Album Description
2007 Grammy nominee Andrew Russo rides his supercharged piano into the twenty-first century with fourteen dirty little secrets packed with verve and humor, crankiness and delight, sweat and sarcasm, attitude and acrobatics, power and peril, joy and turbulence, punch and grace-fourteen short masterworks by twelve of today's most relevant composers!A number of classical albums feature recitals of short 'encore' piano pieces, mostly nienteenth-century trifles. Dirty Little Secret has a similar structure-that is, it is a piano album with many short tracks. However, it reflects both a repertoire and attitude that belong to this century of sound bites, downloads, and the cynical sarcasm of Generation X.
A versatile, prolific artist both onstage and in the recording studio, American pianist Andrew Russo has made a name for himself through his work with many of today's leading composers in the US and Europe. As a recitalist, Russo's programs frequently feature premieres. Trained classically at the Juilliard School and the Hochschule fur Music and Theater Mendelssohn in Leipzig, he pursued further specialized training in Paris with Frederic Chiu. In addition to his extensive solo activities, Russo is a member of the piano/cello/percussion trio Real Quiet, a group much involved in commissioning new music.
"A pianist who knows no limits" -- London Times "Andrew Russo is by no means just `another pianist.'" -- Gramophone

AS HEARD AND RECOMMENDED ON ALL THINGS CONSIDERED!!!"This is a fine recital by a pair of artists with lots of talent and a sense of adventure. It stands out from the crowd, and that's no mean accomplishment." CLASSICSTODAY
This album contains a unique program chosen around the theme of folklore or in the case of Stravinsky, older existing themes brought into a composer's own style and era. Over 76 minutes of rarely recorded and interesting repertoire on a single disc! Born into a family of musicians in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Denise Djokic has been called the most talented young cellist in the world. Her appearance at the 2002 Grammy Awards confirmed her as a young star in the classical field, and she was recently offered a contract with Sony Classical. She has played with major orchestras and music festivals, and her performances are heard frequently on CBC and NPR programs. With his personal style, incomparable stage presence and refined ear, pianist David Jalbert is one of the most exciting talents of his generation.

Album Description
"Wood's open luminous tones, seamless lines and impeccable technique charmed the ears, conjuring almost vocal sounds from music he shaped with seductive tenderness." - TORONTO STAR"Encores there must be wherever Wood and Riley play: theirs is a beautiful collaboration Wood is always a joy to hear " - GRAMOPHONE
"Jasper Wood plays with a firm, rich tone and he's excellently balanced against David Riley's sparkling piano accompaniments." - DAVID HURWITZ, CLASSICS TODAY
Violinist Jasper Wood has garnered international critical acclaim for his solo performances with orchestras and chamber music concerts. Known for his intimate and dazzling recitals, Wood is sought after as a musician with his own personal voice. He can be heard frequently on NPR in the United States, and on the CBC in Canada. Pianist David Riley gave more than 50 concerts the past season, including two at the National Art Gallery in Washington DC and Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall. He has been heard on dozens of radio broadcasts on WQXR and WNYC in New York, Canada's CBC, and NPR's Performance Today. Wolfgang Sawallisch appointed Ricardo Morales Principal Clarinet of the Philadelphia Orchestra in 2002. Prior to this, he was Principal Clarinet of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra; a position he assumed at the age of 21 under the direction of James Levine. Bartók's two Rhapsodies were originally written with orchestral accompaniment in 1928. Contrasts was written at the suggestion of Benny Goodman and premiered in 1940. All three works were written for violinist Joseph Szigeti, who arranged several of Bartók's piano pieces For Children into the Hungarian Folk Tunes. The Sonatina is based on Transylvanian folk tunes as arranged by Endre Gertler. Zoltán Székely did the arrangements for the Rumanian Folk Dances. Recorded in Toronto, 2005.

Album Description
"Jalbert's piano-playing is remarkable for its sweep, confidence, sensitivity, power and color." -FANFARE"Jalbert appears to be able to do anything he wants at the piano." - ClassicsToday
Fauré's Nocturnes are, after Chopin's, among the most beautiful and beloved in the piano literature. They span almost his entire creative career, a period of nearly 50 years. This recording attempts to reconcile the two seemingly opposite aspects of Fauré's piano writing: the clarity of rhythm and texture, and the warm lyricism he inherited from his Romantic predecessors.Pianist David Jalbert is one of the most firebrand talents of the new generation. With his personal style, incomparable stage presence and refined ear, he has convinced audiences and critics everywhere in North America. His first solo disc, dedicated to the works of Corigliano and Rzewski, was launched to great applause on Endeavour in 2004. Another disc of music for cello and piano followed in 2005. Jalbert's interests in literature, cinema, rock `n' roll and blues shine through his musical selections, which can be heard regularly on CBC Radio and Radio-Canada broadcasts. Notes in English and French by acclaimed Fauré biographer Jessica Duchen.

