Reveling in the richly textured tapestry of Mediterranean culture, Athens to Andalucia is a welcome addition to Putumayo's Odyssey series, bringing a healthy smorgasbord of music--"the quintessential world traveler"--to the hungry listener. As the liner notes reveal, this compilation, gathering some of the most outstanding sounds from Spain, France, Italy, and Greece barely scratches the surface of what Mediterranean flavor has to offer. Yet the varied and distinct influences of wandering Gypsy, Arab, and Jew all make their presence known along with traditional folk elements of Celtic, Spanish, and Eastern European descent. Particularly bewitching is Barrio Chino's "Saudade," a remarkably exotic synergy of sweet melody, spicy Afro-Cuban drumming, aggressively sensual Gypsy rumba guitar, and wobbly accordion, all of which conjures up images of the dance of the snake charmer and the organ grinder with a barrel full of monkeys tossed in for good measure. --Paige La Grone

An odyssey around the Mediterranean.......2006-06-12
I first listened to this CD in college--and I've been taken ever since. My particularly favorite tracks are the Greek ones.I've always had a soft spot for Greece.
Lo'Jo's song "Duende" (which is missing from recent imprints of this disk for some reason)introduced me to this talented French group. Thanks to this CD,I now have 4 Lo'Jo disks, one of which is a live album(!)
This Putumayo album shows its talent in introducing people to new artists.
Best tracks-
Anemos-they're compared to Enya in the liner notes. They have a wonderfully serene track.
Glykeria-A beautiful Greek love song.
Lo'Jo-A ratatouille of reggae, gypsy, chanson&North African music. They're fabulously hard to define.
Get Over Yourselves, already!.......2006-05-30
D. Kastinovich has lived in Portugal and certainly knows what ocean washes its coastline, the snide comments of an earlier reviewer about Americans being ignorant of geography not withstanding. I urge people to buy this cd. It provides a good, solid range of songs, as do most of Putumayo's compilations. The problem is Putumayo's inability or unwillingness to recognize Portugal, and A Mediterranean Odyssey was as close to Portugal as a review could get in order to show this gaping lapse in Putumayo's output. Sure, this cd is good, that's why Kastinovich gave it four stars, and why I do the same. But Putumayo, while putting out Euro this and Latin that, Afro Portuguese and Brazilian, Celtic and World Lounge, has continued to slight the music of Continental Portuguese, the Azores and Madeira, thus depriving listeners out there who chances are are unfamiliar with this music. Though Putumayo gets tantalizingly close, as with this cd, it still neglects an entire country. This music deserves to be heard. Putumayo offers no explanation for this lapse, stating in phone calls and emails that it has released Portuguese music: the Afro-Portuguese, Brazilian, and Cape Verdean. However, there is a country alongside Spain and it is called Portugal, and its music is beautiful and very distinct. So, Putumayo, do the right thing and introduce the music of Pedro Barroso, Jose Medeiros, Brigada Victor Jara, Jose Afonso, Dulce Pontes, Katia Guerreiro & Cristina Branco and many others to the world.
Americans Need Geogrophy 101.......2006-03-29
Portugal does not share a coast on the Mediterranean. Christ all mighty yankees, quit living up to your stereotype as being morons who are completely ignorant of basic geography.
Portugal is on the Atlantic Coast of the Iberian. It does not have a Mediterranean coastline.
I agree with D. Kastin's three star review...........2005-08-18
This cd is merely an appetizer for those who wish to discover mediterranean world music. Hopefully, this cd will propel you to buy the individual artist's recordings. Don't just stop with this cd! I agree that Cristina Branco's "Fado" style of music is missing here and the music of Portugal should not be overlooked in a world music compilation. I discovered Calic and Madredeus and a host of wonderful world music artists from the site cdroots.com. I would recommend any person desiring to discover world music, to stop by this site. Amazon doesn't carry a lot of the artists that you will find on this site. So, buy this cd to get a taste of the mediterranean, but by all means continue to explore and enjoy the vast array!
What does Putumayo have against Portugal?.......2005-07-28
Good cd. Great songs, great musicians. Putumayo, however, needs to discover Portugal, which, by the way, does share a coast on the Mediterranean, along with Spain, Italy, Greece, and the other countries listed. There are many Portuguese musicians who deserve to be heard world-round: Dulce Pontes, Pedro Barroso, Mariza, Jose Medeiros, Katia Guerreiro, Madredeus, Fausto, Cristina Branco, Luis Represas, Ne Ladeiras.
How about a cd of strictly Portuguese musicians, from Portugal, as opposed to Brazil, or Cape Verde?

