Customer Reviews:
Warabe is a surprising, delightful, melodic ride..........2000-03-16
Warabe is one of two CDs released simultaneously from Kodo (the other, Tsutsumi, I will review later.) On Warabe, there are 11 tracks of a much lighter feel than many of Kodo's previous CDs, but it's an excellent mix of pieces by various composers. The first track, "Yokigen" (Mirthful Mood) is a splash of cymbals, steel drums, bamboo flutes, Taiko, and a few other percussion instruments. It's a happy, festive piece. It gets hard to get this song out of your head, and personally, I don't mind. The composer, Akira Nanjo, also wrote "Ao no Yukue" (The Blue Beyond), which is another very different piece which mixes the beautiful voice of singer Yoko Fujimoto (accompanied by other Kodo members), assorted Taiko, and again, the steel drum. This piece is almost haunting, but much too up-tempo for that. Both of these pieces both stand out and are spectacular. There are other pieces on this track worth mentioning - namely, all of them - but let me just point out a few more: "Koro Koro" (Round and Round) is a quick piece with a simple melody. I think it's the first time there's been a piece composed by one of the female members (Michiko Yanagi) on a Kodo CD - I could be wrong, though - and it's a nice piece to listen to. "Ao-ki Kaze" (Wind from the Steppes) is a different piece. It uses the horse fiddle, which brings a Mongolian influence to the song. It pulses and flows like water on a shore, ebbing and crashing in a very natural timing. I also particularly like "Mogura" (Jungle Mole), and it's grown on me. It starts simple enough, with an easy pulse and rapid patterns. It evolves within a jungle-beat-style, incorporating some wicked (yet uncomplicated) solos inside the evolution. There are light pieces and driving ones, vocal masterpieces and flute-ladened gems. Compared to Tsutsumi, this CD definitely has much less of the thumping, pounding, booming bass that some Taiko listeners love. Even as one of those bass-lovers, I find this CD to be one of the best Kodo has done and a must-buy. I would strongly recommend purchase of Tsutsumi along with Warabe, however, as they both show a side of what Kodo can accomplish.
