Mix-tape battlecat Cassidy's first full-length album (the inaugural release on producer Swizz Beatz's Full Surface imprint) is a solid effort from a young Philly kid who built his rep on freestyle fanaticism, putting to rest doubts of his ability to cut it as a studio MC. Although it does come off as a singles-oriented album, most everything found on Split Personality is worth a listen or two. The fact that Swizz Beats handles the bulk of production duties may initially scare away some potential buyers, but his played out "bells and whistles" sound has been successfully revamped with heavier bottom-bass and some nice vintage samples. And Cassidy responds well to the sonic landscape he's been provided with, skillfully expounding upon a surprisingly diverse range of topics. Even the inevitable fumbles have their charm; Cassidy's aggressive flow and tart interpretation of threadbare subject matter rescue weak tracks like the Nelly-esque "I'm Hungry" from instant "fast forward" status. --Rebecca Levine

After creating a pretty decent buzz on the mixtape circuit, Cassidy finally released his debut solo album, "Split Personality" in early 2004. His first single, the R. Kelly featured "Hotel" got mad radio spins and got lots of people checking for him, but can Cass stay true to his roots and be street or sell out and become another bubble gum rapper?

Wow this album is almost completely wack. There's wayyy too many radio friendly tracks, especially for the ladies. Cassidy definitely came into the game on the wrong note with this album. If you like bubble gum rap or just like what's playing on the radio, then this albums for you. If not just stay away.

2 out of 5 stars Cassidy ----- Split Personality.......2006-01-13

Cassidy earned his way into the spotlight the old fashioned way, battling. When Cassidy stepped to Freeway, nobody in the City of Brotherly Love expected to see the challenger last a minute in the ring with the hometown and Roc-a-Fella Records endorsed favorite. But somehow, someway, Cassidy knocked out Free with enough gusto to not only stay around, but to land a deal with Clive Davis' J Records. But for the grimey battle rapper that AllHipHop followed so closely in his mixtape episodes, Cassidy was introduced to the rest of the nation with "Hotel" featuring R. Kelly, a club track so candy sweet that it leaves cavities. Is this the full story, or is the rest of Cassidy's debut, Split Personality worthy of that initial buzz?

The answer doesn't jump off of the album. But after all, LL Cool J isn't typically the same LL that went after Moe Dee, Ice-T, and Canibus. Maybe Cassidy is much the same. "Tha Problem" is the first time Cassidy steps with a harder stance and he doesn't really hold up. The track uses an obnoxious Public Enemy loop that builds energy but leaves the listener with blue balls thanks to Cassidy failing to deliver the heat. That heat remains on hold until Cassidy and Jadakiss team up for "Can I Talk to You." This track's brass bassline and 70's Cop Drama feel stands out on the album. Here, Cassidy gives us the delivery that he used to get signed. But for the most part, this album's lyrical content is tragic. Cassidy goes from a track about how he's "Hungry", to sixteen other tracks bragging about how he upped his status courtesy of the label. The punchlines are sub-par and the hooks are outdated reminders of early Ruff Ryder compilations. When Noreaga was hounded for rhyming the same words together, he had a reputation to uphold. Cassidy is doing it on his debut, and that's a dangerously lazy approach to rapping.

The album's production is authentic. Cassidy didn't try too hard to copy what he has done. Instead, he wanted to make a Rap/R&B album, and succeeded. The actual music throughout this project is very danceable. "Around the World" is a track that would make an excellent single. It's radio-worthy, and has a great Pop beat; a club record in full. The melodies depend on overexposure in the radio and video markets to succeed. Had it not been a single, "Hotel" doesn't jump off the album. That leads one to believe that this album does have the potential to still be highly successful.

In terms of art, and its homage to Hip-Hop, Cassidy fails. His mixtape drops last year were buzz-worthy. However, Cassidy admits in a verse that this album was made in less than two months. It doesn't sound like a rushed album. But even with The Lox and Snoop, and others getting involved, this album is not for the streets, but the clubs.

2.5 stars.