Like hearing Faure's Nocturnes for the first time.......2007-08-04
Great Faure CD.......2007-07-28
In these solo piano pieces, generally from the latter half of Faure's career, both the Romantic inspirations and the Impressionistic harmonies are evident. I am reminded of Brahms in Faure's use of the lower register of the keyboard which gives a more haunting sound, and of Mendelssohn in Faure's beautiful melodies, especially in his earlier Romances sans Paroles, a tribute to Mendelssohn's Songs without Words. But in Faure's nocturnes, influenced by Chopin, there are harmonies unlike any other in the Romantic era; ambiguous, hazy, and very Debussian. His Nocturnes No. 7 and 8 of 1898 are unbelievably radical for 19th century music, by any standard. My favorite Faure nocturne is No. 11, very heartbreaking and beautiful. The reason I like Faure's nocturnes to Chopin's is because they are not as straight forward. With Faure you have to really sit down and take time for repeated listenings to fully appreciate the beauty in Faure's music. Overall, Faure uses a romantic framework to advance his very forward-looking impressionistic style. If you love Faure as I do I highly recommend this cd.

Album Description
Marc Mellits was born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1966. He was already composing piano music before he started formal piano lessons at age six. He went on to study at the Eastman School of Music, Yale School of Music, Cornell University, and Tanglewood. His composition teachers during this period included Samuel Adler, Martin Bresnick, Bernard Rands, Christopher Rouse, Joseph Schwantner, Roberto Sierra, and Steven Stucky, yet one hears other influences in Mellits' music. The sound worlds of Steve Reich (whom Mellits considers a mentor) and Philip Glass resonate inside of this music, not to mention the rock and funk music from his childhood in the seventies. Mellits is a miniaturist, composing works that are comprised of short, contrasting movements. His music is eclectic, all-encompassing, and open to reflecting whatever enters his life and mind during the period of creation. Just recently, he was awarded the prestigious 2004 Foundation for Contemporary Arts Award. Although this recording is the first dedicated completely to his music, other Mellits works can be heard on Santa Fe New Music and CRI/Emergency Music. Real Quiet is a three-man band dedicated to creating an exclusive repertoire of hard-edged acoustic and electro-acoustic music by today's leading composers. Tight Sweater was written in 2005 for Real Quiet on a commission from the Muzik3 Foundation. Fruity Pebbles, the earliest work represented on this album, established Mellits's reputation as "the witty post-minimalist." Like many of the post-minimalist composers, Mellits has found a way to use minimalist techniques without relying on them entirely. Agu was written in 2004 for Andrew Russo on a commission from the James S. Marcus Foundation. Disciples of Gouda was written in 2003 on a joint commission from the Common Sense Composers Collective and Essential Music.Customer Reviews:

Album Description
"A violinist of soul and patrician refinement." -- New York Times"Brilliant instrumental command." -- Billboard
"Bachmann is astonishing in every musical and technical regard." -- Boston Globe
"Maria Bachmann is an aristocratic marvel. She has perfect technique, but more importantly, she understands how to tell music to audience so that they understand what the composer really had in mind. This is a rare gift." -- John Corigliano, composer, The Red Violin
Prize-winning violinist Maria Bachmann has been a featured soloist around the world and her recordings have generated critical raves; in a review of her debut CD, FRATRES, the New York Daily News named the release "the best classical recording of the year." Bachmann is an eminent proponent of contemporary music who has been praised for her romantic and deeply personalized approach to contemporary repertoire. She has premiered and recorded works by John Corigliano, Paul Moravec, William Bolcom, and many other living composers. Pianist Jon Klibonoff has established a versatile career as orchestra soloist, recitalist, and chamber musician throughout the US and abroad. He has several CD recordings to his credit, including two of twentieth-century violin and piano music with Bachmann. Maria Bachmann's title choice for this recording, Red Violin, suggests not only the Chaconne of Corigliano's Red Violin Concerto but also the brilliant color, energy, and lyricism that pervade every work on the disc. Here, Bachmann and Klibonoff have achieved a statement that reflects both her own adventuresome personality and a mutual artistic vision the two have shared for twenty years. Another driving force of this recording is Bachmann's long-time association with composer Paul Moravec, winner of the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for his Tempest Fantasy, which was written for Maria Bachmann and Jon Klibonoff's Trio Solisti (with cellist Alexis Pia Gerlach) and clarinetist David Krakauer. In 2000, John Corigliano won the Academy Award for the movie score of The Red Violin. In 2006, the Baltimore Symphony commissioned a violin concerto, developed from themes from The Red Violin. While the Chaconne for Violin and Orchestra is the first movement of the concerto, it remains a separate work both in its orchestral version and in the violin and piano adaptation.
