Minor Early Works by Haydn.......2006-11-02

Neither the included Piano Concerti (or Concertinos as they are called here) nor the String Trios are major Haydn works. The composer did not seem particularly interested in the forms, nor did he pursue developing them as he did with the symphony, the string quartet, or the piano trio. The works presented on this disc (comprised of Piano Concertino in C, Hob.XIV:12; in F, Hob.XVIII.F2; in G, Hob.XIV:13; and in C, Hob.XIV:11; and String Trios in D, Hob.XI:11; and in C, HOB.V:16) are from relatively early in his career, some of them written even before he took up his lifelong position at the court of the Eszterhazys, the rest written early in his Eszterhazy tenure.

The concertinos are scored for keyboard (in this case played on an Erard fortepiano from 1893), two violins and cello, with the fortepiano much to the fore. They are all in three movements -- fast, slow, fast -- and none makes particularly difficult demands on the players. Perhaps they were primarily intended for domestic use, initially in the Eszterhazy family circle and, after they were published, in other similarly music-loving households.

The D Major string trio was written to include the baryton, a fretted bass-viol-like string instrument played by, or at least favored by, Haydn's patron, Nicolaus Eszterhazy. The Trio is probably more familiar in its guise as a flute, violin and cello trio as arranged by Johann Nepomuk Hummel. It has a modestly interesting contrapuntal finale. The C Major trio was written for two violins and cello, almost never heard now, and was probably composed before Haydn's Eszterhazy employment. It spirited outer movements framing a rather stodgy minuet.

The playing on this disc is acceptable without being outstanding. The late nineteenth-century Erard fortepiano frankly sounds like an unconfidently regulated modern piano. Sabine Vatin, the fortepianist, is competent, as are her string-playing colleagues, the Ensemble d'arco, all of them members of the Luxemburg Philharmonic.

This is, as far as I know, the only CD that includes these particular works. They can be recommended for Haydn completists but I suspect their appeal will not go much beyond that niche group.

This splendid recording by Mr. Bradetich exhibits a fine example of the virtuosity and refinement in the technique of today's bassists. This extremely enjoyable recording of Mr. Bradetich's transcriptions for bass showcase his very natural musical ability through a variety of styles. The tone, the phrasing, the depth, it's all there and more! This is a very nice collection of pieces for the double bass recorded with precision and clarity. I hope that all bassists will add this c.d. to their library! As for Mr. Bradetich, I can't wait for the next album!

Very nice.......2006-02-05

I like cello stuff and Viola de Gamba pieces. This reminds me of the Viola de Gamba a lot. A very nice disc. If you like the low string sound and Haydn - you can't go wrong.

Haydn the Obscure.......2005-01-03

This excellent recording of 6 of Haydn's nearly unknown 126 baryton trios gives a sampling of some of the Master's most charming and gentle music. The baryton is similar to a viola da gamba and has a quiet, glassy sound that blends well with the viola and cello (three of the trios were written with violin rather than viola, but those are not included in this recording). The baryton can be bowed and plucked separately or simultaneously which adds to the variety of musical expression and also has a set of sympathetic strings which vibrate when certain harmonic resonances are plucked or bowed within the main string body along the neck.

Haydn wrote these works by order of Prince Esterhazy and they reveal two aspects of his genius: 1) While Haydn surely would have known that the baryton had limited appeal even in his own time (the instrument was played by only a very few people which may in part explain why it was the Prince's choice) and therefore so would his compositions for it, he nonetheless bequeathed it much very beautiful music and 2) Haydn wrote these works not as true trios, but with the Prince as the center of attention with the viola and cello supporting and expanding the range and depth of the baryton. Thus, he displayed both political and musical acumen.

Haydn began writing for these works in 1762 and stopped in 1775 when Prince Esterhazy began to take greater interest in opera (although several other baryton works were written later). The works chosen for this recording are mostly from the middle of this period. The forms are varied and include variations, a recitative, a fugue, menuets (including the 'alla zoppa' or 'limping' menuet which refers to its delightful syncopations), and more standard allegros and adagios. Yet this music is anything but standard; each movement is interesting and you'll notice harmonic and melodic surprises all through these pieces. The playing here is excellent and musical, with clean entrances and lovely melodic playing. The baryton's sound lends a certain melancholy and loneliness to this music and Hsu plays not with a little soul and the appreciation of Haydn's wonderful imagination is evident.

I'm delighted that these works are being recorded. I'm surprised that they haven't been transcribed for other musical combinations that aren't reliant on historical instrumentation. However, the baryton is unique as is the music written for it by Haydn and they cannot fail to please the sensitive listener.

This CD took my breath away. Haydn's baryton trios are full of the same beautiful, and occasionally witty, melodies as his other music, but the sound is unlike anything else I've ever heard. The reason is that these trios are played by a baryton (which sounds similar to a cello or viola da gamba), a viola, and a cello; as a result, the overall sound is deeper, richer, and more mellow than chamber music including violins or other higher-pitched instruments. The performances on this CD are impeccable, and the recording quality is as good as it gets. If the Barytone Trio were to record ALL of Haydn's music for barytone (well over a hundred compositions), one would simply never tire of listening to them. Incredible!

A gem - glowing and bright........1999-09-10

If you have never heard of a baryton, it is a six-stringed cello-like instrument (but with no pin) that has strings in the back of the neck which are plucked like a harp. This CD features John Hsu, a professor of music at Cornell University, and one of the world's premiere baryton players. You owe it to yourself to hear this warm and lyrical CD. And, if anyone ever asks you in what musical form did Haydn write the most works, don't make the mistake of replying "symphonies." Show your mastery of obscure classical music trivia and say "baryton trios!"

great cello playing - weird mix of pieces.......1999-10-31

Since Drachman is Piatigorsky's grandson and Brott was a student of Piatigorsky it is no wonder that the cello playing and musicianship on this cd is really great. The mix of pieces cover a broad range of styles. Some people may not like all of the selections. If you have a programmable cd player, then you are in luck and can program your stereo to skip the pieces you hate.
