Two-and-a-half hours of bliss.......2007-04-04
This may be the best money I've ever spent. I got 2-1/2 hours of bliss for less than what I'd usually pay for one CD -- and you know how it is with music. You buy an album because of a song or two that you love, and you find that you like maybe half the songs on it. There's not a single selection in this one that I would've left out. It includes Joaquin Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez, performed by Pepe Romero on the guitar with the Acadamy of St. Martin in the Fields. I needed to replace my old LP recording of that. But I also get 30 other classical compositions and traditional Spanish pieces, each special in its own way.
Have you ever heard music that you wanted to last forever, maybe even to dive inside and live there for a while, immersing yourself in sound? That's how I feel about this collection. The only problem I have with it is that I bought it thinking it might be nice to listen to while I write. Not so. It's terrible for that. I'll sit with my hands poised above the laptop keyboard, assuring myself I'll get some work done while I listen. The music takes hold and carries me away.
I'm not expert at describing this or any type of music. I just know what I love. You might too, if you enjoy classical or Spanish guitar -- unless you have absurd expectations about combining listening with work.
not what i expected.......2007-03-26
This CD for me was a waste of money. Its just not what i thought it would be. Others may enjoy it but for me..it wasnt what i was hoping to hear.
excellent guitar performances.......2006-07-27
Outstanding guitar performances. I gave it only 4 stars because I do not personally like some of the compositions.
Essential Guitar..........2005-07-26
Up until this collection, I'd never heard the "Cavatina" played in the Deer Hunter movie. After hearing it, I could play it all day and not tire of it! It moves me that much, considering that it's almost "not" a classical guitar selection. The rest of the music is first rate! Excellent playing, but the "Cavatina..."
Buy it and enjoy!!!!
Lives up to its Name!.......2005-06-10
If you only bought this double CD set, you'd have a good starter collection of classical guitar music. It includes most of the standards, as well as rarer pieces. In addition to the many solo pieces, there are several excerpts from orchestral works, with Rodrigo's indispensible Adagio from "Concierto de Aranjuez" topping the list. There are also several flamenco numbers included, complete with heel taps and castanets.
The recording quality is uniformly good, even on the tracks by Segovia. I don't know if they were remastered or recorded late in his career, but they're free of the surface noise present in so many of his recordings. The set clocks in at a generous 2 1/2 hours - one of the greatest deals in instrumental music; this is not a "bargain" quality set. Listen to the samples online - great stuff.
My only mild criticism is in the marketing. The advertising features John Williams and Julian Bream. Each contributes exactly one track. I would have enjoyed more pieces by them for stylistic comparison. But the less well-known (at least to guitar music neophytes like me) artists are every bit as good, and I intend to obtain more of their work.

Cantata Mundi making the past very present.......2007-03-10
The fact that I don't understand a word of the lyrics of this CD is what challanges my imagination more than anything else. I think of the dead Latin language of the Roman Empire. Intended or not, this CD somehow gives life to ancient tales about the mediterranian people about the epoch of Christ. Sometimes the use of female vocals in conjunction with classically arranged harmonies (often reminding me of Mozart) makes me think of some cult of Maria Magdalene. At other times (eg. 'Song of the Plains') the music seems to bring me on a journey through the world of females, a journey in time and space.
Beautiful Music.......2006-11-10
This CD is the best of two different Musical Types. The orchestrtion and the choral components are wonderfully matched. When you listen to this you can go on a journey that is so magical!
The BEST Adiemus.......2006-11-06
It's hard to decide which of the Adiemus CD's I would rate as best. However, as the title suggests, this is the title I always recommend to friends who have never heard any of Karl Jenkins' work. Every track is a great experience as well as a unique musical journey. Stated conversely, if you don't like this album, you won't like anything else by Karl Jenkins.
Adiemus II.......2006-08-11
Overall, I think this is the best of the Adiemus works. The symphonic overtones add greatly to the richness of the songs.
Gasps & Goosebumps! A 2,000 Mile CD!.......2005-10-28
This is my first experience listening to Karl Jenkins' music and I would give this CD 10 stars. I got the CD the day before taking a 500 mile trip and just took it out of the box and placed it on my dash. I had bought the CD for cut#8 Chorale IV which I heard on a cable TV New Age music station. I listened to them all and pretty much skipped cut #1 Cantus-Song of Tears because it started off a little boring.
