With over 15 acclaimed films to his credit, actor Jared Leto knew he had a challenge in creating a legitimate musical group, and the fact that a great many gifted thespians have pumped out some pretty awful albums hasn't slowed him at all. "Any time you have a precedent that's negative like that, you're gonna have an uphill battle," he agrees. "I've never shied away from that." Yet 30 Seconds To Mars' self-titled 2002 debut easily established the group as a fresh, new force, revealing a multi-faceted outfit that thrived on creative exploration and escape.Three years later, their follow-up, A Beautiful Lie, catapulted the group to even greater success. Where the debut's line-up featured Jared on all guitar, bass, synth and vocals with brother Shannon on drums, a full collaboration developed with A Beautiful Lie, including guitarist Tomo Milicevic and bassist Matt Wachter. "The last thing we wanted to do was make the same record twice," Leto explains. Hundreds of tour dates and a 1996 MTV Nomination for "Best Video" later, 30 Seconds To Mars are proving their stability and still challenging their position. "We're interested in being as modern as we can," Leto concludes. "We're striving to do something different, to look forward rather than back, to be free from the shadows of our inspiration, and to continue, with our voice to make our mark."

great album.......2007-07-28
The Best Ever.......2007-07-13
Great songs, Great sound, Great Band. .......2007-05-31
Every song has a different sound to it, which makes the CD even better because you really can't put a certain theme on it--I like that.
I especially like 'The Kill', 'A beautiful lie', 'Attack' and 'From Yesterday', but that is not to say that I dislike any of the other songs: each one is fantastic in its own right.
Appart from Panic! At the Disco's Debut Album, "A Beautiful Lie" is my favorite CD of 2005.
With this album, 30 Seconds to Mars has won itself a good position in my highly-coveted (at least I think so) list of favorite bands.
Anyone who wishes to spend some money on some quality rock-punk-emo music, should definitely look no further.
Protected CD - DO NOT BUY.......2007-05-23
Like most people I usually rip my CD's to MP3s and do the majority of listening either at my computer or on the go with my MP3 player. This isn't even a remote possibility. Do not support companies and bands that restrict consumer's rights!
This is a Virgin Records CD.
Different from their first album; energetic rock with some pretensions.......2007-05-22
- Interesting song topics - far from the standard concerns of pop/rock. Leto is interested in internal battles, progress of life (fitting for an actor, I guess)
- More variety between and within songs (tempo, topics) than the first album
- Some catchy hook songs like From Yesterday and Attack
- Less noise and more music
The bad
- Verges on pretentious at times
- There's still no guitarist capable of a good lead to sustain the songs - sometimes songs just feel incomplete
- Jared's vocals are still somewhat marginal, not really skilled, rather just enthusiastic
- Doesn't have quite the intensity of the first album
Somehow I found this a bit forgettable - there was nothing I disliked, and some good songs, but I only listened to it a couple of times.
Incidentally - I really like the "addon" track Hunter as it is quite different from the rest - more mellow, quietly intense - and Leto doesnt do any screaming in it ;) Battle of One is also OK.

Released in the glow of Wings' biggest and best album, Band on the Run, Venus & Mars found Paul McCartney in his element--a working rock star, being screamed at again, cheerfully riding the last rays of his youth. Adulation always brought the best out of him, and Venus & Mars is nearly the equal of its more lauded predecessor. McCartney never strays from his favorite themes (sex, drugs, rock & roll, and marriage), but his confidence is high as he mixes gorgeous, airy production numbers like "Listen to What the Man Said" and "Letting Go" with the ribald and hilarious. "Rock Show" matches the Who's "Long Live Rock" as the finest and funniest of those self-celebratory '70s stomps. McCartney's effortless marshalling of melody and arrangement hoists the blander material out of trouble, and the best stuff's powered by genuine, rediscovered verve. Facile and frivolous, but not at all bad. And their version of the "Crossroads" theme is wicked. --Taylor ParkesAlbum Description

An amazing and unexpected treasure.......2007-03-22
We are fairly fickle about our CD collection and the quality the bands must maintain. Having said that, some bands are not purchases out-of-the-gate, or on release day. For a few, like this 30 Seconds to Mars CD, they have to glean our interest from radio and video releases first.
And wow, have they done that. Once FROM YESTERDAY came out, we knew we had to own the CD. But it was soon apparent that was only the beginning. If you are worried that the constant yelling vocals of Jared Leto may indicate an album that is "less than," DON'T BE! From start to finish this CD has no deletable tracks - a feature that gets quite a bit of use in our household (we can clear CD tracks from the player that we do not want it to play).
Don't waver any more if you are questioning the addition of this CD to your collection. The radio and video hits are only a hint of what is being offered, and we look forward to the next 30 Seconds to Mars release.
I cannot really equate them to any other band, which is the most difficult part of assessing the quality of the 30 Seconds tracks. That alone should be an indicator of why this CD is a must-own.