George Dalaras- The Very Best.......2007-04-01
The title says it all!!!!! It is my favorite cd from George Dalaras!!! Many good tracks on this... Great live performances too!! You will not be sorry or disappointed in this cd!!!!
Wonderful Sampling of Dalaras Style.......2006-04-03
Fantastic! Soulful! Passionate!
No other word necessary, to decscribe this CD.
"The Very Best of" ... really is!.......2001-05-23
This is one CD I will never get tired of hearing. George Dalaras has a golden voice, a smooth style of singing Greek, the songs are poetic (all translated) and very emotionally appealing. The previous reviewer must have been a guy - women will love this CD! George Dalaras expresses true feelings with sincere passion. From begining to the end - it is great! There is no in between! Erika Borsos (erikab93)
Another "Best of" but perhaps not an essential Dalaras album.......2000-08-07
Every couple of years, Minos Records, which owns all rights to Dalaras songs, comes out with a "Best Of" compilation of George Dalaras. They can get away with this for 2 reasons. Dalaras does A LOT of recording and collaborative work with other artists, both domestic and foreign, and two, Dalaras' discography has grown so enormous that there are thousands of ways to re-package older titles. Unfortunately, save for four or five songs, this ablum is not essential to own. The recent album "A Portrait" does a much better job of showcasing Dalaras's wide musical aptitude and stunning voice, while mixing both live and studio offerings. This is not to say that this is not a good album, it is. Furthermore, the frist 3 tracks, for example, come off a very recent album and collaboration with Serbian composer Goran Bergovic ("Thessaloniki-Yannena..."). However, too many of the other tracks are somewhat plodding ballads that serve better to create moods rather than the more intense emotional experiences that he is so famous for. So if you haven't bought Dalaras ablums recently, go ahead with this one, but my advice is to go with "A Portrait" also available here at Amazon.

George Dalaras has been described as the Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen of Greece, but this hardly does him justice. From his beginnings as a protest singer in the 1960s, he has dominated the Greek pop world, and has been instrumental in keeping the music true to its roots. His own roots are in rembetiko, the "Greek blues" of the port city slums; which he mixes with smirneiko, the eastern sound of Greek immigrants from Turkey, and laiko, the mainstream of Greek pop. His voice has an Arabic suppleness and soul, backed by wailing reeds, strings, and jauntily tinkling bouzoukis. He favors an acoustic sound, but dares to take chances. This anthology, split evenly between studio and live tracks (and including a fine guest spot by Paco de Lucia), is an excellent introduction to his work. --Elijah Wald

