This is Marisa Monte's first CD since 2002, and it's also the companion release to her samba-centered Universo Au Meu Redor recording. On this project, Monte reunites with her Tribalistas partners, Carlinhos Brown and Arnaldo Antunes, along with special guests including cellist Jaques Morelenbaum and pianist Joao Donato. The vibe is what you would expect from Monte: saudade-soaked lyrics with dreamy, layered synth and electric keyboards draped over Brazilian percussion and guitars. Having a baby has mellowed her out, as evidenced by the laid-back lilt on "A Prineira Pedra" and "Pra Ser Sincero" and the breezy backbeats of "Levante." "O Rio" was co-written by Seu Jorge, and the title track is what you're probably going to hear on your iPod. Clearly, there are a lot of Brazilian singers out there, but Monte's musical and emotional growth make her stand out. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

5 out of 5 stars 5 stars music on a 1 star CD.......2007-06-13

Marisa Monte's voice is as gorgeous as a woman's voice can ever hope to be and the songs in this album are beautiful. You will want to take this music everywhere with you, in your CD player and in your personal digital player.

However, EMI has made sure that it is not easy for you to use iTunes to rip the music and create AAC files for your iPod. The CD carries a Windows program to protect the music content and to restrict the ways in which you are allowed to use the content that you have paid for. Pop it in to your computer's CD drive on a Windows machine and the Autorun feature takes control. It will allow you to burn identical copies for back up (carrying the nasty program with them) or to generate WMA files at 128 kpbs encoding. EMI has made these decisions for you and only with some pain you can bypass them. Their website states that it's Apple who is at fault for not licensing their DRM to third parties. This makes this CD unusable in iTunes. This thin excuse collapses when you consider that even using Windows Media you cannot freely choose the encoding bit rate for the music you bought.

Fortunately, I discovered that I could use a Linux ripper (grip) to extract the tracks as .wav and then use them to burn a real audio CD without this abominable "copy control" program which is sold as an "enhancement" to this product. The clean audio CD is iTunes friendly and only with this gimmick you can generate the AAC files for your iPod. Shame on EMI for making me waste an hour of my time to be able to use the content I paid for in the way that is most convenient to me.

After one hour of monkey around, I finally can enjoy Marisa's beautiful music in the digital player that I own. No thanks to EMI for the hassle.

3 out of 5 stars Enjoyable........2007-01-10

A leading figure in Brazilian pop for 15 years, Marisa Monte had her biggest hit with the collaborative project "Tribalistas" (2002), and these simultaneously released albums are her first solo works since 2000.
"Universo ao Meu Redor" is the more accessible, a slightly overproduced chamber pop project casting a fond ear over more than 50 years of samba history."Universo Au Meu Redor" (The Universe Around Me) came from Monte's loving investigation of classic samba from the 1940s and '50s, which is more lyrical than the revved-up carnival version familiar to most North Americans.
For "Universo" she interviewed older samba artists and their families and collaborators, producing songs that had never been recorded and writing new ones inspired by a different musical era and ethos with which she felt much in common.

Highlights include undiscovered gems such as the instantly memorable "Meu Canario" and "Perdoa Meu Amor", with its luminous harp and cavaquinho (Brazilian ukulele) duet.
There is even a dutifully desafinado (out of tune) cameo by David Byrne on "Statue of Liberty".

Monte's other new record, "Infinito Particular" (Infinite Private) was the result of two years of cataloging and organizing 15 years of Monte's own music.
The initial goal was to digitally record work she had on paper or cassette. But it became an elaborate musical and personal journey. Monte invited several musicians, including American composer Phillip Glass, to do arrangements for a simple quartet -- cello, bassoon, violin and trumpet, seeking new sounds and new meaning from her music.
In few words, it consists of previously abandoned or finished-and-forgotten originals co-written throughout Monte's career.
Despite several slow growers, neither her extraordinary honeyed vocals, nor Alê Siqueira's inventive production, can quite distract from the sense that these are immaculately dressed off-cuts.

