Sound System Dub

Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Alpha and Omega's Sound System Dub is their first official U.S. release, even though they've had several titles available as imports. Purveyors of the dub/reggae style, the duo effortlessly composes meditative tunes that both relax and comfort the listener. This is especially evident on Sound System Dub, with all of the tracks being remixed versions of songs selected from their seven prior releases. Highlights include the previously unreleased "Africa/Ethiopa," as well as the liquid sounding-dubs "Who Is the Ruler" (which includes vocals from Woodbridge), the repetitive bass of "Sharu Att Our Aunt," the ethereal "Dub Flute," and the album's opener, "Rastafari." Sound System Dub serves as the perfect introduction to new fans since this is a 'best of" of sorts, and because these tracks are all worthwhile newly-remixed versions, this album also does a good job of appealing to longtime fans. For fans of expertly-crafted, inventive reggae, Alpha and Omega's Sound System Dub is highly recommended. — Greg Prato, All Music Guide

5 out of 5 stars Great record.......2006-08-02

Now this is one great CD by a great underrated artist. This record when it came out became one of the reords for me of that year. Gary Clail was able to produce very innovative music that still had a danceable beat; not to forget that he was also politically very very astute. Standout track Human Nature is simply fantastic. There are other gems in this collection such as Food Clothes and Shelter etc. since this is a sound-system record the reggae and dub influence is very strongly felt along with the hard post-punk rhetoric.

5 out of 5 stars What?.......2005-01-07

I agree with Mr Viberg's statement that the 90's had some awesome dance music. Most of it awesomely bad.

To say that "The Emotional Hooligan" is 90's dance music and then to effectively describe it as a collection of fun-tracks...I'm stumped, stymied, utterly confused.

At least try listening to it again. And this time try to visualise a real world around you.

Not being horrible Chris, just a bit staggered.

I am totally addicted to this album. I've really liked all the dnss stuff that i've heard but this is just better than anything. I think it's got just the right amount of everything (punk, funk, dubness) on this album. It's like they've really worked on their formula of what's good and what is not. It is easily their most consistent offering to date. i'm going to have to go and listen to it again in a minute. check out the track blood flow, it is just amazingly funky and danceable with a bit of anti-bush/rumsfeld lyric thrown in by calvin. buy it if you want to shake your ass to something classy.

No, it's ok.

I'm not some swivel-eyed fanatical fan, extolling the virtues of my music world hero.

Gary Clail, however, is someone who knew something was fundamentally wrong, long before most of us had any idea our situation was that bad.

Listen to other things he has produced. It helped me over a coule of hurdles when I was trying to work out what was wrong with our common view of the world.

He's also a great communicator.

If I'm going to say anything fan-like, it's that I never tire of listening to his music.

It's more relevant to our situation today than ever.

3 out of 5 stars End Of The Century Party [ECD].......2001-02-21

this cd is good and is what you can considder the beginning of Gary Clail his experimental face where he takes regae to another face. This cd is however the beginning of it all. On 04/06/1993 a better cd than this was release. The dreamstealers it is called. If you want to learn something about the evolution of regae according to Gary Clail you should buy this cd and Dreamstealers on top of it. However it seems that dreamstealers is so popular that is is not available anymore just anywhere you start looking but I can asure you that is is worth the look!

...if i knew what one was.

delightfully groovy stuff from my hero calvin johnson, the K records/beat happening/halo benders guy. you wanna know what this sounds like? try imagining beat happening--with chops--auditioning to be james brown's backing band. (they wouldn't be chosen, of course, but they might just come up with something just as cool.)

1 out of 5 stars Calvin Johnson is a better clerk than musician.......2004-04-10

Stay in the office, Calvin. Do what you're naturally talented at: organizing art scenes; keeping the independent scene alive; keeping people positive about making art; being a great ambassador for independent music.

Calvin, for God's Sake STOP making horrible music accentuating your awful voice and your lame, now trite, ideas. Please stop. People who like this music like you, not the music, and if they claim to like the music they're lying to build their indie cred. Stop this horrible joke.

This guy is loved b/c he started something great, NOT because he's actually a capable musician. DNSS is a terrible project that puts out horrible albums devoid of real musicianship and chock full of pretentious, overly precious preening over boring, poorly executed ideas.

Just retire Calvin. Please, for the good of the indie scene -- just stop lowering the artistic bar.

5 out of 5 stars salsberry soothin.......1999-10-11

The best album on the K records label, Dub Narcotic is my drug. This album will shake your brain loose. This album mimics a Dub Narcotic show and is great.

