Sometimes you hear some Japanese music and records and you think wait a minute we have enough music in the English-speaking world. On the other hand there are people who are all about the global village and have to make a small room for Japan. It's no real matter that no Japanese record ever sold a million in the USA. Plus Yoko Ono made most of us hate Japan for many years. Whatever your stance, Japanese music is always going to be exotic, independent and underground for most of us. Some will take off their shoes inside the house and eat sushi to be closer to the J-vibe. For anyone who has heard about the Fuji Rock Festival, you know that Japanese music is varied. Some is electronic, some influenced by Britpop, and more of it just rocks hard. That is what we have here on Japan For Sale Volume 3. The Polysics bring their new wave power pop to the table. They are probably the best new Japanese group since Thee Michele Gun Elephant. DJ Krush is known in dance culture and clubs. Guitar Vader are the most exciting new garage band in years. Some of the other groups are more like jazz and j-pop and sort of blend in and fail to make a strong impression. For people like us at SF Burning we tend to like it all.

1 out of 5 stars MAJOR DISAPPOINTMENT!!.......2006-11-07

I bought this CD during a visit to J-town in San Francisco last year and I was shocked at how un-listenable the CD was, I think I only liked two of the tracks. The mix overall is very uneven, I wouldn't consider this as a fair sampling of available jpop, this is an unfortunate rubbish tip packaged for quick sale to the poor soul looking to explore a rich and fun musical vein.

4 out of 5 stars Good JPOP CD.......2006-11-05

Good Mix of JPOP. READY STEDY GO by L'arc~en~Ceil is a great song, and should be familiar to fans of anime as this is a theme song to Full Metal Alchemist. N.G.S by ASIAN KUNG FU GENERATION is another excellent track.

4 out of 5 stars Great Japanese Music!.......2005-12-03

This CD is great if you are just getting into Japanese music, and have not been exposed to much of it. It spans dance, to rock, to rap and pop music. I was a little disappointed that they included an anime theme song in the list, but L arc en ciel is a very popular band in Japan, so it makes sense to put their latest hit on the CD.

My personal favorites are Orange Range's "Shanghai Honey," Aiha Higurahi's "Baby Beautiful" and Asian Kung Fu Generation's "NGS"

However, I was disappointed by the ACO and Takkyu Ishino songs included on the list, but otherwise, it is a great CD from beginning to end!

4 out of 5 stars J-pop fans NEED this........2004-12-29

The best track hands down is "Ready Steady GO" #9. It has an awesome beat, and is the opening theme to Full Metal Alchemist! The second best would be the 2nd track The Great Amateurhythm. I don't like rap, and it takes some getting used to, but sooner or later you have to laugh at the Japanese rap going on.

4 out of 5 stars A Near Perfection of Craft, Good or Bad?.......2004-11-06

Japan for sale traverses the entire spectrum of popular music genres, from rap to rock, electronica to ballad pop, with an unmistakable Japanese flare. The pop is pure sugar with a cherry on top, the rap is fluid and easy on the ears, even the album's grittiest of rock is refined and catchy. The trade off for this fine craftsmanship is the lack of anything cutting edge.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fresh like sushi!.......2004-01-14

This is one of the best cd purchases I've made in years. While my familiarity with "J-Pop" (or Japanese Pop Music)is based mostly on theme songs I've heard in anime and a couple of cd's by bands like Cibo Matto and Shonen Knife who received support on alternative radio stations in the 90's, I wasn't prepared for the fantastic and eclectic mix of music on JAPAN FOR SALE, VOL. 2. The music samples provided by Amazon were enough to hook me into getting this, but they're only a tease of what you'll get if you pick this up. For someone who is both jaded by and frustrated with US "top 40" radio, this cd is a tasty fresh treat! You won't find any Britneys or Christinas in this mix, nor will you find any Creeds or Matchbox 20s. Instead, you're getting music that is completely original, gorgeous, and at times totally mystifying! While a few Western influences have possibly found their way into the songs on this cd, I hesitate to even compare any of these tracks to anything a mainstream American radio fan might be familiar with, as these comparisons would be superficial, unfair, and take away from the uniqueness on JAPAN FOR SALE, VOL. 2.

My favorite track on this cd by far is DT's "Yume No Nakae (Malted Milk Mix)" - prepare yourself to visit a completely new world when you hear this! A fusion of emotional electronica and a gripping vocal track, this song took my breath away the first time I played it and I've been listening to it relentlessly ever since. Truly special music indeed! "Skirt" by CHARA is also a radical and exciting take on what a rock song can be, and I'm surprised each time I hear it at the confidence conveyed by such a soft, almost childish voice. It's brazen and sweet at the same time. These songs leave you wanting to hear more by the artists who created them!