Boy was I wrong! Cut#1 is possibly one of the most startlingly beautiful pieces EVER written. It takes a minute to get going, but it is breathtaking. It caused me to gasp "Wow!" and raised the hair on my arms each time I listened to it. The gorgeous payoff of this piece comes in at 6 minute 51 seconds. As another reviewer said, they used this piece in a live show and I was wondering as I listened to it why someone wouldn't put it to that great use.
This music not only gives you mind pictures, it can transcend distance OR time. I felt myself standing on a cliff in the Himalayas looking down across space and time. Incredible! Karl Jenkins is definitely an unhearalded musical genius.
Cut #14 Cantilena is what I would like played at my funeral if I go having lived a truly good life (which I have.) It is a fitting denouement of a good life. Same for #15 Elegia.
I had not read the jewelbox info before i played this CD and thought I heard Miriam Stockley. Great mix, these two artists! She is vastly talented and the Africa, Latin, Classical mix that she infuses makes this CD so addictive, I listened to it on two trips, over 2,000 miles! I will be buying more Karl Jenkins music.

Album Description
This recording presents a selection of some of the least and the best known exponents of twentieth century Latin-American guitar repertoire, among them the internationally renowned Argentinian composer Máximo Diego Pujol, whose Elegy for the death of a tanguero is an elegant homage to his compatriot, the father of the classical tango, Astor Piazzolla. Leo Brouwer is found in unusually lyrical mood and two of Piazzolla's most popular songs are heard in an arrangement by Colombian-born guitarist Ricardo Cobo.
Customer Reviews:
Perfection.......2006-02-05
What can I say? Every piece on this recording I love, and Ricardo plays them all to perfection. This CD is sure to get more play than most of my other CDs. If you like classical guitar check out all the Naxos label CDs, I own like 4-5 of them, and they are all excellent listening. This one I must say stands out to me, but mainly because of my preference for Latin guitar music.
Sensuous and poetic playing with amazing technique.......2004-08-17
Although I'm honestly tired of all the "Latin collection" CDs out there, this one is played by a "real" Latin and you can hear it from the first track. It is not only believable, but compelling. The poetry in Reis's two pieces (Track 2,3) is simply beautiful and Cobo's phrasing is refreshingly provocative rather than safe. This player's music is fluid, his sound silky and detailed, and his musical thinking exciting and natural. Although I have several versions of Piazzolla on guitar, these arrangements totally rock. Cobo's arrangement of "El Choclo" is dazzling, especially the last variation. Without saying more, every track on this recording is really special. Take it from a serious student of guitar and avid listener- this CD is a must-have if you like guitar.
An eclectic collection of guitar music, wonderfully played!.......2004-07-07
This is my favorite CD of Latin American guitar music. Ricardo Cobo is a Columbian guitarist currently living in Las Vegas and his playing is among the best I've heard. As the liner-notes indicate, this CD features some well-known Latin American composers as well as some who are virtually unknown. (Outside of the Cuban composer Leo Brouwer, all the composers whose music is featured on this CD are South American.)
The pieces by Manuel Pujol are particularly moving (his work in homage to Piazzolla is alone worth the price of the CD!), as are the two works by the little known composer, Dilermando Reis. Also worth mentioning is Leo Brouwer's piece 'Un Dia de Noviembre,' a beautiful modal ballad (in the natural minor 'Aeolian' mode) that sounds almost like 'new age music' but that is more interesting and subtle. I don't particularly care for the two pieces by Astor Piazzolla (the 1st and last tracks on the CD), as I don't think they fit well with the rest of the CD's music, but overall this CD has enough beautiful guitar music to warrant many listenings. Some of the slower pieces are reminiscent of the music of the brilliant Paraguayan guitarist/composer Agustin Barrios, whose music was neglected for too long but is now getting serious attention (I would recommend David Russell's recording of Barrios' music for solo guitar -- simply beautiful).
And with Naxos' extremely low prices, you really can't go wrong with Cobo's CD!