4 out of 5 stars Shake yo puddin'.......1998-07-16

Frankly an album I love for it's goofiness and great sound. Shake the Pudding in my favorite song on the album, but don't over look the other tracks such as "Monkey hips and Rice" and "Boot Party". If ya liked the vocals on the Halo Benders, you will love this...

5 out of 5 stars Start Bouncing!.......1998-05-12

A very groovy project of a collection of studio musicians with the voice from the Halo Benders. Dance-around-the-room beats with words strung together in nonsensical phrases. If you can listen to "Shake-A-Puddin'" without bouncing, then call a mortician 'cause your dead.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars a great cd..........2001-10-10

This is a great cd,but dont expect any pounding heavy dub workouts like some other On U stuff, this is quite a restrained affair, sparse and melancholic...that is where its power lies ,in its splintered echo and plaintive keyboard patterns. Its an intriguing cd, and draws you in as it progresses, reflective and thoughtful...
Historically,ON U had a lot of difficulty being accepted by the London reggae community in the late 70's....people generally thought that roots music produced anywhere outside Kingston JA,just couldnt be the real deal, and on u had further difficulties in that their sound engineer,Adrian Sherwood, horror of horrors, was white! To increase their difficulties, onu were taking a downright weird approach to dubwize, which orthodox roots fans found difficult to accept.History in retrospective tho,has viewed the whole story VERY differently, and it is now acknowledged that good reggae CAN come out of places other than JA (See Pressure Sounds release for great UK roots album,"Dont call us Immigrants").Also,ONU employed the best of the best uk/ja roots talent...the radics, congos,Creation Rebel,Dennis Bovell,Prince Far I,all got involved in the ONU experiment....ON U pre empted so much of the weirdness present in sounds like Xterminator label, distorted ragga dubs, junglist and drum and bass tunes...
This cd is excellent, but due to its poignant and restrained mood, maybe it isnt the best example, for those uninitiated, into the onu vibe...Its charm for me its its real landscape sparseness, and endless minimalist echo, with lonely keyboard pieces weaving in and out of the mix...a perfect cd for a long journey,or to carry you over into dreams....For pounding heavy onu vibes?Try "Stoned Immaculate",or "Pounding Systems",both by top notch members of JA and UK roots reggae fraternity. Some of the criticism of Adrian Sherwood's work is definitely justified ,but he also definitely deserves a respectable place in the hallowed annals of roots reggae history...He really did create good sounds,as "One way System" proves.Yeah, nice and subtle.

3 out of 5 stars More minimal than most On-U stuff........2000-10-20

"Socca," the opening cut, begins with some fairly steady percussion, growing gradually more textured as a bass slowly materializes in the mix -- a very quiet bass, really. The CD doesn't start sounding like any sort of reggae, let alone dub, for a couple of minutes, and even then -- once keyboards and horns cut in -- the music remains much more spare and simple, and even *colder,* than most dub I've heard. It doesn't sound remotely like other Dub Syndicate releases like the LIVE 1991 thing or ECHOMANIA, either, which are much richer and varied. The remainder of the album follows the same pattern --some sort of dub minimalism has been undertaken on this release, leaving a LOT of space around and between the notes unfilled, and noticeably so. That makes it kind of INTERESTING, but certainly NOT the best place you could begin exploring this band. If I hadn't heard their much more engaging other releases, mentioned above, this CD might have made me think twice about exploring the band further, which indeed would have been unfortunate... If you don't know Dub Syndicate, the LIVE 1991 thing is a much better starting point, also interesting in that there really aren't that many good dub CDs that have been recorded live.

4 out of 5 stars A collection of relaxed house music.......2005-05-09

"How is house music relevant today?" So begins the press kit to Dubtribe Sound System's "Baggage." Instead of the usual "this band rocks" fluff, the kit contains an impassioned history of the group, complete with philosophies behind the music. Such handwringing seems more the province of pedantic hip hop bloggers, rather than purveyors of warm, organic house music.

Thankfully, Dubtribe has not let existential doubt get in the way of making good music. "Baggage" is a collection of relaxed house music, paced like a DJ set; each song flows seamlessly into the next, simulating the legendary Dubtribe live experience. Highlights include the bassline-driven "Nothing is Impossible" and the epic "Do It Now," the disco song to end all disco songs.

