4 out of 5 stars This is for Belcantista.......2006-07-20

So far as I know, Rene Fleming has never sung Manon Lescaut. I can always be incorrect, but I believe you're referring to Massenet's Manon. I have the DVD and I'm iffy about it.

I love the Callas CD and equally, the Olivero. De Stefano has the "prettier" voice, but wouldn't we love to have another Tucker show up these days.

I've enjoyed all the reviews and I always do. They are often my guide to purchases, so thanks to everyone who takes time to do this.

4 out of 5 stars Dramatic!.......2005-11-23

From the first "Manon Lescaut mi chiamo..." I was laughing my head off. Callas sounds ridiculous in most of Act I. Fortunately, Manon undergoes a sudden change and Callas is in her element. Never have I heard a more dramatic Manon! The duet with Des Grieux put my speakers on fire! Then, for some reason I thought he sounded quite impotent in "Ah, Non V'avvicinate". Act IV is without a doubt the most boring thing Puccini has ever composed. Manon's hysterical last aria was satisfactory but I thought her diction was a bit tied up.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely, heart-breaking performance.......2004-10-28

Manon Lescaut is the heroine of several operas of which two are pretty famous: Massenet's MANON and this one, Puccini's Manon Lescaut. Once again while reading the "negative" remarks all I find are insipid, bottom-showing comments that are merely personal attacks with nothing to back them up. One asked: "Why is Callas famous?" and another said "Maybe she just should just entertained Onassis. AGREED!" Well, how are these for "reviews"? And written in haste and horrid grammar! Just to hurt Callas-Fans during the shameful "diva-war" here in 2003 where all parties behaved horribly, including the Callas-party. It might be interesting to set the record straight, as the same basher called Callas "Onassis' wife" in another of his tirades. Callas was never married to Onassis and her career was in its prime when their relationship started in 1958. So he DID NOT "cause" her fame. So the "reviewer" put nothing forward except lies and ignorant, unmusical trash. And as for the other reviewer saying that Puccini needs "warmth" and Callas should stick with Bellini& Verdi: Isn't Violetta all about a heart-warming heroine? Isn't Amina one of the sweetest characters in operatic history? And I find Callas to be a great Manon even though she isn't a "natural" in the role as young Tebaldi. What she does with the character, the vocal line and the phrasing makes this essential. And di Stefano is about the most ardent and passionate Des Grieux ever! A great recording of a wonderful opera!

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully lucid .......2004-10-11

This is a most unique recording as it portrays all shades and lights of Manon Lescaut without exaggerated "verismo" tears but with lucid elegance, heartbreaking pathos and beautiful singing. If I were to choose a - I'd pick Callas' topnotes of which some are somewhat unsteady but that's like saying that the Venus of Milo is ugly because she has no arms. Another essential Callas-Gem.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Manon Lescaut.......2004-10-04

Following the review as written by a Tebaldi-Fan Verdi and Bellini isn't about feelings then? What kind of a notion is THAT? What is more about emotions than Rigoletto or La Traviata? How about Bellini's "La Sonnambula"??? These operas are ALL about feelings!!! And warmth? The lucid warmth in Callas' voice as she sings young flirtatious Manon cannot be denied. And how about del Monaco bellowing sensitive Des Grieux's phrases? Des Grieux wasn't written for a tenore robusto. I have excerpts of Manon Lescaut with Tebaldi&di Stefano when both were young and in their prime, absolutely lovely. But Callas alone also shows the dark and greedy aspects of Manon. Why does Des Grieux hate her so much at a moment? Because she acted like a "warm"-hearted and "fragile" and "sweet" girl? No, because she acted like a courtesan lusting for luxury! Manon is very close to Violetta in "La Traviata". Di Stefano always sounds at his very best in poetic and/or romantic roles. This is the Manon Lescaut to buy. And a live-recording with either Fleming or Scotto in the title-role. Young Tebaldi also sounds great. For a DVD get the one with Scotto&Domingo from the MET and the one with Renee Fleming and Marcelo Alvarez from Paris.

