Album Description

L.A.-based modern rock quartet Kara's Flowers - frontman Adam Levine plus Jesse Carmichael, Mickey Madden and Ryan Dusick - were the nucleus for what would become - with the addition of James Valentine -today's hot act Maroon 5. Southland stars in the late '90s, these friends since high school released only one full-length disc, an instant favorite among fans of world-class, literate, Beatle-esque pop-rock everywhere.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars !Fourth World! .......2006-03-19

Anyone buying this expecting it to be maroon5 style, it is not. in some ways it is better.Adam Levine's voice is different and has obviously matured from this to "songs about jane". I dont see Kara's Flowers as Maroon5, although they techniaclly are, i feel that it is a very different band.

This Ablum , as other reviews have said, is beatle-esc and is a good album to listen to whatever your mood. My favourtie song has to be "My Ocean Blue" which is most defiantely beatle-esc. Others like the opening track 'soapdisco' sound slightly punk-pop-y. Another great track is 'Oliver'.

All in all a brilliant album for anyone to buy.

3 out of 5 stars Sounds like Maroon 5 Demos...Not the Best There is.......2006-01-02

I'm telling you this is almost a classic if it were older...but I just liked Maroon 5 better. Don't get me wrong, they did a little better than ok job with this CD. But it just sounds like Maroon 5 demos, which is not the best.

Please, go for Maroon 5 instead

4 out of 5 stars Pleasant Surprise.......2005-12-27

I have been a fan of Maroon5 since I saw "Harder to Breathe" on VH1 a full six months before they were the hot ticket. Think what you want about that...but today, I found the coolest surprise at Best Buy. Honestly, I had never heard that they had released the Kara's Flower CD so when I found it, I was probably the most happy I've been to find a CD. In any case, on with the review. Like many people have said, this disc is definitely completely different from Maroon5. It is free of the R&B flavor that Songs About Jane was. Honestly, I was a little scared when I read their little disclaimer on the back. But instead of being some sort of ridiculous hard metal, it turned out to be bubbly, almost Click Five sound. Lyrically, it's probably more radio friendly than Maroon5. This is definitely something you want to try if you are in the mood for something new. If you want Maroon5...go buy their live CDs...or wait for their new album. This isn't for the hardcore-i-love-maroon5-because-they-have-that-r&b-rock-edge...So go into this CD expecting nothing and you'll be happy.

5 out of 5 stars <3 for KF & M5.......2005-10-27

If you were the biggest fan of Maroon5 like you claim, you would appreciate their earlier sound. This album is incredible, very different than Songs About Jane but a great sound in its own right.

3 out of 5 stars Not The True Maroon 5.......2005-10-23

I must say, I am the most obsessed person in the world, literally, with Maroon 5, but Kara's Flowers is a let down. When I listened to Soap Disco, it upset me. I find this C.D. very plain and boring, and the music is like pop country. If you're looking for a real C.D., try listening to Songs About Jane, Maroon 5's best C.D. yet. Or if not, try these other popular bands:

The term "Fourth World" has often been used to describe various ethno-electronic compositions. Joining trumpeter Jon Hassell in different combinations on Possible Musics are coproducer and synthesist Brian Eno and percussionists Nana Vasconcelos and Ayibe Dieng, among others. Hassell has found a unique way to summon a lush, otherworldly sound from his trumpet, applying the Indian vocal techniques he learned from Pandit Pran Nath to the way he plays his instrument. On Possible Musics, he mixes his ethereal brass sounds with hand percussion, bass, analog synths, Eno's trademark studio treatments, and the occasional looped trumpet or keyboard riff. The hypnotic fusion of Indian and African aesthetics creates a dreamy brand of otherworldly world music that, despite the electronic influences swirling around it, maintains a strongly organic feel. This classic recording predated all of the ethnoambient music that proliferated throughout the last decade, but unlike many of those efforts, it still retains a strong sense of identity. --Bryan Reesman

5 out of 5 stars Far Ahead Of Its' Time.......2006-09-18

The best of the Jon Hassell I've heard, and among the best Eno as well - this disc hasn't dated one bit; if anything it was way, way ahead of it's time.

