performed at in Prague. At some point the electicity went out and he didn's stop playing for a second. Just to imagine this music being played in a dark music hall with nothing but the red of the exit lights to illuminate the scene sounds incredible to me. I am shocked that the whole audience didnt rip off thier clothes and spin around him in circles, it's that good.

5 out of 5 stars Lajko Shines in Concert.......2003-09-17

This CD documents a 1998 performance of Felix Lajko and his band at the Hungarian Academy of Music in Budapest, where he often performs. Lajko is a superbly talented violinist (and sometimes zither player) who blends Eastern folk melodies and rythms with a somewhat dark, modern, manic style. His music is filled with catchy hooks and beats, often appearing to border on the out-of-control, but never going over the edge. There's a certain insane and chaotic style to the music that is captivating.

This performance is typical Lajko in the late 1990s. The production is not the best, as the sound is slightly muddy. However, this is a minor complaint, and it's the performance that counts. Lajko flies through 6 compositions, each displaying his amazing ability to make the violin scream and sing. The band provides an excellent backdrop to Lajko's frenetic playing, always adding depth but never overwhelming the main attraction. The two play off of each other well, each emphasizing the other's strengths. The opening takes a little bit to get going, and there's a definite adjustment time for the listener not familiar with this style of music, but give it some time and let yourself immerse in the music. Track two is a slower, darker, more moody piece. The 8 minute solo is perhaps a bit long, but allows Lajko the opportunity to demonstrate his talents in the spotlight. The Finale is a highlight, demonstrating Lajko at his soaring best.

For first-time Lajko listeners, I would strongly reccomend the CD Lajko Felix & His Band (aka Lajko Felix es Zenekara - the one in the cardboard cover with a hand-written title showing through a window on the front) as a better choice. It has somewhat better production values, and offers up a slightly more interesting set, IMHO. The tunes are a little more catchy and accessible. This concert disc is a bit more challenging, and not as accessible, at first listen. However, this is an excellent second choice, and a wonderful document of a master artist displaying his abilities. If you like Felix Lajko & His Band (again, the one in the cardboard sleeve with the window showing his hand-written name - it is sometimes difficult to tell his CDs apart), this is an excellent follow-up.

I wish artists like this would get more recognition in the West. If anyone from his edge of the world can make it big, however, Lajko is the one who can. Beat the rush!

    5 out of 5 stars Stunning.........2001-04-27

I only have one song ( play 1 ) from this album from a Songlines CD and it blew me away. Felix have been compared to Nigel Kennedy, I wouldn't know much about that since I haven't heard Nigel's records. Crazy violin playing for people who love guitar rock. "Gypsy music" is awesome and should take the World by storm just like the Cuban music have done.