Great guitar CD.......2003-12-18
I've been waiting for this CD to come out. It was worth the wait. The pieces are familiar Latin guitar music. The playing is the best I've ever heard on any Cobo recording. His Latin soul comes through in this recording. With his superior technique he gets an amazing sound out of the guitar. The richness of this music comes through more with each listening. Buy this CD! You won't regret it.
If you like the tango or classical guitar, this is for you.......2003-12-15
I had looked forward to Cobo's release of this collection of Latin American guitar music. There are few players on the planet who can match his technique and sound (he won the prestigious Guitar Federation of America Competition in 1987), and fewer yet with such direct ties to Latin American music (he's a native of Colombia and has received that country's highest honors for accomplishment in the arts). The CD doesn't disappoint. Much of the music is familiar to guitarists, although not all from guitar renditions (Cobo has transcribed some popular tangos from piano or other mediums). Cobo's talent is apparent and consistent throughout. If you like the tango or similar music, and/or if you like to hear the classical guitar played well, you'll like this recording.

Sàndor, still active at 90 as this reissue appears, was a student of Bartók and a preferred interpreter of his music. Since this set appeared on nine LPs in the early 1960s, it has been the standard for Bartók's piano music; in this fine-sounding reissue, it still is. Sàndor can hit hard enough for such virtuoso pieces as the Piano Sonata and "Out of Doors," but he also retains the romantic element heard in the composer's own playing which tempers the harsher qualities of the music. While this collection isn't quite as complete as advertised (some early, insignificant piano music by Bartók is omitted), it includes all of Bartók's significant piano music, including such relatively obscure gems as the Bagatelles, eight Improvisations, and many delectable folk arrangements which will appeal even to listeners who think Bartók is too challenging for them. Vox's recorded sound, superbly remastered, resists obsolescence as effectively as Sàndor's performances. Even with the inclusion of the early books of "Mikrokosmos," which will appeal mostly to piano students, this set is worth several times the asking price. --Leslie Gerber
Customer Reviews:
Microcosmos.......2007-03-08
Sándor was a champion not only of Bartók's music but also of Bartók's style of playing. He often complained that people were too quick to see Bartók as ultra-modern, and to fail to appreciate the rich seam of lyricism that also runs through his music.
The piano music is dominated by short pieces, many of them written for piano students, notably the collections "Microcosmos" and "For Children". These, together with suites of folk dance arrangements, make up the bulk of the solo piano output.
Sandór plays these short, and often simple pieces, with neither too much nor too little art. As a gifted teacher, he knew unerringly how much music each of these small vessels held. The result is beguiling - but be warned: no-one can listen to the 153 short pieces of Microcosmos end-to-end. This is an anthology to be dipped into, not swallowed whole.
The remastering is pretty successful (fortunately - some of Vox's CD reissues are plagued by severe deterioration of the original tapes). And it's for half nothing-what's not to like?
Great value with a few flaws.......2006-07-28
I am not a Bartok expert by any scale, but I do like the way these pieces, without exception, are played. There are, however, a couple of other problems.
As mentioned by an earlier reviewer, very few of the works are split into tracks - Mikrokosmos is divided into 7 for each of its six volumes, and to accomodate for a full CD. In these seven tracks there are 121 songs. I would have much preferred if the songs had been split into tracks. Almost the entire CD set is this way - Fifteen Hungarian Songs is one track, Fourteen Bagatelles, etc. It is very annoying when one wants to hear a particular song in those tracks and not the others.
Another detriment to the collection is the recording quality. It is decent most of the time, but in loud sections the piano buzzes. One might be able to ignore it, but I think that it detracts from the passion of the forte quite a bit.
Overall, for $18 it is pretty decent, but if you are like me and like to keep your music library neatly organized (and aren't extremely cheap), I would not recommend this set.
eeh, I guess I don't like Bartok that much.......2006-07-25
I like the fact that Bartok is into the folk tradition and all, but he just tends to forget the fact that melody has to be SOMEWHERE in the music. I'm all for creative expression when you're sitting alone at the piano, but abstract music should be reserved for performance art. I like playing some of your stuff Bela, but I just don't want to listen to you.
Best classical value out there.......2005-10-05
To put this set in perspective, for months I would go to my local Tower Records fishing for worthwhile classical CDs at least once a week. One of the discs that sat in the bins the longest was a single CD of Bartok piano music, played by Zoltan Kocsis. It was Volume 7 of a complete series. This CD listed for $17.99, and as long as I went to that Tower Records, it did not budge an inch, nor was its price amended.