George Dalaras- A Portrait.......2007-04-01
I love this cd!!! George Dalaras is such a wonderful musician and artist!! A really great cd to buy to introduce yourself to this great artist!!!
Great compilation! Also check out Steven Delopoulos!.......2003-09-21
This is an excellent compilation of live and studio recorded tracks that showcase the genius of George Dalaras. Any Dalaras fan should not be without it, it's that good! Also check out this great Greek-American singer/songwriter/acoustic guitarist named Steven Delopoulos from New Jersey (www.stevendelopoulos.com). He is a cross between Springsteen, Dylan, Tracy Chapman, Harry Chapin, and Cat Stevens! The talent that this man possesses is unbelievable, and his release titled "Me Died Blue" is a MASTERPIECE!!! This man is Bernie Taupin and Elton John fused into one!!! Buy it now, and thank me later!
Musical Revelations: A Journey for the Soul.......2003-04-08
Modern Greek songs combine the ancient melodies and rhythms of the past with the voice of today, which creates new musical landscapes expressing universal truths. George Dalaras one of Greece's most popular and well known singers promotes the music of Greece with passion and energy like no other singer past or present ... Unlike many European countries, Greece does not adopt the prevailing pop culture of the world ... Greek music endures *because* it is based on the struggles/achievements of her past - it is an unbroken chain of music from ancient times. The universal message and appeal of the music bridges all cultures but the melodies, rhythms, and often the instruments are based on unbroken traditions. Dalaras voice is the main instrument, sincere, passionate, heartfelt, emotional... besides the bouzouki there is the violin, occasional guitar and clarinet, accompanied by orchestration to round out the music. The poetic titles of the songs reveal their contents: Konstandis, the only son; I was chosen; You were a god; Don't read my life; Take gypsy, your hammered billows; Death; The Sky Darkens; You finished me; The tough one; Your many faces; As long as the shutting door echoes; Songs are an illness ... Anyone familiar with George Dalaras will be drawn to the music by the mysterious titles alone, knowing that through his singing the mystery will gradually be revealed . Anyone unfamiliar, should listen and let this Greek musician of the soul enter and enchant you. Erika Borsos (erikab93)
Awesome anthology.......2001-09-06
If you already have a good collection of George Dalaras' recordings, then this may not be the CD for you, unless of course you want to have some of your favorite recordings on the same disk. If I were to burn a CD of my favorite songs, it would sound a great deal like this one. This would be the perfect purchase for someone who would like an introduction to George Dalaras, or Greek music in general. The songs on this CD capture the very heart and soul of the Greek spirit. I've had to buy three copies of this CD because I loan them out and they never come back!
Singing with FEELING!.......2000-12-16
I recently returned from my first trip to Greece. One night we went to a section of Athens called Psiri, where we found a number of restaurants frequented by what appeared to be locals - not a tourist in sight! We went to two different restaurants in Psiri - one for drinks, one for dinner. Both had live music, and within minutes of my hearing such music - for basically the first time - I was totally enamored. The singing was so emotional, so genuine, so passionate!! It almost brought tears to my eyes.
So upon returning home, I was determined to find music like I'd heard. This is one of two CDs I bought, and it is EXACTLY what I was looking for. Hearing it immediately reminds me of my time in Greece. George Dalaras is wonderful.
In many respects, this style of music reminds me of what I hear playing in the background at the local Turkish restaurant, and it also reminds me of the mosque chants I'd heard while in the Middle East. If you consider yourself a passionate person, I think you'll really like this CD. Every song is wonderful. You don't have to understand Greek to understand the FEELINGS being evoked in the songs (just like they say with regards to Italian and opera).

Poli Orea!.......2003-02-21
This is a beautiful recording--Dalaras displays his rare talent in a half-Greek, half-Latin selection of music, conveying all of the passion that both cultures are known for!
Sublime.......2003-01-05
I am neither Latin nor Greek, but this is one of the "desert island" CDs in my collection. I have given it as a gift to three people whom I cherish, one of whom is a professional singer. All love it.
I'm lucky to have a Grecophile friend, or I probably would never have encountered Dalaras. I recommend his "The Very Best Of" collection as well, but "Latin" is soulful, evocative, provocative, and endlessly gorgeous. It's elegant and earthy at the same time...imagine that, and you still will need to hear it!
If I could personally guarantee that you'll love it, I would. Ten stars from me too.
Best latin album out there.......2001-05-20
I first heard parts of this album 10 years ago on TV and didn't even know who Dalaras was. Ever since then I was looking for this album. Now that I got my hands on it I find the songs on this album as amazing as I had found 10 years earlier. Not only is the music beautiful but the voice of Dalaras is just amazing. In a world where new "artists" are a weekly phenomenon, Dalaras's talent as can be witnessed through this album is a reminder that there remains some authentic artists who's presence can still be felt through their music and who's music transcends the recording and provides the listener with true feelings. If you've ever enjoyed latin or mediteranean music and dislike fast-food music then this is for you. I listen to a lot of music and Dalaras and this album in particular rate as #1 on my chart. If it was possible, I would've given it 10 stars.