Some of the greatest dub albums are jam sessions. Think of Lee "Scratch" Perry's genius Black Ark recordings in the '70s or Adrian Sherwood's early experiments in noise with On-U Sound. New York City punk-soul outfit Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and Dub Narcotic's salaciously deep-voiced producer Calvin Johnson had already recorded together at Johnson's Olympia studios for JSBX's 1998 album, Acme. Around the same time, during a two-day session, the artists laid down the nine tracks that comprise this loose, sprawling, eminently lovable studio album. JSBX was the house band, Johnson the mischievous frontman. So what d'ya get? Plenty of echoed harmonica, deep bass drums, James Brown-style squeals, and lyrics that focus mostly on food and being cool ("Banana Meltdown," "Chicken Legs," "Frosty Junction"). "If you come to my town," Calvin sings on the 10-minute funkafied "Fudgy the Whale," "you've got to know all 16 dances." Damn right! --Everett True

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars No Dub, bub.......2004-02-10

I love JSBX, but Dub Narcotic is lame. Skip it, this shizzle aint worth a free download, let alone $14.98. If you want JSBX dub remixes, do it yerself, skip this tripe.

5 out of 5 stars Love Ain't On The Run........2001-02-21

I can tell you one thing I loved this record! It's like one big jam session. It features some new tracks as well as some re-worked tracks from xtra acme USA. I loved Xtra acme as well as Acme and this album seems to go deeper inside these albums getting a more gritty sound. Calvin Johnson from Dub Narcotic sound system does a lot of lead vocal work on this while Spencer shouts in the background in agreement to Johnson's ramblings, giving encouragement in his Elvis in heat vocal style.

Johnson's vocal style is more out there in fact that it doesn't work but it does, you know in the context of this album he is a good singer his deep voice goes with the vibe. You may remember his collaboration with Beck on One foot in the grave his voice was put to good use as it is on this album where we get a kinda Johnny Cash kinda thing going on in tracks like Love ain't on the run and Fudgy the whale. So all and all this is in my opinion a top album.

5 out of 5 stars yummy.......2000-01-04

this album sounds like johnny cash and fat elvis went insane, got real drunk and turned on a tape recorder.

4 out of 5 stars This CD is ment to be played loud!.......1999-10-05

Like always the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion compines their punk funk blues to make for a great time. Though not alone this time- The Dub Narcotic Sound System joins them to make some of the most freeborn expressionalism rock this world has ever known. Guaranteed to keep your feet tapping. However, there are some things that drag this CD down. During Frosty Junction there is a small annoying melodica solo and Chicken Legs has an distorted echo effect to Calvin's voice, both taking away from the song. On most every song Calvin sings lead. For those that haven't ever heard him, he sounds like a Beck that can't (or doesn't try to) sing right... who cares though- The CD sounds really good for those who like rough jammin' - Go For It!

Album Description

The Jamaican record label, Kariang, linked up to have their artists collaborate on a different kind of album...one which sends a positive message about unity and culture through lyrics, music and sounds. It touches the very roots of the Caribbean heartbeat. Much of the music is African village drum oriented, and the mix is as hard as any dancehall riddim out there. Producer/DJ, Yossi Fine has toured the world spinning as the Ex-centric Sound System, perfecting the songs and sounds of this recording....these songs are the Afro-Riddims. Produced by Yossi Fine @ King Solomon's Yard & Kariang Studies, Jamaica, WI. Features Anthony B, Brezident Brown plus others.

With Out of Your Mind, Dub Narcotic Sound System join the pantheon of Beck, Money Mark, and the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion as loopy experimenters in rock, rhythm, and soul. The album, their second full-length outing, has a funky carnival midway of sounds ranging from the lo-fi organ wailings of "Basemess" to the busted-flat-in-Chicago blues of "Papa's Got a Brand New Burnbag." Riff-heavy hits like "Teenage Time Bomb" and "Shock Mount" are dance-floor pleasers, but the LP also has quiet moments, like the moody jazz of "Dub Narcotic's Delight." Dub Narcotic Sound System leader Calvin Johnson takes a radical departure from his groundbreaking indie band Beat Happening to become this generation's James Brown, an idiosyncratic cheerleader for getting loose and going wicked-bad. --Lois Maffeo

4 out of 5 stars wicked bad.......1998-12-23

for those of you who love the lonelyness of listening to music nobody else can share with you and dancing like nobody else dances this will perfectly suit your needs. don't get me wrong - i played out of your mind to several people and some did like it but it's no music to march to, to wave the american (or as in my case the german) flag at. it's teenage riot time. it'S the music for fast train rides, when you stand between cars and see small portions of the rails under your feet. one can dance to it and one can cheer to it during bumpy rides up to the black forest. I wish to listen to it sitting on a huge log drifting north towards olympia, wash. and hitting puget sound with it. 4 stars because the halo benders occupy the 5ht. thanks cal! next time you should get liz phair as a duet partner.