5 out of 5 stars Again be prepared to be transported to a celestial world.......2006-10-22

Marisa Monte has done it again with an album where all the songs are soft, clear and relaxing.

If you are into brazilian contemporary, you cannot miss Marisa Monte. As a raod warrior I carry her in my pack of cds to help me relax, order my thoughts and let go.

I would add that I did expect a bit more variation, for her voice is well adapted to every style she wishes to explore. Yet this album is quite the same in all its tone (which is not bad, but if you are new to MM better start with roses and carbon).

Since her father was a director of Portela, one of Rio's most prominent escolas de samba (samba schools -- the huge, wildly costumed gatherings of percussionists, instrumentalists, singers, and dancers that make the annual carnival so unforgettable), Brazil's most-famous export is obviously in Marisa Monte's very blood. Thus, it's surprising that she's only now gotten around to recording an album completely dedicated to the style, but happily, it's turned out to be worth the wait. She wraps her dulcet, spicy mezzo-soprano, with its clarinet-like timbre that sometimes recalls that of Gal Costa, around a well-chosen set of hip-swinging charmers, accompanied by traditional instruments like cavaquinho (a harp-like small guitar) and assorted drums and shakers long associated with the genre, plus tubas, woodwinds, strings, nostalgic Fender Rhodes organs, and, notably, the guitar of Paulinho da Viola. Songwriters of various periods are represented, including Jayme Silva from the fifties, Moraes Moreira from the 1960s, and for modern times, Carlinhos Brown and the singer herself. Hers is the kind of artistry that awes as it soothes; it draws no attention to itself yet every song flows into another like pearls on a string. Lushly sensual and suavely intimate, the lady could melt a heart of stone. --Christina Roden

The editorial and the opinion of the Glasgow reviewer describe sufficiently this blissfully mellow yet varied CD, but as there is yet only one public review, I wish to concur that it would be a worthy purchase for anyone interested in contemporary Brazilian music firmly rooted in core samba. Bryne's thankfully brief and single incursion sticks out as a bump in the road, and contributes nothing but a distraction. Monte's voice is absolutely perfect for the gentle samba, and the arrangements, for added interest, are unusually complex in instrumentation, such as tuba, marimba, bell, ukulele, harp, theremin, and basson, while dispensing with the traditional heavy drum percussion. The inventiveness and sweetness endures through repeated listening (8 times already!). Great dinner and evening music. Buy it! 4 and 1/2 stars, actually, because of that Byrne blip.

This album is beautiful (except track 8). My favorite Brazilian music CD of all time.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful Effort -- Failed Concept.......2007-01-15

Marisa Monte is the biggest star of Brazilian music on the international scene. With Gilberto Gil elevated to cultural minister of the country (gov. ministers don't really release groundbreaking music anymore) and Milton Nascimento mushing out over the recent years, she gets the crown.

And she deserves it. This is a gorgeous CD. Beautifully sung, beautifully arranged, this is mesmerizing music created by musicians who want to break out of the musical categories of MPB today.

But if this is a CD to resurrect the old samba style --and I am assuming that it is from its promotion -- then it falls on the sword of its pretensions. And dies. But before, it does gasp out some good music.

That is why it gets 4 stars. Marisa Monte is so good that even when she does deliver the goods, she gets 4 stars.

If you know Marisa, I would say buy this! But if you don't have any CDs by Marisa Monte, buy some earlier ones. This CD is not an introduction.

The first track is a newly composed work by Marisa and Carlinhos Brown. They open with an old radio off-air transmission and then Marisa sings so beautifully and seductively.

but the second track sounds a lot like the first, and easly treads the same melodic trough. And so on and on. Barely one-third of the tracks are really old songs. The rest is recomposed. It sounds like Marisa, Carlinhos Brown and crew are coasting on the backs of the great old samba guys.

