It is a mystery to me why the music of Julius Röntgen (1855-1932) isn't better known and more frequently played. In a lifetime of concert-going I've never heard a single work of his played live. Thank goodness then that the cpo record label is bringing out what appears to be the beginning of a series of recordings of his symphonic music. Röntgen, born in Germany -- his father was concertmaster of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra -- but long-resident in Holland, wrote perhaps twenty symphonies and a raft of other orchestral music. On the basis of the music recorded here I'd guess there will be an audience for it; certainly David Porcelijn and the Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz (based in Ludwigshafen am Rhein) make a convincing case for it.

The Third Symphony in C Minor (1910) is admittedly conservative for its time -- but from the distance of 100 years, what difference should that make? -- and has tints of Brahms, Schumann and even Bruckner but is in Röntgen's unique voice. He is a master orchestrator -- I particularly like his use of woodwinds and subtle brass -- and has a knack for instantly memorable melodies. There is also rhythmic inventiveness. The opening Allegro molto e passionato is Beethovenian in its breadth and urgency. The Andante is serene and lyrical but with an Elgarian tread in the lower strings. The Scherzo, marked Presto feroce, has the rhythmic insistence of a Bruckner scherzo but does not, like Bruckner, wear out its welcome or convey false bonhomie; it is indeed 'feroce'. The minor-key finale, marked 'Largamente - Allegro - Largamente' has a lengthy, portentous, even hieratic, opening succeeded by an agitated allegro with swirling strings and winds over a chorale-like main theme and with subdued but urgent brass interjections. The symphony ends with a majestic peroration that conveys a sense of hard-won but thorough triumph.

Röntgen and his first wife Amanda were fast friends of Edvard and Nina Grieg and the two couples visited back and forth frequently. Röntgen became fascinated with Norwegian folk music and folk tales. His suite 'Aus Jotúnheim' came out of that fascination. (Jotúnheim, in Norse mythology, was the home of the giants.) Written originally as a violin-piano duo as a present for the Griegs on their twenty-fifth anniversary, it was played for the Griegs by the Röntgens (Amanda was a fine violinist). That same year Röntgen orchestrated the suite. The movements do not have descriptive titles but one hears throughout a Norwegian-ness that does indeed remind one of Grieg's music. The second movement, vivo e energico, has folkdance-like verve. The fourth movement reminds one of the Hardanger fiddle music that infuses much of Grieg's (and Tveitt's) music. The fifth and last movement features a lament for violin (played lusciously here by the orchestra's unnamed Konzertmeister and later echoed by the plangent tones of the English horn) and a quiet, solemn and ineffably beautiful brass chorale. Norway's ethos is present throughout this delightful (and memorable) suite.

Recommended for lovers of late Romantic orchestral music looking for new corners of that genre to investigate.

This is an excellent first album by the artist Hyde, also know for being the lead singer in the J-rock band L'arc en Ciel. I've heard it refered to as his Angel Album. A fitting name for an album that is comprised of mostly slow songs by an artist that has discovered a bit of religion. But don't make the mistake of thinking that this is purly a Christian album or anything. And certenly don't make that mistake with his other two albums, Faith and 666. If I hadn't told you about it, you may not have noticed but only heard a hint or two in the lyrics.
The entire album is sung in english, and the last three songs that are labled "English Ensemble" are like a lounge music type version. I don't know what he was thinking with that. I'll be the first to admit that when Hyde is good he is great, but when he screws up a song, it comes out horrible. Almost the whole thing is on the GREAT side. Evergreen, Oasis, A Drop Of Colour, Shallow Sleep, Angles Tale, Secret Letter. All addicting. Sometimes it is a little difficult to understand him, but english is not a first language. The music itself more than makes up for it.
This is a fantastic album for anyone who is even a remote fan of L'arc en Ciel. You get to see what Hyde is capable of and his use of words will blow you away. His second and third albums are just as remarkable if not better.

Personally my favorite of Hyde's solo albums so far. More than worth the price for any fan or L'Arc~en~ciel or Hyde and a recommendation for anyone new to Hyde or J-Rock.

HYDE's Magic.......2006-12-27

Okay, I admit I may be biased by my love of J-rock and adoration of HYDE, but ROENTGEN is one of my favourite things to listen to. HYDE combines soft sounds with emotion to create a world all of his own. When I listen, I get swept up in this world, and find myself feeling every song like they were my feelings alone. My favourite tracks from this CD are the wistful "Shallow Sleep", the tearful "Cape of Storms" and the dark "Secret Letters".

A warning to listeners: If you enjoy this album, you may not enjoy his next albums, "666" and "Faith" unless you're a hardcore HYDE fan or a J-rock connoisseur. It has a much harder rock sound, but is enjoyable to me nonetheless.

For all of you out there who do not know who Hyde is...its a shame.Hyde's work is just all in one word ,awesome.His music makes you feel relaxed.The sounds of the instruments gives of a tingling sensation added with Hyde's delicate haunting voice.
When you listen to Roentgen,it feels almost like a dangerous adventure.My personal favorite of Hyde is "Angels Tale","The Cape of Storms" and from his past album "Horizon" Buy his Album!!!...You'll regret it if you don't.(and plus he's cute too...)

A great CD available for $18 to $28 not $40+.......2003-10-15

I think that this is a really great CD that showcases Hyde's voiced particulally well. I heartily recommend it to all those J pop listeners out there. Well I'm not sure Hyde is pop, but hey he's great. Anyway also I would like to let you know that although Amazon no longer has this CD for sale it is around out there for example at YesAsia.com and CDJapan, for the prices listed above. Don't go and pay more than they are worth to people who are trying to just steal away your hard earned cash. Instead encourage respectable businessmen. Amazon should be ashamed to let people sell stuff on here at x2price.

Okay..i LOVE hyde-kun, so therefore i'm yeling "Bonzai!!" to his first solo english album, Roentgen! The songs are beautiful, and hyde-kun's english is not too bad either. I love the tracks Shallow Sleep and Evergreen the most. Even the US cover is better than the Japanese one! ...this CD screams "BUY ME!!"

I am a great fan of L`Arc~en~Ciel. Hyde's solo album is excellent! Such Beautiful Music. I would recommend the japanese version as well as the english one. The songs are the same on both albums but vary in the way they sound. I LOVE HYDE!! And Gackt too. ^_~ oh yeah, I can't wait for Gackt/Hyde movie "Moon Child" to come out!

Brilliant!.......2002-08-14

Hyde is still the vocalist for L'arc-en-ciel, a great Japanese pop/rock band, but shows is prowess as a solo artist as well. Each composition seems to live and breathe and shows soul. A very moving work.
Much of this CD is in English and is very well written.

Melodic, strong, and sexy!.......2002-04-03

This is Hyde's first album since he's gone solo (he used to be L'Arc-en-Ciel's vocalist). I must say that the songs are quite different from those of L'Arc-en-Ciel's, most probably because they are all Hyde's composition rather than a compilation of all the band's members. Rather using lots of electric guitars, this album relies heavily on the strings and orchestral arrangement to strike a strong, emotional, and artistic tone. Hyde's powerful, sexy voice continues to hipnotize the listeners, bringing them into his world of mysterious yet charming persona.
The limited edition comes in a very artistic case design, so it's really worth buying if you're a L'Arc-en-Ciel's or Hyde's fan as it will become a precious collectible item.