Sparse (as is typical) ambient instrumentation, which in earlier incarnations of ambient music was less techno-oriented, and more drawn from world, jazz and experimental/classical sources; here the prophet synth, Hassell's flugelhorn, Eno's loops and textures and the layered rhythms (somewhat processed and submerged into the mix) are the attractions.

About the only comparison I could make, aside from their own work, would be certain bits of early 1970s Miles Davis, where some similar electronic processing of trumpets (over multi-layered percussion) was happening.

In any case, this is a very unique and extraordinary disc.

-David Alston

5 out of 5 stars One of his best.......2005-07-14

It's unusual and it won't appeal to everyone - check descriptions below. I just want to add that if you appreciate the sounds on this album, you will also enjoy "Aka/Darbari/Java" and "Power Spot" ... similar mood and instrumentation.

5 out of 5 stars Unexpected Masterpiece.......2005-04-06

I bought this as an LP just on a lark back in the middle '80s, I knew nothing about the musicians at the time -- but one listen to that LP blew me away, I had never heard anything like that before, it was truly the first of its kind in terms of ambient sound and musical sophistication and imagination. Hassell and Eno became two big discoveries for me thanks to this "Possible Musics" album (I was drawn by the title, that's what made me pick it up).

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Chilling, Subliminal Psychedelia.......2003-04-27

Over a background of sonic loops by Eno and gently pulsating percussives, the wailing, harmonized flugelhorn of Jon Hassel brings to mind some kind of animal transforming into a human. The effect produced by this semi-ambient collection of instrumentals may seem strange and alien to western ears at first, but upon repeated listenings becomes sensually soothing, and works both in a capacity of background or meditation music to get lost in. Hassel's unique style emphasizes both the importance of notes and breath sounds, and truly gives his instrument a life of its own.

Fourth World Vol 1 (where are the others???) treads a line between jazz, ambent and eastern devotional music, finding its own niche in the course of listening. Of special note is the final track, "Charm (over Burundi Cloud)", clocking in at 21:29 and could have been longer if not for the limitations of vinyl production at the time of the original's release. One wonders if the original sessions of Possible Musics could be made available ...... my only criticism of this package being that it seems like more of a sampler, a teasing taste, of all that it could be.

3 out of 5 stars Those Congas!.......2003-01-30

This is one of the more enjoyable Eno collaborations from the late sventies / early eighties period, and I think the reason is that the focus isn't on Eno, it's on Hassel. A lot of Eno's coauthored albums sound like Eno with guest musicians, but this one is different. Hassel is a great trance composer; he would have been a good DJ nowadays.

This record features a bizarre (yet pleasant) combination of styles: there are of course the indian influences, but there are also traces of Terry Rily (in the looped keyboards) and Brian's contemporary work with David Byrne. The instrumentation is sparse: Two Congas, Trumpet, Prophet V synthesizer, and Bass Guitar, but these colors are blended superbly to form some great sound paintings. I wish there were more records that use the Prophet V like this one does.

And the drumming - I have never heard such exquisite Conga work anywhere.

One warning: Hassel's style might grate on some people's ears, as it does with mine, but it can be handled in small doses. But the 22-minute-long song at the end of the record can get annoying in some places. If you have heard Hassel before and like it, you'll like this record, but if you're not sure, well, you were forewarned.

5 out of 5 stars Hassell's High Point: Rhythmic Variety.......2005-10-01

If you are looking for a good introduction to the incredibly original work of Jon Hassell, this is a great place to start. For the uninitiated, Hassell is a trumpet player who uses the instrument more as a sound-generating device than in the usual sense of playing trumpet. He uses a lot of vocal techniques when he plays, then further runs his sound through a barrage of processors to get very un-trumpet-like sounds. A truly unique musician and composer.

Just before recording this LP, Hassell had been working with Brian Eno and Talking Heads, and he absorbed their ability to craft strong world-rhythms. This gave his meandering compositions a grounding and propulsion they heretofore lacked. Eno and company's influence can be heard in the slight-of-hand backing tracks here, where the percussion and bass play shifting melodies that constantly intermingle like cards being shuffled.

