Sacred Spirit: Chants and Dances of the Native Americans is an 11-song journey bridging the gap between ancient and contemporary history, tradition and modern instrumentation. While it is impossible to fully realize such scope on a single disc, Sacred Spirit makes the choice to represent all indigenous Americans rather than become mired in the potentially divisive bog of politics and tribal allegiance. All but two melodies are entirely traditional, bringing together flute, drums, and vocals with a cello and keyboard wash. This marriage is most effective on the lovely bowing of "The Cradlesong," and the looping electro-acoustic beauty of "Wishes of Happiness & Prosperity." Elsewhere, synthetic elements are overwhelming, detracting from a song's essence, as with the spongy nervosity of "Elevation." An uneven offering, Sacred Spirit doesn't quite live up to its promise. There are a few tracks that are really great on this CD. I expected more Native America chanting/singing and less electronic music. That being said, I really like the CD. It does strike a spiritual chord during some of the tracks. There are reviews here that look like they belong in a magazine. I will just say that if you like World Music or New Age music (and they ARE different), I suspect this is a very worthwhile CD to add to your collection.

THE best CD i've bought in a long long time!!!!.......2007-04-09

I was watching one of Youtube's clip of the Grand Canyon's Skywalk that opened up last year on an Indian reservation. The clip has this most beautiful trance-like mellow groove song on it and i HAD to find out what or who it was by. Thanks to the helpful people who posted a reply, i was able to find and obtain this CD. The song on that Youtube clip was called [ Ly-O-Lay Ale Loya (Circle Dance)]. As the title of this comment says, it IS the best CD i've bought in a VERY a long time. In fact i'm listening to it now as i'm writing this.
The combination of Trance, Newage, Lounge and tranquil music is enough to take you away. I wanna say it's like a combination of Deep Forest meets Jam and Spoon meets Enigma. I just can't put it into better words than the other people who has posted the same comments about this CD. I HIGHLY recommend buying this and enjoying it! I just can't seem to get tire of it!

Soothing Native Music.......2007-03-30

I am a fan of infusion between tribal beat and modern music. This collection is wonderful infusion between tribal beat and enchanting vocal blended with modern instrumental sound. If you like Deep Forest you will definitely love this. It is not like Enigma or Magna Canta but it has it's own charm. I am going to buy all Sacred Spirit volumes after hearing this.

This collection of solo flute pieces from Navajo-Ute musician R. Carlos Nakai is an evocative delight. The album consists of mostly original material, from the composition "Canyon Reverie," to the improvisational "In Media Res," to "Athabascan Song," an arrangement of a traditional song. The latter in particular stands out, with a faster rhythm and more lilting melody than most of the other pieces. There's also "Ancient Dreams," performed on a bone whistle; the instrument almost exceeds the upper range of human hearing, and Nakai occasionally sounds like he's imitating birdcalls. A classically trained musician, Nakai blends musical traditions to create a whole that reminds one, on occasion, of Japanese shakuhachi music. --Genevieve Williams

This is an album I got once after a trip to New Mexico, and obviously every time I hear it I'm transported right back to Santa Fe, on a cool night with the smell of mesquite in the air. I'm no expert, but his native american flute is so wonderful and peaceful, and sounds just as I'd expect and want it to. The music is quite relaxing and great to daydream to, and I'll assume "Earth Spirit" is in many a massage parlor. Highly recommended.

A new type of music for the soul. It's wonderful. It's beautiful. It's exciting. And worth listening to. It's Native American chants and dances
done with some of the most amazing music I've ever heard.

I expected more of this volume since the first one is real extraordinary, and seems to be hard to beat. However is good enough to have it. Good production and most of the tracks are in the same mood of the first volume.

We bought this CD while visiting Arizona last summer. We loved it so much that we have purchased this copy through Amazon for a friend as a Christmas Gift. He loves it too! This is a great combination of spiritual, Native music and chants along with "pop" melodies. I normally play inspirational CD's....lots of Native flute music, and meditation CD's but this one (and also Sacred Spirit Vol. 1) I can play when I have guests over and they do not fall asleep!

This is a very nice CD when I put it in to play my whole house relaxed and clamed down and just listened very nice. The drumming is fantatsic, but if you do not like native american flutes not a CD for you in some parts of the CD the flutes are very loud. But I really enjoy this CD.

