Irish Pub Songs

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
In the case of this buoyant CD, "various artists" actually means "Clancy Brothers," since there is always a Clancy or more to be found on each tune. Then again, who else do you want to hear sing "Irish pub songs" anyway? Most of the 18 songs find the Brothers joining forces with Lou Killen; three cuts feature Liam in solo performance and one features the Brothers with Robbie O'Connell. Like the Eskimos and snow, the Irish seem to have a million words for alcohol and all of them seem to pop up here at some point. Mixed in with the jolly drinking songs are songs about women, history, odd characters, and politics, but they don't spoil the joyous mood and they last just long enough for you to refill your jug. By the way, Bob Dylan fans will want to hear O'Connell and the Clancys' spot-on reworking of "Ramblin' Gamblin' Willie," a tune that Dylan based on the Clancys' reading of "Brennan on the Moor." --Marc Greilsamer

If you can find a more stirring collection of Irish ditties, you'd better buy it, but it's doubtful you'll top this budget set. Not with the great Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem doing the honors and a price so low you'll be able to afford an extra pint for your mates. The wind is at your back all the way as the lads avoid chestnuts like "Danny Boy" along with Broadway-Irish show tunes, tearing into "Whack Fol the Diddle" and other "reel" deals instead. Highlights include the weeper "The Croppy Box," roof rattler "Finnigan's Wake," and "The Rising of the Moon," better known for the same-tune political song it spawned, "The Wearing of the Green." Tommy is in beautiful voice on "The Foggy Dew," earning his reputation as one of the best Irish singers of recent decades, and the Clancy Brothers excel on instruments and voice box. --Bob Tarte

5 out of 5 stars fabulous .......2007-07-22

I love hearing the old Irish songs my grandparents sung. This was great for my St Patrick's day dinner.

4 out of 5 stars Casual Listener .......2007-06-25

I don't listen to a lot of this style of music and am trying it out for the first time. I must say that I like it great to read or tie flies too, if you're into that sort of thing.

Clancy bros is always a good choice. This album combines all the music from 2 older releases, good price!

Just to clarify the music...
These tracks come from the first two albums of the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem. They are called "Rising of the Moon" and "Come Fill Your Glass With Us" These tracks were recently reissued on Rykodisc, restored and remastered. Frankly, they sound AMAZING! This complation has terrible sound quality, and the recordings sound like they were copied from an old LP. Don't settle for this ugly sounding reissue, go and check out the remastered versions. Unless you are on a serious budget, get the other discs. Combined, they cost about twice what this costs, but IT IS WORTH IT!

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed in Dublin.......2007-07-27

I was disappointed in this cd. The first song is great! One of those you play again as soon as it's over, but after that...not much to get excited about. I've heard plenty of catchy irish pub songs that stick in your head long after you've heard them - and there aren't too many here. Too many slow, repetitive songs. There are much better choices out there. In addition, I agree with the other reviews here...it's unprofessional (and cheap looking) to not even bother to mention the singer's names. You gotta give credit where credit is due. That's just in bad taste.

4 out of 5 stars Brought Back Memories.......2007-07-13

Lots of great songs, including a few I'd all but forgotten, and a couple good ones I don't think I ever heard before.

5 out of 5 stars On time and in great shape........2007-04-16

My order was on time and in great shape.

4 out of 5 stars A very decent intro for the price.......2005-03-15

First: The correct samples for "All the Best Irish Drinking Songs" (which has a jacket photo of a man & woman drinking in a dim pub) are found under the listing for "The Best of Irish Pub Songs: 20 Great Favorites", which has a jacket illustration of a drawing of a pink pub front called "Dan's Pub"; seems there's some information confusion between the two listings. Where the samples are for the "pink pub" recording are I have no idea.)

I first bought "All the Best Irish Drinking Songs" in cassette years ago to simply learn some pub songs before an Irish vacation. I wasn't looking for classic renditions or sublime technical achievement, just something to teach me the tunes.