"Balance" by YOSHINORI SUNAHARA might be what another reviewer referred to as "background music," as this is a very synthesized song with limited, seemingly computerized "vocals." But this is actually an intelligently assembled "chillout" tune that benefits from its sparse and sometimes repetetive beats. MAYU KITAKI, SUPERCAR, and TAKKYU ISHINO contribute wonderful dance tunes, each one unique, that will have you wanting to move your feet and leave you just feeling good all over. Or you can get rockheavy with L'ARC-EN-CIEL, BOOM BOOM SATELLITES, and PUFFY. Even the songs I found less thrilling - specifically AYO's "Shinsei Romanticist" and DJ KRUSH's "Candle Chant" - found ways of tricking me into liking them. Not knowing Japanese or much of what the artists are singing doesn't really affect the enjoyment of the music - in fact, it really lets you feel like you're in a brand new space of your own, discovering something no one even knows about. This cd has has me excited about finding other "J-Pop" music. Definitely a worthwhile purchase!

3 out of 5 stars Disappointed J-Pop fan.......2003-11-24

If you ask any of my friends, I am a complete J-pop fan. So, because of this I bought JAPAN FOR SALE. It was a complete disappointment. Some of the songs are just background music and a lot of the ones in Japanese just repeat a few words. For example, Yunegiwa Last Boy by Supercar. If you are really interested in J-pop try listening to V6 or if you are into J-Rock try Gackt, you won't be disappointed!!!

4 out of 5 stars j-pop fan.......2002-06-05

I was suprised considering I went out on a limb to pick this up. It seemed risky as all sophomore albums are, even as compilaions go. Though the tracks may not seem to blend well at first on the first listen through the tracks that bring back interest hold their ground well. It does have some very "eruo-influenced" sound in it but you'll get over it. If your into j-pop you'll probably recognize the track "skirt" it's definetely got something to it very much a mix of a lot of different things but all good I assure you.

4 out of 5 stars music cut from a different cloth.......2002-05-19

pop in America has recently gone down to the level of pig-fodder, taking talentless females vocals over other people's one-dimensional music. there's no variety. however, overseas in Friendly Japan, the pop scene (refered to as J-Pop) is much different. pop is such a broad term in Japan, much broader than that of the US, it could mean any number of stylings. rock, synth-pop, rap, techno, and downbeat elements are found in the fusion-stylings of J-Pop. This CD is a good view at the currnet J-Pop scene. There's synth-pop sensibilities on "Nakanaide"; electronica on "Iceblink", "Yume No Nakae", and "Yumegiwa Last Boy"; chillout rhythms on "Balance"; fresh rock on "Skirt" and "Atarashii Hibi"; and tracks that fuse multiple genres on "Soliloquy", "New Wave Jacket", and "Shinsei Romanticist". So, in short, there's lots of stuff on thia album. Almost every track has an electronic element to it and may reflect the technology-pervaded Japan. a nice cd, the only really bad track was "Spirit Dreams Inside". check it out if you're looking for new music you've never heard from artists you've never heard of.

4 out of 5 stars Not quite up to the same level as the first one..........2002-04-06

...but still pretty fun all the way through. What has been replaced does hurt the album's full score in the end, though. Unlike the volume 1's opening, which packed the eerie punch of the Boom Boom satellites' "Fogbound", this one starts with a much lighter, much happier "Nakanaide" by Mayu Kitaki, which is still charming and nice in it's own right. The next couple of songs are more like moving techno and DJ pieces, which are done well don't get me wrong, but they don't quite appeal to the nature of J-pop that I was expecting from this album. Then comes DJ Krush, doing "Candle Chant: A Tribue", which is a very boring, uninspired piece of work that has a nice backtrack but could have been so much more, instead of a rather simple, unchanging rap song. His work on Volume 1 is much better. Almost the same for "Balance", by Yoshinori Sunahara, which is another quite slow but moving techno song with some very interesting vocals and with everything together, the song has almost a meditative quality that the vocals suggest. Boom Boom Satellite's "SOLILOQUY" reminds me a lot of Fogbound from volume 1, except that it is much more rock oriented (but it still keeps that creepy feeling of the fist song). The second half of the cd adds more rock to the mix, with L'Arc-en-ciel's pure pop/rock that brings back memories of the first volume, Puffy Amiyumi's piece of work is another pop piece that sounds almost like the Beach Boys and is capable of cheering anyone up, and finally Chara's brilliant song "Skirt" that is almost a different kind of rock itself, very fun stuff indeed. Other noteworthy songs include the songs by Supercar and Polysics (who are pure genious, with catchy hummable lyrics and an insane, almost cartoon quality machine like sound effects, each time I hear them they get better). The album ends on quite a bad note with Aco, with annoying, whiney vocals. Overrall, the album isn't quite as good as the first one (which was mixed to begin with), but it is still fun while it lasts. Give it a try.

