Album Description
1997 EMI reissue of 1990 Capitol compilation featuring 30 ofthe greatest tracks by American guitar hero & his singing partner, including 'Brazil', 'Hip Billy Boogie', 'Jealous', and 'How High The Moon'.Album Details
Collection of songs by the then-husband & wife duo of guitar great Les Paul & country western singer Mary Ford. Features their biggest hits 'How High the Moon', 'Tiger Rag', 'Lover' & many, many others.Customer Reviews:
Horrible Quality!!!!.......2007-08-01
Excellent.......2007-03-25
specifically for the tracks "Josephine" and "Little
Rock Getaway" which, among other titles, were in my
late dad's record collection. "Walkin' and Whistlin'
Blues" I had heard on an album about 20 years ago.
Talk about memories.
What's interesting about this collection, as other
reviewers have noted, is that it contains mostly
Les Paul instrumentals--not quite so much Mary Ford
(curiously, "Jealous" has been included, which was
not one of their hits, but was on the flip-side of
one of their better-known tracks--possibly "How High
The Moon", but I'm not sure). For those of you who
want more of Mary's vocals, I recommened that you bypass
this CD and get "The best of the Capitol masters--90th
birthday edition"(I have a previously-releaesd version
of this CD, which only contains the tracks from "Lover"
to "Hummingbird", plus some of the funniest liner notes
from Les himself that I've ever read! I don't know if
the liner notes were retained). I believe another reviewer
wrote about the sound quality. Personally, I believe
"Josephine" sounds EXACTLY as it did on my dad's 45.
Preserving artistic integrity is usually the goal when
reissuing analog-recorded music, and EMI/Capitol has
done a fabulous job here in my opinion. It's also noteworthy
that, with the exception of "The Kangaroo" and "Mandolino",
this CD contains all of Les's HIT instrumentals, plus other
good tunes, like his take on Duke Ellington's "Caravan", an
interesting version of "The Man On The Flying Trapeze", etc.
Many of his instrumentals were on flip-sides of the vocal
records with Mary. And how Les could play that guitar, not
to mention the overdubbing which STILL sounds state-of-the-
art to me! Thank you, Amazon.
One of My favorites.......2007-02-09
Brilliant guitar solos and amazing harmony vocals.
Thirty songs each unique to the Les Paul and Mary Ford style.
One of my favorite albums.
Really takes me back!.......2005-10-07
For those who admire jazz.......2005-04-01
If you admire the jazz side of Les Paul, then you would enjoy it very much. But I'm going to look for something more pop-orientated and with more vocal contribution from Mary, maybe more of their Columbia period (1957-1963).

A bridge between bossa nova and 1960s pop, Sergio Mendes' music was easy listening, vaguely psychedelic pop, light jazz, and bossa nova all rolled into one. Mendes and Brasil '66 (which featured Mendes on keyboards and a revolving cast of two female vocalists, bass, guitar, drums and percussion) had a number of hits from the mid-'60s to the early-1970s that are included here. Getting his professional start playing and arranging for Antonio Carlos Jobim and Joao Gilberto, Mendes typically filled out his proper albums with updated versions of popular songs written by the Brazilian masters as well as some of his own tunes his tunes "Look Around" and "So Many Stars" are included. But this collection really surveys his interpretations of pop tunes of the day, some of which were never hits for Mendes. The small combo's light touch and rich vocal harmonies make for pleasant if kitschy covers of hits like the Beatles' "Fool On The Hill" and "Day Tripper," Burt Bacharach's "The Look Of Love," and others. --Tad HendricksonCustomer Reviews:

Album Description
They may have rationed meat, milk, canned goods, and gasoline, but there was no limit to the musical talent during World War II. Morale-boosting sounds on the home front and "over there" were one of the Allies' most potent weapons. WWII gave birth to many of the 1940s' most popular artists and songs, as well as many of the most important independent record labels. Songs That Got Us Through WWII is the first of a two-volume series collecting the hits that kept the home fires burning and brought a little bit of America to the G.I.s overseas. Compiled and developed by singer/songwriter/music historian Billy Vera, Vol. 1 features many of the era's biggest artists, including The Andrews Sisters, Frank Sinatra, Duke Ellington, The Mills Brothers, The Ink Spots, Harry James, and many more.Customer Reviews:

In this follow-up to the smashing success of her 1997 CD Time to Say Goodbye, Sarah Brightman continues down the primrose crossover path, blithely gliding from covers of Hooverphonic (the title track) and Kansas ("Dust in the Wind") to Puccini and film scores (Titanic and The English Patient). Sometimes, as in "Anytime, Anywhere," the crossover happens within the same song--in this case welding a rhythm track to the somber harmonies of Albinoni's "Adagio." But there's nary a stylistic speed bump to jolt her listeners, as Brightman focuses her tiny, seraphic voice like a beam of light on each melody. The result, bless her heart, may be the invention of a whole new form of kitsch. Like plastic surgery, Brightman's years of specialized vocal training have helped refine her ability to float confidently well-rounded, sparkling tones in her upper range. These have a Dresden china-like, touching fragility in such songs as "So Many Things" and are well-suited to the gauzily romantic (and overproduced) gloss of the string-heavy arrangements that predominate. Eden also introduces Brightman as songwriter ("In Paradisum," with its mix of sitar and modal chant) and features a bonus track unavailable on the album's European-released version ("The Last Words You Said"). --Thomas MayAmazon.com

Superb.......2007-07-15
AMAZING!.......2007-04-12
I'm not an operatic snob, and I'm not a classical officionado, but I do know what I like, and this is it! Brightman always seems to start of her CDs with a little interlude at the beginning of her albums (in LA LUNA - "La Lune", from FLY - "The Fly", from HAREM - "Kama Sutra"). Her "In Paradisum" is long and beautiful, her voice soaring to high vocals. The next piece is "Eden", originally created by Hooverphonics, and this version is more classical than the other! It's really great! "So Many Things" is a great piece, followed by "Anytime, Anywhere", a Foreign Language - English piece (which works really well by the way). Bailero is the next piece, and it's great as well! Honestly, every single piece is beautiful, and it's a MUST-HAVE for any Sarah Brightman fan! However, the standout piece has to be "Nessun Dorma", which is a male aria, usually sung by Pavarotti or any other male. However, Sarah thought she could do it, and she did! Buy this CD!

Picture a square with Clannad, pianist David Lanz, Mannheim Steamroller, and the musicians of Riverdance at its corners. Somewhere within those stylistic borders you will encounter the European duo Secret Garden. The popular twosome--Irish violinist Fionnuala (fi-NOO-la) Sherry and Norwegian pianist/keyboardist Rolf Lovland--have attracted a sizable following with their heart-touching specialty: a wistful, violin-rooted, pop-folk-classical melange that often strikes the ear as a film score in search of some delicate romantic tale. Songs from a Secret Garden is the duo's debut recording from 1995, and it principally offers a series of pensive dialogues between Sherry's stately violin and Lovland's subdued piano, yielding equal measures of sweetness and melancholy. Whistles, pipes, percussion, strings, and ethereal voices serve as embellishments. At times you may sense you're being serenaded by strolling musicians with a heavy sentimental streak; at other times you may feel genuinely moved--perhaps by something as lovely as the reverential "Sigma" and its sublime, Gregorian-like choral passages. Only one uptempo tune, "The Rap," surfaces here; a few others would have been welcomed. And yes, this is the disc where you will find "Heartstrings," the composition that once smote Barbra Streisand's heart. She eventually acquired the rights to the piece, inserted lyrics, renamed it "I've Dreamed of You" (found on A Love Like Ours), and sang it to James Brolin during the couple's 1998 wedding. --Terry WoodCustomer Reviews:

Amazon.com essential recording
Sarah Brightman's career was launched by her success in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera, so it's no surprise to hear the soprano paying homage to the composer on this disc. Really a Brightman best-of, the album includes the Phantom theme (a duet with Michael Crawford), the light-opera fare of "Chanson D'enfance" from Aspects of Love, "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina" from Evita, and numerous other Lloyd Webber classics. Throughout, Brightman's diminutive voice lends a fragility to these musical theater tunes that you'll either love or despise. On Evita's "Another Suitcase, Another Hall" and Cats' "Memory," she literally chirps through the vocal lines. No matter. The growing legion of Brightman fans wouldn't have it any other way. --Jason VerlindeAlbum Details