What makes this stand out from his other work, however, is the way each song's rhythm creates a unique sound world for that particular song. Some of his other work tends to have a sameness of sound over the entire project (with each project sounding different from the others). Here, each track shifts into its own thing, and each song takes you on a sonic voyage and leaves a unique melodic imprint on your brain. Yes, there is a sort of overall feel, a psychedelic swirling of processed trumpet sounds set against rhythms at once earthy and primitive, yet urban and experimental. Yet you can feel each track stretching in a different direction, giving the album a variety that results in an easy-to-digest listening experience.

Still under the influence of Eno's production, Hassell also shows us his ability to create using post-production and sound-shaping techniques. I dare anyone to find me something that sounds like "Chor Moire!" The texture of the music here reminds me of the best of Eno's ambient work, but with more of a rhythmic thrust and organic feel to it. Yet the studio manipulations never take away the warmth of what is essentially a live-in-studio, greatly improvised jazz recording.

I recommend this highly for anyone who likes music that is subtle, innovative and beyond category. If only Miles Davis had been listening to Jon Hassell instead of Michael Jackson before he died, he might have kept his position at the forefront of progressive trumpet music.

1 out of 5 stars give me a break.......2004-04-14

notwithstanding the other reviews, when i put this on my player i had to check to see if it was functioning properly. rarely have i heard such a cacophony described as music. pure noise.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond music.......2002-12-05

John Hassel's music cannot be described in ordinary terms, so I'm left only with earnest hand-waving. This "music" has the power to transport body and soul from the comfort of your own sofa. Jon's entire opus is extraordinary, but this CD really has some kinda magic.

Strangely, I most often put this CD on when I'm not feeling well. Its healing powers always helps me get through a fever. It's like a 40 minute session with my own private shaman.

This is music best heard in a reclining position with the lights down low. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Suitable Companion to Fourth World Vol. 1.......2001-12-21

This is "Volume 2" and they could easily have been packaged as a double LP set.

Here, Hassell does his own thing without Brian Eno as producer. As on succeeding LPs, he pursues a cleaner and somewhat louder version of his signature sound. Here, it works well and again takes us into realms of trance that no one had taken us to before. Enough of the LP sounds outstanding and slightly different from the music on Volume 1 to make this worthwhile in its own right.

4 out of 5 stars Another great trip down the MFU memory lane.......2005-10-19

Volume 2 (comprised of 2 CDs) is another first rate compilation of the series' original music and not to be missed by U.N.C.L.E. fans. The liner notes are wonderful and add a lot to ones appreciation of the music.

My only problem is that THE CDs ARE COPY PROTECTED! Considerable work is needed to get the music onto your iPod, if you really want the music in your mp3 collection. This is a major hassle and a surprise, since the first set in the series was not copy protected.

5 out of 5 stars The best of the three Double CDs ORIGINAL soundtrack release.......2005-07-12

Many of us have always thought The Man From UNCLE had the best music for a TV series ever, and this three double CD release confirms this. Wow! I'd be just happy with one CD, but having SIX (three double CDs packages) is absolutely out of this world, I mean, a lifetime wait come true.

Indeed, this is an unbelievable collection of three double CDs packages with the complete series soundtrack, and I mean the complete music, not a tune is missing.

And this is the ORIGINAL Man From Uncle music. Let me stress the point: this is the four years ORIGINAL soundtrack with the original recordings as they were heard throughout the series, not a no-name orchestra doing personal versions of the stuff. The audio transfer is very, very good, the music from late episodes is even in stereo.

Each individual CD carries over 70 minutes of music. All in all there you have the four TV seasons main titles and all, absolutely all of TMFU unforgetable music.

This is not a chronological release, meaning, all CDs have a mix of music from all four TV seasons. Volume 1 is heavier on early TV seasons stuff, fans of Jerry Goldsmith will love it. Those of us who prefer what Gerald Fried and later Richard Shores did with TMFU music, then volume 2 is mandatory. If you are a fan, you can't miss any of these six CDs. However if buying all three double packages is too much for you, you must go with Volume 2, no questions asked. Volume three is the weakest of them as it brings "suites" and a whole CD with "The Girl From Uncle" soundtrack, but you have a bonus "Open Channel D" beeper.

