5 out of 5 stars One of the great virtuosos of our time.......2006-01-05

And here I thought this CD was my personal discovery! What a surprise to find 20 reviews...but, OK...I'm glad.
I can't understand any comparison to Munir Bashir - Shamma's virtuosity is of a whole different order. Each note seems to have its own attack and dynamic. And his collection of "extended techniques" places him solidly in the late '20th century. Bashir is much more humble and unassuming. Sometimes I feel that Shamma approaches the overelaborated. But even if it's a bit calculated, the calculations are on a genius level. And the orphanage piece touches the heart AND the mind, on so many levels.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT ALBUM--exquisite musical heritage of Iraq.......2005-07-09

What wonderful music comes from Baghdad and Iraq in general. It truly was the seat of artistic and musical sophistication. Just listen to these esquisite sounds to see what I mean.

5 out of 5 stars The Epitome of Iraqi Sadness is Nassir's Music..........2004-08-20

I had met Nassir a long time ago during the first Iraq War and listened to him play. He cries with his oud; or it cries for him. This collection is an embodiment of what we as a people have suffered under wars, sanctions and more wars...
Nassir traces his steps into the depth of Iraqi culture. He brings up characters in Iraqi history and makes them talk to each other, and if you knew the names, you heard the talk, and you understood.
In the piece on Ameria -called Ameria, a shelter which was hit by a US missile causing the tragic death by 'boiling' to some 400 Iraqi women and children, you can hear the children play. It's peaceful and quiet and then the air-raid sirens kick in, and it is painful...I cry when this piece approaches that part...You can then hear the swirling missile, the rush and panic of humans that seems endless, and then the lamentation...That is slow and agonizing. Peace dawns again, and you hear the Muezzin (the call for prayer), and it seems to drag you into calm, and finally, the joyful march of the martyrs to heaven...You can hear them as they ascend.
The music is rare and beautiful...What more can I say...

5 out of 5 stars correction of information.......2003-09-21

Hi there all , i regret that i did not listen to the CD mentioned above for it is not available in the place i live in , but there is a comment i would like to add about al-amiryiah , it is not an orphanage as one of the reviewer said , actually it was a nuclear shultter in al amiriya block in Baghdad , and it has been bombed by the Americans during the 1991 war and since it was a nuclear sheltter then the Americans had to get it's plans at that time to manufacture a special drilling bomb to be able to reach to the core and explode , the incidence killed more than 400 Iraqies most of them were women and children and the excuse was that they had information that Saddam Hussein was their at that time ... !!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars nice release from Silva.......2005-08-15

As with most of the recent Silva America releases, Silva Screen has compiled older recordings from previous CDs and added some new material exclusively for this release. In this case, Silva has recorded music from The first Harry Potter and Lord of The Rings films, both Mummy films and Gladiator. I'm not sure what else is new, but combine these excellent tracks with golden age material from Hermann and Rozsa, and some Elfman (Batman, Edward Scissorhands) and Williams (Raiders of the Lost Ark, Witches of Eastwick) for good measure, you have a heckuva compilation.

The performance is first rate with only the Raiders March being a subpar track.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Fantasy Scores from Hit Fantasy Movies.......2003-04-05

If you're looking for some fantasy role-playing game backround music to play or just like mostly classical fantasy-esque music, this double CD contains excellent scores wrapped in whopping total of 140+ minutes worth of music.

Classic music from your favorite hit fantasy and action movies are found all over this huge, quality collection. You'll hear suites and sounds from outstanding films like Lord of the Rings, Gladiator, Willow, The Mummy, Harry Potter, Excalibur, Conan, Highlander, Batman, Edward Scissorhands and more.

A recent (2002) and impressive collection of musical scores, and by far the best CDs I've personally bought for fantasy themed music.

5 out of 5 stars "successful formula from Silva spells Classic all the way".......2002-09-24

History repeats itself with this latest compilation from Silva Screen "Fantasy Album:Adventure & Fantasy at the Movies", a heap of music to digest within the twenty-eight tracks. All beautifully arranged and conducted by Paul Bateman and Nic Raine with the City Of Prague Orchestra in full force...with the helping hand of David Temple (choir master) of the Crouch End Festival Chorus. A perfect blend from brew master James Fitzpatrick(producer) who has impeccable foresight and taste in film music.

What I most enjoy about Silva, is the fact they always have the lesser recorded selections within the big picture...take for instance "THE SEVENTH VOYAGE OF SINBAD"(1958), "THE THREE WORLDS OF GULLIVER" (1960), "MYSTERIOUS ISLAND" (1961) and "JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS" (1963), all four composed by Bernard Herrmann who is in a class by himself, they'll never be another.

