Great album, worth having! Although the music might seem a little strange at first to someone unaccustomed to the sounds of Brasillian music, i definetly recommend it. The melodies are beautiful, Chico's voice is very pleasant, and the lyrics are great - do try to find a translation you you don't know Portuguese, it's worth it!

Chico Buarque 30 years ago, mature as ever.......2000-05-12

When you are in business you are supposed to grow more mature. This is very difficult for Chico Buarque, who 30 years ago was already one of MPB stars, still fighting the (now long dead) military government.

You have a mix of political (Deus lhe pague), quotidian (prize-winning Construcao), lullaby (Acalanto) and romantic (Valsinha) in one of his best works

Poetry and music wonderfully merged.......1999-07-22

This CD is the best of Buarque's carreer. The title track is a contundent social claim, using only a few words. Other tracks, such "Valsinha", are pungent love songs. And the tunes are very, very gorgeous. Masterpiece is the right word to describe this work.

Um CD imperdível! Um show maravilhoso!.......2005-04-09

Este show é verdadeiramente imperdível e, graças a Deus, já que o perdemos (pelo menos eu), convém ouvir este CD simplesmente maravilhoso. O arranjo em Gota d'água é magistral e nunca mais visto em outros shows ou discos (se eu estiver enganado, alguém me avise, por favor). Mas todas as faixas são de um brilhantismo somente existente quando se juntam dois artistas do porte de Chico Buarque e Maria Bethania. Comprem! Não vão se arrepender!

This is a great live collaboration between two of Brazil's biggest pop stars. Originally released in 1975.

1975 found Chico and Bethania working together on stage for the first time.This happened at the nightclub Canecao in Rio's Botafogo neighborhood.Response was so overwhelming that the weeekend shows were sold out for over six months. This amazing album was the child of this tournee which showcased Chico's songwriting and Bethania's singing and unusually dramatic performance ."Ole Ola","Sinal Fechado","Foi Assim" became classics as a result.The first single "Vai levando" became a Top Ten with a bullet upon release and the album reigned atop the Hot 100 Brasil chart for over four months.Not bad for a first time collaboration.But again,Chico Buarque has been polled to be the Artist of the Century in his country.Bethania,likewise,is considered the Queen of Romantic Song and the first female singer to have a million selling album later in 1978.This is a gem!

O melhor da MPB.......2004-03-27

Eu ouvi este disco pela primeira vez em 1982, 10 anos após seu lançamento. Devido à forte censura no Brasil estas músicas raramente eram tocadas nas rádios. É um dos discos que melhor traduzem aquilo podemos chamar de MPB, Música Popular Brasileira. Todas as músicas são de altíssimo nível, tanto em letra, quanto em melodia. As dificuldades técnicas da gravação não prejudicam em nada o prazer de ouvi-lo. Ainda hoje, as novas gerações o cultuam. Mas não é para qualquer ouvido, porque as canções bastante sofisticadas. Destaco aqui algumas canções que não fizeram grande sucesso mas que são lindas, como Ana de Amsterdam, Janelas Abertas (um tango à Piazzola), Morena dos Olhos Dágua. As demais, são grandes sucessos da MPB e dispensam comentários.

Five stars because is history!.......2004-03-03

Buenos Aires; 1976; I was 18 and for the first time on my own in the big city, when I first heard this album at a friend's home (I presume his parents had bought it). We listened to it endlessly and learned all the lyrics. It was my first encounter with Brazilian culture and in the context of the Argentine "dirty war," this joint concert, became an oasis of comradery and peotry. Indeed both, Chico and Caetano, have written some of the most beautiful and profound songs of MPB. The first, the offspring of an academic family, is a master of language and uses his skills to describe the quotidian joys and sorrows of the common man (and woman!) The second, no less talented, digs into the existencial dilemmas of the Brazilian people. With feminist undertones, in "Esse Cara" Caetano writes a first person love song in which a woman declares her love for "That Guy": "Ele é quem quer/ele é o homen/eu sou apenas uma mulher" (He is what he wants/he is the man/I'm just a woman.) For me, it was a delightful shock to listen the voice of a woman sung by a man! A year later he would surprise me again with the gay connotations of "Menino do Rio" and, sometime later, "Leaozinho." I wanted to be like them, live amid all that beauty and freedom and, less than twelve months later, my dream came true.

