The Last Prophet

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com essential recording
The Last Prophet functions as an excellent, easy-on-the-ears introduction to the great Pakistani singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and his party. Featuring rarer selections of the ensemble's extensive repertoire and recorded without reverb effect, the CD meshes the party's amazing vocal art into songs that contain all the fervor that is the nature of qawwali while still retaining a rhythmic, melodious sound familiar to Westerners. "Maki Madni" is a luxurious, two-tempoed tune growing into a wonderful, exploding chorus in praise of Muhammad; "Gunj-E-Shakar" is special in its portentous, urgent cadence. While Nusrat's vocal expertise isn't as incredibly full and wide-ranged as in earlier recordings, this CD is still the better pick for those in need of a Nusrat introduction that's lighter in intensity than the wildest, most intense Nusrat and party. --Karen Karleski

5 out of 5 stars listen to the biggest luca fan ever.......2007-02-26

this is the greatest album i have ever heard and since its release i have not found a more timeless album other than rust in peace. you will be inspired and might even shed a tear. I cannot recommend this higher than if the cd was written by god himself.

5 out of 5 stars Novel and very impressive.......2006-04-24

You will either love or hate this stuff. Pompous, grandiose, glorious, over-the-top and brilliant. Huge chorus, full orchestra, masterful violin playing, and breakneck metal guitar work, all swirled together quite stunningly.

Metallica tried to do this with their S&M album. Some of that album worked great, but most of it felt like a "mashup" rather than a cohesive piece of music. THIS is what they were aiming for.

Imagine if Danny Elfman, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Metallica co-wrote a space opera. Yeah. Freakin' awesome. For anyone who loves musicals and metal, this will wonderfully fill both those desires simultaneously.

I'm really impressed. My daughter's favorite albums are System of a Down's "Mesmerize" and the Phantom of the Opera soundtrack. She loves Prophet of the Last Eclipse. 'nuff said.

5 out of 5 stars A defining masterpiece in symphonic metal.......2004-07-06

For those familiar with Luca Turilli's work, you know that he likes his music big, huge, bombastic, and sweeping in composition - which is both a turn off for some metal fans and the reason a good deal of his audience is rabid about his work. Love or hate his material, one would have a hard time denying the strength of his melodic sense and compositions, along with the fact that throughout his career he has kept upping the ante, making the music bigger and bigger and bigger.......

And then, there was Prophet of the Last Eclipse.

On this, Luca's second solo album, the sound has gone so through the roof it can barely even be seen anymore. This is big, this is powerful, this is in your face, but this is also stretching a few boundaries of what can even be called metal...rather, the music on Prophet of the Last Eclipse sounds like a hyperactive symphony from outer space, with a metal band guesting to back it up. There are almost 30 choir members on the album, in 4 seperate choirs, along with the String Quintet of Hamburg, Germany, plus a timpani player. Add to this Luca's normal guitar/bass/drums/keyboards/vocals band and his brand of epic composing, and you have one of the biggest and most pompous albums to come out since.. well, the last Rhapsody release actually. But this may be even more giant sounding, and the best thing about it is; it's of the same quality.