This is Tosca lite. The role of the tenor lead, Mario Cavaradossi, is quite heavy and strenuous in Puccini's score; in their primes, for instance, it suited the robust, darker tone of Placido Domingo over the slender, lighter sound of Luciano Pavarotti. Andrea Bocelli's voice is slenderer still--as the world knows, it's a beautiful pop singer's sound with an opera singer's top notes and feel. As a result, the orchestra in this brand new recording is kept pretty far in the background, and all of the soloists' voices are closely miked, with Bocelli's particularly forward. His fans will not mind the acoustic, and they probably also will bask in his still-lovely, ingratiating sound, despite some obvious strain (and, at times, off-pitch singing). His rendition of the famous last act aria, "E lucevan le stele," is ravishing--long-breathed, delicate, and sensitive without resorting to melodrama. As for the rest of the cast, Fiorenza Cedolins is an involved, if generic, Tosca who will not erase memories of Maria Callas, and baritone Carlo Guelfi sings the evil Baron Scarpia with an appropriate snarl. Zubin Mehta leads the orchestra in a reading which complements his tenor's style--there's more personal sadness than grand overstatement. This is for Bocelli fans--millions of them. --Robert Levine

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Clear as a bell.......2006-06-24

Tosca has been one of my favoirtes for over 40 years. Saw it at the Met, and in Philly, where else? Best memory was my first date with my wife of 35 years -- we went to the school library and spent Saturday afternoon sitting at the turn tables listening to it together with headsets on. She only told me years later it was excruciating because the headsets pressed on her glasses and made her head hurt! But she suffered through it. Her favorite tenor today: Andrea Bocelli. He handles the part beautifully. The recording is clear as a bell -- even the recording of the bells recording is a nice touch. I will have to listen to this many more times to decide how it compares to some of my other favorites, but this is truly beautiful music.

3 out of 5 stars Lacking monumentality.......2004-08-09

Ok, right, we've all said it. Bocelli is not an opera singer!!!! I agree completely. His high notes lack the freedom and ring prerequisite of even college singers. Secondly, he needs a microphone. That said, he still does have a lovely voice, if not one suited for the operatic stage. Also, the reviewer who criticized Pavarotti and said Carreras was the better of the three tenors obviously is mistaken. Any true opera fan and connaisseur knows that Pavarotti was the greatest tenor of his time with nearly flawless technique and an absolutely brilliant upper register. I would argue that any recording by Pavarotti is worth listening to! But back to this opera. I think that it is unfair to lump the other singers with Bocelli. Cedollins gives a beautiful performance as Tosca. I have heard many recordings of Vissi D'arte (Tosca's lovely aria in the Second Act) including Te kanawa, Freni, Callas, Price, and De los Angeles. However, Cedollins in my opinion gives the best performance. Her rendition of this famous aria is both heartfelt and beautiful. Mehta is an amazing conductor, and I learned how this aria is supposed to be sung and played from this album. The Scarpia is excellent in my opinion. His technique is sound and there is very little strain in his voice at any point in this challenging role. (Although I bet Terfel or Hampson could do better). Also, Scarpia's henchman has a lovely lyric voice. It's a shame he isn't the star tenor here.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing...........2004-03-17

This Tosca may be a digital stereo recording, but it doesn't hold a candle to any other Tosca, even those mono recording made by the great Callas. One problem which besets this opera is the fact that Bocelli is turned into the main star of the opera. This shouldn't be the case, as the main characters each must have their own time on spotlight. What the producers of this opera did was they blared all the audio when Bocelli came in and tuned down the sounds when other singers sang their lines. The orchestra was also barely audible, thus leeching the opera's dramatic effect. Any music listener knows that for any successful recording to be both vocally and dramatically effective, there must be a balance between both the artists and the orchestra. Zubin Mehta is an excellent conductor. His Turandot had the best orchestra every to rear its head into Puccini's Swan Song. I just don't know what happened to him here. Whether they are trying to get the light and slender voiced tenor to sing opera for dummies, I don't know. All I have to say is this Tosca is not recommended for those who wish to explore the best of the operatic realm. Whoever said that the best products don't really sell as opposed to those made by popular artists must be delusional if he thinks that this is good enough for the effort. Powerful? I don't think so. If you really want an impressive Tosca with a gorgeous cast, get the Freni-Domingo version by Deutsche Grammophone. Still, if you don't have an open mind and stubbornly insist that Bocelli is the greatest "opera" singer around, go ahead and order this Tosca.

1 out of 5 stars If he's not an opera singer why is he singing opera?.......2004-03-12

I read many of the comments about people saying that they like Bocelli's Tosca even though they understand that it's not the real thing.