Each package is gorgeous, each with a glossy color booklet with extensive liner notes with details on how each tune was written to a specific TV series episode and how it was used onwards. You have bios on the composers, on how the recordings were made, even an overview on how many instruments were available in each of the years the music was recorded.

So, throw away your Hugo Montenegro Man From Uncle CD, this is the REAL thing.

5 out of 5 stars I can name that tune in three notes.......2005-02-19

My family likes to put this disc in on shuffle and play name that tune. I wish they made more discs like this, only with more obscure works.

5 out of 5 stars A Fabulous CD.......2004-10-14

The Idiot's Guide to Calssical Music is an awesome Cd for those people who want to have a tiny sample of all the great classical compositions. Track 61 and 63 are my favorite.

5 out of 5 stars Mega-Sampler! This really does have 99 tracks!.......2002-03-20

Yes, this CD really does have 99 tracks. How do they do it? Each is about a minuet long. Some are longer, some are shorter, but you get the micro-essential moments of the music.

If you like burning your own CDs, then this is a great source for intra-track fillers, along the lines of They Might Be Giants' "Apollo 18" album, which has all of those short tracks on the end. The idea is to put your CD player on shuffle, so the short tracks get mixed in with the bona fide songs. The result being a very unusual album.

The booklet gives an explanation of the track, where you heard it (i.e. the Warner Brother's Cartoons, or on famous films), and where you can get the full piece of music. So it's a mega sampler CD.

I can honestly say that this CD is a great gift for the friend who has everything.

5 out of 5 stars Fun Sampler.......2001-11-09

For the beginner. You will be surprised at how many of the 99 themes you recognize here. It is an easy introduction to classical music. Nice booklet too.

5 out of 5 stars Useful........1999-03-22

Take it for what it is, a clever and useful GUIDE to classical music. No, it is NOT an uncut rendition of Beethoven's 9th symphony. It IS a cd that will jog your memory. You have heard many of the tunes presented here, but not always knowing what the work was. This is your chance to catch up with all the great classical music you have been exposed to. Cheap too.

A rather presumptive holiday title, Simply the Best Christmas Album is an unqualified best--if you like classical, choral, and symphonic music. Marquee talent such as Placido Domingo, Natalie Cole, and Jose Carreras anchor the mix, abetted by the redoubtable London Brass, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, Edward Higgenbottom & The Choir of New College, Oxford, and the Bolshoi Symphony Orchestra. This two-disc, 36-piece set presents a broad spectrum of holiday pageantry that embraces familiar traditional works like The Nutcracker and more contemporary pieces from Sumi Jo and Linda Eder. From triumphant brass and angelic choirs to stirring string pieces and rich, lovely orchestral movements, Simply the Best sets an exquisitely festive mood. --Martin Keller

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Joyous surprises!.......2006-06-01

Every once in awhile I run across an album that excells, not because of the shining brilliance of one artist, but because of the collective impact of several. Here, in this album, are some little-known gems from Christmas music literature. I was captivated by the lilting and primitive joy in "Jesus, the Light of the World," which I had never heard before. Then there is Chanticleer and its rendition of Charles Ives' "Christmas Carol," a classic too little known. There are others. If you look for unique renditions of familiar and unfamiliar Christmas music to enhance the joy of the season, this album is a must-buy.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the Best..........2002-11-19

The minute I heard Thomas Hampson sing the first few notes of Adeste Fideles, I knew I had to have this album. It is a marvelous compilation of Classical Christmas favorites (excerpts from the Bach, Vivaldi and Corelli Christmas Concertos and The Nutcracker) and standard Christmas favorites, as well as some of the lesser heard Christmas gems.

The vocal power on this 2 CD set is amazing as well--Broadway star Linda Eder, Thomas Hampson, Kiri Te Kanawa, Jose Carreras, Chanticleer, and numerous others. I usually purchase one Christmas CD a year. This was it for me this year--make it part of your holiday collection.