I really enjoy both CD's Sacred Spirit Drums and Drum Medicine. I live in an area of very little resource for this type of purchase- I was very happy to find what I wanted online- also very glad to be able to listen before I purchased- would not have bought them without that. Don't miss it!.......2004-04-25

I had never heard of Bill Miller until recently attending several of his performances at a local Indian Market. I kept going back to hear and absorb more, and afterwards, ordered several cd's, including this one. I wonder how and why I could have avoided hearing of him and missing out on his fantastic music for so long. Mr. Miller is a consummate musician and his lyrics and music evoke unimaginable heartfelt emotion and imagery. He is a master of a broad range of genres, keeping his style fresh and unique. His voice, guitar, and flute are instruments of great beauty and power. His music is a treasure. I found nothing long-winded about this cd, in fact, it left me wanting to hear more.

An excellent introduction........2004-04-07

Vanguard took up the difficult task of summarizing Bill Miller's amazing career in 16 songs and did it wonderfully. This is an excellent introduction to the career of this deeply spiritual folk-country-blues-rocking singer/songwriter/guitarist/flutist of Mohican heritage. While a long-winded description of the man and his music, it is very accurate. Whether you're looking for some sort of spiritual enlightenment or just good music, "Spirit Songs" is a must-own.

The music on this CD is the same as the music on "Spirit Winds: Native American Flute with Nature." I checked the copywrite info. On this CD it says copywrite 1998 BCI Music.

I was really suprised at just how beautiful and moving this album is. It is one of those rare recordings that makes a special place in your heart and you know what you've been given is beyond value. Put this in after a long days work, have a small glass of wine and rediscover your peace.

Native Spirit CD, 1999 release.......2003-12-07

I ordered this CD, as illustrated and after carefully checking the sample music, and Amazon.ca sent me the wrong one -- they sent a CD that was released in 2001, has different music on it, and which has different cover art from the one you see here on the page. I have since been in correspondence with Customer Service trying to find out whether I can get the CD I originally requested and which continues to be advertised. I keep getting responses that do not answer my question. I am very frustrated with Amazon.ca.

"NATIVE SPIRIT" SPEAKS to the inner soul.......2002-02-04

The varied artists locked within the plastic cover of this cherished collection of NATIVE AMERICAN TUNES have been done an injustice. For the clarity of notes carried by the flute and string instruments coupled with nature's own sounds NOTHING can surpass the experience gained by the listener. All twelve cuts delivers actuality of location and if meditation is the goal, one can easily be transferred into the scene painted by the music. "NAVAJO PRIDE" draws from the depths of serenity while, "LONE WARRIOR" and "RAIN PRAYER" restores a sense of personal accomplishment. During the "PUEBLO SUNRISE", you should experience, as I did, the lure of the native dancer as he creeps along the river edge taunting the rays of the morning sun. The entire collection is better than any I have heard or have in my possession.

Great price for a GREAT CD........2001-03-29

I spotted this video in a clearance bin and took a chance. I actually bought it to listen to in the car to soothe my baby and get him to sleep during road trips. I've read that Native American music is great for that because the drum reminds them of the sound of the mother's heartbeat. And overall Native American music is much more pleasant and soothing to listen to than stuff you find on the radio usually. Not only did it work on him, but I remained calm during every trip and didn't even come close to giving into any road rage or any of the other frustrations that usually accompany a few hours in the car. I highly recommend this CD, and you can't beat the price.

I had heard this CD when I was at the Canyon last summer. Wanted one and forgot to buy it before coming back to GA. Amazon to the rescue again! This is a fantastic CD and a wonderful tribute to the Canyon and our Native American Heritage.

Great Accompaniment to Massage Therapy.......2004-06-27

I'm a massage therapist, and this is one of my favorite CD's to use in the office. Another reviewer called this "dance-trance" music. That's because it's both rhythmic and relaxing. Nature sounds, flutes, drums, guitar, keyboard, strings & vocal chants combine to create a musical portrait of the Grand Canyon. This is faster-paced than most massage music, but a perfect accompaniment nonetheless.

I indulge heavily in this type of music for various reasons.
One among those reasons being that I seek music to accompany my weaving of rugs using the traditional Navajo method.
Good music helps me to "go places" and assists in my creativity.
So I have a large collection of this type of music.
This cd is in the top 5.
Every song on this CD builds beautiful epic journeys in my heart and soul, that include soaring through canyons, flying with wind, dancing on waters, resting on red sands, facing the sun, and sharing with the Old Ones who's spirits sing in our canyons.

Better than I expected and I expected it to be fabulous ..........2001-12-15

I just recieved this in the mail this morning and I am more than pleased. The music has the distinctive Arkenstone sound, but goes beyond any of his previous efforts in many ways (imo). As stated by previous reviewers, the natural sounds actually sound real, the vocals are excellent, the music is profound.