Now, Kocsis is one of the greatest pianists alive, and if anyone is worthy of commanding a premium, it is him. And to be fair, that CD is going to be re-released on October 11 as part of a Collector's Edition - eight CDs, $63.97 MSRP. But it's already going up against this little gem, which contains five CDs with all of the truly great solo-piano works by an internationally recognized Bartok specialist for $21 - not much more than the cost of one CD from the other set. This kind of value is not to be taken lightly.
I came to this set with my impression of Sandor informed by his complete Prokofiev - ultra-hard, sometimes rhythmically slack, always melodically lacking in some way or another. But he held a very special feeling for Bartok, and saved his best playing for the great Hungarian. In passages like the first of the Three Csik Dances, the opening of the Improvisations Op. 20, or in the Ten Easy Pieces, there is a simplicity, charm and wistful homesickness that is quite touching. In pieces like the Out of Doors suite, the Sonata, or the Burlesques, there is a vicious, impulsive energy, a wicked sense of humor and an overabundance of overtones. It is never mindless, inappropriate or even overly harsh - it's just very, very loud.
In this set I like best the endless landscape of the Sonatina, the unusual colors and fragrances in the Etudes, the brilliantly conceived Bear Dance (the last of the Ten Easy Pieces), and the multifaceted, complex, gorgeous Improvisations. Any fan of Bartok should hear these.
5 Stars for the music and performance.......2005-04-04
This is a fantastic deal, but the problem with this Collection stems from the fact that the pieces are often not separated by tracks. This is especially annoying for the Children's Pieces and Mikrokosmos. There are so many pieces, one wears out the fast forward button and still may miss the particular piece one is looking for. The booklet is fairly insightful, and the performer is widely hailed as the supreme interpreter of Bartok's piano music. So aside from this slightly annoying at times and ridiculously annoying at other times flaw, this is one of the best deals in Classical music. Don't hesitate. Add it to the cart.

These are wonderful cds. They include Andres Segovia,Julian Bream, John Williams, Presti/Lagoya and Pepe Romero among other guitarist's. This two cd set has a rare performance of Segovia with the "Symphony Of The Air"performing Boccherini's "Cello Concerto in D". John Williams performing Bach's "Cello Suite In D" at seventeen years old. Also Ida Presti and Alexandre Lagoya performing Debussy's "Clair de Lune" and Granado's "Spanish Dance No.2 The Oriental". Presti/Lagoya's music has long been out of print and to the best of my knowledge this is the first time their music has been available on cd.These cd's have over 2 and a half hours of music and are well worth the money.

Throughout his career, pianist-composer Bill Evans successfully melded Bud Powell's fiery bop-paced technique with the lyricism and harmonic language of the French impressionists Ravel and Debussy. So it was only natural that he would record a session that combines the jazz and classical traditions.
Released in 1965, this date features Evans's trio with drummer Larry Bunker, who, three decades later, guest-starred on Diana Krall's When I Look in Your Eyes, and the sensitive bassist Larry Bunker. They're augmented by the azure-tinged arrangements by the famed conductor Claus Ogerman, who worked his magic with artists from Antonio Carlos Jobim to Frank Sinatra. The result of this union is a swinging and seamless interplay in which improvisation becomes spontaneous composition, and vice versa. The linearity and logic of Evans's lines erase centuries of musical distance from the works of Bach, Chopin, Granados, Fauré, and Scriabin, with the trio's trademark telepathy expressed in 4/4 and 3/4 time signatures and light Latin tinges. Evans's haunting compositions, "My Bells" and "Time Remembered," imbued by Ogerman's ethereal strings, are the jewels of this delightful recording, whose brilliance has increased with time. --Eugene Holley Jr.
Customer Reviews:
Still amazing after all these years..........2007-07-23
Dumb luck... I was given my first copy of this album in the mid-1960's 'cause the program director of a radio station I was working for "didn't play jazz."