3 out of 5 stars It's wonderful to have Bernstein back, but the performances fall short.......2006-11-26

These 1953 mono recordings catch Bernstein a decade after his famous debut with the NY Phil. and five years before he became their youngest-ever condcutor. It's great to hear that warm, comforting voice again, although his analyses--especially the longest one devoted to the Brahms Fourth--aren't as polished as they would become. He gets pedagogical at times and runs us through a rote example-and-explanation formula. Even then, howeer, colorful Bernstein touches peek out, and we are reminded of the man who taught an entire generation to venerate classical music.

For me, the performances themselves fall short. They were often recorded in a rush, sometimes late at night after a summer concert. I know that the Stadium Sym. is actually the NY Phil., but they don't sound particularly fine, and Bernstein's interpreatations, though vigorous, often border on the slapdash. Plowing through Beethoven's 3rd, Dvorak's 9th, Schumann's 2nd, Brahms' 4th and Tchaikovsky's 6th, I found few sparks of originaity, much less genius. This is a tough admission from one of LB's geat admirers, but there you are. The original recorded sound is also a bit thin and harsh.

5 out of 5 stars Come back Lennie, we need you.......2006-02-22

This box is worth its price just for the five talks. Bernstein at this stage had a teaching style rather more stilted than the chatty sage of later years, but the combination of authority, insight and infectious enthusiasm is unique. Entertainingly offhand about the New World, he's at his best on the music he reveres most, i.e. Beethoven, Schumann, and Brahms, the first movement of whose Fourth Symphony gets a particularly in-depth analysis that left me yearning for more. Practically anyone could enjoy and learn from these talks - they're fascinating fun without a whiff of down-dumbing. When the classical and the popular cross over nowadays, the results are usually compromised and crass, but with Bernstein there doesn't even seem to be a gap to be crossed over - just a passion to share these wonders with as many people as possible. We need his all-embracing talent and vision today more than ever.

Then there are the performances. I'm not the biggest fan of mono symphonic recordings, but these positively leap down your ears, unmannered, committed and electric. It's hard to believe what was achieved under the hasty recording conditions described in the booklet. The sound is a little fierce, but good enough to make this set a wonderful gift for any open-minded but symphonically ignorant acquaintance. I can easily imagine it turning someone on to classical music.

4 out of 5 stars For Bernstein enthusiasts, it's like owning a gold mine.......2005-06-19

This new album set is something that I had heard of, but never dared to hope would be released on CD. It consists of Leonard Bernstein's very first recordings of Beethoven's Symphony No. 3 (the "Eroica"), Dvorak's "New World Symphony", Schumann's Symphony No. 2, Brahms' Fourth Symphony, and Tchaikovsky's "Pathetique" Symphony. They are all conducted by Bernstein and played beautifully by an orchestra which bills itself as the New York Stadium Symphony Orchestra, but which is really the great New York Philharmonic, using the name that they gave themselves during summer concerts.

The performances are a revelation, because they demonstrate conclusively that Bernstein did not always "exaggerate" or "overinterpret" great music, as critics frequently claim. His performances here are very, very direct and straightforward, more like Fritz Reiner or Toscanini than like Bernstein.

If this album contained only Bernstein's early performances of these symphonies, it would be interesting, but it might not really attract that much attention, since he re-recorded all of these pieces in stereo in later years, and with the same orchestra.

What makes this set so valuable is that it contains his long out-of-print lectures on these symphonies, and far from what the previous reviewer claims, they never become boring and monotonous. No musician in our time, or maybe even in the history of music, was a better or more articulate and sensitive lecturer on music than Leonard Bernstein. His legendary appearances on the "Young People's Concerts" did more for the appreciation of classical music than all the "Beethoven's Wig" albums combined. (If you don't know what "Beethoven's Wig" is, check it out and shudder at how far music appreciation has fallen since Bernstein's death.)