I just got this cd recently and absolutely love it!!! I love greek music and George Dalaras is my very favorite greek artist!! This cd will not disappoint...It's wonderful!!!
Can't win 'em all..........2002-09-18
I am a huge George Dalaras fan. Seeing the new album, my first thought was "Great!" Then I saw that Sting was on the album and bought it without a second thought. If you are not familiar with Dalaras' music, this album is easy to listen to, but if you're looking for the emotion and power of his earlier albums, you may be disappointed. I was. And, if you already own some of his albums, you'll hear some of the same cuts. Glad to own it, but I find myself listening to his earlier music ("A Portrait," "The Very Best Of," "Unplugged") instead.
Passionate Artistic Achievement.......2002-09-04
George Dalaras sings with sensitivity and passion expressing the Greek soul and capturing truths about life. The roots of the music are from ancient Byzantium despite being played on modern instruments and having current lyrics. The poetic translations in the liner notes express the depth and intense nature of each song. The artistry is unsurpassed. Like a painting in words, his sensuous voice melds with the exotic Greek music appealing to the listener on all levels.
"Running Roads" is another masterpiece, every single track is full of feeling and depth, a full expression of life. This is my fourth Dalaras CD, I have "The Very Best of George Dalaras", "50 Hronia Rembetiko", & "I Megalitgres Epithies": all are equally excellent. This CD demonstrates why George Dalaras CDS have sold over 7 million world-wide. 7 million people can not be wrong, his music touches the soul, no need to understand Greek to appreciate the music, it has universal appeal! Erika Borsos (erikab93)
Dalaras Does it Again.......2001-10-31
As a Greek and music lover I have never gone wrong with Geore Dalaras. Unlike other Greek singers Geogre is always changing. Progressing while never losing his Greek style. I purchase every release and I am sometimes treated to rembetika (a greek style), dimotika (also greek) classical, church music, latin, rock or world music. This CD is one of my favourites of his because it blends all the above into a wonderful collection. If you haven't heard of George you are missing out on a real talent and one of the most moving voices in the world. This CD is a great introduction and one that will gain him fans in the US. Purchase and enjoy his is great!!!
Overproduced.......2001-10-20
George Dalaras has been one of my favorite vocalists for about 14 years now ever since I got my hands on a $25 import CD in 1987 from a Chicago GreekTown Gift Shop. Ever since then, I have actively sought Dalaras CD's from such giftshops all over the world. His voice is remarkable and aptly represents "rembetica" music of his native Greece. To my knowledge, "The Running Roads" is his first splash into the "world music" distribution world being snapped up by Miles Copeland's Mondo Melodia Label. This album is a big disappointment and does not accurately represent the Dalaras sound. Instead, this album awkwardly blends overblown synthysizers, guitars, and drums with the great Dalaras voice and the project comes up empty and superficial. It sounds like a blatent attempt to "update" the Dalaras sound. It doesn't work. There are nice moments on the album such as tracks 1, 3, and 16. This is one of the worst Dalaras albums I own. It's overproduced and overblown like a classic 80's album. Get the his "unplugged" album from a few years back that captures the real Dalaras sound.