Alex Fox is so sensual in his music. He and his guitar are one. You can feel his love of the music he plays. It is very good background music for a cocktail party, and I also recommend Guitar On Fire.

for bringing Alex to the big world of music fans. As you can see, people ask the question: "Where has this guy been hiding ?!" Not anylonger. We have all 5 CDs you sent to us and listen to them quite often. We love Latino music, especially gypsy and flamenco type. We have quite few of those (Lopez, Jessy Cook, Armik, Shanin and Sepehr, Strunz&Farah, Enchinas, etc.) - most of them are very pleasant to listen to. However, when we listen to Alex, we see him playing "vertical" guitar, his beautiful sons accompanying him and you, Liza, dancing around him on your 12 centimeters hills. Than, you know what happens to crazy Russians - they start to go with a rithm and dance like it's their last chance to dance in this life. We love you all. We love to watch your video, too. May be you should sell it to the public.

5 out of 5 stars Where has this guy been hiding ?!.......1999-05-11

"Stairway to Heaven" is a song that has been done to death...in my opinion, it's a chestnut. But Alex Fox has breathed new life into it, and made me think it's a beautiful song once more! Fox's own compositions, like "Baila Bailaora" ("Dance Dancer") are outstanding! I can listen to this music over and over and not tire of it. Absolutely beautiful ! Thanks to amazon, I've discovered Alex Fox's music. The three cd's I've already received (this one, "Fly Away," and "Malegueña") have impressed me no end. I'm eagerly looking forward to receiving his other two cd's VERY SOON !

Remember when Mercury Rev emerged from their early-career noisy haze and presented Deserter's Songs? Keep that event in mind as you hear Luke Steele (a.k.a. the voice of the Sleepy Jackson) intone atop the orchestral swirl, vibraphone, and massed-vocal harmonies of "You Needed More," the opening track of Personality. It's the album's most lush tune, with the remaining 12 repurposing the song's textures at will--and adding pedal steel, more pronounced drums, and wonderful, controlled guitar distortion. Steele's mastery of the Pet Sounds palette is vast, creating a floating ambience that multiplies the bandleader's core strangeness--his fascination with confusion, psychedelia, and--at root--being and nothingness. As a follow-up to the much simpler perfection of Sleepy's criminally under-accorded 2003 debut, Lovers, this is an ambitious mélange of all the sounds Steele loves. Luckily, they play together wonderfully. If you're Sufjan Stevens jones is hungry and you can tolerate a more avant-garde take on orch-pop, then you have to hear Personality. --Andrew Bartlett

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Cotton Candy.......2007-05-20

"One Was a Spider, One Was a Bird" is my first encounter with the Sleepy Jackson Personality. It is an ambitious set that works sporadically. On "God Knows" the background vocals with their resemblance to John Lennon are more interesting than the melody, although lyrically there are sweet sentiments, "All I want is to lead you there into the light." The great weakness of the set is reflected in "Higher than Hell." It's got lovely orchestral flourishes, but other than the production, there is no melody or lyric that is particularly memorable. It's like a cotton candy confection without much there. "Don't Say" is melodically boring. The good thing about this set is that if you're going to be imitative, pick the best to imitate, which Sleepy J does with George Harrison & the Beatles. However, the melodies are faceless, the lead singer doesn't have an interesting or emotionally gripping voice & the lyrics are often inane. The marvelous thing about "Spider/Bird" is its production, which is stunning. Taxi!

1 out of 5 stars Are you kidding?.......2007-02-04

Beatles? Beach Boys? Pet Sounds? My dog howls better than that guy sings. Just because he puts "God" in his titles doesn't mean it sounds like two of the greatest rock and roll song writing groups ever. Where are your ears? This is a poor man's ELO at best, which is nothing compared to Lennon/McCartney and Wilson. Where is the melody? the hook? I'll say one thing - all the songs are consistent - they sound the same.