But wait. There are some real gems. The third track, Meu Canario, by Jayme Silva from 1950, is a minor masterpiece and my favorite. It's beautiful and a perfect example of the sad samba sounding upbeat -- it just speaks the soul of Brazilian samba. And Brazilian music and the Brazilian soul. (Perdoa, meu amor, perdoa, is the oldest piece of music on the CD (1945) and these two tracks would easily make this a CD to own.)

I wished Marisa had performed this song with Jayme Silva. Where is he? This CD is supposed to be about lost music. He might be dead now. That makes sense. OK, but where are the liner notes about these great old, lost composers of samba? Nada. It's just sort of thrown out there.

But at least this booklet has English translations of all the Brazilian lyics. A good sign.

Paulinho da Viola has composed and performed a track here. Interesting and another reason to own this CD. Da Viola was the first musician to go back into the old samba schools and save this music. Marisa Monte followed his example with an album in 1999. Marisa sang with the old guard (velha guarda da Portela) to fantastic effect. Unfortunately this album was never released in the USA.

I was hoping that this CD would be her expansion on that work for a wider audience. But it is not. It has beautiful spots. Overall, though, this sounds like a vanity project.

Brazilian superstar Monte's fifth album is arguably her most daring yet, as she makes her art-pop leanings more explicit than ever. Memories is also her most beautiful and sensual disc; while it doesn't easily fit a radio format, it nevertheless begs the question of why Monte isn't better known in the States. --Rickey Wright

Amazon.com Music Reviews

Marisa Monte, one of the strongest voices of Brazilian popular music, has one of the sweetest and most seductive voices you'll ever hear. But since the early 1990s, she's kept close ties with the downtown New York scene, connecting with people like David Byrne, guitarist Marc Ribot (who guests here), and producer Arto Lindsay, who's behind the board again for this record of romantic songs. Unlike some past outings, there are no unusual covers this time, just self-penned material and pieces by Jorge Ben, Carlinhos Brown, and other native talents. Monte manages to inject a wistfulness even into an outright love song like "Amor," and the despair of memory is never far below the surface throughout. Ranging from utterly acoustic to gently electric, Monte doesn't try to rock your world, but lets her voice slip into the bloodstream and the heart on songs like "Tema de Amor." If only all pop music were as good as this.... --Chris Nickson

5 out of 5 stars A Perfect Song.......2007-03-18

I bought this CD back in 2000. I got my first Marisa CD in 1990. I have followed her career, dropped out for times, always when I reconnect I am amazed.

This CD has great moments, maybe a few songs miss but I won't mark them here. It has what I think is a perfect song.

If you love the music of Brasil, you must have this CD. That is all I have to say. It is the basis of her video DVD from Rio in 2000, and get that watch it to see her and how she performs. This concert is amazing.

The perfect song is not in the concert unfortunately. It is the last cut here. "Sou seu sabia." A song by Caetano Veloso. And perfectly Caetano.

Marisa sings it perfectly. She went to Italy to study to be an opera singer but decided that was not for her and returned to Brasil and began her great career. In this song, you hear her technique. I am an opera person, and I know that here the technique pays off. Her singing is just fantastic, I would say perfect.

Caetano's lyics are just as perfectly composed. His song becomes the exact thing he is trying to express. I can't say anymore. He has composed a song that expresses human desire through birdsong and Marisa perfectly signs it. This is lyrical and musical expression at its most intense. The arrangement here is lush, some people might misinterpret this. The expessive intensity is everywhere apparent, although.

One should buy this CD for that one track but there is so much else to buy it for.

I truly agree with "wordsmule" review on this CD.

Marisa Monte shows us what love is all about brazilan style. Do not get me wrong, this is not "typical", folklore or "world like" music.. Brazil has its own contemporary dimmension in many fields including music... and this is so universal..lets not forget that through internet and Amazon we can have access to this expression that otherwise would be reserved to those priviligied to have the access to this treasures. I live in one of the many countries neighbouring Brazil and its still very hard (and expensive) to locally find brazilian music.