But for my money the highlight picks are "GLADITOR"(2000), Hans Zimmer's recreation of the spectacle that was Romes, with man against man, man against beast and the armies that clashed and fell under the powerful story that unfolds within this suite from the film ~ "BEETLEJUICE", "EDWARD SCISSORHANDS" and "BATMAN", each from the films of Tim Burton still ring true within the realm of great direction and storytelling, this can only be topped by composer Danny Elfman who adds the frosting to an appetizing treat ~ "LEGEND" (1985), can faeries, goblins, woodland spirits mix well with the Lord of Darkness...only the legendary Jerry Goldsmith can conjure up a tune to drive the entire cast into a frenzy with "FARIE DANCE/REUNITED", this is the stuff nightmares are made of with a happy ending of course.

With composers like Tan Dun, Randy Edelman, Danny Elfman, Jerry Goldsmith, Bernard Herrmann, James Horner, Maurice Jarre, Michael Kamen, Brian May, Jerome Moross, Carl Orff, Basil Poledouris, Miklos Rozsa, Howard Shore, Alan Silvestri, John Williams and Hans Zimmer...one can only hope this will last forever. Silva, I don't know how you do it, but keep them coming...gotta love it!

Captured on this one disc are the great film scores Bernard Herrmann did for several classic science fiction films of the '50s and '60s. Herrmann did not go in for simple atmospherics and cheap orchestral tricks with his music. He knew that the music would have to conjure a mental world all its own. This is especially true in "The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad". It's a tone poem Rimsky-Korsakov could have written. The best here is "The Day the Earth Stood Still" with its use of the (then) revolutionary theremin. It's a clear masterpiece, all on its own. --Paul Cook

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The other essential Herrmann CD.......2004-08-25

I like to think of this CD as being the "Forbidden Planet" of film scores CDs -- technically marvelous, consistently enthralling on an emotional and mental level, and way ahead of its time.

Unfortunately it is not available as I write this. Last time I visited this Amazon site, there was one CD for sale for almost $60. You'll have to make up your own mind if this music is worth that much to you. I made my choice long ago to own this and keep it in my library, conceivably forever.

With five film scores, 35 tracks and 72 minutes of the most high grade science fiction music, this CD should be considered the definitive source for Bernard Herrmann's non-Hitchcock film scores. Not only did he conduct the National Philharmonic Orchestra in these recordings, the composer approved of the Phase 4 recording and mixing. It is, as the notes say, a unique listening experience.

I have found this CD to be a constant source of imagination, vision and scope in film music that still has no peer 30 years after its production. The opening sequence to "Journey To The Center of the Earth" is better than it ever was in the theater, where the music was a hackneyed backdrop to an incredilbe film. In this CD, the music dwarfs the film action.

My favorite sequence in this issue is Herrmann's work for the Ray Bradbury novella "Fahrenheit 451", which was recast in some minds recently when "Fahrenheit 911" appeared in theaters throughout the country.

Every bit of the miracle of that little film is projected through this eerily wonderful music, which seems to comprise a world of its own. The sections help recall Sontag's first trip on the fire engine, the bedroom fire and the finale.

The lengthiest tract on this disk is the near 27 minute set from the film "Gulliver's Travels". I've never seen the movie but will attest that the music is out of this world in a very British way. This section seems closer to following the musical rules for a suite than any other on this disk.

Decca had the good sense to return the Bernard Herrmann-conducted Hitchcock scores to circulation, so maybe they will do the same with this miraculous disk. Again, the notes are nothing to write home about, but even with that considered no lover of film music or the music of Bernard Herrmann can consider their library complete without this disk.

5 out of 5 stars One Soldier knows.......2007-07-20

I may have not been on the front lines, but I have my share of emotional scars caused by the war. When I first heard this album about a year ago, I immediately drifted back off to Iraq. I could see the sand, feel the heat and smell the air (the air has a very distinctive smell, of dirt, feeces and blood). At least thats the way it smells to me. This is truly a accurate depiction of what happens down range (Iraq). The song titled "holding my breath" is extrodinary...hand claps and bows to the artist.

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2007-07-07

These guys were in country after I was so I never saw them live. Honestly I really don't like Hip-Hop, rap or any of that stuff, but this CD is great! I listened to ever word and for a Iraqi Vet this thing really hits home. I would like to say thanks to these guys for telling people out there our story, when the media won't and the US citizen doesn't support us either.

5 out of 5 stars Gritty and Enthralling.......2007-01-12

This album is stunning. Although the beats could be more imaginative by studio standards, the fact that 4th25 wrote and recorded this in theater is astonishing. The story that they have to tell is also amazing and one that I love hearing over and over again. Not only is the music great, the group also uses most of their revenue to help out fellow soldiers. I love this group and highly anticipate their next album, because this one was a excellent piece of work.