Bernstein had a unique ability to make classical music accessible to everybody, without ever condescending to the listener or cheapening the music. His lectures on this album, previously only available to 1950's Book of the Month Subscribers (except for part of the Beethoven lecture, which is the only one that Bernstein did re-record in stereo), are invaluable both to music students and to those who are willing to listen. All of the lectures included cover all four movements of the symphonies discussed, except for the Brahms; that one is just as extensive as the others, but it covers only the first movement of the symphony.

However--be warned, the lectures do have a flaw that the symphonies themselves do not, and that is why I have subtracted one star.

The symphony recordings are obviously remastered from magnetic tape, but the lectures have been transferred from LP's. Thus, you will be able to hear an occasional click or pop from time to time, and there is a clearly audible "skip" on the Brahms lecture. It is NOT the CD being defective, or the laser beam on your player skipping; it is clearly the lecture recordings themselves. Deutsche Grammophon, which released this CD set, is very honest about the source of the transfers to compact disc, and is to be commended for this. (They mention it in the last page of the accompanying booklet.) But this shouldn't deter anybody from buying this enormously important Bernstein set.

4 out of 5 stars Bernstein's Early American Recordings.......2005-04-02

The most recent batch of DG's "Original Masters" box sets boasts several titles that will leave classical collectors rejoicing, "Leonard Bernstein: The 1953 American Decca Recordings" foremost among them. This 5CD set features Lenny in his earliest recorded performances of some of his trademark works -- Beethoven's 3rd, Dvorak's 9th, Schumann's 2nd, Brahms' 4th and Tchaikovsky's 6th Symphonies. Bernstein would later re-record all of five these symphonies with the NYPO (btw, the Stadium Symphony Orchestra of New York IS the NYPO) to greater acclaim for Columbia, but these early accounts capture a brilliant young conductor at the threshold of greatness. Also after each performance, Bernstein offers a musical analysis, simplifying what the listener just heard as only he could, which is again something the conductor would become famous for in years to come. Well then, if this is such a great set, why the four-star rating? First, while the performances sound very good, these are 1953 mono recordings and the casual fan needs to be aware that analog and digital stereo recordings of these works by the conductor do exist, and are generally preferable. Second, the musical analysis is a nice touch, but certainly does not warrant repeated listenings, as does the music. In fact, nearly half of the contents of these five discs is LB talking, and it could have been filled with music instead, or simply sold as a less expensive 3CD set. However, these shortcomings aside, "Leonard Bernstein: The 1953 American Decca Recordings" is another outstanding release in a fine series.

    Album Description

Ann Arbor, Michigan, seems an unlikely site for the establishment of a major avant-garde festival that would shake the new-music community. Tucked away in America's heartland, the city is equally removed from the Eastern metropolises whose artists pride themselves on sensing the pulse of the times, and from the nonconformist West Coast. Yet during the 1960s Ann Arbor played host to one of the most extraordinary adventures in American music history: the annual ONCE Festival and its nexus of related activities.

The primary aim of ONCE's founders--Robert Ashley, Gordon Mumma, George Cacioppo, Roger Reynolds, and Donald Scavarda--was to create a forum for the presentation of cutting-edge music. To this end they were phenomenally successful. Performers and composers--whether little-known or renowned--embraced the endeavor, demanding almost nothing in return. Perhaps most important, however, ONCE acted as a creative stimulus for its organizers. Scavarda describes the adventure as an explosion of pent-up energy: "Suddenly we could write anything we wanted and have it heard." And they did. The ONCE composers--and many guest artists--wrote a host of new works, some experimental, others more traditional.

What united the ONCE composers was their exploration of sound, whether through the medium of extended techniques on traditional instruments, electronic (or electronically modified) timbres, or the intersection of musical sounds with those of the environment.

A major slice of ONCE's rich musical legacy--35 works constituting six hours of music--is presented here, almost all for the first time. These pieces are as diverse in style as they are compelling in expression. This landmark set, the most comprehensive document ever released of this legendary event, is an opportunity for anyone interested in contemporary music to hear history in the making. Included in the set is a 140-page booklet with a lengthy scholarly essay by musicologist and biographer Leta Miller and numerous rare photos of ONCE personages and performances.

