Youssou N'Dour, a superstar at home in Senegal and in most of Africa, possesses an astonishingly strong and supple high-tenor voice, and he writes tuneful, insightful songs about his fellow West Africans' transition from isolated rural villages to cosmopolitan big cities. The Guide (Wommat) includes several calculated enticements to lure an Anglo-American audience: a bilingual duet with hip-hop star Neneh Cherry on "Seven Seconds," a guest appearance by saxophonist Branford Marsalis on "Without a Smile," and a bilingual version of Bob Dylan's "Chimes of Freedom." The Marsalis and Dylan experiments work, while the Cherry one doesn't, but they're superfluous to the main focus of the album, which is N'Dour's shift from a bandleader to a singer-songwriter with a backing band. The infectious mbalax rhythms of Senegal are still there, but they're pushed down in the mix so the focus is on N'Dour's vocals. There are some missteps, like the simple-minded cheerleading of "Tourista" and "Love One Another," but for the most part N'Dour comes across as the Stevie Wonder of West Africa. --Geoffrey Himes

Peter and the Wolf Howls!!!!.......2007-07-28
Husband of Natalie, ADS, Studio City, CA
Great telling of a classic story as a classical music introduction.......2007-01-04
Peter is clearly presented as a child who is disobedient and mildly punished for it, but then he is also brave and resourceful in fixing the situation he has caused. Finally is also merciful to the wolf (although he does put the wolf in a zoo, if that really bothers you). So the story has some subtle hints at morality without it being too oppressive.
In this CD version, the narration is clear and the pacing seems very adequate for even 2 year-old's attention. They often ask to hear it again, and they love the picture book I bought to go with it - see another review. They know all the instruments names, and can identify the characters just from hearing the music.
Excellent for kids and adults.......2006-11-04

My son's discovery of classical music.......2003-05-17
Oddly enough, I never really knew this story or I don't remember it from my childhood, but once my dear sweet boy discovered it's haunting and charging sound, it's become a staple in my vehicle.
A perfect way to introduce classical music to any child -- tell them a story and have all the parts of the story be different instruments from an orchestra. Beautiful, just beautiful..

Could be better.......2007-03-29
Surprised at how wonderful this is -- a huge hit!.......2007-03-18
It is high quality and pleasant to the ears. We play it whenever we are in the car. The narratives in "Peter and the Wolf" and "Carnival of the Animals" are very engaging and hold their attention. At home, my 6 yr. old sits at the dinner table and recites the entire narrative (along with the appropriate tune representing the characters) of Peter and the Wolf -- complete with Bernstein's accent! Great memory/recitation exercise and he does it voluntarily. My two year old asks for it EVERY TIME we're in the car and many times my 1 1/2 yr. old is fussy until we turn it on, then she's as content as can be.
All the kids have picked out characters to "be" in Peter and the Wolf and have assigned them to Mom and Dad. It's a lot of fun. My 2 yr. old always calls out when the cat comes along, "That's me!!" and my 1 1/2 yr. old always says, "Correct!" just before Bernstein does. The littlest to the oldest listen intently and engage with the narrator.
The last piece is my personal favorite, as it introduces each instrument in the orchestra and how it all fits together, and the music is beautiful (the kids like the music too, but prefer "Peter..."). My 6 yr. old has learned a lot from the last piece without realizing it; when I explain instruments of music we hear elsewhere, he calmly informs me, "I know that, Mom."
This fascination with the CD has lasted a long time; we did not just start listening to it last week. I think that reflects on how enjoyable it is for the whole family. My husband has told me repeatedly how glad he is we bought this. It is also a good buy here on Amazon -- I paid several dollars more for it.

Try high quality speakers.......2007-07-08
I tried it out recently on a higher quality system with expensive speakers. It may just be me, but it has the effect of percodan or loritab (pain medication).
Something about her voice, on the high end speakers multiplies the effect of relaxing me, even as I'm sitting up with eyes open. On my $100 stereo it's nothing special although still my favorite.
didn't like so don't listen to it.......2006-11-09
It just plain works!!.......2006-10-07
I can still have problems staying asleep (insomnia and mild sleep apnea) but that's another issue.
My wife has a bunch of Wendi Freisen CDs which absolutely do not work for me. Where Wendi's voice grates and annoys, Doreen's voice is, "like buttah".
Highly recommended.
Sweet sleep!.......2006-08-25

Most good, this one..not so good.......2007-07-28
The quality of some of the dubs have been degrading, and blending in noise that just shouldn't be there.
Overall MOS albums rock, and are the best way to get every flavor your looking for.
This one in my opinion, needs to be off the books... There were only about 4 songs off of 2 CD's that were really mainstream and upbeat. The rest were strange almost alternative songs that had me constantly fast forwarding through.
If your looking for a high energy feel good album, skip this one.
Hed Kandi Beach House 2007 goes well after this compilation.......2007-07-23
Do not buy the US version of any Ministry of Sound compilation as the track listing may differ significantly. I rather pay extra for the import version.

