About the Artist
Jack de Mello and his lush orchestrations would change the history of Hawaiian music forever. Jack recorded close to 160 albums of all types of music, including almost 500 Hawaiian songs. These songs recorded in the biggest and best studios around the world gave Hawaiian music a new identity.

Jack's talents went beyond his love for Hawaiian music. Hanna Barbera contracted Jack to compose and orchestrate music for the Flinstones, the Jetsons, Magilla Gorilla, Top Kat and Ricochet Rabbit.

Jack was recording all of this while developing the talents of Emma Veary, Nina Keali'iwahamana, Marlene Sai---most of Hawai'i recognized talents in the 50's and 60's. As the Hawaiian cultural renaissance was born in the late 60's, early 70's, Jack was discovering a new generation of musical talents; The Beamers, The Brothers Cazimero, Jon & Randy, Booga Booga. Every one of Jack's discoveries was to shape Hawaiian music in their own way. Jack demanded that his proteges be musically educated and that included his son, Jon, and he always demanded that they be passionate about what they were doing, whether it was composing, arranging, playing or singing. A great tribute to Jack is that all of his artists continue to work in the field of music and credit Jack and the habits he instilled in them with their decades-long success story.

5 out of 5 stars Brings back visit to Hawaii.......2005-12-10

I had no idea what Slack Key Guitar was until finally took the wrapper off this CD and played it. Love this CD. Very relaxing. Great backgound music-can let it play all day. Brings back the memories of our visit to Hawaii.

5 out of 5 stars I judge all my other slack key cds against this one..........2000-06-02

Bought it on May 17. Ended up buying 11 (and counting) other slack key music cds. But still my favorite overall. I can't sing, but do want to learn to play slack key, so this instrumental cd of solo (no other instrument) slack key inspires me. You will not go wrong buying this one!

The mellow performances match my personality, and bring to mind images of balmy breezes and swaying trees.

I've been looking for another instrumental cd of solo slack key performances, but have yet to find one that matches this one...except maybe Ozzie Kotani's, and Ledward Kaapana's live CD.

If you are wanting to play slack key, listen to this one and hear what can be achieved, without being distracted by other instruments.

Na Leo is a staple in Hawaiian Music. With the release of "I Miss You My Hawai'i" they once again showcase their amazing musical and vocal capabilities. While most of the songs featured on the album are sung in English, there are a few in Hawaiian, which are enjoyable even if you don't know the language. A great album to remind both locals and visitors of the beauty and majesty of the Islands.

I first heard this group while on vacation in Hawaii. They have excellent harmonies and timing. I miss Hawaii every time I hear the title song (my favorite on the album). I also like "Hawaiia Eyes" and "Diamond Head Daydream". The only song I didn't much care for was "Hanau 'O Kekauluohi"

5 out of 5 stars Great Hawaiian music.......2007-05-15

Keali'i Reichel captures the traditional sounds of Hawaii and adds a nice contemporary, easy listening blend. He brings traditional chants, ballads and folk songs to the present creating new meaning and importance to the music and words.
His Hawaiian is easy to understand, pleasant to listen to and soothing to the ear.
Every song on this album seem to have a special meaning to Keali'i and to the listener.

    5 out of 5 stars E O Mai is very Hawaiian.......2006-02-17

While on the Pride of Aloha in Hawaii, I enjoyed the music of Keali'i Reichel being played on board the ship.
Very mellow and peaceful and some favorite American songs added. Keali'i Reichel will sing in English with some songs and in Hawaiian in others. It has a nice mix to it all.
I have all his CD's so that I can continue to listen to Reichel over and over. I highly recommend any of Reali'i Reichel's work.

5 out of 5 stars An excelent release, as usual........2005-08-30

This is Keali'i's third album, released in 1997. The title track is one of the most perfect songs to listen to when you need to go to sleep at night. I could listen to Keali'i sing all night and I wouldn't get tired of it. If you like Iz, you'll love Keali'i Reichel. One of my other favorites on this CD is "Nematoda" with Kekuhi Kanahele. As always, many Hawaiian songs and chants are included as well as some English. Get this one, and get all of his other ones! You will not be disappointed in the least!

5 out of 5 stars Kealii Is the best........2004-01-25

What I like about Kealii is his voice. He has a very controlled and very pretty singing style. When he sings he has a very relaxing feeling which makes his listeners addicted. If you love Hawaiian style music you'll certainly enjoy Kealii Reichel. :)

5 out of 5 stars The Sighing Waters of Kahualoa.......2003-03-10

I have bought all 4 of his CD's and seen his last four tours. He is the only solo artist to sell out all shows in Maui every year. He is a perfectionist who as a hula Kumu, teacher, establishes great flow to his beautiful music. His voice is an smooth as silk.