Amazon.com essential recording

Marisa Monte's light but authoritative vocals could easily make her just another Brazilian pop sensation, but her choice of material and the company she keeps make her an artist to be reckoned with. Producer Arto Lindsay provides innovative and breezy backdrops (mostly in the samba vein) for the poetically surreal and romantic lyrics of Monte, Nando Reis, Carlinhos Brown, Paulinho da Viola, Arnaldo Antunes, Jorge Benjor, and even Lou Reed. Many of Brazil's superstar musicians are present, along with guest contributions from Laurie Anderson, Phillip Glass, and keyboardist Bernie Worrell from Parliament, melding well with Monte's enticing and totally Brazilian contemplations on life and love. Rose and Charcoal is elevated from easy listening by the magical imagery of the lyrics, freely translated in the liner notes. --Derek Rath

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal!.......2005-09-10

This CD is awesome all the way thru. The voice, the instrumentation, complex and subtle at the same time. This CD could not be done any better in my opinion. I've listened to this title over and over and over, have gone out and bought all other titles (all are fantastic, I like R&C and Mais the best). When she came to the USA I went to see her show. Highly recommend buying Rose and Charcoal.

5 out of 5 stars The best pop album I've ever heard.......2004-09-17

I am a classical musician and was on tour of Brazil in the late 1970's, where I developed interest in the rhythms of traditional and pop music of Brazil.

Years later, I heard Marisa Monte's ROSE AND CHARCOAL and like most others who have written, was absolutely entranced. Her voice, her pronunciation, the arrangements. It is the best album of popular music I've ever heard. Unlike an other reviewer, I find the first song, Carlinhos Brown's "Maria de Verdades" to be hypnotic; the marriage of a beautiful soulful voice, lyrics, and instrumentation just doesn't get better than this.

This transcends music to the realm of dreamtime and Monte's voice is like a breeze.

5 out of 5 stars Sublime.......2004-05-02

You absolutely must own this album. I can't think of any other CD that I have enjoyed more. Buy it, buy it, buy it!

This is a top rate, exquisite album,by one of Brazil's best vocalists.Haunting melodies,a voice that reaches into your soul, and lush ethnic instrumentation,I sat there weeping the first time I heard it,even though I never understood a word that was sung.It is just beautiful. If this album was a woman, I would be in love.Standout tracks for me include,Na Estrada,Pale Blue Eyes,Alta Noite, and most of all, Esta Melodia. This album is certainly among her best ,if not the best, that she has done. For those that are new to Marisa Monte, this is the place to start. Recomended listening.

Marisa Monte is one of the great female vocalists to emerge from MPB (Brazilian popular music), and this part-studio, part-live offering goes a long way in capturing all of the facets of her style, from the softer tones of "Blanco" to a rhythmic, energetic cover of George Harrison's "Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth)." Monte is nothing if not eclectic, leaping from Caetano Veloso's wonderful "De Noite Na Cama" to the '50s Brazilian standard "O Xote das Meninas." Sympathetic production from longtime collaborator Arto Lindsay adds a great deal, but at the end of the day it's Monte's voice and powerful personality that are stamped all over this disc. The 11 live tracks are particular standouts because of the relentless drive behind them. Both sexy and sensual, Monte never needs to belt it out; her slinkiness is all that's needed to keep things purring along. A true star. --Chris Nickson

5 out of 5 stars Superb beyond belief.......2005-02-05

I will never forget the night I introduced my brother to Marisa's music. I left him babysitting my children and gave him "Rose and Charcoal" to keep him occupied ... came home several hours later to find him weeping tears of ecstasy (I am not kidding) and a total Marisa convert. That was years ago and he and I are still die-hard Marisa fans. This album here is one of my favourite all time albums, along with Rose and Charcoal. Marisa is even more stunning live than studio, believe it or not. The variety of music on this album is amazing, and every track delights and intrigues. All are absolute works of art, but some just blow your mind, they are so beautiful, and reach somewhere deep into your soul. Always read the translations of her lyrics because they are delightful. Well ... sometimes a bit morbid, like "Bem Leve" which is about coffins, if I remember correctly, but er, delightfully morbid! Read them and you will see! To anyone who samples Marisa and loves what they hear, just buy all her albums and be done with it ... you will never regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Live Tracks.......2004-01-07

This is a cd that has recordings from Marisa Monte's shows, and before the live performance, has some "original" cuts. I remember when this came out, some people were disappointed because it wasn't an entirely new album (this one came after Rose & Charcoal). But in 2000 Monte released I "Memories Chronicles and Declarations of Love" which had mixed reviews.