    This wonderful man and his
    music will reach into you
    and set you soaring.
    I highly recommend any
of his music. What a gift
    R. Carlos Nakai is to all.

4 out of 5 stars Bold, ambitious attempt that hits some marks, misses others.......2002-12-06

This is an engaging and unusual integration of Nakai's flute-playing talent with an orchestral accompaniment, creating a romantic, sweeping, and contemplative score that sounds like a motion picture soundtrack in many instances. Nakai's command of the flute never wavers, but sometimes competes, rather than synchronizes with the full-bodied strings that interject themselves almost randomly throughout every piece. When the two mediums cooperate the result is moving and lyrical. One can almost visualize scenes of beauty, mourning, and determination that are the embodiment of Native American existence. But in some places, the music meanders between the two forms creating a neutral, unfocused, and occasionally dispassionate mood.

I applaud Nakai's innovation and experimentation, but I think his strongest work with Western classical music forms is still best demonstrated in his collaborations with pianist Peter Kater, such as "Migrations". Oddly enough, Kater's work with Nakai is not mentioned in the liner notes.

4 out of 5 stars Music to Contemplate By.......2002-12-01

I had never heard any of Nakai's work before buying this CD, so I came to it with no idea of what to expect. The first word that comes to my mind when I play it is "soothing." That describes the first three tracks without need of another word. With the fourth, soft sweeping strings join Nakai's plaintive flute for a feel best described as "floating" or "drifting." The fifth is sweetly mournful. The sixth brings muted brass into play. In the seventh there are moments both majestic and plaintive. And so it goes. This is quiet, thoughtful music, the kind you might play while reading some favorite old "gentle" book or practising your deep breathing. Although I generally prefer more powerful sounds from my stereo, this one is an enjoyable change of pace, and full of Native mysticism.

    Album Description

L.A.-based modern rock quartet Kara's Flowers—frontman Adam Levine plus Jesse Carmichael, Mickey Madden and Ryan Dusick—were the nucleus for what would become—with the addition of James Valentine—today's hot act Maroon 5. Southland stars in the late '90s, these friends since high school released only one full-length disc, an instant favorite among fans of world-class, literate, Beatle-esque pop-rock everywhere…in their online review, allmusic.com calls FOURTH WORLD , "an album that, at only 11 cuts, seems criminally short." Out-of-print for some time, Rhino's timely reissue allows music lovers to return to the scene of the crime, and discover this young band's smart, expressive, upbeat, and beautifully crafted debut work.

    5 out of 5 stars I LOVE IT.......2004-05-20

I wasn't really into this kind of music (before it was Christina Aguilera etc...) but i heared This Love and got the album anyway. It is soooooo different to what I'm used to but I absolutely love this CD! Every single song on this is brilliant, not like others where there are only a few good ones. Honestly, you will not regret buying this!

    1 out of 5 stars Absolute rubbish........2004-03-30

This cd isn't worth the plastic it's pressed on. More generi-boy band rock.

5 out of 5 stars Totally Whack... Hip... Rock and Roll.. Sexy! The BEST.......2003-08-02

Unbelievable CD! Every song is good! The guys are young on this album (17 years old I think) and their talent is totally infectious!

It doesn't stop here. The band changed it's name to Maroon5 and they are blasting to the top with their album "Songs about Jane" CD. Extremeley talented group and look forward to hearing more from these guys... You want great music? Make sure you get Kara's Flowers "The Fourth World".. Absolutly addicting!

    5 out of 5 stars Kara's Flowers - Fourth World.......2002-11-27

This has to be the best power pop album I have ever heard. I am always looking for something new, and was blown away when I heard this album. Definitely Beatles influenced, but with a good crunch to them. This band has moved into the top of my list for favorite bands. Although their Stagg Street Recording album is much different and more mellow, I definitely recommend it if you are looking for more quality music.

5 out of 5 stars flower of the day.......2000-07-26

what can i say, this album just totally rocks! kara's flowers are even better live in concert. i saw them at the glass house opening for phantom planet and let me tell you, adam levine can really sing. so, buy the cd!