Chronicling The Replacements' gloriously tempestuous decade on a single disc ostensibly seems akin to reading Cliff's Notes for the New Testament: No sooner do you grow fond of the protagonist than they've nailed him up. And if that comparison sounds a tad sacrilegious, perhaps you underestimate the Mats' hallowed place in modern rock history--and the hearts of their ardent fans. Yet somehow even this condensed format focuses the songs of Paul Westerberg and playing of bandmates Bob and Tommy Stinson and drummer Chris Mars into a dramatic arc that can't be denied. The initial tracks of this 20-track collection display a band joyously besotted by nascent punk thrash, yet one not so different from the scores of similar bands tearing up local clubs in the '80s.But by the time of Hootenanny's "Color Me Impressed" and "Within Your Reach," something magical was clearly happening within Westerberg's songwriting and the band at large, even if it was largely inspired by terminal boredom, perpetual discontent, no small amount of alcohol--and an indifference to success that was one of their greatest charms. Within two years they'd produce one of the decade's--and perhaps rock history's--most compelling albums with Let It Be and the indie movement's first grassroots anthem in "Unsatisfied." They followed it up with Tim, a collection where Westerberg seemed able to conjure similar generational marching orders ("Here Comes a Regular," "Bastards of Young," "Left of the Dial") with preternatural ease; enraptured rock critics probably thought harder about his music than he ever did. Though highlighted by such gems as "Alex Chilton," "Skyway" and such pop-smart swan songs as "I'll Be You" and "Merry Go Round," the Mats' third act dissolved into the expected, if equally star-crossed solo career for Westerberg and the tragic death of Bob Stinson, events which can't help but cast a melancholy shadow over the unexpectedly gritty new old stock recordings "Message to the Boys" and "Pool & Dive." --Jerry McCulley
Album Description
The ragged and glorious alt-rock of The Replacements made them one of the greatest and most iconic American bands of the 1980s, and inspired countless groups to come. Fronted by lead singer, pianist/guitarist, and principal songwriter Paul Westerberg, these heroes of post-punk/pre-grunge rock `n' roll fused garage band greatness with powerful pop beauty. Fueled by both thrashing energy and a lyrical and emotive sonic flow, The Replacements' kamikaze live shows and richly textured albums made them music legends.Customer Reviews:
Love from Minneapolis.......2007-03-25
Not to bleat too much, but how does Rhino justify the omission of Androgynous and Swingin' Party, which, in all of their weird, surreal, organic, raw, sloppy beauty, epitomized the immediacy that helped make Let It Be and Tim the greatest back-to-back albums by any artist in the 1980s? These songs only get better with repeated listening, unlike the Mats' pre-Let It Be punk efforts that sound like the kind of speed metal that gives skateboarding fanboys hard-ons but grows increasingly tiresome with age.
It is funny to me that as their music matured and became more melodic and interesting, many of these same fanboys accused the Mats of selling out. That instinct to keep bands stuck in perpetual adolescence always drags down great music, but thankfully, Westerberg and Co. resisted, although at the unfortunate loss of a bandmate.
Despite missing some vital tunes, I still give this album five stars for Rhino's good sense to include Answering Machine and Here Comes a Regular, and because it is still the Replacements, who even at their worst could puke out better music than the soulless, high-polish, overproduced dreck that wins Grammy awards. If there is any justice, the Mats will be fast-tracked into the RnR Hall, thus affording them the opportunity to give the middle finger to industry tastemakers who overlooked them in their prime.
What, yet another Mats compilation album?.......2007-01-16
A Great Best-of.......2007-01-11
So if you're wondering what all the fuss is about, pick up this disc. I owned Hootenanny for a while back in the day, but foolishly let it slip out of my hands. So when I saw this disc, I had to get it. You can't understand alternative rock without the Replacements, REM, Joy Division, and Mission of Burma.
Do yourself a favor and get this, you won't regret it.
One Historic CD.......2006-12-19
The best way to listen to this is on a long, autumn drive on backroads, with the windows down and the volume loud. If you still have one of those archaic tape recorders, record a compilation tape and throw in some greats from this album. It only gets better with age.
And to address my own review title, I wish this had been two CDs. Or three.
Great one disc Best of, Excellent with 2 new songs, but so short........2006-12-05