The Grand Canyon/N. Arizona Plateau are my favorite places on earth, and this music is definitely evocative of those places. The sound clips do not do this CD justice. Buy it. I can't imagine anyone who would be dissapointed with it.

The twelve tracks flow into one another silkenly, and none are really adequately shown in the 30 second samples. The crisp guitar, bluesy harmonica, soulful but spare vocals, tidal synthesizer, crisp rhythm, surprising flute, and really lovely melody are just some of the layers in this virtuoso recording. Sacred Spirit confirmed this CD is part of the Sacred spirit collection with their album Bluesy Chill Out and Jazzy Chill Out, where they include in the list the albums Sacred Spirit 1, Sacred Spirit 2, Bluesy, Jazzy, Classical Spirit, Morocan Spirit and Spirit of Silence. This album is wonderful. More in the felling of the Indigo Spirit album (name of this album in USA) can be found in Bluesy and Jazzy albums. I love Sacred Spirit

Excellent Blues Derivative.......2001-12-05

As a blues fan, I immensely enjoyed Sacred Spirit 1. This album has sounds with classical roots that have similarities to the original but which head in other directions and still excite. The album's incorporation of traditional blues singers, particularly John Lee Hooker, are memorable. This album extends the blues in directions not previously anticipated. Not to be missed.

Pure Ear Candy.......2001-08-08

The genre of this CD is quite hard to pinpoint. It's blues, it's classical, and at the same time, new-agey. The beauty of this is that all these genres culminate in what can be described as pure ear candy. Stand out tracks include "Slow and Easy", a remix of an old John Lee Hooker classic. The remix surprisingly does JLH's deep, sorrowful voice justice, which is accented by blues guitar and cello. JLH also lends his vocals to the following track, "Sonnet XVIII", which concludes the blues journey Sacred Spirit have created. It is interesting to hear the classical music interwoven through each track, as apparently these musicians are playing entirely from the heart, blending so gracefully with the blues instruments and vocals. "Lay Down" is another fine example of how well blues and classical music mesh together. Sacred Spirit: Culture Clash is for all music fans who are open to new and old sounds, and for those that appreciate the Blues played in a different style.

OK, get your Sacred Spirits Straight.......2001-02-17

As far as I can tell there are now "three" Sacred Spirit CDs. There is the original Native American/ambient CD which first came out in Virgin. That was followed by Sacred Spirit 2 (this CD--which I have seen in the US with ANOTHER title), also on Virgin. Now there is a "new" Sacred Spirit II (not to be confused with 2), whcih is also Native American music, but on the Higher Octave label. OK. Here's the skinny: Sacred Spirit 1 is excellent. It is great to listen to from one end to another and has a wonderful spiritual feel. Sacred Spirit 2 (not II) is a mix of African-American spirituals with overdubs of beats and vocals (such as a speech by the Reverend Martin Luther King, jr), with accompaniment by a cello (can that explain the cover picture?). Overall it is also a quiet, introspective musical delight for the mind. Sacred Spirit II is not as good as the other two. It is also Native American, but cannot compare to the original at all.

So there you have it. I highly recommend Sacred Spirit 1, it is a classic. I also like Sacred Spirit 2, although it is completely different. Sacred Spirit II is not worth it.

Better than Sacred Spirit #1.......2000-02-24

This CD is definately better than the original scared spirit. Do buy this and you will remember me.

Jazzy and Quirky.......2007-06-27

One might expect this album to be mostly jazz with a dreamy, floaty feel to it. It certainly has that. But there are some unexpected curves in many of the tracks that are meant to draw us back out of dreamland into a more funky reality. The best cuts are those that stick closest to the jazz-chillout feel you'd expect from this album.

This CD is a real slow and smooth piece in some spots and in other it is very upbeat and uplifting. I bought bluesy chill out first and liked it so much that I bought this one too. They are both worth the money and I highly recommend them.

The very first Enigma cd was a great new age jazz experience that I latched on to. My initial mood feel with this cd was the same. It holds a mixture of many sounds, even a little J.J. Cale blues sound. Great with a glass of red wine! Bet you can't play it just once.

Simple, beautiful, elegant.......2006-10-17

I have a slew of "chill out" records in my collection and this is by far one of the best, comparing to a couple of my favorites in the Cafe Del Mar series. The vibe is infectious, slow and grooving. I don't know anything about the label or the artist, but this record is a beautiful ride.

the cd is amazing its hip and what modern in the jazz genre. the intro of the cd is very well put the rest of the tracks are amzing also like the song "Chillin" is my favorite. I was looking for a jazzy kind of cd you could chill out with and I found it and it was this cd so I am going to have to buy it! all you people that like modern jazz not that frank sintra jazz then you should get this cd!