5 out of 5 stars Buy this album now!.......2006-06-28

This album is dope and really tells a story about war you never hear in the media or from the mouths of the administration. These guys are the hardest American rappers ever. They make Tupac(RIP) sound like Tweety Bird.

5 out of 5 stars Good first album.......2006-06-05

Hey I was with these guys when they did this album. It sounds pretty good with the equipment they had and where they made it at. Everything they talk about is true and straight from the heart. Anyone that wants to hear someone rap about real and not petty "my block" beef pick this album up.

5 out of 5 stars My own life is behind these recordings.......2007-06-10

I can assure that one of the reason I love music is due to these recordings of Mr. Stokowsky. My father had the record of Scherezade and, though my father was an ignorant about cultivated music, he knew very well what to appreciate. We never argued when I played Beethoven's first symphony so loud, however, he always did when I played Rolling Stones so loud. I adore that he taught me to appreciate Rimsky-korsakov's music as well as Tchaikovsky's Capriccio Spagnolo so young. He was wise, on his way. I can't help to cry for him, listening to Borodin's Palatsovian dances, because, it is great music, and, having into account that I used to love it by Mr. Stokowsky's work, it doubles my crying and my remembrance. He loved the record so much. I love you, daddy.

4 out of 5 stars Don't go for broke unless you're a die-hard Stokowski fan.......2006-09-22

When Stokowski began to make Phase 4 recordings for Decca in 1964, he was already 82, but he hadn't lost his energy or his tendency to shape music in outlandish ways. I mostly love him, but this box set duplicates recordings that can be found on the Cala label, which has been releasing everything Stokowski in the world, and on Decca single CDs if you go to the used market.

I mention this because the whole box set, Vol. 2 in the Original Masters series, continas some forgettable performances, in particular the rhythmically slack Beethoven Sym. 5 and 7, the over-highlighted Schubert 'Unfinished,' and a live Brahms First that seems manic and forced too much of the time. However, if you think of Stokowski having little to offer in the German classics, here is an exceptional Beethoven Ninth, one of the best things from his late career and wonderful in every way.

Decca knows that the crowd-pleasers are the gaudy, multi-miked Phase 4 versions of Scheherazade, as bombastic as you could imagine, and lots of Russian fare, including Stoki's signature synthesis from Boris Godunov. The 1812 Over., by the way, isn't over the top and yet needed to be. Finally, this German-Russian collection contains a thrilling disc of Wagner excerpts, much of it grossly over-miked, but at its core containing very impressive, vital interpretations.

In all, I'd select the Wagner, the Beethoven Ninth, and the legendary Scheherazade as the best things here. Buy them separately or take the plunge for this whole box, your choice.

5 out of 5 stars More Sensational Stokowski.......2005-06-08

It took me a while to purchase this six-disc set in UNI's "Original Masters" series, but I finally did this past weekend. Classical music fans seem to either love or hate Leopold Stokowski (I, of course, love him), and unfortunately much of "Decca Recordings 1964-75, Volume 2" will be old news to serious devotees of the conductor. While I'm not familiar with the complete Decca back-catalog, at least three full discs worth of material have been previously available in the old "Weekend Classics" series -- Beethoven's 5th & 7th, Beethoven's 9th, and the Wagner selections. (I'm pretty sure the Rimsky-Korsakov material on disc five, and the Tchaikovsky and Mussorgsky pieces on disc six have been issued prior too.) This is good news for those who came to collecting classical CDs late (like me) because while the Wagner is still available individually, the Beethovens have been fetching absurd prices in the Amazon Marketplace. The only material receiving its first international release is contained on disc 3 -- a Schubert "Unfinished" with the London Philharmonic from 1969 and a rousing live performance of the Brahms 1st with the London Symphony on the occasion of the conductor's 60th anniversary leading that body. The original instruments crowd will surely turn up their noses at these legendary performances, but me, I'll just sit back and listen to some more sensational sounding Stokowski.

Album Description

The Capitol Steps, the only group in America that attempts to be funnier than Congress, is a troupe of current and former Congressional staffers who monitor events and personalities on Capitol Hill, in the Oval Office, and in other centers of power and prestige around the world - then take a humorous look at serious issues while providing a nationwide laugh for millions...

This group puts the "mock" in democracy, always topical to the news of the day!

I got this CD for my birthday and I just love it to death! I particularly enjoyed Green Green Grass at Home, Help Rwanda, Ain't No Surplus, Now It's Gone, I Want A Guy, Cows Gone Mad, and Lirdy Dies. The best part is, this isn't a bunch of liberals makeing fun of Republicans, or vice versa. They take shots at both sides. All they need is Lewis Black for the comedy bits. Buy this today!!!!!