5 out of 5 stars Give it time, it does grow on you.......2002-01-23

Well, I'm a sucker for J-pop, and I had to admit that when I had seen the cd for Japan For Sale, I wasn't too sure how it was going to turn out. When I first gave it a listen, I hated it, actually abhored it because it just sounded wrong! But after giving my chance at a couple of the songs, the cd grew on me until, right now, I can't take it out of my cd player! There are still some songs that do get hard to listen to, but those aren't the ones you buy the album for. Now for the noteworthy ones:

Fogbound by the Boom Boom Satellites
A very cool, darkish techno/rock song that only gets a bit long near the end, but overrall very cool

The International Chappie Cheerleading Team
Wow, I had no idea that chappies sing! or cheer more like it this is an awesome dj track that comes from the brilliant Japanese graphic design GROOVISIONS with their unmistakably cute Chappie characters

White Surf Style 5
A very cool, weird sounding rock piece that fades in and fades out, with weird sounding chords and stuff.

Polysics
The craziest, wackiest heavy rock song you have ever heard. No words can describe it.

There are a bunch of other great songs, but these are particularly great ones. check this cd out

4 out of 5 stars Japanese music.......2002-01-04

This album gives you a wide variey of tracks from a variety of Japanese artists. There's techno, hip-hop, pop, and a lot of J-Rock.

Tracks like "Orange Juice" and "White Surf" are nice rock tunes. "Heart" is an example of fine Japanese electro-pop and "Wax On" has a cool techno beat and sounds acid-like. The poignant chorus of "Tragicomic" and the dancehall bizzareness of "Never Gonna Change" add to the eclectic experience of this album. The darkest this album reaches is on "Fogbound" where the Boom Boom Sattelites try their hand at a Nine Inch Nails-esque dark atmospheric rock deal.

The only songs that I actually didn't like would be "Call My Name" and "Asia No Junshin" (PUFFY'S DONE BETTER!)

A nice album. Pick it up if you want to hear what you haven't.

Banged out in a hurry for the 1964 Christmas market, Beatles for Sale sometimes sounds it, loaded with ill-conceived covers and some of John Lennon's most self-loathing lyrics. On the other hand, the people doing the banging-out were the Beatles, whose instincts for what worked musically were so strong that they could basically do no wrong--any record that has "Baby's in Black," "I Don't Want to Spoil the Party" and the delectable "Eight Days a Week" on it is only "minor" in the most relative sense. And, though their voices had been frazzled a bit by constant touring, they revved them up for some joyous shouting, and indulged their fondness for American country in subtle, playful ways. --Douglas Wolk

5 out of 5 stars Great album but in mono.......2007-07-14

I'm assuming that this is the same version of the CD that I have. I love the music but the CD is in mono as are all of the early Beatles CDs until Help! I have the Parlophone LP in Stereo and it's so much better. Hopefully, they'll release this CD again in stereo.

5 out of 5 stars 3 Of My Fav Songs On This Album.......2007-07-13

Words Of Love, I'll Follow The Sun, and Every Little Thing.... beautiful songs I can listen to over and over and over and do do do. There are other songs I love on this album too, but I'd have bought it for just the three I mentioned!

4 out of 5 stars THE BEATLES "COVERS" ALBUM.......2007-05-31

5 out of 5 stars "I nearly died...".......2007-05-18

Beatles for Sale by The Beatles is considered their worst album but I truly enjoyed this clever mix of country influenced, blues rocking disc. Mr. Moonlight is not their best cover but the way John Lennon sings and belts this song sure as hell makes up for it. No Reply is my favorite and best track, even the band Garbage stole a line and the hook from this song. Other songs I cannot get enough of are: I'm A Loser, Baby's In Black, Rock and Roll Music, I'll Follow the Sun, Eight Days A Week, and Every Little Thing. Ringo sounds absoutely adorable on the track, Honey Don't. George gets a chance to shine as well on the closing track, Everybody's Trying to be my Baby. I love the way George attacks this song both vocally and performance wise, and Paul continues to grow with his song writing ablities. Beatles for Sale is defintely an album every new Beatles fan should have. Have a ball with this one!

5 out of 5 stars John owns this album.. perhaps the only Beatle's album where John was truly the star.......2007-04-22

John had the most growth on this album.. (that is of course in my opinion)
Songs like No Reply and I'm a Loser are wonderful. The lyrics are so powerful. Lennon's voice coupled with McCartney's harmonizing is great. Harrison's aggressive guitars on No Reply and Ringo's strong back beat make it a great song. John is really on target here. It's a tribute to John's early days with the Beatles.
