12 Girls Band began as a series of auditions held throughout China, seeking thirteen attractive and versatile young female instrumentalists (although only twelve appear onstage at any time). After taking Japan by storm, their debut US release, Eastern Energy (2004), created a sensation, crowning Billboard's World Music chart. Since then, the group has become a firm favorite at PBS and NPR, with several prestigious international concert bookings on the horizon. For the present recording, the ensemble ranges between local folk songs, newly composed tunes and works by Sting ("Fragile"), J.S. Bach (an excerpt from Concerto For Violin in A Minor), G. Puccini ("Nessun Dorma" from Turandot), and James Horner ("My Heart Will Go On," the love theme from Titanic). Arranged by Bob Belden and Liang Jianfeng, who leads the ensemble's backing guitar combo, the overall effect is not unlike an Eastern equivalent of Celtic Woman, minus the vocals but every bit as energetic, polished, and astutely marketed. Musically, the tunes are tightly conceptualized and performed, marred only by overuse of a 4/4 snare backbeat and the fact that certain Chinese instruments, although breathtakingly lovely in a more traditional setting, are not always ideally suited to the material at hand. But even so, it's a charming, graceful and high-spirited enterprise;

ringtone88.com to other orchestras, it is inevitable that someone in the group would not be able to perform with 12 GB therefore the thirteenth member ensures that the group will be performing with 12 members. I first discovered this group via a tv commercial a few years ago and immediately loved what I heard. "Easter Energy" is the group's first US album. It is a collection of classical, modern pop, and traditional Chinese music. The group's interpretations of Coldplay's "Clocks" and Enya's "Only Time" are excellent. Twelve Girls Band succeeds in re-interpreting the songs with their blend of classical and traditional Chinese music yet maintaining the song's pop essence. My personal favorite song is "Earthly Stars (Unsung Heroes)". What I love aobu the song is that the song has a majestic epic sound that would be perfect in a film like "Curse of the Golden Flower" or "The Promise". There is a bonus dvd that has live footage of the talented band which is worth viewing. All in all great cd.

12 GB blends the old and the new in their music by combing traditional Chinese musical instruments with modern styles and themes. They create very memorable music that provides a wonderful backdrop when studying Chinese language and culture.

I bought this CD just so I could hear their stellar arrangement of Coldplay's, "Clocks" over and over again. Well worth the purchase price as their version is other-worldly beautiful.

Twelve Girls Band..........2005-08-18

I first heard about this "band" on a television commercial back in the fall of 2004. I was struck by their version of the song "Clocks" and it got my curiosity going! So, I did a little online research and discovered that their ensemble had been around for awhile. I ordered my copy of "Eastern Energy" and waited. I must agree, it was worth the wait! For me, their musicianship and their ability to segue from ancient to modern themes floored me! It is one of those "set it and forget it" collections that everyone should add to their library! I recommend it for everyone! Five stars!!

My daughter turned me on to these gals when I was looking for music to go with my Mongolian Hot Pot party. They are sort of an Asian Mannheim Steamroller sound. I would love to see them live.

Uplifting and Energizing Music.......2005-04-11

Something I can listen to while I am cleaning my place or washing dishes as it is as energizing as techno music.

Before 12 Girls Band landed the USA, it was very hot in Japan. It was, in fact, a Japanese music industry who brought them to the market. Whole Japan went crazy for the band a few years ago. It was fair to call it a 12 Girls Band fever. I saw it happening while I was visiting Japan.

Those Chinese traditional instruments can be soft and touchy to your heart as much as soothing. Purely insturumental with no voice at all. I like this as background music while I am doing something, like cleaning, cooking, reading, or painting, etc. Not the type of music I LISTEN to. It is rather music I play as I do something.