You won't find a better introduction to modern Greek music.......2005-01-07
This is an extremely accessible album of excellent songs. Kudos to Tropical Music for translating all of the lyrics and providing a highly informational set of CD liner notes.
Here is the translation to "Voyage to Cythera" (Taxidi sta Kythira)"
A sick heart which finds no remedy...in forgetting,
fades away in the frost, in the north wind,
far away in foreign parts,
waiting always for the moment to return;
The ship will appear in the harbor,
a sea-bird in our dreams.
You've been touched once more by the ice
and the lonliness of the world;
How can you heal the old wound deep in your soul?
Waiting always for the moment to return;
The ship will appear in the harbor,
a sea-bird in our dreams.
Dalaras sets such high standards that, by the measure of nearly every other artist, this would be 5 stars. However, there are even better CDs from him. (His is the talent that comes but once every several generations.)

A World Music Classic.......2005-06-27
The album is a sampler and a tribute to traditional Mediterranean music with an emphasis on Greek, Spanish and Hebrew songs, performed with exrtaordinary mastery by George Dalaras.
The execution of the folk/traditional songs by both, Dalaras' band and the orchestra is seamless.
It is noticeable that the album is dominated by melancholic compositions.
There are very few musicians in the world that can put together an album like this. It would be a blessing if more musicians of Dalaras' caliber spearheaded similar efforts. Our world needs it.
Stunning.......2003-11-07
Essential Dalaras, superlatives are not enough. I found myself wanting to learn the Hebrew lyrics to the songs! Not that the Greek songs are not as beautiful, the album is quite simply amazing. I look forward to their next collaboration.
One of the Best Albums Ever!.......2001-05-08
I bought this album while in Tel-Aviv, Israel after hearing one of the songs, Yad Anuga (Swift Hand), in a music store. I absolutely fell in love with that song the first time I heard it. But, after I bought it, I only expected to like that one song. Fortunately, I realized that after listening to the cd all the way through, that every single song on this beautifully arranged album is so incredibly rich and special that I listen to it almost every day. There isn't one song I don't love - they are all amazing!... The music on this cd is so varied, from Greek, to Spanish, to Hebrew, and George Dalaras' forceful yet soft voice coupled with the immensely talented Israel Philharmonic makes this one of my favorite cds in my collection. Especially listen to track 8, America Insurrecta, which is a Pablo Neruda poem from his Canto General put to some of the most enchanting, haunting, and incredible music I have ever heard. I love it, and can't sing its praises any more. Buy this album!...

When you try to classify Dalaras as a Greek Voice or a Greek Spirit or a Greek Treasure, you miss the most important thing. The man can sing like no one else. If you know the language, you can appreciate the poetry, and if you dont, you cant help but marvel at the voice.
Like others from around the world, like Mercedes Sosa for example, if George Dalaras sang in English, he'd have been deified by now.
On this recording, the band is as tight as can be, whether it is bouzoukee or saxaphone. The arrangements flow like water; and Dalaras takes you by the hand with a voice, and a delivery that you just wont find anywhere else.
A wonderful collection.
Voice of Fire.......1999-12-04
A glorious live recording. Doesn't matter if you don't understand Greek. Listen to the spirit of a nation, a voice like the sea, the passion, the pain, the joy. This CD is never far from my player. The only thing better is actually being at a Dalaras concert (and if you ever get the chance, go).
Terrific!!.......1999-09-02
I've had this CD over a year now and it's been a favorite of my family. Along with Haris Alexiou, George Dalaras really conveys the spirit of what is so wonderful about Greek music. So get this CD, and site down with a glass of wine (or ouzo, if you're adventurous) and let the music take you away!
excelent.......1999-08-12
His music combines sadness, peace, hope and melancholy. You can feel the typical spirit of Greece in his voice. A wonderful example of the true Levantin music (rembetico).
The True Greek Voice.......1999-03-18
I agree with the previous reviewer (Doors12077)with his analogy of Dalaras. He has the spirit of Greece in him. This cd is a mixture of the Greek culture, his passion, and musical talent. He IS a national treasure in Greece! His expressive gift for music is exhibited here. A wonderful example of the true Greek voice.