Prophet of the Last Eclipse is a conceptual work, telling an odd story revolving around love and apocalyptic prophecy on a distant planet. While not on the same level as a successful author's material, Luca manages to craft a short and interesting, as well as even a bit original (for science fiction), tale.
The album is also a nice evolution in Luca Turilli's sound in ways; first, as aforementioned, the album sounds like a symphony with a metal band as opposed to a metal band with a symphony. In the booklet, it's learned that Luca restrained himself guitarwise on this album in order to let the compositions and the classical instrumation come through a lot more. For this, he gains extra respect from me and what's good is that contrary to what most people would fear, the music is actually enhanced by a little less guitar. There are never any guitar parts battling with string parts for volume or attention, or any loose ends on the album, every part of the huge arrangements is placed within the songs tastefully and professionally. Although, once in a while the rhythm guitar work can get a bit lost in the large mix, but it doesn't detract a great amount - that's how big the orchestration is here. Second, there is now a good amount of a surprising element added to this music - an electronic influence ranging from techno-esque to dark and ambient....something of a crash course in awkwardness or metal suicide in print, yet on this album the new electronic elements are placed absolutely without flaw, meshing perfectly with the choirs, strings, and metal guitars and drums. This becomes apparent as soon as Aenigma, the album intro, hits with a dark sounding programmed beat that soon melts into one with the sounds and rhythms of the European Renaissance-era styled choir. After 2 minutes, the intro explodes into War of the Universe, an excellent speedy song with great vocals from Olaf Hayer and a shredding, aggressive violin/cello riff. Yes, that's 'violin/cello riff', and it shreds well right along with the thunderous drumwork and subtle little synth bleeps and bloops underneath the verses. Nice melodic guitar solo from Luca here as well. Next is Rider of the Astral Fire, where the creativity of the sound and Turilli's sense of melody really start to create some huge sparks. Excellent programming, rhythm guitar riffs, and even a good use of a children's choir can be found here. The first minute of the song is also sheer melodic brilliance, with a slow, pulsing, and dark intro building up to a galloping and positively glorious sounding viola/violin harmony with a heavy riff underpinning, taking a breather with some light keys before going into the first verse. Fantastic. Zaephyr Skies' Theme is a slower, ballad like instrumental with a gentle electronic pulse and some beautiful female vocalizations. Another major high point is the album's single, Demonheart, with some menacing programming, slashing guitar work, and an unbelievable chorus punctuated by a powerfully contrasting choir. New Century's Tarentella is another good showcase of the album's creativity, being a power-metalized rendition of classical Italian tarentella style music, though lacking a bit in the overall songwriting department. The album closer, the epic title track, is nothing short of stunning in parts and though with some weak links in the middle section, is a fitting climax for the album. Starting with the same Renaissance-styled choir heard singing in Aenigma, the song soon morphs into a ball of pure intensity, fading into a fanatical keyboard part and bursting into a crushingly heavy double bass drum attack, layered with orchestral strikes and a Latin-chanting male choir that brings almost frightening shivers. The verses also work well, after the song slows to mid pace, the female vocal in the middle part after the almost gothic keyboards is perfect, and the song closes with the same intense opening which slows down to a final, peaceful sounding Latin verse by the choir.

Overall this is one of the best, truly symphonic metal releases around. There is a track or two hindered by weaker songwriting, such as Timeless Oceans which has a few awkward melodies, and the album can also tend to give off a feeling of wanting more, but this is an album more than worthy of attention if you're not put off by the amount of symphonic elements involved. Superb.

5 out of 5 stars gorgeous -- Turilli never disappoints.......2004-02-26

Science fiction is a bastardized, inferior sub-genre of fantasy, which is a much broader and deeper category. Pure science fiction is pure garbage. The best works in science fiction -- Dune or Clifford Simak in novels, Star Wars in movies, etc. -- are just fantasy dressed up as sci-fi. The reigning master of symphonic fantasy metal is pretty much taking that tactic here, as he turns his considerable talents to a futuristic, occasionally electronic album that still retains the epic, choral, heavy, fast, technically perfect, wonderfully produced and indescribably brillant Rhapsody sound that has captivated the world of metal. At times this album has a heavenly beauty unmatched even by Turilli's past efforts, at other times it is as heavy and aggressive as the superhuman Dawn of Victory album. You should get this one even if you don't like Rhapsody. If you do, you should have gotten it a long time ago.

5 out of 5 stars Fantasy VS. Science Fiction.......2003-12-04

Rhpasody's guitarrist tried to be more creative this time and he really had it on. His first album was just the same as Rhapsody but with poorer vocals. In this second album he mixes science fiction with fantasy. The songs that most stand out are Demonheart, War of the Universe, Rider of the Astral Fire and Prophet of the last eclipse.
If you like symphonic power metal try this Cosmic Metal as defined by Luca Turilli and you'll surely love it.

5 out of 5 stars Arguably "The Best" English "Merry Widow ".......2006-09-12

This is the "Merry Widow" with English translation by Christopher Hassel sung by June Bronhill. I loved this rendition ever since I first heard it in about 1960. What's to love? First the translation is the best I've heard. The language doesn't sound "stilted" as some others. And, you can understand almost every word sung. Plus, the famous song, "Vilja" has some wording that moves me every time I hear it: The soprano sings, "Love me and I'll DIE for you!" with the word "die" somewhat emphasized. I don't know, there's just something "powerful" about someone saying they'd "die" for love! AND, at the end of "Vilja" the chorus and soprano raise to a crescendo hitting a high note together. In many renditions the chorus is heard but not the soprano on the final high note. In THIS version, the soprano, June Bronhill, can be heard rising to the final high note with an incressing crescendo and fortissimo louder than the chorus and holding the final high note---which gives a very thrilling effect as she holds that final note, I assure you!

