For the first time ever, this remastered 2 CD compilation represents the cream of Petula's groovy French language recordings. The 50 tracks concentrate on her 'Beat Years' from the early-to-mid-60s, including 33 songs never recorded in English such as the newly discovered Ye'-Ye' nugget, 'Donne-Moi'. 2001 release.

This is an excellent compilation of Petula's French recordings. It concentrates almost exclusively on her uptempo rocking songs, the exception being Un enfant, so anybody looking for her romantic songs should look elsewhere. Among the uptempo songs, there is one very obvious omission - Dans le temps (Downtown). So if you want a French greatest hits, Ses plus belles chansons is still the strongest collection available at the time of this review.

So what songs are here? There are French versions of Nobody I know, Hello Mary Lou, No go showboat, I know a place, A sign of the times, Round every corner, Gotta tell the world, A well respected man, Time for love, Please please me, Second fiddle girl, They call my guy a tiger, What do you want?, Save the last dance for me, Heart, Dance with me, Needles and pins, Calendar girl, She's a fool, Dance on, Judy Judy Judy, It's party time, You're the one, Hold on to what you've got, My love, This is goodbye, Foot tapper, Where do you go?, Cottonfields (a #1 hit for her in Singapore, this is a briiliant recording - I've heard many great versions of this song, but none better than Petula's - - pity she didn't do an English version), Anyone who had a heart and There goes my love there goes my life, also Ya ya twist (a translation of a Lee Dorsey song which was a #1 hit for her in France) and many other excellent songs. Many of these songs were never recorded by Petula in English.

I hope enough people buy this compilation to encourage the record company to release another 50 of her French tracks, this time concentrating on the ballads, although anybody who wants a comprehensive collection of her French recordings should go for the Anthologie series (nine volumes so far, with enough songs left for at least a tenth volume).

To sum up, this collection of songs shows that Petula could rock and roll with the best. You don't need to understand French to enjoy this collection - enough of the songs will be familiar to you already in their English language versions. Buy now - you won't regret it.

If you are as tired as I am of canned Christmas muzak, you will find this to be refreshing, beautiful, and uplifting for the season of Christ's birth.

I was looking for something different from all the popular American Chirstmas music that has been re-done so many times. Here is a collection that satisfied me, and will delight both Franco-phones and Anglo-phones (English speakers) Some of the pieces are very chant like, but others are lively songs with lots of energy. Especially notable are tracks # 18, Or vous trémoussez, pasteurs de Judée, # 13, Noe, Noe, and my personal favorite, # 27, O l'heureuse journée. You likely will not recognize any of the tunes, so it may take a bit for this album to sound like Christmas, but it quickly did for me. The ancient instruments employed also give the music a unique sound that is really neat. This is a CD worth purchasing

I am a musician and a medieval history buff, and first heard the Beauvais segments of this recording over the car radio, as I parked intending to do some Christmas shopping. I could not leave the car until the last note was sung and immediately began a search for the recording. The music is so...right, like a little time trip, haunting, triggering the imagination.

I really like this CD. Being a long-time fan of his singing style and melodious voice, about anything he sings gets my attention though. Still, it's a nice combination of songs.

Having sung most of the works on this album, I already knew they were moving and beautiful, but the crystalline voices of this ensemble, their blend and precision makes this a must-have for an lover of the genre.

This CD contains some of the most beautiful sacred christmas music ever written. The performances are exellent, and each piece follows the next in a perfectly balanced flow. One thing worth noticing is that in addition to the the most commonly heard version of In Dulci Jubilo by Scheidt it also includes the rarer and even more beautiful version by Buxtehude. That version is followed by the last cut, my own favorite Bach choral Ach mein herzliebes Jesulein. If you can't make it to church this christmas, listening to this record might be the next best thing.

Magnificat!.......2000-10-28

This is the most beautiful CD that I have ever heard. It has very religious overtones -- after all, it is "Music of the Nativity". Thus, it makes a delicious Christmas CD. The songs stir the deepest parts of my soul. The sound mix is prime and the performances, especailly the vocal and string renditions, are exceptional. The stand out songs are "Magnificat" and the two songs that follow it. This is like on a moonset/sunrise run on a big empty beach with the bright stars slowly fading in the violet hues of the gaining light. That is what this CD means to me. Check it!
