The artists gathered together here hail from nations and cultures noted for the growing and export of coffee. As with this CD's companion release, Music from the Tea Lands, one senses the possibility of lucrative product tie-ins, but part of the proceeds from the album are earmarked for charity and any catchy idea that gets the music out there is a good thing. Like the luscious drink itself, the tunes come in many intensities and flavors, ranging from a light-as-air ditty from Peru, to the more complex vocal stylings of Colombia's Claudia Gomez, to Ricardo Lemvo and Makina Loca's earthy Afro-Cuban Congolese rumba. The album is a lively and fascinating travelogue, making landfall in Cuba, Kenya, Brazil, Uganda, Mexico, Zimbabwe, Costa Rica, Hawaii, and Peru. As with many other Putumayo projects, aside from its musical pleasures, this set would make an entertaining and educational experience for younger family members. --Christina RodenCustomer Reviews:

Not strong enough-this compilation is decaf.......2006-06-15
I used to have this CD,but I took it to a used CD store.
Its few highlights are Susana Baca,Ernest Ranglin,Thomas Mapfumo,James 'Bla'Pahinui&Ayub Ogada. The rest are easy-listening Buena Vista Social Club.
When it comes to Putumayo's themed compilations,I reccomend "Gardens of Eden" (sadly,it's out of print),"Music from the Tea Lands"(EXCELLENT!),"Asian Lounge".I am looking forward to "Music from the Wine Lands"--considering I live in the Wine Country.Hopefully,"Music from the Wine Lands" won't be snooze-inducing like this one.

Groovin' at the Copacabana.......2006-07-28
Highlights-
1)Maria Moita-A retro,'50s styled song with a florid saxophone solo. For all its perkiness,it's about domestic violence.Despite its grim subject matter, the song is beautiful.
2)Outro Lado-A jazzy song from Zuco 103.Perfect music for relaxing with a cold margarita or mojito. And to think the song is about an unfaithful lover!
3)A Historia de Morena-Max de Castro blends a Hammond organ with a horn section to make a funky song. It's a very inventive song--and it's all about a woman who dances wearing nothing but body paint at Carnival.
4)Lagoinha-Carlinhos Brown recently contributed tracks to Bebel Gilberto (the peppy "Aganju"&"Jabuticaba" if you're curious)This song confirms why he's one of Brazil's greatest percussionists. He spices it up with Middle Eastern violins.
5)Mas que nada-A space age version of a Sergio Mendes classic.Yes,I'm using the term "space age" in its 50s&60s retro meaning.
6)Sou do bem-A joyous reggae-funk samba song.Has the strange cuica,a friction drum which could be called the Brazilian theremin.
7)Beleza-An upbeat hymn to beauty.I once had all 5 of my CDs on shuffle, and the CD player played this song, then Chico Cesar's "Beleza mano" on his self-titled CD.
8)Coco do Mundo-A delightfully weird, syncopated song. The singer,Viviani Godoy, looks like the Brazilian Jennifer Aniston. This is one of those "Must Hear Again&Again" songs.
This is an enjoyable album.Makes you think of the beaches in Rio....
Loved It.......2006-07-26
But this is a fabulous cd. Putumayo really knows what he is doing. This is more like the pop side of this genre. It's really good.
LOVE IT!.......2006-07-22
Seriously, though, this collection is a refeshing change from the usual sad offerings from the American music scene. Getting to know the artists who are included has made me want to find more of their music. So, it's educational (and lifesaving!) as well as wonderful to listen to.
I highly recommend it to anyone who would like to branch out and spread their wings musically.

Ten years after Beleza Tropical Volume 1 turned the world on to the popular music of Brazil (MPB), along comes volume 2 to bring us up to date. The first volume did a great job covering the 1960s and '70s; volume 2 does an equally impressive job in focusing on the late '80s and the '90s. The MPB scene is as vibrant as ever. Elder voices of the movement like Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, and Sergio Mendes have recently put out some of the best work of their careers, and you'll find wonderful examples of that here. The new generation of MPB stars are also amply represented--Marisa Monte, Daniela Mercury, the late Chico Science, Moleque de Rua, Os Paralamas Do Successo, and others all contribute excellent work. The songs incorporate the technological changes of the past decade and meld elements of rock, jazz, funk, reggae, and African music with the rich traditions of Brazil. The result is music that is coherent, edgy, and creatively compelling. This compilation is very well sequenced, so that it doesn't sound like a hodgepodge of styles, but instead flows flawlessly from tune to tune. --Jeff GrubbCustomer Reviews:

César's songs are redolent of the melting pot that is northeastern Brazil. He favors the region's loping forro and frevo rhythms, but tosses in liberal doses of samba-laced and straight reggae and a bit of rock, all processed through an easygoing Tin Pan Alley catchiness. His nasal tenor vocals are surrounded by choirs of backup singers, perky accordions, and rip-roaring percussion, plus aggressive brass charts on the uptempo numbers, and airy strings, woodwinds, and acoustic guitars on the ballads. Born a generation later than Milton Nascimento, Caetano Veloso, and Gilberto Gil, César shares their passion for melody and the slurred, luscious intricacies of the Portuguese language. Although his work is consistently charming, it's also seldom more than that. That being said, this well-crafted album of tropical pop is perfect for al fresco brunches, dance parties, and other festive occasions. Copious liner notes and complete lyric translations are provided. --Christina RodenCustomer Reviews:
Brazilian soda pop.......2006-06-16
This is a fun album. It's Brazilian bubblegum pop. It's different from American pop music, and not something you'd hear on "American Idol." (Can anyone imagine Taylor Hicks belting out "Mama Africa" or "Beleza Mano"???)Chico Cesar has an infectious sense of FUN.That's what makes this album worth buying. And none of the tracks are filler. It's PERFECT.
Simply fantastic.......2002-06-04
Diminutive Ceasar - King of Brazilian Music.......2001-12-01
Cesar grew up in one of Brazil's poorest regions, in the Northeastern state of Paraiba. Musically, it is one of Brazil's most fertile. Occasionally, the rhythms of the Northeast end up in Cesar's songs directly, such as the forro-inspired "Paraiba meu amor" (Paraiba, my love). The accordion and triangle as well as the up-tempo forro beat are straight from Cesar's birthplace. However, for "Paraiba meu amor", Cesar slows the typically frenetic forro beat, transforming the song into an uplifting nostalgic lovesong about the land he (and so many Brazilians) adore.
Another Northeastern folk form that shaped Cesar were the songs of the repentistas (troubadours). It is part of a tradition of oral history where the repentistas compete through improvised poetic duels. The album's opening track, "Papo Cabeca" is an interesting variation on this theme, essentially a "solo duel". The title of the song literally means "heady jive", though in Brazil the term also refers to the cool and smooth way movie stars and celebrities speak. A mix between a Brazilian rapper and a true repentista, Cesar mixes humor and politics in this funky reggae driven song dancing between dozens of ideas representing just about anything "head" related: Trotsky's crushed brains, Baptists's served on a tray, a nail head (hammer), the head of a group (tyrant), penis head (fellatio condom), stilted (socialite) etc.
The album includes many of Cesar's classics such as "Mama Africa", a song that has now become almost a national Brazilian anthem, telling the story of the struggles of a Brazilian working mother. The song is trademark Chico Cesar, mixing folklore, social commentary, and poetic lyrics with infectious MPB.
This collection also includes Cesar's moving lovesong, "A Primera Vista" (At First Sight). The melody is as touching as its heartfelt lyrics. Even a listener who doesn't speak a word of Portuguese would immediately understand that this is one of the most intimate declarations of love ever composed.
With Cesar's first North American release, it seems only a matter of time until audiences here wake up and learn what Brazilians have known for years and discover that Chico Cesar is one of the world's great songwriters.

Gardens of Eden is a multidimensional tool of anthology guaranteed to whisk even the most hardcore urbanites into the folds of Shangri-la. This collection of music from around the world is built around the theme of paradise on earth; the highly detailed liner notes include an overview of environmental organizations pledged to preserve vanishing resources. The subdued, lighthearted music is constructed around the soft caress of acoustic guitar, ukulele, African kora, Polynesian drums, Indian tabla, and sitar. Exceptional tracks include Ana Rita Simonka's unique fusion of bossa nova and Indian classical music, "Mais Filhos de Gandhi," and Keola Beamer's soothing, oceanic "Elepaio Slack Key." --Leslie R. It whisks you back.......2001-10-23
We were traveling down Rt. 1 in California and stopped in Big Sur. At one of the local shops, I heard the ever familiar Putumayo music and fell into a conversation with the store owner over our mutual appreciation for the Putumayo label. She then brought to my attention that her group was featured on Gardens of Eden. Naturally, we bought it.
The next day, when traveling through the misted mountain road, we were entralled by the way the music somehow choregraphed the scenery - or was it the other way around? All I know is that I will forever remember driving in the convertible, rounding each bend to music that swept away all of our cares and concerns.
I highly recommend this disk.