I think this is his best CD and one of the most emotional. It is very serene and relaxing collection of chants and melodies with the best being "E O Mai", "Pua Hinano" and "Ka 'Ano'i Pua O Uka".

5 out of 5 stars Another CD you've got to have!.......2005-08-30

This is Keali'i's second release. It features cover versions of Bette Midler's "Every Road Leads Back to You" and Elton John's "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" from The Lion King. "Every Road Leads Back to You" is a duet with contemporary Hawaiian artist Robi Kahakalau. Keali'i's versitility, in other words how well he can sing different genres of music, comes across in "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" and "Stay." As usual, Hawaiian songs and chants are also included. As someone wrote in "Keali'i Reichel Voice of an Angel," "Lei Hali'a is beyond stunning. It is utterly chiiiiicken skeeeeen!" I agree completely.

    5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Album Reminiscent of Hawai'ian Culture.......2004-06-13

    Dear Amazonians,

It has been a number of years since I had been to Hawai'i, but by listening to Keali'i Reichel's soothing voice, I am able to return in spirit to this magical place.

Hawai'i is a wonderful and interesting place, full of lush forests and wildlife. The music on this CD brings back memories of how much I enjoyed being in Hawai'i.

Keali'i Reichel sings mostly love songs, in the traditional Hawaiian language. These songs are much more heartfelt, emotional, and expressive than any that are sung in English. One of my favorites is "Toad Song" which tells of a toad who is sitting in a bog calling out for a mate. It is sung in rhyme, and is very tender and humorous.
I highly recommend any of Keali'i Reichel's albums, especially Kawaipunahele, a very original album that highlights his extensive talent.

Keali'i Reichel is doing us a tremendous service by preserving the Hawaiian language, and donating a portion of his proceeds to programs that educate young children in Hawai'i about their cultural roots, so that the spirit of Hawai'i can live on through its children.

If you have been to Hawai'i in the past, or even if you have never travelled to this magical place, Lei Hali'a will transport you far from where you are, to a serene environment where you will feel at peace with yourself.

    All the Best,

    --Daniel

Aloha Mai, this is one of Keali'i's best. Lei hali'a means a lei of sudden remembrance which is a figurative way of saying nogastalgia in Hawaiian. I highily recomend this cd. You will not regret it!

I recently returned to Hawai'i after being married there during the Viet Nam war 33 years ago, and more than anything this gentle voice allows me to view his homeland with appreciation and understand what is so precious about it. I listen and hum and smell the smells and taste the tastes and dream of so much I want to bring with me to my life at home. Thank you Hawai'i and Keali'i Reichel

    5 out of 5 stars A must-have for Hawaiian music lovers.......2006-03-19

If you love listening to Hawaiian music not only to hear the voice and lyrics but to feel the "heart" behind them, this is a CD you should own. In the spirit of Genoa Keawe, Gabby and Cyril Pahianui, Iz, Jerry Santos, and too many others to name, this is Hawaiian music, mostly from the 80's and 90's, that conveys a strong sense of place and people. His track, "All Hawai'i Stand Together" was listed on Wikipedia's webpage of protest songs and is powerful enough to move people to action.

5 out of 5 stars More Great Pavao.......2003-07-19

I bought my first Pavao CD (Sweet Leilani) beccuase it contained the most beautiful rendition of Aloha Oe I'd ever heard. While I bought the CD for that one track, the entire CD was outstanding, so I decided to buy more of his work. I've now got them all, except his most recent release. This is a very meaningful album; not only is the music beautiful, but if you take the time to listen to the words of the songs, they are most poignant. The words of "All Hawaii Stands Together" tell a great story, and the tune of his song "Holei" rivals "Aloha Oe" as being one of the most beautiful songs ever penned. Most tragically, Dennis Pavao died of a brain aneurism in Jan '02. While he has passed from this earth, his magnificent voice remains, captured forever on his CDs. If you love the Islands like I do, this and all his albums will bring goosebumps to your arms and tears to your eyes.

