Album Description

This recording presents a selection of some of the least and the best known exponents of twentieth century Latin-American guitar repertoire, among them the internationally renowned Argentinian composer Máximo Diego Pujol, whose Elegy for the death of a tanguero is an elegant homage to his compatriot, the father of the classical tango, Astor Piazzolla. Leo Brouwer is found in unusually lyrical mood and two of Piazzolla's most popular songs are heard in an arrangement by Colombian-born guitarist Ricardo Cobo.

Perfection.......2006-02-05

What can I say? Every piece on this recording I love, and Ricardo plays them all to perfection. This CD is sure to get more play than most of my other CDs. If you like classical guitar check out all the Naxos label CDs, I own like 4-5 of them, and they are all excellent listening. This one I must say stands out to me, but mainly because of my preference for Latin guitar music.

Sensuous and poetic playing with amazing technique.......2004-08-17

Although I'm honestly tired of all the "Latin collection" CDs out there, this one is played by a "real" Latin and you can hear it from the first track. It is not only believable, but compelling. The poetry in Reis's two pieces (Track 2,3) is simply beautiful and Cobo's phrasing is refreshingly provocative rather than safe. This player's music is fluid, his sound silky and detailed, and his musical thinking exciting and natural. Although I have several versions of Piazzolla on guitar, these arrangements totally rock. Cobo's arrangement of "El Choclo" is dazzling, especially the last variation. Without saying more, every track on this recording is really special. Take it from a serious student of guitar and avid listener- this CD is a must-have if you like guitar.

An eclectic collection of guitar music, wonderfully played!.......2004-07-07

This is my favorite CD of Latin American guitar music. Ricardo Cobo is a Columbian guitarist currently living in Las Vegas and his playing is among the best I've heard. As the liner-notes indicate, this CD features some well-known Latin American composers as well as some who are virtually unknown. (Outside of the Cuban composer Leo Brouwer, all the composers whose music is featured on this CD are South American.)

The pieces by Manuel Pujol are particularly moving (his work in homage to Piazzolla is alone worth the price of the CD!), as are the two works by the little known composer, Dilermando Reis. Also worth mentioning is Leo Brouwer's piece 'Un Dia de Noviembre,' a beautiful modal ballad (in the natural minor 'Aeolian' mode) that sounds almost like 'new age music' but that is more interesting and subtle. I don't particularly care for the two pieces by Astor Piazzolla (the 1st and last tracks on the CD), as I don't think they fit well with the rest of the CD's music, but overall this CD has enough beautiful guitar music to warrant many listenings. Some of the slower pieces are reminiscent of the music of the brilliant Paraguayan guitarist/composer Agustin Barrios, whose music was neglected for too long but is now getting serious attention (I would recommend David Russell's recording of Barrios' music for solo guitar -- simply beautiful).

And with Naxos' extremely low prices, you really can't go wrong with Cobo's CD!

Great guitar CD.......2003-12-18

I've been waiting for this CD to come out. It was worth the wait. The pieces are familiar Latin guitar music. The playing is the best I've ever heard on any Cobo recording. His Latin soul comes through in this recording. With his superior technique he gets an amazing sound out of the guitar. The richness of this music comes through more with each listening. Buy this CD! You won't regret it.

If you like the tango or classical guitar, this is for you.......2003-12-15

I had looked forward to Cobo's release of this collection of Latin American guitar music. There are few players on the planet who can match his technique and sound (he won the prestigious Guitar Federation of America Competition in 1987), and fewer yet with such direct ties to Latin American music (he's a native of Colombia and has received that country's highest honors for accomplishment in the arts). The CD doesn't disappoint. Much of the music is familiar to guitarists, although not all from guitar renditions (Cobo has transcribed some popular tangos from piano or other mediums). Cobo's talent is apparent and consistent throughout. If you like the tango or similar music, and/or if you like to hear the classical guitar played well, you'll like this recording.

great performances of enjoyable pieces.......2006-03-11

David Russell is arguably the finest classical guitarist in the world, along with Manuel Barrueco and Paul Galbraith, and a few others. I have almost all Russell's CDs, and I enjoy them tremendously. Aire Latino is a collection of many of the best and most popular modern short pieces from Latin composers. Hearing his interpretation and flawless execution has rekindled my love for many of those pieces I once also played. Highly recommended!

It should have been earlier........2006-01-10

I mean the prize, of course. It's no doubt that David Russell is the best(not one of) when referring to 19th century(or style) music on classical guitar. In this album, every small piece is so attractive because of the romantic aspect in guitar, in
David. I own all the albums of David Russell. Although this one is not the best,it definitely deserve the prize, price and praize from guitar lovers from all over the world.

Thoughtful, Sensitive, and Skillful.......2005-08-08

This is a great performance for the very versatile David Russell. His playing is thoughtful and expressive, but also sensitive and not overly extraverted. His use of rubato is excellent on most tracks, and his constant contrast of dynamics, as well as vibrato, give the pieces on this album real life and emotion.

I had been performing 5 of the tracks on this album when it came out, so I can attest to the difficulty of many of these pieces, especially all three movements of the Morel "Sonatina." I can also say that his performances of these is very true; I could hear no incorrect notes , with the exception of some added notes in the first movement of "Sonatina," which I have since adopted myself for my own performance. His expressive interpretation is likewise impeccable on these tracks.