I love this release, the live performance is very spirited and very fresh. "De Noite Na Cama", "Panis et Circenses ", "Beija Eu", "Menina Danca" and "O Xote das Meninas" are definitely my favorite tracks from the live portion. Her voice is soft, percise and has that distinct sound that makes it... her! Not all of the original studio tracks got me, but the first two songs were pretty cool. I still listen to this album today. What's interesting... the import of this release doesn't have the cartoon sketches "censored" on the cover like this one.

I'd definitely recommend this to the Marisa Monte fan. You have to hear some of the live interpretations of songs from "Mais" and "Rose & Charcoal". Also, if you like this maybe you should check out Daniela Mercury's "Eletrica", a live performance of some of that Bahia singer's music.

5 out of 5 stars the best of the best.......2002-07-17

As anyone will quickly see from scanning the amazon reviews of her albums, Marisa has a fanatical following, and deservedly so. She is one of the all-time great Brazilian artists, in the pantheon with Jobim and Gal Costa. This album is important for a couple of reasons. The live songs are distinct from their studio versions and in some cases better. "Xote das Meninas" is the best case in point. On her debut album, still unsure of her artistic identity, Marisa gave this song an odd, jazz-inflected treatment that simply doesn't work. Here, it gets a straight ahead "roots" treatment and the result is fantastic. Indeed, what this record does is illustrate Marisa's singular contribution to Brazian populair music (MPB); the sublime marriage of traditional north-eastern folk music to a pop sensibility. Danca da solidao is another example , a beautiful, modern rendition of a Paulinho de Viola standard. This album also benefits from a high end stereo system -- the production on both the studio and live discs is impecable. The concert recording is the best live production I have ever heard. For those wanting an introduction to Marisa, start here, though you'll buy all the other albums in the end.

5 out of 5 stars A soulful display of outstanding Brazilian music........2002-03-17

This album seems to, more than any other, encapsulate Marisa's truly remarkable career. Her voice is magical, evoking so much deep and passionate feelings in her songs. The song "Arrepio" summarizes what I came away feeling after listening to this album (tingling with pleasure). The songs really make you feel connected and drawn in. These songs are not strictly for dancing, you can sit down and listen to them or dance, the choice is yours. One thing is certain you will be refreshed and energized by this music.

Marisa Monte's sophomore effort proved to be the breakout album for the young MPB (Brazilian popular music) diva. Adventurous and artful, the album took her where few had gone before, thanks to the production work of Arto Lindsay and musical contributions from John Zorn (both stalwarts of the avant-garde New York scene), as well as Japan's Ryuichi Sakamoto and fellow Brazilian Nana Vasconcelos. The result had all the airiness and grace of the best Brazilian music, as on "Beija Eu," but with rock and new jazz overtones shading the music and adding meat to the broth. Going platinum in Monte's native country, Mais made her into a real star. It also helped establish her musical identity as someone redefining Brazilian music in her own way. Mais is a triumph of art and the first really giant step in an illustrious career. --Chris Nickson

4 out of 5 stars Producers gone wild!!! Still good, but not her best.......2002-05-29