5 out of 5 stars Immense and Expansive.......2006-10-14

First of all, take a good look at the cover of this album, and count how many times or places you find the face of The Sleepy Jackson's frontman Luke Steele. More simply, contemplate the significance of Steele standing at the forefront, carrying who else but himself. It's perfectly fitting for the title of the album, 'Personality', but slightly indicative of something else as well. In the liner notes you'll find Steele describing the music making as an "odd flourishing flower", made throughout sessions of both beauty and turbulence from which he couldn't run away without destroying the album or even the band altogether. In any case, the resulting record produced by the imaginations of Steele and company is very immense in that it's a big step forward from their previous album, Lovers. The themes are spacious and philosophical, while the expansive element of the album is provided mainly by the ethereal 20/20 Orchestra. The production and orchestration of 'Personality' is lush and grandiose, containing brilliant melodies, catchy rhythm and interesting lyrics. There are numerous songs here that deserve mainstream play, but more importantly I would describe the album as being cohesive, strange and very dreamlike. Considering the past instability of the band, I think it's slightly premature to place huge expectations on The Sleepy Jackson's future projects just yet, but this one is definitely a gem and should be savored. It's a cool and curious album.

5 out of 5 stars Neptune in Sagittarius, Venus in Libra.......2006-08-28

I've been reading reviews that say this CD is a Pop album, that it sounds like the Beatles and/or the Beach Boys..... I couldn't disagree more....... It's a rock opera, if ever there is one, finely tuned and hip shakingly fabulous!! If you've never heard Luke's voice, you are in for an incredible surprize !! He draws you into his world and lets you wade around in his creativity. What more would you ask of a musical genius? Some songs are tender and make your soul swoon, some are rock and roll mantra, but all of them stick to your aura like glue.

He's chatting with God through some of it and trying to answer questions for himself....
or perhaps, for all of us. Personally, I like dancing around the house with Luke and God...it's like having what's forbidden, sweetened by the heavenly cosmos. Oh, and by the way, the astrological aspects?....he's got them..... the most intrinsically, talented muscians do......
Keep dreaming, Luke, we like the mystical ride. Cheers, Kiwi

4 out of 5 stars Personality - One was a Beach Boy and One was a Beatle.......2006-07-25

The Sleepy Jackson's second opus after their successful 2003 debut "Lovers" captures Luke Steele at his visionary best.
Teaming up again with Malcolm Clark (drums) and a host of other strong talent (including Davey Lane from You Am I who features on several tracks), the Perth act have a distinctly, as the title of the review suggest, Beach Boy/Beatles sound to it.

Kicking off with the very 60's sounding "You Needed More" we are then led into three Beach Boy sounds in "Devil Was In My Yard" and "God Lead Your Soul" and "Work Alone". In "God Knows" Luke Steele will have you singing out All i Want is to Lead you there, as we really get into some catchy chorus melodies.

"I understand what you want but i just don't agree" is a prime example of this with juanita Tippins beautiful with her backing vocals. This track is one of several tracks that could have easily been written out of John Lennons writing pad. Think early Beatles.
"Miles Away" takes the album into a country mode for just a few minutes before the gospel feeling "Higher than Hell" and rocking "Play a Little Bit for Love" continue the diversity of Personality...
In "Don't Say" and ""You won't bring people down in my town" you'll have Steele change the mood by singing some dark lyrics such as: "You're a terror in the northern part of town. A crooner in the poorest side of South. I always caught you on the ranking down, down, down down, down, down"

But this is once again just a change of direction for "Dream On" is an epic in itself - although just three minutes long.

"How was i supposed to Know" finishes Personality... on a rather melodic note. Quite fitting really as the album is full of them.

Steele has added the 20/20 Orchestra choir group in this album, and they feature on all but two of the songs "Work Alone" & "Miles Away". This is probably the best thing that Steele has improved for Personality...(and there are a lot of things to love). If you're looking for stand outs it's hard to discount any one song. But either way, you'll have to explore yourself.

Personality... is different from anything youy will hear on the radio this year, and indeed previous years for that matter. That's what makes Luke Steeles effort seem risky, but it works.