With a slate of more than 200 shows a year, Ben Harper has never been an album-tour-album-tour kind of artist; for him and his fans, the stage is the ultimate proving ground. So after four studio albums, Harper has finally released his first official live set, a 25-song double-disc collection that surveys each of his four albums and adds a couple of well-executed, if not terribly inventive, covers. Disc one is electric and finds Harper and the Innocent Criminals tearing through their patented mix of rock, folk, soul, and blues. Yet, the solo-acoustic disc two is the true prize, putting the spotlight squarely on Harper's incredibly agile, versatile, and enormously moving voice. In this pared-down setting, Harper shows an uncanny ability to connect with his audience, offering one spellbinding performance after another. Culled from two years' worth of shows--no two songs are taken from the same concert--Live from Mars provides a welcome overview of Harper's many facets. --Marc GreilsamerAmazon.com

To dig his music, you must bleed.......2006-07-22
"Like a King" is one of the most harrowing songs, it goes back to the roots, an old gospel in form with a new story of another black man slipping into the cracks of this system. Originally written by Maya Angelou ("Still I Rise"), Harper added his own words, politicizing the song furthermore by introducing the name of King. "You may write me down in history / With your bitter, twisted lies, / You may trod me in the very dirt / But still, like dust, I'll rise." The gospel is dedicated to Martin L. King and Rodney King, both victims of white American terrorism. "You may shoot me with your words, / You may cut me with your eyes, / You may kill me with your hatefulness, / But still, like air, I'll rise." The soul of this song is old and new at the same time. It's meaningful in many ways, and the broken down chords are slow and grave. I weep each time I listen to "Like a King," and I bleed with Harper, because that's the only way to dig his music.

If one needed further proof of the contemporary revival/reassessment of the ambitiously overwrought sensibilities once so reviled in '70s rock, this aggressively mindbending second album by the Mars Volta offers it up in spades. Band mainstays Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and Cedric Bixler-Zavala insist that labels like "prog" don't interest them, and that this is emphatically not a "sequel" to 2003's De-Loused in the Comatorium. What it is was thematically inspired by a stranger's diary allegedly found by late bandmate Jeremy Ward, the basis for an expansive, often amorphous musical head-trip that brews psychedelia, trance, hard-rock and free-jazz into a daunting new whole. The dozen tracks here represent but five "songs" proper, though the band's disdain for conventional track banding inspire it to sound more like a stream-of-consciousness soundscape from Can--or a dark, lyrically inventive, if decidedly troubled corner of their ids. On the "Umbilical Syllables" portion of "Cygnus.." and "The Widow" Bixler-Zavala invokes the wailing, Led Zeppelin II & III spirit of Robert Plant set against a feverish, swirling melange that's anything but the blues. The vocalist coaxes "L' Via l'Viaquez" en Espanol, while his band indulges its space-mambo conceits with an evocative spirit that recalls Latin Playboys at their most mischievous. It's an album that loops back on itself in a haunting ellipse--and one whose boundless ambition makes Pink Floyd sound like three-chord bar punters by comparison. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:
TMV.......2007-07-05
Before you base your judgment of this CD soley in comparison to any of The Mars Volta albums you need to realize that it isn't a Mars Volta album. It is a Soundtrack for a film and Omar is even quoted by saying it is a reaction to the film. If you're a die-hard Omar fan then you'll love it. Rapid Fire Toll Booth is now one of my all time favorites and all the other songs sound great in my opinion.
I don't usually write reviews because it's so painful for me to read someone elses review especialy ones that contain the following examples. I only like their older stuff, they keep changing their style, the guitar player is too self induldgent, they should use the same producer as on their first album, there's too much ambience, there's too much guitar noodling, they've become snobs, they're not as good without the old drummer, they're progressive, they're experimental, they took a riff from some other band, I like them less with each album they put out, etc. That was in reference to all bands not just The Mars Volta.
That kinda review irritates me because it's a bunch of garbage. I wish those kinda people would just stick to their MTV lifestyles and leave the real music to those who are true fans and are more open minded. I don't know why it bugs me so much it's not like I'm defending them because I know them on some personal level it's just that some people just don't get it. I'm tired of everyone disecting the music and the musicians. All they want to do is entertain us, not create some sort of musical doctorine that should be discussed as though one was attending a seminar. As a musician I understand the need to experiment and branch out so the music making process doesn't become stale. Do you really want your favorite band to constantly repeat themselves and never evolve. People please I beg of you quit writing these cliche pointless reviews. As for me I'm through writting about this subject for as long as I live. Omar & Cedric have been making music for quite some time now. Let's allow the professionals to do their thing and the rest of you can either tune in or tune out.