The "problem" is that this June Bronhill, Reid, and Hassel version is hard to find on CD. For example, this CD is made in Holland and "there is one left" so it says on Amazon. But, if you can find it, I think it would be very much worth a listen. Then, after hearing it, if you think there's a "better" Merry Widow, please let ME know! Thanks. Email:boland7214@aol.

5 out of 5 stars Very Nice........2001-11-30

This CD is a compilation of prayers for the common person's day-to-day affairs, such as before going to bed, after eating a meal. The english translation follows the Arabic. There are also a few nice nasheeds/songs. The only thing that would have improved this CD and allowed the listener to benefit from it even more is if it came with the written text of the prayers so the listener could learn them too. You can't really pick up the proper prononciation ecetera just by listening to the CD because its obviously read by professionals, so kind of at a fast pace. However, I know you can for sure find these prayers in books elsewhere, as they are all well-known. Overall, a nice CD to listen to that will hopefully inspire us to remember God in our daily activities just as the Prophet did with these daily prayers.

5 out of 5 stars Words and Songs of Comfort and Peace.......2001-09-20

I don't pretend to be Muslim though I've read the Koran, Dawood translation (Penguin) two and three times over. This CD is a production of Mountain of Light, based in London. Yusuf Islam, formerly, Cat Stevens, is more than a narrator, he is a translator. The album is divided into the following segments: Prayers, Night, Dawn, Day, and Evening. Given the events of 9/11/01, I shall not speak of "light to my left, to my right, in front of me, behind me, above me, below me", but I shall share the following prayer so beautifully translated and delivered:

The Prayer: Ayat Al-Kursi

On the authority of Anas -
May Allah be pleased with him who said:

I heard the message of Allah, [arabic words]
May the blessings of peace of Allah be upon him, say -

Allah the almighty has said:

Oh son of Adam,
so long as you call upon me, and ask of me,
I shall forgive you for what you have done,
and I shall not mind.

Oh son of Adam,
were your sins to reach the clouds of the sky,
and were you then to ask forgiveness of me
I would forgive you.

Oh son of Adam,
Were you to come to me with sins nearly as great as the earth,
and were you then to face me, ascribing no partner to me,
I would bring you forgiveness
as close to it in measure.

5 out of 5 stars 5 Stars!.......2000-12-19

Anything less for a truely gifted man? Masha Allah. Extremely beautifully, and entertaining for the heart. All songs are accompanied by children, or other heartfelt men who sing soley for Allah. There are no musical instruments, only the lovely voices.

The dua's are a tremendous blessing, both with a clear, Arabic voice, for easy memorization, and with Sidi Yusef's voice serving for the English translation. Definatley worth memorizing for all occasions.

The Quran is beautiful said in both the Arabic and English language. The CD offers you the ability to record what you would like, so you can make a complete tape of songs, or dua. Make the PERFECT gift, or wonderful for any traffic time, spending time with Allah and those who are lovers are Allah, what a benifit!

5 out of 5 stars Great Gift for New and Old Muslims Alike :).......2000-01-11

This is a truly wonderful CD for both Muslims and those interested in Islam. As a new Muslim, I especially appreciated the Quranic recitation--as I could listen to it and work on my pronunciation. Ten different (I think) surahs are recited including Surah Al-Fatihah, al-Baqarah, al-Imran, al-Shuara, al-Takathur, al-Furqan, and al Ahzab. It also includes lots of different prayers including Istikhara, prayers before eating, etc.

Yusuf Islam (Cat Stevens--think Wild World and Harold & Maude) does the narration, reading of the translation, as well as a few songs. The Quranic recitation is done by Sheikh Mahmoud Khalil Alhousari.

The songs are great! (Love to see an album of simply Islamic songs!) My favorite is "If You Ask Me."

One criticism--I wish the CD-booklet included the transliteration (Arabic) and English for all of the different prayers.

If you're just starting to explore Islam--there are many great websites out there. I also highly recommend the book "Daughters of Another Path."

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful CD.......1999-10-30

This CD is wonderful. I brought it to Mosque Friday and the children listened to some of it before the Imam started talking. It is very good for children and new Muslims like myself. If you have any other questions about it then e-mail me.

This is one of those albums you cant stop hearing.
Nusrat was actually not human!
His voice had a mystic power thas runs through your mind.
Ganj-e-shakar is a song to play loud and make the whole
neighborhood exstatic.
This is real music! and inspiring.
Nusrat was ,is ,and will forever stay the best!