4 out of 5 stars The East/West Connection From Oakland, Cali.......2006-09-21

D-Loc's "Split Personality" is a well rounded balance of West Coast house party music and 80's New York style Hip-Hop. This album was an independent Bay Area release in early 1990 but the songs were recorded in 89'. This was before the Northern California rap scene found it's own style and sound through hardcore music. There is no cursing with the exception of Bit** being said once on "Ace In The Hole". Songs like "Be A Friend To The End" and the last track "We Can Do This" contain positive social commentary over backpack rap beats that would make Mos Def and Talib Kweli smile. The only problem is that the liner notes credit D-Loc's partner in rhyme Richie Rich for writing all of his lyrics, a Hip-Hop no-no in any generation. That destroys D-Loc's credibility on track 6 "WorldWide MC" but he still has the voice and charisma to carry the whole album. Other than that, this is excellent music for its' time. The production sounds like something that was released on a major label in the 80's. I could imagine this record being important back in the day when the Bay Area ghettos needed their own Hip-Hop voice.

Album Description

Exciting American pianist and radio personality Christopher O'Riley is the perfect interpreter for this dark, brooding music. His virtuosity is perfectly captured with the new Sony DSD system, which has the highest digital sampling rate in the world. . Initial reaction to this disc has been unprecedented.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Mixed bag.......2006-03-15

The music on this CD comes from some of Scriabin's most famous pieces (Preludes, Etudes, Sonata #4 and Sonata #10, and the Vers La Flamme). Some very technically superb and spectacular music making here, Riley especially shines in the fireworks of the Vers La Flamme and the sparkling Sonata #10. However in most of the performances I don't agree with his interpretation -- perhaps I'm too used to listening to other interpretations. His tempos seem either too slow or too fast. This is particularly apparent in his playing of the Op. 11, no. 1 for example, which should be a slow, sonorous piece which O'Riley races through. The music is not helped by the muddled sonics of the audio. Either the acoustics are not right or something is wrong with the recording. Perhaps there's been some post-recording processing to make this very stylized, echo-y sound. Overall I'm not very happy with this CD, but O'Riley's performance of the Sonata #10 and Vers La Flamme alone are reason enough to give this one a listen through.

2 out of 5 stars Scriabin's ears.......2004-06-02

The performances on this CD are full of poetry. Most of the pieces recorded are the preludes, the slow, sombre, 'mystical' elements weaving in and out of O'Riley's fingers. Whereas O'Riley is able to bring out these elements with effectiveness, his overall playing lacks dynamics of any kind. He plays with no abandon whatsoever. Sonatas 4 and 10 are on this CD. I could not finish listening to the 4th, maybe because I am so use to THE Hamelin version. As for his performance of the 10th, it was mild. The last track, Vers la Flamme-again, no abandon, no dynamics. A very hairy piece I admit. But Sofronitsky I think does it justice. Every reviewer gives this CD 5 stars. Poetry is fine, but you need more than this to play Scriabin. O'Riley just doesn't quite cut it.

5 out of 5 stars Something has happened.......2001-07-17

I don't know who is O'Riley but now I know that he has been there. I use to hear this music almost every day . I have no less than 20 different versions and all play this musc with better or with poorer sight..... from here. O'Riley plays from there. This recording has reminded me what the great words mean. We assist to a exhibition of musical logic. Nor the logic of a player. Not the logic of a composer. There is no player, no composer here. It is too pure. It is as the life of an unknown, but powerful and misterious organism..This Vers la flanme is the real end of all musc. The rest is silence.

5 out of 5 stars I cannot believe this is an American pianist!.......2000-04-14

When I heard this recording I had to look twice to see that this Christopher O'Riley was an American (and a handsome one, at that, judging from the CD cover). As a neighbour of the Russians, I have always loved this composer. But I did not know that a musician from so far away could have such passion and empathy for the music of this visionary and mysterious composer, Scriabin. What a joy to have all of these pieces compiled so artistically. And interepreted with such soul.