It was "kismet." Now I have multiple CD's of Bill Evans with Symphony Orch. - one for each car, and one for home. In spite of some minor technical flaws, this is an absolutely wonderful album to relax to. The orchestral parts are lush and well brought off, and the trio's playing is exceptional. If you have one oar in jazz and another in classical, please do yourself a favor and buy this CD. "You'll thank me later..."
Bill Goes 'Symphonic'.......2004-06-10
This is an unusual Bill Evans recording, as it combines his trio with a "symphony orchestra" playing arrangements by Claus Ogerman of several "classical" themes along with two of Evans's most haunting originals: "Time Remembered" and "My Bells". Not that there's much of a classical feel to the orchestrations: apart from the Vaughan Williams/Shostakovich overtones of Ogerman's "Elegy", the orchestral music is more reminiscent of a glossy 1960s/70s film score. There's some attractive woodwind and french horn, but on some of the tracks the large string section might be a bit too lush for some tastes. Fortunately, on most tracks the orchestra confines itself to stating the theme at the opening and in a few places playing a fairly discreet accompanying role, but generally keeping out of the way of Evans's improvisations. So the main "fusion" interest lies in what Evans does with the themes in his solos.
One of the minor oddnesses of the album is the way in which, on some tracks, the beginning of Evans's solo launches into a very different tempo and mood from the one just established in the orchestra's theme statement. Sometimes - as on Faure's Pavane - this creates a musically effective contrast; elsewhere - as on "Granados" - it leaves you feeling too sharply aware of the incongruity rather than empathy between the different musical worlds being brought together. Maybe that's partly why the most satisfying of the "classical" tracks are the Bach Sicilienne and "Blue Interlude" (on Chopin's C minor Prelude): each solo seems to grow organically out of its theme and both themes inspire Evans to some excellent improvisation. Listen, for example, to the way in which he exploits the "bluesy" aspect of the Chopin as his solo builds to its climax. Evans's own "My Bells" is another high spot of the album - an attractively nostalgic modal theme tastefully arranged for the orchestra, leading to a gently swinging solo and a rubato restatement of the theme by Evans before a wistful coda.
There's certainly a lot of absorbing, beautiful playing from the Evans trio here, including a high level of melodic invention and incomparable rhythmic subtlety from the pianist. But the appeal of the album will largely depend on what you think of the orchestra's part in the proceedings. It's probably one to try before you buy.
A Gem Among Bill's Recordings.......2002-06-25
This recording is a gem of Bill's playing. Simple, clean lines, and a beautiful background by Claus Ogerman. I listen to this recording over and over. I was a fan of Bill Evans and Claus Ogerman before I listened to this CD. But this exceeded my expectations of the two artists.
One for the Ages.......2001-08-09
"The Bill Evans Trio with Symphony Orchestra" was one of the first recordings I ever heard...EVER. My Mon used to play the LP while she was carrying me so I really do mean first. With that in mind it has never been far from my CD player for as long as I can remember. From all reports this was a troubled recording session with the arranger and conductor of record, Claus Ogerman having trouble controlling all the elements specifically the pick up orchestra and vocal soloist. Sometimes great things come out of great conflict to paraphrase an old saying. Because, despite all of this this is one of the most glorious recordings ever produced. The Ogerman arrangements are lush and beautiful to the point of distraction. Evans chose the perfect composers to compliment his style and that of his trio. Listen to his rendition of Faure's Pavane or Granados' Granadas. And Ogerman and Evans have also composed two of the tracks themselves. Gorgeous. Lie back on your sofa, turn the volume up, open a bottle of Pinot Noir and let this music take you away.
a stunning fusion of classical and jazz.......2001-05-03
There's nothing like having your expectations completely blown away - this recording is a revelation. I've set my cd player to repeat and listened to this cd for hours at a time. If you're looking for a fresh interpretation of jazz, look no further.

Customer Reviews:
The old man and his songs.......2007-02-08
Admittedly, at 70 even a heavy smoker like Paolo Conte may still have many productive years ahead, but the atmosphere and lyrics of many of the songs on this album bring the classic from one of Conte's idols to mind. Whereas Conte has looked back to younger years in earlier songs like "Gelato a Limon" and "Bartali" the retrospect here is aimed more broadly at distant times and places in general.