C'mon guys, can you say that Carlo Rossi (cheap jug wine) is a good wine after you've known some of the better ones? Worse yet, in this case this recording is even more expensive than the better recordings on the subject. I would definitively suggest that people listened to Callas-DiStefano on this opera (just to name one of the better ones) before saying that this is a good Tosca.

By the way, Pavarotti should have NEVER recorded Tosca; if you MUST listen to one of the three tenores on this one, go with Carreras, he's the least bad of the three.

3 out of 5 stars Not a bad effort but must be put in context..........2004-02-19

What must be understood about this recording of Tosca is that it aims to please a certain type of audience, mainly fans of Bocelli's sound and style. So logically this Tosca was not produced for serious opera-going crowds, nor was it ever intended to be a serious contender to the numerous legendary versions of Tosca already out on the market. So for those wishing to listen to definitive, high-calibre Puccini, don't look for it here or bemoan the fact that this Tosca does not attempt to deliver on those goals.

The above must always be kept in mind. So discussing things like "real opera is not miked all over" or "he was laughed off at La Boheme" are totally meaningless things which have nothing to do with the ultimate success of his recordings. The fact is Bocelli's singing has mass appeal... by blending an alluring romantic "pop" sensibility to his sound while at the same time creating a serious-minded "opera-like" ambiance. Of course from a purely operatic viewpoint it is not an appropriate sound for opera, but that is not the point of its existence. Also a fact is for most average listeners, the top serious opera stars of yesterday and today have very very limited appeal regardless of how much vocally superior they are to Bocelli. So it's not so simple as comparing cheap product A to super quality product B and have everyone always choose the super quality product. If that were true, then only serious tenor recordings would just fly off the shelves and all other types of recordings would be left in a huge garbage heap. Yet the serious opera fans will continue to look at this from a serious-opera point of view, run off one legendary name after another and scratch their heads wondering why aren't these people instead rushing out and buying the entire catalougue of the real legends. The whole "Well if you love this guy, then naturally you will just fawn over THIS legend" concept just doesn't work all the time.

About this recording specifically, it has some good moments but I have to ask myself why choose this opera and especially why record ANY opera that hasn't been fully prepared and developed over time by the singer? I feel he can make a very unique interpretation with a few types of opera or songs but ONLY if he's given the right time to mature his interpretations and receives the right artistic direction and material. I've heard other full opera recordings by well known names that also failed in the end because of not enough experience in the roles, so Bocelli is no exception. No matter how good any tenor may be, dedicating very limited time to a work and with limited development of an opera role will lead to VERY inconsistant results.

And what is even more illogical is that this Tosca was recorded several years ago when Bocelli's technique was still developing and his experience with full-length opera roles and maturity were much less also... so logically this Tosca had an overall feeling of simple inexperience, like a "dry run" attempt at an entire work instead of a carefully prepared, matured interpretation... This is what I feel was a huge obstacle right away in this recording, NOT a complete lack of talent as some here have suggested.

Also, why this opera? Only because of its popularity? That is the real shame because I can imagine so many other operas better suited for Bocelli. At least with "La Boheme", Bocelli had studied the part and performed it on-stage various times for a few years. I seriously hope future recordings will be of lesser-known but more appropriate material. No Verdi or types of opera which require distinctive raw power.

All you have to do is read the title. Really. This cd is freaking awesome!

5 out of 5 stars Marvelous!!.......2004-07-23

This cd is great. I watched the movie today {but it wasn't the first time} and listened to this cd today. I think a nice song on it would be "Don't Change" by The Goo Goo Dolls. After listening to "Here Comes The Night" and "Jungle Groove"and watching the movie, it made me feel like taking a holiday to Africa just to see what it's reaaally like. {It's probably not too different from what it looks like}. Another good song is "Boll Weevil". I very much recommend it because it is INSPIRING AND WONDERFUL. At first, "Burnin' Rubber" sounded kinda weird, but it turned out being OK. The best part started on that song with a hard guitar after, "I'm burnin' rubber all over the whole woooorrrlllddd!!!!" I thought "Blur The Technicolor" was going to sound like another one of White Zombie's songs called "Ratfinks, Suicide Tanks and Cannibal Girls" which is featured on the Beavis and Butthead Do America soundtrack, but it was different.{Don't listen to anyone who disses any of these songs}. Order this soundtrack today, and if you don't have the movie, get that too. It's neat.