5 out of 5 stars Luminous, unforgettable Scriabin!.......2000-04-10

The piano music of Alexander Scriabin, like that of Beethoven, documents both an extraordinary spiritual journey and the emergence of an utterly original musical voice silenced by untimely death. As with Beethoven and also Scriabin's beloved Chopin, he was an incomparable pianist, and the instrument was the foundation of his soundworld. From the charms of his early preludes, etudes, and mazurkas, distinctive even as they evoke Chopin, to the blazing, ecstatic luminosity of his final oeuvre, Scriabin's music for the piano constitutes a kind of sonic autobiography more eloquent by far than words.

It is not impossible to find a few excellent recordings in the catalog, mostly by celebrated Russian virtuosi like Ashkenazy, Horowitz, and Magaloff. But there has never been anything like this extraordinary new CD by the American pianist Christopher O'Riley. Fresh from his triumphant collaboration in New York with the Martha Clark dance company, in which much of this music was used to enact scenes from Chekhov, O'Riley has created the most satisfying Scriabin program on record. This generous collection weaves together shimmering threads from each phase of his creative and spiritual development into a seamless fabric. Everything fits, as if these pieces, composed over the span of Scriabin's career, were actually a single, hypnotic sonata culminating in the haunting enigmas of 'Vers la flamme'.

At times, O'Riley's affinity for this music borders on the supernatural. Without calling attention to himself, he enters into an almost priestly communion with the composer, perfectly capturing each facet of Scriabin's sorcery, by turns febrile and serene, voluptuous and beatific. And the sound quality is also natural and sympathetic.

'Vers la flamme' can take its rightful place among the most enthralling piano recordings ever made. It is also the perfect introduction to one of music's true visionaries. Don't hesitate to buy it!

4 out of 5 stars Comprehensive retrospective of Hitchcock's quirkiness.......2000-06-14

This album covers Hitchcock's early work w/ the Egyptians, his later work w/ the Egyptians and his brilliant solo acoustic ablum, Eye. Unfortunately it offers nothing from his most upbeat, poppy album, Globe of Frogs, and because of its nature as a compilation, fails to replicate the unity of any of the individual albums. For someone wanting to sample from RH's broad album mix, this is a good start, though not as rewarding as the 2-CD Soft Boys (his early band) compilation, "1976-1981."

1 out of 5 stars Is profanity required?.......2002-03-06

The overall music is pretty good production-wise but does a talented rapper really need profanity to get his point across?Lyrically it's garbage and clearly lacking in maturity. I think this guy needs to wake up and smell the coffee and get pass the kids play. With the music talent behind this recording, maybe its time all rappers go beyond the street mentallity and move toward positive thinking. It would have a huge impact on an audience that is already riddled with life's hardships. We need to do more for the paying public than just spill our guts for a few bucks!

3 out of 5 stars surprised me.......2001-07-17

It seems that this album has been out since last June, and I barely found out about this guy. He's a pretty tight rapper and I was surprised when I heard he was white. He's not like an Eminem, in that he's more underground and has his own flow. Definetely check out the the cut "Falling Down" because he rhymes his way through suicidal verses. He talks about putting a gun to his mouth and stuff like that. It has a tight beat and if you're into the art of hip hop, then this song is tight. Don't take his rhymes seriously because it's just a song. If you're into hip hop, it's up to u if u want to peep this one. It isn't a classic album, but it isn't one you should pass on either.

Album Description

One moment relentless, another stark and beautiful, the 12-song recording, which was mixed by the masterful John Agnello (Dinosaur Jr, The Breeders, Jay Farrar) and produced by Five Eight and Geoff Melkonian (of the Josh Joplin Group), is an engaging yet volcanic amalgam of manic infused melodic rock that flows and explodes from song to song as the band delves into the darker depths of life, death, regrets and relationships. Throughout, Five Eight takes on desperation and gives it hope through soul and song, something (drummer) Mike Rizzi describes as "personal and heartbreaking, for the most part, but for some reason I want to sing them loud". Indeed, never before has it been so enjoyable to listen and sing along to someone else's pain.