This is one of her older CD's, and even though it is quite a good CD it lacks the charm and distinction Marisa's music obtained in her later CDs. Fortunatley, you can find 3 of the better tracks on this album reworked on Barulho Bom (a Great Noise). Even better, all 3 tracks are done in very different fashions on Barulho Bom, and all 3 are better. For example, "De noite na cama" is almost silly sounding on this CD, while on Barulho Bom it is transformed into a very sexy song. This disc's main problem is the poor production quality (that also plagued much of MPB in the early 90's). The ambient noises on some of the tracks are so distracting and inappropriate to the feel of the music that they ruin several otherwise good tracks. For example, why are little girls (and monkeys?)screaming on "Tudo pela metade"? Seriously, it ruins the song. Who was responsible for this? And Ed Motta "singing" on Ainda Lembro, he sounds like one of Boys II Men gone wrong, trying to improvise and such. It borders on the absurd. The only highlight of this CD not on Barulho Bom is "Diariamente". Although this is a pretty good album on the whole( Marisa is amazing, as always), you would be MUCH better off just buying Barulho Bom. In fact, I HIGHLY recommend Barulho Bom- it is a GREAT CD!!!

5 out of 5 stars The best album from Marisa Monte.......2001-03-29

This is my favorite album from Marisa, and I love all of them. I don't like the fact that the lyrics on the US release are all in English (how are you supposed to sing along with that???) but I do like the fact that all the songs are sung in Portuguese. Usually I find when Marisa crosses the lingual divide, something gets lost in the translation, no pun intended! Actually, "Ensaboa" has some English in it, and is a really cool song, but it's purely accessory for a great Portuguese lyric. Don't get me wrong, though obviously I think Portuguese is a more musical language than English, I enjoy listening to other artists like Elis Regina when they take on my own language. Anyway, pretty much every song on this album is a winner - I can't peg her style down because she does borrow from various genres. Marisa is known as the "new voice of MPB" (Musica Popular Brasileira), and I hear alot of Samba-Cancao in there (lyrical sambas), so I would best sum it up as modern adult Brazilian pop. No, this is not for music teeny-boppers with attention deficits. The songs are intelligent, reflective, ironic at times, but most importantly catchy - which is the only reason to like music in the first place, in my opinion. The first song "Beija Eu" is the best one in my opinion, but the rest of the material is not too far behind in quality. Beyond good material, however, is this woman's vocal ability. Someone summed it up best earlier in the comparison with the "screaming" American "divas." From what I understand, Marisa was trained as an opera singer, and has adapted these talents very well to what has become a very unique style of pop music. Her voice is powerful and clear, yet subtle at the same time. I know that probably sounds idiotic for me to say it, you just have to hear it to know what I mean.

4 out of 5 stars Great CD, fabulous singer.......2000-09-14

Marisa Monte is indeed a rare occurrence in nowadays musical scene for her music doesn't know geographical nor time boundaries. Her music brings the signature Brazilian swing permeated by Jazz influences making it easily enjoyable for a broad audience. Marisa Monte not only promotes contemporary Brazilian songwriters but also nostalgically honors the best of Brazilian popular music tradition. Differently from the so called North American "Divas" that usually scream Marisa's soft but incredibly precise voice makes singing look easy.

4 out of 5 stars On her way..........2000-06-30

This was the CD that, for me, proved that Marisa's direction and style were superior. She moved on from the showtune-yness of her first album, head-first into a blend of Brazilian pop that is heartfelt, melodic and mood-enhancing. This is a must-have CD, and the only reason I give it 4 stars is that it's successor, "Rose & Charcoal", is still to this day her crowning achievement.

4 out of 5 stars Marisa is consistantly otima!.......1999-10-04

Mais is a great album. The only thing I didn't like was just having the english translations of the song lyrics in the booklet. Where's the portuguese? Or is American monolinguism dictating song books too? Excellent disc and a definite must-own for aficionados da Marisa.

Even if is a good cd of music,I'm really disapointed because it is imposible to listen it by a car's cd player. The reason is the recording protection. In the store they explain me that mabe only in very good cd player's could be posible. So the persons who buy the cd insted of coping it, are punished if they don't have an expensive car's cd player.Always the same inocents pay for thiefs.

