The Rough Guide to the Music of Indonesia

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
As Smithsonian Folkways' Music of Indonesia illustrates vividly, the archipelago known as Indonesia contains a vast array of music. This album takes a somewhat less academic approach to the styles than the label's other collections. While there's gamelan from CBMW, and a classic song from Waldjinah/Gesang, there's also a great deal of pop styles, especially dangdut, which has become the national popular music, borrowing from both Arab pop and Indian film to create silky, mellifluous grooves as exemplified by Rhoma Irama, Sandii, and 3 Mustaphas 3 bassist Sabah Habas Mustapha. But burrow deeper in this collection and there's Grup Bamba Puang, whose guitar styling could have come from Appalachia, or the entrancing (if odd to Western ears) sound of Ibu Maimunah Mochtar and Group. While it's impossible to cram everything onto one disc, this does an excellent job of showing some musical facets of Indonesia. --Chris Nickson

5 out of 5 stars An amazing record!.......2006-04-16

___________________________________________________________________________
This is simply an amazing record -- my favorite so far in the excellent Rough Guide World Music series. Featuring such sfnal Bruce Sterling moments as Sabah Habas Mustapha of the legendary 3 Mustaphas 3, a Balkan [Kosavar?] immigrant who had a massive Indonesian hit with "Denpassar Moon" (but had trouble getting paid); Sandii Suzuki, of mixed Japanese-Hawaiian ancestry and with a fine, flat, bare midriff, here singing a Malay song from north Sumatra; and Nasida Ria, an all-girl Islamic-pop (qasidah modern) band from central Java, who admonish us to have fun, but don't forget God. It's got a beat. You could dance to it.

Do try a few of the samples here, all prime examples of well-recorded, fairly-current Indo pop. Or try your library, which likely owns a copy. Don't miss this one. Ah, Surabaya!

Happy listening--

5 out of 5 stars Great music!!.......2007-01-17

The Rough Guide to World Music, Vol. 2 is a wonderful compilation of songs from around the world. I am so glad I added this to my collection. I actually purchased this for a cultural diversity fair we had at our hospital and it served perfectly as background music for the event. The variety of songs is great and they are each so unique and wonderful to listen to. I thoroughly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars A Potpourri of Pleasaure.......2000-10-12

Talk about diverse! This Rough Guide travels from Cuban son and the magnificent piano playing of Ruben Gonzalez to popular Indonesian songs and back again. One must have an open mind and broad tastes to be able to absorb the vastly divergent styles on this CD. However, each selection is superb on its own terms, and most of the music is danceable. If you are truly a connoisseur of world music, try this companion CD to volume two of the revised ROUGH GUIDE TO WORLD MUSIC.