On tracks such as "I'm Still Around," "I Don't Give a Damn" and "Lousy Decision," Five Eight matches defiance and disappointment with deft melodies that harken back to the definitive Athens sound, standing firmly on the great side of pop music. "A Man Is A Pent Up Thing" and "Square Peg," on the other hand, hit with insistent punk rhythms that pace angular guitar textures while "Bad Juices" and "Bad For Us" take a more melancholy approach, yet strike with intensity through impassioned deliveries, smart harmonies and escalating conclusions.

And perhaps the album's opener, "Criminal," sums up best the journey taken on Five Eight. Tackling a person's paralyzing guilt for causing the death of a friend, "Criminal" charges ahead with a propulsive punk rhythmic vibe, and then twists and turns through evocative pop territory as it allures with distinctive countermelodies and builds to a climactic end, with (singer) Mike Mantione declaring, "I'm so gone." But just as the next song begins, he affirms, "I'm still around." It's a segue that provides a glimpse to an underlying theme throughout the album, a question Mantione poses as: "What if your world changes so drastically that the pain overwhelms you? What do you do?"

Mantione's answer: "I play in this band."

5 out of 5 stars Five 10.......2005-01-05

I have to give this band a 10 out of 10 on this one. Mike Mantione has once again proven why this band deserves the recognition it doesn't give a crap to have. A small-club band that sounds best LIVE braaks free on this release, leaving me feeling like the proud parent of a kid going off to college. I'm proud for their success but wish they would come back home and play the intimate clubs where I feel like I am the only person in the crowd. But they deserve so much more than that. Do yourself a favor and get this album. Go see them when they are in town. For they are not a child anymore. Well, actually, they are. And that's why I love them.

3 out of 5 stars GASOLINA PT. 2.......2004-09-04

I hate to write this...but,
I have been a big Five-Eight fan since around '92 and while I am all behind changing, evolving, etc... I can't help but what wonder if this is the same guy i loved listening to? Granted the guy can play guitar, write amazing lyrics and so on. However starting with Gasolina there seems to be a drastic shift in sense of melody and passion. On I Learned Shut Up, The Angriest Man, and Weirdo this band was THE best thing around and how they not made it huge, i don't know. But starting with Gasolina (omit the strange The Good Nurse...very different, and I give them credit for drastically trying something new)
This seems like a cliched sort of alt. rock. Don't get me wrong this is decent, but the first three were unique changed your life when you first heard them. Even "A Man Is A Pent Up Thing" does not compare to the original version. Growing is not always good and this band is case in point. Mantione has written some absolutely amazing things and lately has written some things i wouldn't give to an enemy (Guitar, RIGHT TO DRIVE???, Summer vacation, ETC..)
Now I'm not one who cares for sound quality (polished) but I do love passion regardless of what style of music and I can't help but feel that this band is simply making a living and not as hungry as it once was. Again this is still better than 95% of what is on the airwaves now.....Buy It then discover the first 3.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Band..........2004-07-05

Thank you Five Eight for making another excellent rock album. Raw energy and beautiful lyrics is what makes this album so incredible. I have listened to their other stuff, but I cannot stop listening to this CD. My favorite song on the disc is A Man Is A Pent Up Thing. Originally released on The Angriest Man CD, this song grabs me everytime I hear it. Mike sings, "I've got to love someone some way, I got to make it some someday, It's in my blood, When I write the greatest song, Well you know I still won't belong..." One of the most powerful songs I have ever heard. Go out and buy this now.