Recorded in the studio, supported by his trusted ensemble, his own peculiar but effective brand of pianism and "the voice" this album ranks among his very best. My fellow reviewers have already sung the praise of some of the individual songs, but to me "Sonno Elefante" with its combination of nursery song and balloon flight over the land- and timescape of a life was especially touching.
Grazie Paolo.
An expression of passion for music and life from the ultimate Italian contemporary songwriter.......2005-12-09
Elegia, in Italian, is a word that describes a poetic ideal: an ideology expressed in Italian poetry on and off since the fourteenth century. The main theme of this ideology is that the poet is the lover and the slave of his passion. Usually that passion is centered around a woman, but it oftentimes revolves around the poet's main weaknesses and the love for his own artistic expression. Elegia is the poetry of crying.
Elegia, in my opinion, is Paolo Conte's deepest poetic expression. The uncertainty of the future and the feelings of old people who look back, look forward, and sometimes are too distant from current events to look in any direction at all, are captured in this CD with mastery.
Paolo Conte begins the first song, Elegia, with "Avevo una passione per la musica... cosa faro' di me?" (I HAD a passion for music... what will I do with myself?). This almost brings tears to my eyes as if it was my own parent speaking: it is almost an admission of someone's life coming to an end. He might live longer, but will he be able to express his passion anymore? And if he cannot, will he still be the person he was?
"Non ridere, non ridere, se io cado, inciampo e faccio per andarmene... stringimi, parlami, abbracciami" (Don't laugh, don't laugh, if I fall, if I stumble and get ready to get out of here... hold me, talk to me, hug me)
Although the theme that this could be Paolo Conte's last meaningful poetic expression is pervasive (Chissa': who knows), plenty of songs don't touch on that subject. Sandwich Man is a great portrayal of a male torn between two forces: his love for his loved one and his own inability to assert his needs in a relationship. Bamboolah touches on similar topics.
Sonno Elefante, India, and Frisco make the listener wander into far foreign lands, like many previously released Paolo Conte songs did.
La Casa Cinese, Molto Lontano, and La Nostalgia del Mocambo are great songs, especially if you know what it is like to live in Italy. They combine mondane moments with deep introspective thoughts.
La Vecchia Giacca Nuova is very ironic and sheds a critical light on materialism. That is not surprising if you reflect on the fact that Paolo Conte might be thinking about how will he be remembered. And he tells us that: he wants to be remembered by his music. Molto Lontano spells it out: "m'ascolterai, mi seguirai, ma non m'amerai" (You will listen to me, you will follow me, but you will not love me.)
If you want to be loved back, start by loving someone, not something.
You either love him or hate him........2005-08-11
Paolo Conte is a great musician. I think is voice and style of music is great. This new cd is a great continuation of his previous cd. As mentioned in the previous review his starting song 'Elegia' set the stage for the cd with great vocals and instruments accompanying him. Then 'Sandwich Man' is going to be a classic with the way he shows his emotions from his voice. 'ChissÀ' is another track that I enjoyed with the joyous music and korky voice combination.
Overall the cd is worth your time and money if you enjoy his music.
Enjoy.
great album.......2005-03-12
The opening song is the highlight of this album, but there are a number of wonderful, quirky songs throughout. The second song, Sandwich Man, is a bit grating, in particular because it comes as a very abrupt contrast with the first song (Elegia).
My favorites on this one are:
Elegia
Frisco
Molto Lontano
Non Ridere

Masterful interpretation of Bartok's piano works.......2005-10-21
Without a doubt Bartok is one of the most influential composers of the 20th century. Combining a deep understanding of the possibilities of eastern European folk music - particularly Hungarian and Romanian - with an extremely advanced harmonic and rhythmic vocabulary, Bartok composed some of the greatest works of the last century.
Although Bartok wrote some sublime orchestral music (The Music for strings, percussion and celeste comes instantly to mind), it is in the realms of string quartet and solo piano music that Bartok reigns supreme among 20th century composers in the humble opinion of this reviewer.
So. Here is an 8 CD set of all of Bartok's solo piano music by (argueably) the pre-eminent interpreter of his piano music. These are insightful, passionate performances beautifully recorded.
I for one am thrilled to have this set - particularly since many of these CDs were unavailable up till now. The box is also very reasonably priced compared to the separate CDs.
Highly recommended - modern music begins here.
