Everyone that comes over I've turned them onto my Noite De Morabeza CD...everyone loves it young and old. Agua is my favorite song. Boy Ge Mendes has a jazzy sensual style of singing to Latin, jazzy, blues and African music all rapped up in one. I'm Cape Verdean-American and I'm just getting into Cape Verdean music, ever since my niece gave me Cesaria Evora's Sao Vicente CD for Christmas yr 2000. Now I look for Cape Verdean music. I love Boy Ge Mendes, I would love to see him in concert here in the U.S.

If you love jazz and the beauty of Cape Verdean music, you will be in heaven. Mendes also works with other musical influences. But none of it is contrived; he makes it work. As an American of Cape Verdean descent, but with strong ties to Cape Verde and its culture, I feel as if he is writing for me--for those of us who live in two worlds, the children of the Cape Verdean diaspora. And, at the same time, his work, like all great work, will speak to everyone. Enjoy!

Listening Boy Ge Mendes was my first experience with music from Cabo Verde. I was highly surprised with this CD. It's incredible the music form Mendes, great chords and smooth voice that transports you to a beautiful Cabo Verde places. A must have CD.

Wonderful undertones of both Brazilian and Sahelian African rhythms. The music is as smooth as honey, and transposes you to floating in the middle of a calm, breezey bay in a dugout fishing canoe. Parabens Geh!

Second Time Around Almost As Good As The First Time..........2000-04-12

Very little, if any, dropoff from Mendes' first US release, Lagoa. This, too, is a wonderful album and one wonders about those eight CD's that have never been released to the US market. Evora gets all of the publicity but Mendes is right there. Compelling music...always changing...beautiful voice...beautiful music.

A MASTERPIECE! Transcends cultures and musical styles........2000-04-11

I sampled Boy's album "Lagoa" on-line, liked it and was even more pleased as I listened to it on my system. As outstanding as it was, I am truly astounded and thrilled by "Noite de Morabeza". It's an absolute lyrical and musical masterpiece transcending labels and musical genre. The lyricism and fluid, evocative textures of these compositions elicit what in Portuguese may be expressed as "saudade do Cabo Verde" (yearning for Cape Verde). The musical depth of this opus should, if there is poetic justice in the music industry, propel Boy into the recognition and appreciation that a world class artist deserves. Even the wonderful photographs and liner notes stir one's imagination and evoke an image of "Shambalah" (one of the songs on this cd). One can only be jaded beyond help to not enjoy this remarkable work.

Beautiful sounds of Cape Verde. It sounds, however, like a Brazilian recording. A beautiful flow of romantic, soothing, tropical sounds. This recording artist shocked me in terms of his exquisite recording quality and the maturity and consistency of his music. Please trust me, as I listen to almost everything out there!

Great CD from Cape Verde.......2000-04-04

A great way to discover the music of the little island of Cape Verde, where Cesaria Evora also comes from. Although less known than Evora, Boy Ge Mendes is a veteran with a large number of CDs, few of which have been released in the US. A mix between Brazilian music, especially bossa and samba, and Portuguese music with a nice "World music" influence.