Put together Miles Davis' "Bitches Brew", Led Zeppelin's "II" and "III", and King Crimson's "In The Court of King Crimson", and you get "Frances The Mute". My favorite Mars Volta album so far, but all of them are amazing. Could be very very strange for listeners who never listened to this kind of music. To me, this album resembles "Bitchs Brew" alot (not just in the music itself, but the way it was received by the public - you either hate it or love it).

On De-loused in the Comatorium, the Mars Volta approach rock & roll like it's an ascetic discipline, a calling that comes with lyric sheets as dense and impenetrable as the Kabbalah and a ritual of worship that's dervish-like in its intensity. Formed by vocalist Cedric Bixler and guitarist Omar Rodriguez after the split of their former band--Texan hardcore legends At the Drive-In, who splintered acrimoniously in 2001--the Volta are an unashamedly progressive outfit, dealing in grandiose arrangements that come on like Led Zeppelin fired through Saturn's rings. You can still hear many of ATDI's hallmarks inside the spasmodic dynamics of "Take the Veil Cerpin Taxt" and "Eriatarka"--it's just now they're immeasurably more complex, governed by time signatures responsible only to some alien logic, and cast out on ever more remote waves of mind-bending conceptual fantasy.
Bixler's serrated howl has mellowed somewhat, veering here from tender croon to shrill falsetto. And interestingly, Flea guests here, although you wouldn't know it: his brooding basslines bear nothing of the slap-happy funk he displays in the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. But ironically, the most startling contribution comes from the band's late sound manipulator Jeremy Ward, who passed away after a heroin overdose on the eve of this album's release. His dubby ambient fills unfurl in the valleys between each jagged instrumental peak, lending a truly otherworldly feel to proceedings. A morbid legacy, but thankfully, far from this album's only selling point: De-loused in the Comatorium is the rare prog-rock landmark that prizes punk passion over meandering pretension. -- Louis Pattison

"Exoskeletal junction at the railroad delayed.".......2007-07-03
"Son et Lumiere" is an atmospheric intro that segues nicely into "Inertiatic ESP", the only song I've really heard before. It's fast-paced and shows the epitome of what the high-pitched vocalist can do for a song. There's a chaotic sound that permeates most of the songs, and makes it seem more urgent and maybe better than its true, objective quality. "Drunkship of Lanterns" shows off their more latin-influenced side which is just as interesting as the more progressive stuff. "Eria Tarka" has one of the more infectious vocal parts. "Cicatriz ESP" is the longest track and is the biggest hint of what's to come with the band, having an extensive section of jamming and ambience before coming back to finish the song. Flea's strong baseline pulls it forward to the explosive chorus. It's interesting how each song is sufficiently unique to be memorable while still always sharing the same interesting vision of what good rock sounds like. Of the eight real songs on the record, "Televators" is the least instantly entertaining, but is still a solid, slower song. "Take the Veil Cerpin Taxt" ends the album in one of the best ways I've ever heard, with an intense climax of starting and stopping guitars backing passionate vocals. It really makes you feel like you just finished listening to something great. It's a bit hard to define, but I think anyone with an inclination towards any of the aspects could like it.
Mind Blowing experience.......2007-04-16
This may sound like entering into a sacrilegious experience, but if you are ready take the plunge and listen to this amazing album.

