Customer Reviews:
Welcome to Monsieur Gainsbourg's haunted mansion of love!.......2007-02-16
Ok, this album caught me off guard. This is one strange, beautiful and amazing piece of music. Let go as Monsieur Gainsbourg takes you by the hand and walks you through the twisted halls and rooms of his mansion of love. Spooky and exhilarating. Sometimes boardering on strange halloweenish music. Lamenting sappy piano song turned honky tonk break down. Capitan Cook R and B weirdness. Styles and forms of music that would usually not do me right, make me beg for more. Totally moving and manic. Who else can talk through basically an entire album and make it sound this great? I know who can, S.G. can. I love this. This seals my Gainsbourg fanaticism. I'm a Serge addict. Please help yourself and get this.
Excellent, but not as an Introduction to Serge.......2004-03-03
This is another classic album from Serge from around the time when he was really doing his best and most challenging work. However, I would definitely not recommend this as a starting point to get into Serge's work since it is probably his most difficult album and is less immediately satisfying than many of his other albums. Melody Nelson is still the best place to start if you are curious about Serge because it is simultaneously his best and most accessible album. If you have heard some of his other stuff though, you are more likely to 'get' this album and not dismiss it after a couple of listens. Definitely his most 'prog rock' album, a very weird listening experience indeed (and the 2 or 3 spoken word interludes over minimal music are kind of frustrating for non-French speakers like myself!). On a side note, I would disagree with the previous reviewer who says that his is his most 'pimpy and 'swanky' album, in many ways it is the album that is least in that sleazy vein, since it is just so odd. If you really want a CD that conjures up images of Serge sitting on a red velvet couch smoking a pipe Hugh Hefner style, listen to Vu De L'Exterieur instead. That's Serge at his pimpin' best!
GAINSBOURG'S UNIVERSE.......2003-05-02
SERGE GAINSBOURG has never been better in establish a concept thematicelly in terms of words and music. Each piece of this wonderful opus has a musical setting that is coherent in it's ensemble.32 minutes of pure joy and delight. The famous GAINSBOURG talking voice over was of course used before in recordings like JE T'AIME MOI NON PLUS,INITIALES BB and the previous concept album HISTOIRE DE MÉLODY NELSON,but never with that panache with the lyrics.VARIATIONS SUR MARILOU can résume GAINSBOURG's whole catalogue of themes and obsessions.Sit down, forget your presomptions about the often called dirty man of FRENCH music and listen to signifiant music by a creatively inspired artist. If you are wondering about the meaning of the lyrics of VARIATIONS SUR MARILOU,it's actually about woman masturbation. No kidding here, just the truth.
Storytelling with minimal instrumental backing.......2002-04-01
Five years after the masterpiece "Histoire de Melody Nelson", Serge Gainsbourg recorded another concept album. Like on "Melody Nelson", most songs on "L'homme à tête de chou" are spoken storytelling with instrumental accompaniment. On "Melody Nelson" the instrumental parts were played by an orchestra and a rock band but on this album it's a band alone. The music is even more minimalistic than on "Melody Nelson" though there are a few dramatic parts. At first I thought that this album isn't even real music, just storytelling with some instrumental backing. And I thought that it would be completely impossible to listen to for somebody who doesn't speak French. But after listening to it for a few times, I realized I had been wrong. The music may be extremely minimalistic but it's definitely good music. And there are a few songs with sung vocals, most notably "Marilou sous la neige" (Marilou Under the Snow). My French isn't perfect so there's a lot in the lyrics that I don't understad. But despite this, it's not hard to see that "L'homme à tête de chou" is a masterpiece.
Pimpy swanky lounge music.......2001-06-22
Serge Gainsbourg has many styles, this album represents his most pimpy and swanky of those styles. His voice is laid just so lightly over electric guitars and he sounds as if he is sitting in a dark room on a red velvet couch smoking a pipe, Hugh Hefner style. This is a truly great Serge album that is harder to find than most of his other works and is not to be missed.