This record would be a great purchase for anyone interested in classical guitar, whether they are just getting into the genre or already have a large collection, or anyone interested in Latin American art music.

Transcendent Pleasure.......2005-04-26

Perfect! One will very rarely discover an album as finely constructed as this. The performer stands at the pinnacle of his profession, one who demonstrates mastery of the instrument and intimate understanding of the music. The selections are interesting, fresh and never boring. There is delight in the listening from beginning to end. Mr. Russell is quite simply astonishing as he unerringly takes the listener on a journey of unalloyed beauty. This is a disc you will relish again and again. If you love the guitar, you must have it.

A Wonderful CD!.......2005-02-17

A wonderful, beautiful CD. The fact that the music is all inter-related creates a beautiful atmosphere while listening. I know enough to know that this type of artistic endeavor is a collaboration; so kudos to David Russell, producer Rosalind Ilett and engineer Thomas Knab! I understand that this team has worked on many of David Russell's amazing recordings.

Arnold Schoenberg (1874-1951), creator of the "twelve-tone" musical system, wrote just twelve choral works beginning with the still-tonal Friede auf Erden ("Peace on Earth"). The best are gathered on this unique and much-needed CD. The Südfunk-Chor Stuttgart, founded in 1946, emphasizes the choral music of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Rupert Huber was born in Austria in 1953. He obtained his education as a conductor and composer at the Mozarteum Salzburg. He worked as an assistant to Leopold Hager and later on with Herbert von Karajan.

Tenor-lovers Alert!.......2001-02-25

For some of the most beautiful lyric tenor singing available on a disc, please sample this recent release on DGG.

Mr. Simoneau's recording are few and this one is particularly fine in its aria selection and the singing is simply above reproach.

This is a lyric tenor voice in the style of Schipa. Should you have doubts, listen closely to the aria "Una furtiva lagrima" from Donizetti's opera L'elisir d'amore. The pitch is perfect, the line is firm and the voice is beautiful in it tonal quality. The duet from Faust is sung lovingly and phrased to perfecton by this husband and wife vocal team, a feast of simple lyric beauty.

There are no fillers on this disc. Every duet and aria is a winner and I should perhaps note that since Mr. Simoneau's French diction is flawless, the arias from operas by Mehul and Halevy are particularly welcome. As a footnote, I should like to add that if you are able, find a copy of Simoneau's recording of the "Sanctus" from the Berlioz Requiem with Munch and the Boston Symphony. It makes all recorded competition sound amateurish.

An intriguing disc of varied choral works.......2004-01-12

Though this disc is described as containing the complete choral works of Arnold Schoenberg, this is slightly misleading. It only contains works for a capella choir and ignores those without an opus number (such as the canons). Nonetheless, it provides an interestingly varied selection of works: one early tonal work, three atonal, serial middle-period works and two late, largely tonal works.

The Three Satires, from 1925, are examples of Schoenberg's rather forced sense of humour. Tonal oder Atonal uses a note row that starts with a triad (Tonal) and then quickly subverts the tonal feeling so generated (oder Atonal), while Der neue Klassizismus (with added accompaniment of viola, cello and piano) is a nine-minute cantata whose words attempt (rather unsuccessfully) to poke fun at "Little Modernsky" (ie: Stravinsky): its music is, fortunately, considerably more worthwhile than its words.

The Four Pieces, written the same year, are, for the most part, austere yet expressive. The lusher last piece adds mandolin, clarinet, violin and cello to the ensemble. The Six Pieces for Male Voices, completed in 1930, strike me as probably the finest work on the disc, expressive, wide-ranging works written with immense contrapuntal skill.

The Three Folk Songs, a late--1948--work swings the disc back towards tonality. These settings elaborate the simple, tonal melodies with the composer's naturally gifted contrapuntal writing. Also tonal--if only just--is the 1907 work Friede auf Erden. From just after the First Chamber Symphony, this work pushes at the edges of late-Romantic chromaticism in a rather heatedly emotional call for peace. The disc ends with Schoenberg's last completed works: two of the three Modern Psalms (the composer died before the third was finished). I find them rather dry, though not without interest.

Pierre Boulez's rival recording is marginally more complete, and occasionally the performances there are more distinguished (though Rupert Hubert and the Südfunk-Chor Stuttgart are fine performers on this disc, and are well versed in the language). However, with Boulez's recording spilling onto a second disc and costing four times as much, the present disc is a fairly safe recommendation (though it's a pity that Arte Nova's rather skimpy documentation excludes the words).

an interesting experiment in vocal compositions.......2000-11-01

Schoenberg, the father of serialism, wrote a lot of very interesting music that doesn't always get a lot of play in the standard classical rep. This cd is showcase of some of those works, focusing on his all-vocal pieces. Sometimes pretty, sometimes disturbing, always interesting. Some of the more atonal pieces can be very hard to take if you're not interested in discordant music, but fans of classical experimentation and more 'difficult' music will be enthralled. The recording and performances are good. The liner notes are a bit on the brief side.

excellent collection of songs from the Cantigas!!.......1998-09-15

The Dufay Collective is a remarkable group of musicians who investigate and perform Early Music. Their version of some of the Cantigas is amazing and weaves in musica nad instruments from Spain, other parts of Europe and Northern Africa and the Middle East. Each cut is a revelation of performance. The packaging is creative and unique and adds to spirit of the recording. It sounds like contemporary music - I highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in Early Music!