5 out of 5 stars Better than ever.......2004-07-05

Five Eight ceases to amaze me. Been a fan for years and when I thought that they couldn't get any better, they do. This album can stand next to any release in 2004. Buy this CD & turn up the volume and play Square Peg. I promise you will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD by a great band!!!.......2004-06-04

I have been listening to Five-Eight since happening upon them opening for Firehose at Trees in Dallas back in 1990. They grabbed me the minute I walked into the club, and I have been a huge fan ever since. Mike Mantione is a truly unique frontman. His frenetic guitar playing and nonstop energy on stage is like nothing else I have seen. And his song lyrics are genuine and heart-felt. I have actually used some of his lyrics in high school poetry units I have taught. I can only describe Five-Eight's combination of raw energy, humanity, and brutal honesty as being kind of like a spastic kid who has an uncontrollable fit, does his damage, has a quiet moment of embarrassment and shame after realizing what has happened, and then goes on and does it all over again. Their music captures true emotions and moments (feelings of rejection, neglect, alienation, misguided devotion, coming from a dysfunctional family, coping with loss, being a parent, and being a part of this grand, over-medicated world we live in), and it says it in words I wish I had written. I have, on several occassions, been brought to tears upon hearing certain lines from their songs (ie. "Goddamn It Paul," "She's Dropping the Bomb," and "Florence"), and the new self-titled CD is no different. "Square Peg" deals with Mike's life-long feeling of not quite fitting in, "I'm Still Around" captures the band's ability to write a great hook and melody, and "A Man Is a Pent Up Thing" (previously released on 1993's "Angriest Man" EP)explores the fine line between wanting and trying to belong and the struggle to control and hide the fears of it not working out. This is a great band and a great CD, and I wish every music fan could sit down and give them a listen. I only wish they would come through Texas a little more often.

Best known these days for her daytime talk-show stint with Regis Philbin, Kathie Lee Gifford is an accomplished vocalist, especially on slow, sentimental ballads. On Born for You, she tackles plenty of cabaret favorites that focus on the theme of lasting love. With influences that range from jazz ("Moondance") to classical ("On My Way to You"), Lee does her best to liven up these well-worn standards with her smooth-as-silk voice. "Circle Game" and "Only My Pillow Knows" feature subtle contributions from Dolly Parton, "Child in Me" employs a children's chorus, and a string section accompanies Lee on the title track. Unfortunately, many new listeners will find Lee's impeccable tone on these songs monotonous and disappointing. --Jason Verlinde

5 out of 5 stars If you don't buy this, then you are an idiot........2005-10-20

Any third world child laborer could bang a stick on a very empty can, while screeching out barbaric and unmelodious jibber jabber, and it could properly be called music. But what should we call a more glorious, though baroquely bloated, and very jolly sonic emanation; one that sounds as revolting and sublimely insipid as the album, "I was Born for You [!]" by the newly "slutted out" Kathie Lee Gifford? This is an important question, so I shall return to it later in this review.

For now, we will pursue the issue of whether or not this music would be sold at Wal-mart. We have not yet determined whether or not Gifford's album can be properly called music, or musical. Thus, this question cannot be confidently asked of the album "Born for You[!]", for even if there is evidence to support this contention, we could not assume therefore that "Born For You!" qua musical entity even exists.

When does odiousness become a form of knowing? If you don't know the answer to this question, you need to crank up the Kathy Lee. Right now. Just as some silly Jesuit might proclaim: That is My dog, That dog is a father, Therefore that dog is my father-no one could deny the claim that because Gifford was born, it is therefore established that she was Born for You. Just as the name of her album implies.

So, I conclude that you really need to hear this album. It doesn't matter if you're a rum-jhumbi banging coconuts against your chest, or a transgendered methadone bride...Kathy Lee Gifford was Born for you! When one imagines the dialectical relationship between musical standards, such as those on Gifford's album, and the negative whirling bacchanalian swirl of the transgenerational continuum of prog-rock sexuality, one can sometimes become frozen in formal quagmire of a corroded yet sonorous hyper-consciousness. That is why it is very important to remember that Kathy Lee Gifford is a very bad woman, who serves the devil 24 hours a day.

Buy a copy for yourself, and that lady you like from church!

4 out of 5 stars Beware of posters with an axe to grind........2005-02-18

Many of these 1-star postings are laughable and many are obviously from punks who never listened to the record and have sore need of a life. One's opinion of her as a person or a talk show host is not the issue here, but well how she performs this intriguing variety of songs. While her voice certainly does not evoke Streisand (a woman far easier to dislike!), it is smooth, tender and soulful throughout, more than compensating for her limited range.