Chico y Caetano. Caetano y Chico. Dos grandes, dos maestros y dos leyendas de la música de Brasil. ¡Juntos! Ya por ese sólo hecho este CD es una joya. La música es excelente, con grandes momentos como "Voce nao entende nada/Cotidiano" y "Partido Alto". El sonido transmite mucho lo que sucede dentro y fuera del escenario, gracias a imperfecciones, altos y bajos. Bueno: se grabó en Brasil en 1972, hace treinta años. Pero lo que hay que notar es que no todo es color de rosa: hay algunos bajones, hay excelentes momentos y otros no tan bien logrados. Es por eso que no le coloco cinco estrellas. Pudo haber sido aún mejor.

In this CD you can find a truly piece of art, two of the finest musicians and songwriters came together (before i was even born...) to make pure poetry, so i thank them! Obrigado!

This CD is among the very best ever recorded in Brazil. Chico Buarque is Brazil's finest songwriter, and Caetano is not far behind. Together, they are incredible on this live recording. This is a true classic -- one that has stood the test of time.

Intriguing........2007-03-11

Vinicius de Moraes called him a "phenomenon who accomplished the perfect union of both cultivated and popular culture", and Chico Buarque has certainly played a special role in the Brazilian music scene.
Once hailed as a great traditionalist, he went on to cause controversy with his experimental take on samba, and for his work as a dramatist. Now, after an eight-year gap (in which he completed another novel) this "carioca" (one who was born in Rio) is back with an intriguing batch of new songs, examining how his much-loved city lost out to Sao Paulo as Brazil's economic capital, and how Rio is now battling with drugs and crime.
The songs are lilting, thoughtful and conversational, using a mixture of sparse instrumentation and full orchestra, and with a dramatic, atmospheric mix of strings, electric guitar and voices on "Ode Aos Ratos".
There's only one complaint. He is a celebrated lyricist - so why is there no translation for those who don't speak Portuguese?

Carioca Diferente.......2006-06-08

Carioca is the most unusual album by Chico. Lyrics are 90% free in the music context. Which is perfect. At the end with the terrifc "Imagia" (music by maestro Jobim), we have a felling that Carioca could be Chico's last work in music...

I hope not...

Escrevo em português porque sou brasileiro, mas não posso deixar de recomendar este CD que, ademais de ter uma seleção primorosa, torna mais acessível para quem fala o idioma de Cervantes, a mensagem poética do nosso Chico. Recomendo também os CDs "Meus Caros Amigos" e "Chico Buarque" (de 1978,que tem Apesar de Você). Estes são realmente excepcionais e ainda hoje, depois de mais de 20 anos de tê-los escutado pela primeira vez, não me canso de ouvi-los mais muitas vezes. Chico Buarque, one of Brazil's master poets of popular music, is from an ethnically Italian family, partly grew up in Italy, and is fluent in several languages, including Spanish... You might think that this Spanish-language album, filled with translations of some of his best songs, would be a flawed of iffy effort... Hardly! It's elegant and poetic, the words flow beautifully and the music is among the strongest efforts of his career. Quite nice!

chico es uno de los grandes musicos no ya latinoamericanos, sino de la musica popular del mundo. sus bellas melodias se acompañan de letras con gran contenido poetico y social. Este cd es una oportunidad casi unica para los que no dominamos el portugues de poder apreciarlas plenamente. La seleccion de temas es excelente, abarcando parte de lo mejor de su amplisimo repertorio. Tanto la traduccion , como chico cantando en español, no desmerecen en nada a las versiones originales en portugues.

Un cd que debemos poseer todos los hispanoparlantes que gustemos de la musica de brasil, de chico o simplemente de esta exquisita conjuncion de un gran interprete con hermosas melodias y poeticas letras

A beautiful collection of Chico's songs in spanish........1999-11-16

This is a very rare and beatiuful CD with the best of Chico Buarque songs, but in spanish. This is a must have for those who enjoys the fine poetry and intelligent lyrics. Comes from that slow brazilian tunes to that well known classic rhythms and into the that brazlian's rhythmics songs. "Geni y el Zepelin" is an incredible well done metaphore, as the tune is. "La Construcción" and "Que Será" are two classics of Latinamerican music, the fisrt one has an outstanding use of the language and you have hear the arregments, the second one is with Milton Nascimento on the vocals. "Querido Amigo" very ingenious and nice letter-song to a friend :) "A Pesar de Usted" one of the protest classics on 70's 80's brazil. This CD is one of my favorites of all times on spanish music and a excelent starting point if you haven't heard Chico Buarque music and fine poetry before, you should try this. For collectors and good music lovers :)