5 out of 5 stars I miss Brazil!.......2003-07-29

This will always be the CD that reminds me of my recent, first trip to Bahia (I intend to go back every year.) Warm, lush, gorgeous music. Track #3 is very popular in Brazil right now. Buy this CD - I saw a ton of bootlegged copies being sold on the beaches, so I fear Tribalista is not making the money they could be, and they deserve it.

5 out of 5 stars Forget the CD, buy the DVD..........2003-03-03

I ordered the DVD from somlivre.com and besides having all the great music, it offers an unobtrusive, intimate look at the environment in which the music was created - having watched the DVD, I can tell you that contrary to the previous reviewer's comments, Carlinhos Brown contributes a lot to what you hear on Tribalistas.

5 out of 5 stars Another neo-tropicalia gem from Brazil.......2003-02-12

A lovely little album! The band's name and all-star cast are an apparent tribute to the Veloso-Gil-Bethania-Costa mid-1970s supergroup, Doce Barbaros (The Sweet Barbarians), but in this case the musicians, neo-tropicalistas Arnaldo Antunes, Carlinhos Brown and Marisa Monte, go for tender restraint, rather than wild excess. It's a remarkably gentle, dreamy album, with an interesting blend of voices and styles. If I had to characterize it, I'd say this sounds more like an Arnaldo Antunes album than anything else, with its off-kilter sensibility and unhurried style. Monte, who put this album out on her own Phonomotor label, plays the central vocal part, though, with both Antunes and Brown complimenting her in unusual harmony parts. Carlinhos seems a little lost in the mix, at least his former trademark Afro-Brazilian percussion is hardly as prominent as on other albums. All in all, this is a very pleasant, inventive and multi-textured record, well worth checking out!

5 out of 5 stars The Triumphant Trio.......2002-12-30

Tribalistas is such a fantastic recording! There are five or six instant hits and several dreamy songs. The songs are so catchy you won't be able to get them out of your head. Marisa's vocals are her best yet and she always works so well with Carlinhos and Arnaldo. The lyrics are unique (get a Brasilian friend to translate them for you!) and the melodies charming. Like the best of Brasilian music it feels like they are playing at your own party! Don't miss this one!

4 out of 5 stars Marisa Monte has won an uphill battle.......2006-03-23

I remember many years ago reading in Veja (Brazilian "Time" or "Newsweek") an "old guard" (baby boomer - generation) music critic trashing Marisa Monte as an upstart bubble gum pop star who didn't have a fraction of the talent of the old divas like Elis Regina. (on a different continent, it is the same battle Mariza has been fighting against the old guard Fado critics with respect to the likes of Amalia Rodrigues).

Fortunately, in time Marisa Monte has proven those cranks wrong.
Even on this early record you can hear Marisa's genius. This album may be uneven, but there are some brilliant pieces. In particular, Xote das Meninas is a suprising, soulful, inspired production. Marisa shows an extraordinary sense of improvisational timing. What starts off as a vaguely reggae-infused cover of the Gonzaga tune transforms into more and more of a jazz-inspired effort, especially when the trumpet comes in and begins to improvise. Then, when Marisa takes cue from the trumpet and slips into a blues-inspired English, it is absolutely brilliant. Going back to listen to the original Gonzaga, one realizes how much Marisa, her musicians, and her producer bring to the song... how did they squeeze so much out of such a simple old accordian tune? This song alone makes the album worth owning. There are plenty of other wonderful tracks, and a few dull ones. But overall, it is a wonderful disc.

5 out of 5 stars Wow, this is Great !.......2003-08-30

Marisa Monte's standout disc. Every track is great. She does some great Brazilian MPB covers like "Ela so Quer" and "Chocolate", and some new ones as well. Several of the oldies have the distinct Brazilian characteristic of double-entendre lyrics which could slip by the old military censors. "Comida" is just a powerful song, great lyrics. Marisa's voice is just amazing.