I don't usually post reviews but since there's only one other review posted here I thought I'd better give this one my five stars ASAP. I've only heared disc one, only because I have a stack of new CDS and DVDs that I've got on my to do list. However I really like what I've heared. This CD does show a somewhat different side of the 12 Girls Band but it's not that different. This CD has a couple of rockers on it but it also has some nice, romantic, ambient tunes and those are the type of songs I actually prefer from 12 Girls. But, hey, it's all good. If you like Eastern Energy I'd say go ahead and check this one out too. I'm very surprised the other reviewer didn't like it, but I'm not knocking the review. We're all entitled to our opinion and I respect that. I'm looking forward to hearing disc two and I may post a review of it unless more reviews start trickling in here. Peace.

Much of the credit belongs to their song writer and arranger Lian Jianfeng of course, but then this couldn't be done without the 12 (thirteen) Girls. This CD centralizes around a cultural and historical theme that is explained in the accompanying VCD which, essentually, points out that a historical Chinese location called Dunhuang was a crossroads for different cultures in the past. Knowing that gives this CD a deeper meaning. Nevertheless the music is great on it's own merits. One thing about 12 Girls Band CDs is, personally, I am never happy with the order of the songs. They never seem to flow the way I would like them to so I usually program my own song order and burn a disc from that that I can listen to. This is the order I prefer to hear on this disc: Dunhuang Ruten Romantic Energy El Condor Pasa Flower From Beginning Till Now Whispering Earth Carnival Ihojin Yangguan Mogao Grottoes Yueya Spring Tang Court Ensemble Ten-Sided Ambush / Lovers River Shule Fairies of Yarden So that's how I like it anyway. You can try it if you want. One highlight on this disc is Ten-Sided Ambush / Lovers. These two songs, which play like one song, were originally performed on the House of Flying Daggers soundtrack. This arrangement is absolutely beautiful. I only wish it wasn't so short. I would recommend an imported DVD/CD set of their recent live concert in 2005 (performed in Japan if I'm correct). I can't type a title because it's written in Chinese. Amazon doesn't sell it but if you try hard you can find it on the web. This concert video is from the ROmantic Energy tour and contains some of these songs, as well as other favorites. For all the debate that will surely ensue over who was chosen and who was passed over, it's obvious that careful, loving attention has gone into the selection of content for the happy 72 to be admitted to this special pantheon (certain especially significant pianists are allotted two or even three volumes, such as Vladimir Horowitz). Each of the handsomely designed, sepia-tinted volumes--adorned with a black and white photo--contains two CDs and a thoughtful essay on the artist in question. Prospective buyers should be aware that this sampler volume offers only short vignettes (averaging between two and three minutes), along with a thumbnail sketch, for each pianist. Still, it's a smorgasbord of morsels that allow you to taste some of the major trends in philosophy and approach to the instrument throughout the century (and reaching well back into the 19th), and the overlap of repertory permits some fascinating quick comparisons as style and technique have evolved. Delve into some of the artists in the series--say Alfred Brendel or Martha Argerich--and trace in greater depth the piano's identity crisis. There are countless discoveries to be made here, both for the connoisseur and for anyone taking the first step into getting acquainted with great keyboard artistry. --Thomas May Customer Reviews: Tantalizing preview of good things to come.......2003-01-07 This is an introductory 2-CD set to introduce a very grand series of CD's featuring the 20th Century's greatest pianists. As a sampler, there are some incredible jewels here, for example Nikita Magaloff's sparkling Chopin Tarantelle and Paganini Etude No.3: 'La Campanella' played excitingly by John Ogdon. There is even an early recording of Paderewski playing (predictably) Paderewski. This sampler seems a bit of a Euro-centric, but the editors wisely chose to include Earl Wild doing Gershwin and Roslyn Tureck doing Bach. I ended up purchasing the Andre Watts volume from this series, and wondered what it would be like to own the whole shootin' match. I saw the entire CD series on display in a top notch music store in Germany--it was overwhelming to see the line of brown covers stretching impressively across an entire wall. The sampler is a good way to have a taste of this ambitious series of the giants of piano in the 20th Century. I listen to it often with great enjoyment. RE: Glenn Gould.......2001-05-23 RE: Those of you who complained/rejoiced about Gould's abscence: he is not on the sampler, true, I believe for... purposes or something along those lines.