Disregard your opinion of both this movie and Jim Carrey when considering buying this album: the songs on here represent a wide range of sounds that create a great vibe. If you're familiar with the movie, this CD will cause some flashbacks to the movie, since a lot of this music was used in the movie in a big way. However, people who hated the movie (or Jim Carrey himself) won't find Carrey present on any of the tracks.

The album overall has an African feel, but it's very mainstream and most people will be able to get into the groove: none of the songs are too difficult for someone not familiar with tribal music to digest.

The soundtrack begins with a compelling remake of "Spirits in the Material World" by Pato Banton, with Sting, the original singer, joining in. A very quality remake, and it's very nice to see the original singer come onboard. Track 2, Blues Traveler's remake of "Secret Agent Man," is similarly a pretty good remake of the original, keeping the original feeling intact. It's much cleaner sounding because of modern recording technology, but it's still fun to listen to, like the original. It seems a little less dramatic than the original, though, and more tongue-in-cheek.

The Goo Goo Dolls "Don't Change" is personally my least favorite song on the album, as it sounds a lot like most of the Goo Goo Dolls's material. However, it's a good transition inbetween Secret Agent Man and Mr. Mirainga's "Burnin' Rubber." Burnin' Rubber is a fun little indie rock number. Nothing earth-shattering, just a fun little number.

Boll Weevil, by Presidents of the United States of America, is exactly what they do best: make a funny, seemingly-throwaway song into a really good jam. A really funky bass starts the song, which sticks with the song to the end. It's the exact same recording that's on PotUSA's self-titled debut album.

After PotUSA's silly tune, White Zombie comes in with tribal drums and hard, hard guitar. This keeps the energy of the album going.

The Reverend Horton Heat play their patented song on an african-tinged lyrical tune - it sounds a lot like the Reverend's other albums.

The remake of Here Comes the Night keeps the funk alive, with a little scatting in the middle thrown in for good measure. Again, this remake is done well, keeping the original flavor well intact, but refreshing it with a little modern-day sound.

Montell Jordan brings party music to the album with Jungle Groove, complete with synthesizers and deep background vocals. It's always a good party with Jordan, and he doesn't disappoint. Ife is an upbeat song that is very recognizable from the movie: it's played when Ace is hurting in the tent with the woman. Upbeat and positive, a great song that will cheer you up from a bad attitude.

My Pet, by Matthew Sweet, and It's Alright, by Blessid Union of Souls, are both moderate pop rock songs that move along. My Pet sounds a bit like the Foo Fighter's "Big Me" at the beginning... it could just be the singer's vocals somewhat similar to Dave Grohl's, however. It doesn't rock nearly as hard as most Foo.

Ace in Africa closes the album, as it does the movie when it plays over the end credits. It's an instrumental that reminds you this album is supposed to be about africa.

Every song on this album is a very good representation of the individual artist's tendencies: each artist is very much in their own element on every song, none of them trying to do something that seems awkward. Because of this, every song feels very good, and the album's variety is a huge strength: it feels like a mix CD that a friend would make.

I wasn't expecting much, but this album really got me. Great lyrics (if you know Portuguese) and excellent songs. Really addictive.

4 out of 5 stars Yummy! Scrumptious Listening!.......2006-02-28

I really love this band! I picked up this cd not knowing what to expect, to be honest because I have not heard much about Los Hermanos. I just knew that they were a popular band in Brazil. After listening to the cd I was pleasantly surprised, and now I'm a huge fan. I enjoy alternative music(grunge, punk etc;) and Brazilian music so I was surprised to learn of a band that melded the two together wonderfully. They're comparable to some of the so-called "great" alt-indy bands in the states, but they manage to incorporate traditional Brazilian elements into their album (as the addition of the live horn section.) The lead singer's voice is emotional and sexy (with that right balance of angst) as found in some of the best grunge bands that came out of Britain and America.

My favorites off of this album are "Samba a Dois," "Ultimo Romance," "A Outra" and "Cara Estranho" but the other songs on the album are also great. For me, having punk and brazilian beats mixed in are like having my favorite candies blended together to come up with a surprisingly great new combination. If you love alt/indy and Brazilian music as I do, check this band out they're great!