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational.......2001-02-27

I own many of this great man's albums, but this is without a doubt one of his most brilliant and certainly his most inspirational cd.The music on it is sincere and one could listen to it for hours and hours. It is very effective on long distance journeys and at times can be very relaxing.Maki Madni and Sochan Dongian are inspirational songs and there is a deeper meaning to both these tracks. However, most of you will probably just enjoy listening to this mans inspirational voice and the excellent beat to most of these songs on this album.I am certain you will enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars A Devotional Selection.......2000-07-04

This is true qawwali selection. I will strongly recommend the readers to look into it. It has the devotional element to the nth degree and one becomes very emotional listening to it. I was very touched by the first two Qawwalis. They have a strong emotional and religious bent in them and one gets carried away while concentrating on the verses. The last two are equally worth listening. The 3rd one talks about the Sufi Baba Farid Gunj-ae-Shukar. And has a strong tinge of a qawwali recited on Urs of the Sufi Buzurgs. The last one has more of a romantic influence. In short, a very nice blend and a keep!

5 out of 5 stars This album is astounding!.......2000-03-14

It made me cry. I had never heard of this kind of music before. An experience worth having.

This is a really excellent CD. Perfect almost, except "Ganj-E-Shakar" goes on a tad too long. The first piece is simply amazing, and is my favourite!

    Album Description

This spoken-word recording of The Life of the Last Prophet is the first official release by Yusuf Islam since his departure from the music business as Cat Stevens back in 1978. The biography is fully authenticated and approved by an international group of scholars and contains selected verses of the Quran, recited by the renonwned Egyptian Qari(reciter), Shaikh Muhammad Al-Minyaoui. It also includes the song Tala'a al-Badru Alayna, and a beautiful rendition of the adhan(call to prayer).

5 out of 5 stars Yusuf Islam's gift to the world.......2003-12-11

In the late 70's, one of the most famous pop stars of that time, Cat Stevens, annouced he was leaving the entire music industry to dedicate his life and loyalty to God almighty to serve and worship the one true creator of us all. This was a major step for Stevens as much as it was a surprise to his millions of fans and the entire world altogether. Stevens decalred his full submission to God almighty and therefore became a Muslim.(The word 'muslim' means: one who submits or surrenders self to God) Cat Stevens later changed his name to Yusuf Islam and he has since been a big part of the Muslim community in England as well as a spokesperson worldwide. After years of not looking back a slight bit on his long gone music career, Yusuf returned with a new recording company, Mountain of Light, and a new approach. He no longer plays guitar, neither are there the sounds of bass nor heavy drums. All there is is a voice and a simple form of percussion and a message to convey. 'Life of The Last Prophet' is one of many of his recordings that puts the spotlight on the life of prophet Muhammed, peace be upon him, the last messenger of God to the world. Yusuf's soothing voice narrating the story of the prophet, from his birth to his upbringing on the hands of his grandfather then uncle, to his first marriage to Khadija, may God be pleased with her, to the first message revealed to him from God by angel Gabriel, followed by his conveying of the message from God that there is only one God worthy of worship and that he was the messenger of God, and his warning of judgment day and his warning to the people of all times and all places that helfire is home to those who do not believe in God and those who choose to be astray rather than to be righteous. It's a wonder how Yusuf Islam speaks the language of Arabic as fluently as his English. It's also pleasing to my ears to hear him sing the famous 'Tala'al-badru Alayhna' in both languages and the beautiful 'Muhammed Al Mustafa' peace be upon him. God bless Yusuf Islam and build him an empire in paradise for his efforts and his 'da'wah' - his calling to the religion of God, Islam. Of course the life of the prophet then continues taking you through the migration the prophet made from Mecca to Yathrib, later known as Medina. The battle of Badr is also mentioned when the small number of Muslims fought and defeated the bigger number of the infidels of Qureish with the victory of God on their side. Then the night journey to Jerusalem where the prophet peace be upon him was elevated to the seventh heaven and there, the five prayers were commanded by God almighty, then the return to Mecca with almost 10,000 Muslims and the smashing of the idols around the house that Abraham peace be upon him built many years ago, the first house built for people to come to as commanded by God almighty, the Kaaba (or in english: the cube shaped house) and finally the final pilgrimage where prophet Muhammed conveyed his last message to the people of the world and made God his witness that his mission to spread the message that God had sent him with was completed &the last verse of the Quran revealed, and later the prophet's death at the age of 63. To this day, Prophet Muhammed is considered the most influential person to ever live. He was a man who completed the mission he was sent to do. Thankfully to God, today Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world, and the prophet's message, God's religion, Islam is still the same message it was over 1400 years ago.