5 out of 5 stars Aloha Nui Loa.......2000-05-01

Pehea `oe? Oia mau no. `O Ka`ano`i ko`u inoa. I was surprised to see that no one has reviewed this cd yet. I grew up on the island of Kaua`i on the westside, WHS Menehune. I live in the mainland now. I have a large collection of Hawaiian Cds ranging from classical to jawaiian. Dennis Pavao sings falsetto. This cd is a great representation of classical Hawaiian music. It is so beautiful to hear him sing. On this cd there are songs sung in Hawaiian and some in English. The English songs are sung with a classical aloha flavor. I couldn't do this cd justice in a review, but I'll try. In Hawaii we have a treat called shaved ice, and it comes in many flavors. Shaved ice rules on a hot day, it is so soothing. Hawaiian music is the same, because there are so many flavors/styles. And on any given day the music is soothing. I love this cd because I can remember my grandparents singing some of these songs, almost the exact same way Dennis Pavao does. Sometimes I shut my eyes, and I can see one of my grandparents singing and playing the ukulele. I don't speak Hawaiian fluently. Like most keiki my age I grew speaking english, but I am lucky to know some Hawaiian. It doesn't matter if you speak Hawaiian because the Hawaiian language is so beautiful, you'll probably feel like you know what is being said. The cover does have English translations to the Hawaiian songs, so you'll be able to see for yourself just how beautiful the songs are. If you are some one searching for the meaning of Aloha, then this cd is for you. If you are a local away from home, then this cd is for you. If you are a local that wishes you spent more time with tutulady and tutuman, then this cd is for you. My two favorite songs on this cd are: Track one "All Hawai`i Stand Together" because my grandmother used to sing this song in falsetto as well. And, Track Ten "Could I Have This Dance" because it reminds me of my grandparents. I guarantee this cd will deliver the goods. If you are new to Hawaiian music, after you buy this cd check out the other cds purchased by people who've bought this cd. Onipa`a Hawai`i. Ua mau ke ea o ka`aina i ka pono. Sorry for any typos. A Hui Hou, Ka`ano`i. A Pehea `oe Waihau? Oia mau no.

5 out of 5 stars The real deal -- ancient Hawaiian chants.......2004-12-04

Authentic, for-real, hardcore traditional hula chants, sung a capella by two brothers who were born in Honolulu but later grew up in Los Angeles. The Kanilau's were both very active in Hawaiian cultural preservation efforts, and they sing these songs with great warmth and sincerity; these recordings are probably much more accessible than other, earlier "field recording" style albums of similar material. Great liner notes, too. Worth checking out!

I listened to the 4 tracks on your site and ancient chants sound like a jazz trio. This must be a mistake

    Album Description

Music of Hawai'i, when first released, achieved a new standard of success by which all other albums would be measured in the future. Music of Jack de Mello's contributions to Hawaiian music set new standards for others to follow. Jack continues writing music and creating new techniques with the technology of today, but his history must be preserved and with digital mediums commonplace and the purest of recording techniques of past eras, Jack's son, Jon, now presents this first in a series of collectors' editions that have withstood, the test of time.

    4 out of 5 stars Hawai'i's Own.......2000-11-16

This is an anthology of richly orchestrated, impressionistic treatments of some of Hawai'i's most famous songs. Many of the tunes were composed by Hawai'i's "Ali'i" or royalty, others by local composers. You'll also find Jack de Mello's arrangements of Ken Darby's "Kalua" and Bronsilau Kaper's "Mutiny on the Bounty."

Some of the pronunciation of the 'Olelo Hawai'i (Hawaiian language) is not always as accurate as native speakers would prefer. Nevertheless, the recording offers both dazzling and often poignant arrangements of melodies that I grew up with. I am moved by the beauty of this collection and wish that other of Mr. de Mello's albums will be re-released on CD's.

Not too be overlooked is the rich beauty of the solo vocalist, Nina Keali'iwahamana, whose clear, lilting and skilled interpretations will transport the listener to our beautiful island home.

Anyone interested in finely crafted orchestral and vocal arrangements will appreciate Mr. de Mello's artistic skill. I grew up with the folk music of my Hawai'i island home and came to enjoy Mr. de Mello's work as an undergraduate music student. I still listen to this CD often and discover nuances of orchestral design each time!

5 out of 5 stars Great cross-section of Caz favorites, presented live........2005-04-19

The Cazimero Brothers, with a career spanning thirty years and three dozen Hawaiian albums, are at their best in this compilation of "live" songs (though this is not an album recorded "live" at a single concert). Recorded separately at a number of different Honolulu concerts during 1992 - 1993, these songs represent a tremendous variety of styles, including the soft, slow, romantic ballad, "Mu'olaulani," and the gorgeous harmonies of "Adios Kealoha" and "Ku'uipo I Ka He'e Pu'e One."

Haunting rhythms keep the toes tapping in "Mapuna Ka Hala O Kailua," and the brothers' reverence for the islands and its culture, reflected throughout the concert, is especially memorable in "This is Our Island," with its almost chantlike rhythms. "Green Rose Hula," an upbeat and fun-loving song, is so lively it's easy to imagine Robert Cazimero, the director of a major hula halau, suddenly abandoning his guitar and dancing the hula.

With voices which alternate between high falsetto and deep baritone, the Cazimeros set the beat and harmony with their own rhythm guitar and 12-string guitar. Backup performers add slack key guitar and percussion to the mix, as the Cazimeros give fresh interpretations to traditional Hawaiian songs. Because of their consummate musical sense and creativity, obvious here, the Brothers were nominated in early 2005 for the first Grammy Award ever awarded for Hawaiian Music. The Cazimeros are among the best and most popular of Hawaii's recording artists, and this album is the next best thing to seeing them "live." Mary Whipple