Great Music for any time!!!.......2006-11-10
Perry Como - Superb Singer, Super Songs and Superb Sound!.......2006-08-10
This CD gets 5 stars straight away because of the guy on the CD - Perry Como!
However, there are several problems with this collection. This IS NOT 'The very Best of Perry Como' - a more appropriate title would have been 'Some of Perry Como's Biggest Sellers'.
'The very best of' CD's should give compilation producers the opportunity to explore the performers legacy more thoroughly. Here, all you have is songs that have been released on 100's of compilations through the years, plus many novelty songs - all of which are superbly performed, but that isn't doing much for Perry's credability! There are at least 6 or 7 'novelty' songs on this set and the rest are all ballads, etc thathave also been released countless amounts of times.
A 'The very Best of' collection should look at the performers entire legacy and pick tracks from various genres, era's, etc and include them chronologically. 'The very Best of' collections should also give you a taster of how diverse the singer was. This collection does not do that!
Once again making people not take Perry seriously!
Perry is currently one of the most underrated singers of his generation. It is probably a lot to do with the fact that Perry did not have the enormous ego that Frank Sinatra had - which is most definitely one of the reasons Perry has so much respect from his fans!
Perry lived the quiet, honest life. He wasn't getting into trouble, his private life was his own and he was a realy nice guy!
Another problem is that he scored so many hits with Novelty songs (which are superbly done by Perry!) but, so many lazy music lovers who don't look further than the big hits are assuming that this was the extent of Perry's legacy! THEY ARE TOTALLY WRONG!
I suggest that those of you who think that Perry's extent of music is mainly novelty songs should check out the following website: www.kokomo.ca - a superb website, cataloging Perry's -'Known to Exist' discography. You WILL be impressed, if you appreciate and enjoy top class performers and music.
There is one very special addition to this collection. It is an alternate take of 'It's impossible' - Which will interest any Como enthusiasts!
Perry Como to me is the greatest singer in the World - ever! That's my own opinion, but anyone else, it is definitely a fact that Perry was one of the finest performers of the 20th century - without a doubt!
This CD is a great addition to any CD collection! But! Please do bare in mind that this IS NOT 'The very best of Perry Como'! To me every song is the very best! Pardon the pun, but 'It's Impossible' to make a 'The very best of' collection Perry Como recordings consisting of one CD! You need at the very least a box set of CD's!
Superb Listening as always!
Matthew Long

An excellent retrospective of a singer who is often forgotten..........2006-05-27
This CD is an excellent introduction to Perry's talent as well as a retrospective of Perry's very active singing career. The songs on this CD, as the author of the liner notes points out, all were number one hits or sold at least a million copies. Some feat!
The CD starts off nicely with the upbeat "I'm Gonna Love That Gal (Like She's Never Been Loved Before)," a fun celebration of romance. Other fun and playful songs about love include ""A"--You're Adorable" and "Hot Diggity (Dog Ziggity Boom)."
However, the CD highlights the type of traditional love ballad that Perry loved to sing so much. His rendition of "Some Enchanted Evening" is brilliant; and I liked his classic "It's Impossible," which is based on a Spanish song entitled "Somos Novios (We're Lovers)." The CD ends with the touching ballad "And I Love You So" written by Don McLean and recorded by Perry in early 1973.
The liner notes boast an extensive essay about Perry's professional career although they do gloss over the 1960's as does this album, unfortunately. There are some great color photos of Perry and you get the credits and recording dates for all the songs on this CD.
Although this CD has been in my collection for many years the quality of the sound has not diminished one bit. I would say that the quality of the sound is excellent. The digital transfers and audio restoration by Bill Lacey, Jim Crotty and Mike Hartry are very well done.
In short, this CD is a wonderful way to give younger people their introduction to the incomparable Perry Como. It is a terrific single CD retrospective, too. I highly recommend this for Como fans who want a single CD of his huge hits and fans of classic pop vocals. Thank you, Perry!