5 out of 5 stars Marisa's essence.......2002-10-13

This has got to be the MM album I have listened to the most. I am aware that it incarnates a search for her musical style but I find that the producer had very well targeted the right styles for her wide range of talent. She sings jazz, Motown and Brazilian rock and bossa nova. It reveals, more than her latter albums, the adaptability of her voice to almost any musical situation. I say bravo ! I am a singer too and use this album for training. Very rich.

1 out of 5 stars Marisa fan:"Just plain awful!".......2002-02-01

I am one of Marisa's biggest fans-I absolutely love all of her other CDs, but I feel I have the duty to warn any unsuspecting Marisa fans that this album is just plain awful. Even on the first listening of this CD its clear that Marisa is yet to find her voice or her sound. At times on the album she sounds like a female impersonating Louis Armstrong. And the songs in english? Someone should've taught her the songs phonetically-they are so bad, they're humorous!!! This album doesn't even have one song that would merit its purchase. Go buy Rosa e carvao instead!!!

2 out of 5 stars A Fine First Effort, But...........2001-11-28

This album of Marisa's is fine, but it is clear she is trying to work out her musical style. She swings wildly between Mo-town and classic Bossa Nova. Unless you are interested in owning all of MM's albums, I recommend buying any of her other albums first.

5 out of 5 stars concepçao perfeita .......2007-03-18

First, I believe this is the most ravishingly beautiful CD Marisa Monte has created. Yes, I have "Universo ao meu redeo." I love that completely too. As she has said interviews, she has released her unidentical twins in 2006.

Songs are short here. Hardly any are longer than 3 minutes. If you measure a CD by its length in minutes, then you will be disappointed. If you measure it by quality, then no. Her conception in this album is as perfect as I have ever heard from her. The songs, she says, were from several years or back composing, and if so, she has assembled a complete concept such I never have heard from her.

There is so much here. (Although Marisa has created so much beautiful music in the past, that . . . who can compare?) Dance tunes like "Aquela" and lyrical poems too. Brazilian music is almost all intensely lyrical. You must understand the Portuguese language or find a translation to really plump the depths of what is going on in the song.

Regardless, you can still be seduced by the sound. And it is here, in spades.

Here she composes songs with Carlinhos Brown and others, and I can't find anything that is not just wonderful. There is not one song here I would wish to set aside for another one. They are all equally wonderful.

If you love this and want more, go get Marisa's first CD. Or Memórias, Crônicas & Declarações De Amor. This CD is the basis of her concert DVD from her Rio de Janeiro concert and buy that too. Then you will start to know her.

5 out of 5 stars for all your copy-protection problems..........2006-12-12

Sorry Amazon, but both new albums by MM are available on itunes....

No problems transferring them to your ipod or sharing...

3 out of 5 stars I may be MM's biggest fan, but this album doesn't thrill.......2006-12-08

Honestly, Infinito Particular isn't her best work. I would put it on par with "Mais". It does not being to compare with "Memorias..." or "Cor De Rosa..." By no means is this a bad album, but it doesn't have any tracks that stand out. There are no Magalabares, Diariamentes, Maria de Verdades, or even a Nao Va Embora type track on this album. I only give it three stars because I am such a huge MM fan, and after such a long wait, we got two mediocre albums, when I was hoping for something that would dominate my IPod for the next few years.

5 out of 5 stars A great recording from a true artist.......2006-11-18

I've been listening to Marisa's music since 1991 and I think this new cd ranks among her finest works. It may not be as immediately accessible as Rose and Charcoal or Mais but if you listen to it a few times you will find that this album is the work of a mature artist with depth (not just an empty body with no soul like too many popular musicians today).

The second track on this cd (Vilarejo) is probably one of her most beautiful compositions ever (I would rank it next to 'Segue o Seco' from Rose and Charcoal). There is a great video that she produced for Vilarejo - you can look for it on Youtube.

2 out of 5 stars Ho Hum.......2006-10-19

Unmemorable. Marisa Monte has lost her edge. She still has that beautiful voice, but these songs are flat little diddies she probably sings in the shower. They have no power, no staying power, and they are clearly not a challenge to her vocally or artistically. Pass.