Storytelling with minimal instrumental backing.......2002-04-04

There are also a lot of bonus tracks on this cd release. "L'ami caouette" is a lot of fun. And so is "Sea, Sex and Sun", a disco song which is probably meant to be self-parody. The English version is even funnier in all its sleaziness. "Good-Bye Emmanuelle" is from an erotic movie with the same title, perhaps not Gainsbourg at his best. "Le Cadavre Exquis" and "My Lady Heroine" are a lot better. In the end of the cd there are two excellent songs are from an album that Gainsbourg wrote for Catherine Deneuve. "Ces petits ries" was actually written already 15 years earlier. A very different version of it can be found from the album Percussions.
a masterpiece.......2001-12-28
This album is a masterpeice for several reasons:
1) it is a full-blown rock opera, with a beginning, an apogee, and an end.
2) it uses "broken rhymes", which Gainsbourg invented with this album, and are now used by 1000s of artists.
3) the music is excellent, and very forward-thinking for the time
4) the lyrics are a poetic bliss (if you speak French, that is) - maybe Giansbourg's best poetry.
Just to clarify one thing: the review currently listed as the only review of this album says that Gainsbourg talks about a man masturbating. It's absolutely false. The storyline is in fact quite different: it's about Gainsbar falling fatally in love with Marilou, his hairdresser. There is a song in the middle where Marilou plays with herself and falls into "les malices de sa paire de Lewis". Gainsbourg then kills Marilou out of paranoid jaleousy, and finishes by going insane, his head symbolically transformed into a cabbage.
The lyrics explore the relationship of passion , lust and destruction, this with the satirical humour of master Gainsbar. l'homme a tete de chou is in fact the maturation of Gainsbourg's first rock-opera on a similar topic: Melody Nelson.
As usual with Gainsbourg, the music, however great it might be, is written to support and build the poetry of the texts. Not the opposite. This doesn't diminish the music. On the contrary, it gives it meaning. It forces gainsbourg to mastermind poetry and sound created for one another.
It's frustrating to see people listen to this album without speaking French. May it motivate you to dig into the language.
Weird ...but great!.......2001-04-02
This is possibly one of the weirdest records serge, or anyone put out in the 70's... this is basically serge teamed up with his illustrious co-conspirator Alan Hawkshaw (who put out some incredibly hard funkin soundtrack work at around this time)... Anyhow this is a really weird combination of vaguely progish synths and electric pianos mixed in with serge's incredibly loud spoken word parts... not really songs so much as little vignettes or chapters telling the story ... which basically amounts to a man who masturbates so much his brain turns to lettuce... what a premise! and this is the music to get that story acros! ... completely wacked out sounds, crazy mixes, bizarre bizarre bizarre... not really funky just plain wacked... not the best place for a Serge beginer but if you already dig him you need this masterpice of a record... the recent french remasters sound incredible and are well worth tracking down...

One of the essential records to understand Gainsbourg music.......1998-07-15
This record is one of the most important records in Gainsbourg's discography. It shows him desperate, inspired by the reigns of the departed woman, of the lost sex provider, and the poetic femme fatale, all recalled by a lunatic, alcoholic poet who struggles with his pain in a majestic monologue of illness and madness. I am an not an english (excellent) speaker, but, as the Melody Maker magazine rates, I rate this record BLOODY ESSENTIAL, I mean it, please, I really mean it... Sergio Coddou copoval@cmet.net
A major contribution to French poetry and music.......1998-06-16
Gaisnbourg was to French music what Miles Davis was to Jazz: A multi-talented artist, poet, song-writter, composer, innovator, talent recruiter, stage star, drug-addict, semi-shy, semi-bitter, semi-provocative, man of minority. He started with traditional Jazz and French music. He explored, created, and fusioned many styles, most of them excellent. Without him, French music would be missing several major facets of its modern scene.
This album is a key contribution in at least three ways: 1)It's his most accomplished story-album, where he walks the listener through his relationship with a frivolous lover. (structured a bit like a rock-opera). 2) the poetry is incredible beautiful and erotic 3)it uses "broken rhymes", one of Gainsbourg's inventions.
WARNING: If you think you can appreciate this album or artist by listening to a 20 sec. clip, than you probably won't like it. If you speak French, like Baudelaire, Verlaine, Chopin,(which Gainsbourg often recomposes in pop-style), edonism, and dislike puritans, P.C. people and you can sit still and experience an album for 45 mns, then you'll probably end up enthoused by this masterpiece.