4 out of 5 stars Los Hermanos- A very creative Brazilian Band.......2005-05-25

Hello: To start with. I am not brazilian, i am argentinian and i live in miami Florida. So my critic of this album is very fair.
Los Hermanos, as other great bands have reached their perfect balance with their 3rd album.(remember Ok Computer, War and so on)
They are quite creative. But the greatest thing is "They take music seriously", and thank god. Not too!!!seriously.
I will not go in a one by one description of the songs, but i recommend this album to anyone who really listens to music in a deeper way.
They have great taste for the mixes, as well as arranging.
They are a little bit ironic. But not too ironic.

The version of "Cara estranho" on the album. I don't believe is their best. It was the most played single in brazil. So i guess that is why they went for the "Punk-hard rock chorussy mix".

If you get to listen to any of it's versions as unplugged (you might find it the net, as i did). I recommend you very much to listen to them unplugged because many songs are much better in that ambience.

Ok, so resuming. Buy this CD, if you like rock, if you like music as strange as it could be. Then buy it.
It is not the best brazilian record ever. But it's a great album. It is something different. And that's what counts.

5 out of 5 stars Great indie rock from Brazil.......2004-12-10

Brazil doesn't have a very big indie-rock scene, but this album is certainly one of the best you can find. If you like Los Hermanos, you might also try Monokini, who are also very good.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Music You Can Find Out There.......2004-10-06

Los Hermanos is currently my favorite brazilian band. They are fantastic. Ventura is their third album and it brings beautifully composed, written and arranged songs. Ventura and Bloco DO Eu Sozinho are, in my opinion, cds that everyone should listen to. Los Hermanos's sound is unique, mixing mpb, samba, rock, pop and more to create music that really is, if not always exciting, very emotional. If you are a music fan, like me, you should try this one. I think this band deserves a lot more recognition inside and outside of Brazil, so please give this one a try.

Favorite songs: O Vencedor (creative, exciting, and beautiful) , Ultimo Romance (beautiful song), A Outra (took long to really like this song, now I love it), Cara Estranho (the album's firts worksong, very, very good), o velho e o moço (beautiful, especially if you know portuguese), Deixa o Verão (along with O Vencedor, the most exciting song in this CD, among my top favorites in the disc), conversa de botas batidas (as pleasant as pop music gets), do lado de dentro (beautiful and excitingly well arranged), Um Par (emotional, exciting, well arranged, etc), De onde vem a calma (the best way to end a cd). The rest of the songs are also nearly perfect, so there is no use in listing my favorites.

I also strongly recommend O Bloco Do Eu Sozinho, wich is their best CD in my opinion.

Italian Soprano Renata Tebaldi was One of the Most Important Post-war Sopranos to Tackle a Wide Range of Puccini Roles, and During the 1950s She Recorded Several Complete Opera Recordings. Some of the Operas were Recorded Twice — in Mono and Then in Stereo. Amongst Those which Tebaldi Committed to Disc in the Recording Studio on Two Occasions Must Be Included La Bohème and Madama Butterfly. It is the Earlier, Mono Recordings of These Two Operas which Are Included Here and They Reveal a Fresh-voiced Tebaldi in Recordings Which, Despite the Stereo Remakes, have Stood the Test of Time.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to Tebaldi's art.......2005-09-29

This set covers the entire productive years of Tebaldi's recording career. Turandot, Butterfly and Boheme are from her earlier career while Tosca is from her later career. Since this Tosca recording is now out of print and is somewhat hard to find, this recording itself almost worth the cost of the set. In Turandot, you will find Tebaldi at her fresher voice, lovely and melting. Eventhough I would still rate Callas' first recorded Tosca as my first choice, this Tosca comes very close. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfull.......2005-08-19

Fantastic recordings at a very good price. Tebaldi and Del Monaco rule. You should definetely own this set.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Renata.......2005-03-16

To say that these 12 disks contain some of the finest singing ever committed to disk is no exaggeration, but a simple statement of fact. Historical fact. In the 100 years (more or less) that Puccini operas have been around, only a few sopranos in each generation have been the equal of Renata Tebaldi. One cannot objectively say that anyone has surpassed her. Some opera lovers find her peerless in many of these performances. Personal tastes in singers vary, but no one ever sang these roles better. Few anywhere nearly so well. There is not a single note on any of these recordings that is not heartfelt to the core of her being. Like Maria Callas and Franco Corelli, she was luminous, gargantuan in her talent that personified an age. This is one of the great compilations.