Wow! This is one HOT world music CD!.......2001-03-29
Gardens of Eden is one World Music CD that just knocked my socks off. Every cut is fantastic. The mix is varied, from Tibet to New Zealand to Brazil, yet the mix fits together. This is a very cleverly assembled montage of music and it is fast becoming one of my favorites.
To get a good idea of the songs, listen to the first cut, from Papua New Guinea, and then the Shweta Jhaveri. These are two of my favorites on the CD. The last song is the Tibetan one, no sample given here but it is wonderfully deep and interesting.

Fine but weird.......2005-04-23
and there's really a tangible kind of affinity between her and the audience.
But what baffled me, was that apart from the majority, there's: a) a couple of tracks which don't belong to the performance ao livo; b) i don't like people fiddling with the recorded live material (like in the ending of "Cariocas")
The CD is great for its acoustic songs (a must-have!) and very weird coz of all those things added to the input performance. But even if it spoils all the fun, the CD is still worth coughing up a few bucks :)
Enjoy tenderness experience.......2004-07-19
I love Brazilian music, but my experience with modern singers has improve after Adriana concert @ forum Barcelona 2004. It was a great experience and great performance.
Enjoy the disc, these songs will open your mind to a new Brazilian feeling.
Ear the lyrics!!, Vambora is my favorite (love and pain in the same song), but enjoy Cariocas (really a Brazilian hymn) and Vamos comer Caetano (fun cannibal song to Caetano Veloso) are amazing.

Think of One are an aggressively eclectic band from Antwerp, which is in the Flemish-speaking (Walloon) sector of Belgium. T.O.O. has been diligently attempting to evade fame by putting out seven albums under four aliases over five years. In fact, some collectors may already own a few of their releases unawares. The key to identifying their output is to be on the lookout for previously unimaginable juxtapositions of influences that can be from literally anywhere, as old as the ages or new as tomorrow. Big-band brass, clunky bass lines, electronica, quick-frozen beats, reggae, punk, samba, hip-hop and the proverbial kitchen sink are all grist for their mill. This time out, the tracks were composed and recorded in Recife, a city in Northern Brazil, sung in Flemish and Portuguese and mixed by an Englishman, two Belgians, a Frenchman and a Brazilian. Even amid the polyglot ambience that is presently taking the world and its music by storm, T.O.O. have relatively few forebears -- the French multi-kulti outfit Lo'Jo, and the wacky, faux-whatever 3 Mustaphas 3 outfit spring immediately to mind. But T.O.O.'s mad genius goes a step further -- the album is funny, enchanting, deranged, and absolutely essential. --Christina RodenAlbum Description
Think Of One see themselves as musical explorers. They love nothing more than traveling to distant countries to record with Moroccan, Inuit, Congolese or Brazilian musicians. Tráfico was written and prepared during the band's extended stay in Recife, Brazil where the band worked closely with several musicians and vocalists including 66-year old veteran singer Dona Cila do Côco, percussion wizard Carranca, and vocalists/percussionists Cris Nolasco and Ganga Barreto. Many of the tracks on Tráfico are infused with rhythms from the Brazilian northeast interspersed with ambient keyboards, thundering horns, quirky call-and-response vocals in Portuguese and Flemish, a cavalo marinho rhythm which mutates into a neo-punk jam, strange stories hummed in Antwerp dialect and some remarkable avante-jazz horn arrangements performed by a quasi-big band.

My heart has gut strings.......2006-11-29
Samba's Ur-text.
Take a gut string guitar in hand, put this album on, and it will teach you everything you need to learn about playing the guitar and how to unlock its poetry.
Pair it with Joao Gilberto's Voz e Violao, and you'll have all you need to become a guitar poet-laureate. A complete gut-string guitar education on two CDs.
That is, if you can stop yourself from laying the guitar down and leaping up to dance!
It does not get more real.......2005-05-07
I know for a fact that the songs by them and I assume the others, could not be more Real and representative of the authentic samba of the streets.
Trust me it does not get more real. The music is as lovely as the spirit of these people. To be poor in Rio in 1989 was not a pretty thing, yet they carried on with dignity and bright spirits intact. I shall never forget them. Thanks to Rounder for recording their ernest efforts.
Beautiful music.......2004-08-19
the real deal.......2004-03-06
As she sings, "Samba suffers, but it doesn't die" - suffers at the hands of ignorant reviewers, for one thing! Carvalho's respect for the true legends and masters of her chosen musical form is well-known. I am sure she would disapprove in the strongest terms of being used as an example of why one should "avoid" the great singers and songs on this timeless compilation.