Album Description
Following the Dead's early Warner Bros. LP's and their evolution from a San Francisco hippie phenomenon to one of the biggest bands on the planet, these five album masterpieces chronicle the creatively expansive portion of their long, strange, and amazing trip beginning in 1873 when they launchd their own label. Looking for the secret .. searching for the sound.......2006-05-12
This is an album as the liner notes mention was executed in a time when the Dead were going through slight changes and also about to encounter a big one, which was their hiatus in ' 75.
I ll leave you to purchase this great digi pack cd to tune in to what Joel Selvin tells us in about a 3 or 4 page liner note, detailing the making of this album, and all the other variables that were going on at the time.
It s been 32 years since this album was released; and its as current as any quality timeless recording from that great decade ( 70 s ). I wonder if Phil would ve produced more music; or if ' Pride ' and UBC were his only offerings until Terrapin St ( Passengers ) These two songs weave around US Blues, Ship of Fools. Loose L. Scarlet B. In other words, a plethora of ear candy. I even dig Weir s Money money quite a bit. But after learning of the band s history that year ( astronomical figures in spending ), i can see why it was played only 3 times. And one of those versions is here. The one from a show just before Portland ( to give you a clue ).
I lived in the US for about 16 years. I m 31. So there s a sensitivity to what goes on up there. I live in Chile; country that saw me born on 24.4 75
This is one of the sweetest albums that you could listen to at any given time. Be it in some far away setting, or in the comfort of your living room w / your excellent stereo s.
If I were to compare this album to any other in the Dead s 30 year active career; it d be difficult. I like everything the band put out. Enjoyed every show i saw ( 6 total ). And my personal criticisms to this band come in at times when I think any human would do; as it is the most normal thing to criticize ( approve / disaprove ) everything we have in front of us, be it a book, person or in this case album
Once in awhile you get shown the light in the strangest of places..........2006-05-04
This album feels to me like the FAMILY ALBUM, a milestone recording documenting the huge build-up to that point (with the GD, we all began hovering around the warm and sparkling fire they created and became family at some point, at least it feels that way to me). Look how Phil Lesh breaks out on here - Unbroken Chain (one of the best) and Pride of Cucamonga (no, that's not Jerry playing the pedal steel, but John Mcphee) are big classics for me. The extended, multi-part Garcia guitar lead on Chain, combined with the trippy warbling synthesizer (played by Ned Lagin) is a high point for sure and has always made my hairs stand on end. Both songs have unreleased demo versions on here showing the bare bones guitar framework ... interesting for players, even with the "practice" singing.
Can any DEAD fan deny that Scarlett Begonias ROCKS! Now that is a sweet song ... Garcia weaves the most beautiful melodies (the guitar lead is a beauty) and Weir shows-off with his empathic chord work (they sling the energy all over and pull it all back without blinking), the rhythm section is tight as can be. For all of the doubters out there who always say The Dead were too loosey goosey and didn't ever tighten the screws, the 9:09 min live extra is another example that they were ON during this era, as tuned in to eachother as any band around, and it shows - great stuff!
Is it just me, or is China Doll not one of the most pretty little ditties on any DEAD album (and lyrically cool - a Hunter/Garcia creation), with its harmonies, chimes and clavichord? Nice touch of whimsey, I don't get it why some don't like it.
I've heard it said that Weir's Money Money is the worst song on here ... I don't know, it is a little awkward in parts, but it is FUNNY and Jerry plays some nice licks. The live extra is interesting, but not a highlight. It's odd that Weir didn't add more writing on here, but he does contribute nicely in other songs (some live versions pull him out a little more). The other song that gets unfairly lambasted is Loose Lucy. Another funny one, about "relationships" with women: "singin' yeah, yeah, yeah", ... they're just having FUN, don't be insulted! The extra studio outtake might be even better than the original with its slower, funkier approach. I've always liked it, very catchy.
To tie it all up, the mellow but cutting Ship of Fools - with organs blazin' and Phil laying anchor with his bouncy playing, Jerry sprinkling one of the sweetest leads and singing with his best wharf rat persona - doesn't drift away too far, but isn't left there to float either, great song and one of my favorites!
If your feeling those U.S. Blues, just start with that DEAD anthem (wave that flag), pick up your China Doll, wander your way through the Begonias and you will know why this IS THE PRIDE of Cucamonga. This is a FUN ALBUM, LET IT ROCK (an odd little Chuck Berry jam - an extra on here)! THANK YOU ... for a real good time (Loose Lucy).