3 out of 5 stars A mix of studio and live recordings.......2004-06-16

Despite what a previous reviewer has said, this is NOT an all live CD. It is a mixture of studio and live recordings. It has some originals and some live recordings taken from their 1985 In Concert CD. It is a low budget compilation. Not bad, but not great.

2 out of 5 stars Don't Get Fooled Like Me!!!!!.......2000-09-23

The songs on this CD are ALL LIVE. If that is what you want, then this CD might be for you. If you want the studio versions of "You Can Do Magic", "The Border" and "Today's The Day", you are better buying "Encore- More Greatest Hits" on Rhino Records.

3 out of 5 stars Some good songs........1998-06-23

It does have some good songs, but I agree, they left some of the better stuff off. Only for avid America fans.

3 out of 5 stars A so-so compilation from their Capitol years........1998-06-17

Contains songs from their Capitiol albums, including live performances of their earlier hits like Ventura Highway and I Need You. Not a bad album, but Capitol did have better material to pick from.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars It's a gem!.......2006-11-21

Interesting mix of styles at work here. Paseabase El Rey Moro is particularly pleasing. Montserrat lends true feeling to this piece as she sings the part of the Moorish king. Her recitation of the old man's 'Dutch uncling' is unexpected and equally passionate. All this is punctuated by a musical style that never loses its Moorish influence but changes, oh so subtly, into a more 'European' mode. In direct contrast, Begona's performance of Canció en ritmo Quddan de la Nuba Gribt: Al Hussein de Marruecos is equally compelling. The voices are married perfectly to the styles of the music. In short, if you like Iberian music of this period (circa 1492), get the album. You will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Review: Isabel I: Reina de Castilla.......2005-07-27

This is a meticulously designed and recorded compilation that provides a delightful introduction to music of the late 15th and early 16th centuries . The CD includes both instrumental and vocal compositions that are performed with considerable expertise and verve. The package contains an illustrated booklet that includes an essay on the history of the period and full lyrics but, alas, is rather weak on details regarding the music other than to place it in historical context.

5 out of 5 stars Not always historically accurate, but fabulous performances.......2005-05-23

This recording presents a selection of music from the time of Isabella of Castile (1451-1504), organised to present a hypothetical illustration in sound of the main events of her reign. Connoisseurs will be familiar with a number of these pieces, many from previous Savall recordings (Palacio, Encina, Colombina discs). Alongside the Spanish works (villancicos, romances, sacred music) are examples of Turkish and Sephardic music, and also a Dufay chanson.

As on many other recordings by this ensemble, historical accuracy is secondary to an overall aesthetic result, and it is perhaps not difficult to understand why Savall's approach has ruffled certain musicologists. Where most of the works recorded here would have probably been performed by a small group of musicians (often a cappella), in these performances there is a wide range of instruments used in addition to the voices (including shawm, cornett and sackbuts). Four tracks have 'composed' introductions [tracks 1, 4, 10, 13], whilst Narvaez's romance [track 12] is transformed from a standard example of the genre into a hybridised Hispanic-Moorish lament.

On the other hand, it is equally apparent why this group have been greeted with such unanimous international acclaim. There is, after all, a significant difference between a sound recording and a musicological article - something which is not always as obvious as it should be in some of the more "correct" renditions of this repertory. Furthermore, there are a number of tracks which are definitely plausible [tracks 5, 8, 17, 20], as well as some which frankly do not stretch extant evidence - direct and indirect - too much [tracks 4, 15, 18; a thorough and satisfactory investigation of the political villancicos and romances - tracks 7, 10, 13, 16, 18 - has yet to be undertaken...why and in what contexts would such works be performed only by small forces, given their obvious exaggerated political overtones? Would Ferdinand and Isabella really have heard, for example, Encina's lament to their dead son [18] performed by no more than four singers in the elite isolation of their private chambers...?]

But what undoubtedly sets this recording apart from so many others of this repertory is the phenomenally high standard of these performances - unsurprisingly given the personnel line-up [Begona Olavide, Montserrat Figueras, Carlos Mena, Jean-Pierre Canihac, Markus Tapio, Andrew Lawrence-King...etc]. Given that so many tracks could be singled out to support this observation - not to mention the musicians themselves - it perhaps only remains to be said that this is without doubt one of the most incredible recordings of Cancionero songs available.