Most Chosen Selections.......2006-03-13
If you're planning a traditional or formal wedding on a budget, this cd has it all. There are even two selections of Wagner's "Wedding March" to choose from. Only two of the selections have vocals, the rest are all extraordinary instrumental selections.
Often, even around the house or in my car, I find myself listening to this cd. The music is soothing, refreshing, uplifting and most enjoyable. I recommend this cd over all other wedding music cd's.

Great Introduction for newer fans.......2007-04-22
It's Impossible.......2006-12-02
Just like the music itself is impossible to categorize or pigeonhole, and because the King Crimson muse has evolved so extensively over the decades, efficient collection becomes nearly impossible too. As mentioned above, this release does contain many of the most "collectible" tracks from all the various phases of the twisted and adventurous King Crimson saga (I'm partial to the John Wetton era myself). But in the attempt at "representativeness," the selections can't help but appear arbitrary and obligatory, with the related problem of abridgement for certain tracks that were deemed useful but too long to cram into the few spare minutes available on these two discs. But of course, anyone interested in the history of progressive rock, from late-60s jazzy orchestrations to modern industrialized walls of sound, must be aware of King Crimson and their heavily challenging (and increasingly influential) music. This compilation gets the job done for the innocent bystander, but save your pennies for all the original albums that you'll want to start buying real soon. [~doomsdayer520~]
Finally, The Essential KC.......2006-11-10
Released to the wide indiference of the public, this album is anyway important for two reasons: it provides the ultimate guide to *all* phases of the band in it's 35-year history, in a reasonably priced package; and, it's bound to become the source of reference for new prog fans seeking the influences of groups like Mastodon, Tool, Mars Volta and such.
Having gems like "Epitaph" (1969), "Sailor's Tale" (1971), "Fracture" (1974), "Frame by Frame" (1981), "Dinosaur" (1995) and "Level Five" (2003) on one album is great, and without having to spend big bucks on boxed sets or collecting the original records.
Another aspect that makes this special is that Crimson is one of the very few bands from its generation to remain consistently influential and innovative; something shown here by the fact that the closing material (from 2003's "The Power to Believe") is some of the stongest.
The artwork is nice (following the template of the "21st Century Guide..." boxed sets) with a booklet covering all lineups, with the usual vintage pics, press clippings and a condensed Fripp narrative. And the sound is excellent too (all tracks are taken from their respective 30th Anniversary Series remasterings).
Many previous KC compilations have featured edits, and this one is no exception, but they're better handled than usual. Only a beginning refrain is cut form "Fracture" while the whole legendary 'motto perpetuo' section is preserved; but on the flipside "In the Court of the Crimson King" has Ian McDonald's beautiful flute solo cut out while the whole rather silly coda is retained. "Larks...I" is heavily edited but still flows very well, but "Starless" is again just the ballad beginning.
Some not-so-surprising abscenses are 'Lizard' and 'ConstruKction of Light' tracks ("Cirkus" would have been nice, but I won't miss TCOL at all). Some truly missed classic are "Larks...II" (maybe because the live versions have always been so superior), "The Great Deceiver", "The Night Watch", "Easy Money", "Exiles", "Indiscipline", "One Time", etc. But even then, there are a lot of tracks to enjoy since both CDs are packed to their limit.
What you won't find here are live tracks, ProjeKct tracks, rare tracks, unreleased stuff, Collectors Club stuff, etc. This compilation is meant purely as a guide through the studio catalog.
If this isn't enough for you, you can follow with the full '21st Century Guide' boxed sets, the 30th Anniversary Series individual releases, the archival live albums, the DGM download store and such; but as a handy collection of essential tracks, this album is unbeatable.-

Rhythms on Parade, a revised and expanded version of an earlier album, is one of Palmer's most inspired collections. Catchy tunes encourage kids to sing, play, and march along, while Palmer skillfully uses pitch, tempo, and rhythm to reinforce his lyrics. In "Roller Coaster," for instance, tempo and pitch vary to conjure an image of a roller coaster slowly climbing a hill and then rushing down the other side. Palmer sounds comfortable using a wide variety of sounds (including a children's chorus, percussion, keyboards, strings, and woodwinds) in a number of styles (ballads, jitterbugs, and country, among others), which should delight most any child. Rhythms on Parade is an easily accessible study of rhythm that will leave both parent and child humming long after the music stops. --Tami HoriuchiAlbum Description

Vibrant Vocals and Versatile Vibes from Vietnam.......2007-07-15
Speaking of the compiler, Paul Fisher's liner notes are well-written and do the job nicely of introducing each performer and singer while contextualizing and placing the music within the overall musical culture of Vietnam--no stuffy musicological details, just the right amount of background so that the listener can pretty much know and appreciate what's playing. And the tracks are introduced in the order that they appear on the CD (a common sense arrangement that some Rough Guide CDs have gotten a bit too fancily experimental with), so it's easy to follow along with the music--at least the first time, and with this music, it'll be the first time of many!
