Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Stunning compositional virtuosity; difficult music........2003-12-02

This is one of those strange records in my collection: I marvel at it every time I play it, yet I'm always nervous picking it up. The emotions and ideas expressed on this record are like an inter-dimensional signal; they demand your total attention. Jorane uses classical and rock instrumentation, New Age sound effects, her own versatile voice, and studio wizardry to weave bizarre soundscapes that sound like nobody else. Sinead O'Connor's first record is the closest comparison, but even O'Connor never went into such psychotic musical territories.

Listening to Vent Fou is like witnessing a mystical ritual that's frightening in its alien nature, but beautiful in an incomprehensible way. Jorane's voice goes from an angelic high croon on "Ineffable" to the ugly chants of "Monsieur Piment". On the hard-rocking, utterly nuts title track, she builds a mighty rhythm track with pounding drums (sounding like Shannon Wright), aggressive punk-rock vocals, and most impressively, a cacophonous, riffing cello that sounds every bit as muscular as a Metallica rhythm guitar.

This record is so incredibly strange that I don't play it very much. But it's a highly exciting record to listen to: The musical grounds it scales are simply exhilarating, like exploring an expressionistic world without a map or a guide. Definitely ear-opening and mind-bending.

Being French canadian, she mixes the best of America with the best of Europe, Ghost are flying in those songs. You will never see such mystical sound from strings. we say in French "SUPERBE!"