For the price, I was very pleasantly surprised. The songs are great, and this assortment is hard to find in one recording. Whether the "pub atmosphere" in the background is contrived or authentic was irrelevant to me; I did feel that it enhanced the listening experience, however, so I think it's a nice touch. If inauthenticity in that kind of thing gets your cockles up, then look to the Clancy Brothers or any other Irish folk legends for "live" concert recordings, or Matt Molloy for an honest-to-gosh pub recording, but you won't find these tunes in one product for any price anywhere else. The only downsides I found with this economic recording were no lyric sheet, and tempos that might vary from "studio" versions of the same songs, but all in all, it's a very enjoyable little tape for a small investment.

1 out of 5 stars Worst Irish CD EVER.......2004-12-14

This is the worst drinking song CD I have ever bought. For the record this is not the Jolly Beggermen in any way. Don't by this if you have a choice. The preformer kills the songs. I agree with the person who says that an Irish Drinking song recording should be done in an Irish Bar or Pub, recorded live.

2 out of 5 stars Great to hear some old familiar songs, but songs to short........2006-02-11

Many of the songs listed were amoung my favorites, I was so excited to hear this CD. But when I recieved it. Each song listed only has a verse or two and is part of a 3-4 song blend all crammed into a 4 minute song track. So you really don't get the full enjoyment of the whole song. You only get about a minute of each song. The rendition of danny boy was terrible. The song has a terrible background music you'd find on an electric piano keyboard under cheesey DANCE beat. Seriously a dance beat to Dannyboy? Other than the dannyboy fiasco and the briefness of each song grouped on each track, the music was pretty good, I loved hearing all the songs my grandfather and his brothers would sing, like Moonshiner. But I would prefer to listen to the full version of my favorite pub songs. Not the condensed combinations of one or two versus of several songs crammed into one track on the cd. The songs just didn't flow. I'd recommend a different CD.

1 out of 5 stars Dreadful Example of Irish Music.......2003-02-09

Oh, where to begin - the fake brogue used or the simply terrible sounds altogether? Trust me, you'll NEVER hear this kind of dreadful music in the pubs in Ireland - UNLESS, of course, the only pub you enter happens to be Durty Nelly's the night before your flight back home from Shannon.

Imagine handing a CD by Lawrence Welk to some foreigner and telling them "this is a very good example of American music", and that's what you have here that is supposed to be representative of Irish music.

This is the sort of thing that they play in the retirement homes on St. Patrick's Day, and then they put the CD away for another 364 days.

5 out of 5 stars A Little Bit of Irishness.......2001-09-14

This CD has wonderful, classic folk songs from Ireland. It makes me feel like I am in a pub with a bunch of friends having a drink. The music is upbeat and toe-tapping. My two-year old loves to dance to it and it always puts me in a better mood.

5 out of 5 stars Accurate reflection of pub songs.......2007-03-23

We enjoyed the fact that this CD follows the tradition of pub songs and ballads. My husband and I surprisingly liked the ballads as much or more than the pub songs. Only 1 song has tonal quality because the singer forgot the words and the backup musicians don't come through strong enough; but that actually adds character to it since you know it is not being performed in a sterile recording booth somewhere. Enjoyed it!

What a great album for those of us purists, even if we aren't Irish. Irish Pub Songs is the kind of music you put on when having a group of friends over for the world's greatest beverage. My favorite song is Beer, Beer, Beer- everybody sing along. I recommend this album for those of you who enjoy a good barley pop and festive drinking music.

kind of hard to leave a good review when its been over a month, and the CD still hasnt gotten to me.

          5 out of 5 stars Grab a half-n-half and enjoy!.......2001-10-03

If you don't mind the sound quality of a pub, instead of a studio, this is as good as it gets! In exchange for the background sounds, you get pub songs as they were meant to be: in a pub. Leading off off with one of my favorites, Black Velvet Band, gives you a feel for the sound of the whole album. Recorded live, with great feeling, not in the sterile dryness of a studio, gives this album a life and a happiness it might not have had otherwise.