This was meant not only as a portrait of her life, but as a love letter to her husband and children, and that alone makes it worthwhile. Take advantage of these bargain prices and give it a chance.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful album from a wonderful singer.......2004-09-27

Kathie is a complete unknown in Britain. I only came across her music when I learned that Dolly Parton contributed backing vocals to one of the songs on this album. I knew that Dolly would only have done this if Kathie were a good singer - and I was right although this was not the first of Kathie's albums that I bought. I actually started with Sentimental and the Christmas album, both albums filled with covers of classic songs, mainly romantic ballads. I loved them both so I immediately bought this album, which also contains several covers but contains some original material too. While this is not quite as exciting as those other two albums, it is still an album of a very high quality.

Kathie's voice has a tender, dreamy quality ideally suited to the romantic ballads that dominate this album, just as they dominated the other two albums that I mentioned. Kathie is less suited to dramatic up-tempo songs like Don't rain on my parade, but some of you will appreciate its inclusion as it provides a change of tempo.

The covers include Circle game (Joni Mitchell), It goes like it goes (from Norma Rae), Moondance (Van Morrison), Here's that rainy day (from the songbook of Jimmy Van Huesen), Before the parade passes by (from Hello Dolly), Don't rain on my parade (from Funny girl), I got lost in his arms (from Annie get your gun), On my way to you (co-written by Alan and Marilyn Bergman with Michel LeGrand), Sunrise sunset (from Fiddler on the roof) and Try to remember (from The Fantastiks). Some of the other songs are originals but it may be that some are covers. Note that Sweet dreams is NOT a cover of the song made famous by Patsy Cline although I'm sure that Kathie could sing that song superbly.

The album is built around the concept of Kathie's life story. In that respect, it falls short - it sounds to me like a series of songs that relate to particular events in Kathie's life but no more than that. I don't mind that as Kathie is among my favorite singers and doesn't need to worry about clever concepts. The album includes a 24 page booklet containing full lyrics and plenty of family photographs.

It is always hard for me to pick out highlights from an album so full of quality but here I'll nominate Born for you (which opens and closes the album), Circle game, Sweet dreams, Moondancing (with Collin Raye on backing vocals) and Only my pillow knows (with Dolly Parton on backing vocals).

If you are new to Kathie's music, I'd recommend starting with Sentimental or the Christmas album both of which I reviewed a long time ago - or the more recent gospel album, which I've yet to hear. If you enjoy those, you'll enjoy this too.

5 out of 5 stars Born for You.......2004-07-03

I was lucky enough to find this CD at Big Lots! I bought it because I like Kathie Lee - I didn't even know that she could sing. I LOVE THE CD. -- every song except the Parade one! But every other song I LOVE! Her voice is wonderful and the selection of songs is great. I plan on buying one for a friend.
The arrangements are beautiful. I am so happy that I found it!
Thanks to Kathie Lee!!
Love, Marilyn Ryan

4 out of 5 stars Pleasant Surprise.......2002-04-26

Ok so its Kathie Lee, but this cd is not as bad as you think. BORN FOR YOU is a collection of adult contemporary standards as well as some new songs. Yes its Kathie Lee but just listen to the music. She does have a nice voice, I don't think she would be singing this material if she couldn't handle it. While I think this is a nice cd, her pop effort HEART OF A WOMAN was slightly disapointing, as a understatement, but this has Gifford in control of her vocals and singing songs she actually sounds good singing.

BORN FOR YOU is filled with love songs which will take you back to the time they were popular, some will make you smile, make you laugh, make you cry or just think, but its a good collection for the most part. The one misstep I believe was "Before the Parade Passes by/Don't Rain on My Parade", this one is not very well suited for her voice. Some highlights though include the touching title track, "Help Is On The Way", "Only My Pillow Knows" (with Dolly Parton), "It Goes Like It Goes/Sweet Dreams", "First Time/Not Exactly Paris". Its a pleasant cd to listen to to relax to and just enjoy.