May God bless Yusuf Islam and everyone at Mountain Of Light. Of course, my thanks or anybody else's thanks is nothing compared to the blessing of God that they seeked when they released this.

I highly recommend 'Life Of The Last Prophet' to all Muslims and non-Muslims and may God guide them, the non-Muslims,to accepting the true religion of Abraham, Noah, Moses, Jesus, Jacob, David, Solomon, and all other prophets equally.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Biography of the Prophet (saws).......2003-12-03

Excellent cd that reminds the Muslims of the day that is coming. I often listen to this cd while I am commuting to work or while I am working to prevent the sins, learn, and remember. You always pick up a new detail when you listen to it. Also a very valuable resource for non-Muslims wishing to learn about the final Prophet of Allah who was sent as a warner to this world. A great compliment to the Prayers of the Last Prophet CD put out by Yusuf Islam. Both are good dawah if you are Muslim or a great means to enter Islam with the Koran if you are not Muslim.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2001-11-10

This CD is so beautifully put together. I thought it would just be pure narration of the history of the prophet's life. But the use of some background sound effects and the recitation of quranic verses and nasheeds at the appropriate times in the narration, really add that little extra something that keeps the narration interesting. Also, both the narrator's voice (Yusuf Islam) and the other recitors' voices on the CD are so beautiful.

3 out of 5 stars The Sum of a Man.......2000-04-15

Although I miss the old music of Cat Stevens and have always hoped to actually have a conversation with the man, I am happy that he has found himself and happiness, which is what we all seek in life. the music in this recording reflects this happiness.

4 out of 5 stars Some Brilliant Songs, Just not Enough.......2003-06-09

For those of you who are not familiar with Luca Turilli, a little background is in order. Turilli is the multi-talented lead guitar player, composer and de facto leader of Italian power metal band, Rhapsody. Rhapsody, which is probably the best known of the power metal bands, calls their music Hollywood, classical, symphonic power metal or something like that. I can see where they get the hollywood tag since all of their music is concept in nature, dealing with kings, dragons, trolls etc. Although I'm not necessarily a fan, I am an admirer. The members of Rhapsody are all excellent musicians, whose music tends to be technically perfect, though a bit tedious.

Profit of the Last Eclipse is a Turilli side project, his second. I checked several independent reviews on this album before writing this review and there doesn't seem to be any consensus since the reviews ranged from 6.5 to 10 (they usually use the richter scale). My observation was that some reviewers (those who are fans) would rate anything by Rhapsody / Luca Turilli in the 9 to 10 range and those not enraptured (pun intended) somewhat lower. I tend to side with the latter, giving the album a 7.5. I wanted to rate this higher, I really did. I'm sure there are people out there that will disagree with me and that's fine but this is the way I see it. When I first started listening to this CD I thought it was going to be a fantastic meg-album because the first two songs, Aenigma and War of the Universe, are absolutely superb, however things dropped off fast. The third song was nothing special and the fourth song (an instrumental) was boring.

The first two songs were different for this band, kind of operatic with choirs, like Therion. There were flashes of it throughout the album but in all other songs, to varying degrees, Luca Turilli sounded like (surprise) Rhapsody. Now there is nothing wrong with sounding like Rhapsody, especially if you are an integral part of Rhapsody. I just thought it sounded redundant, especially after the brilliant start and I have never been as impressed with Rhapsody as other people seem to be.

Anyway, I decided to listen to the CD a few more times to see if I would like it better and sure enough the sixth, Prince of the Starlight, eighth, Demonheart and ninth song New Century's Tarantella weren't bad and the eleven minute closing title track Profit of the Last Eclipse was actually pretty good but two great songs, one real good song and three slightly better than average songs do not, in my opinion, make a 5 or even 4 star rating. Additionally, this is concept album but the story, to me, is nebulous. I read that it's about love in a distant galaxy, although I couldn't get that out by listening to it.

I'm sorry if my review disappoints you but if you want some great epic power metal music take a look at Hastings 1066 by Thy Majestie. These guys also start out with a Therion-esque introduction but they carry it through the entire album better. I wonder if this is the future wave of power metal? Anyway, these guys don't have to worry about sounding like Rhapsody, although they have been compared with them.

    4 out of 5 stars OTT At It's best.......2003-05-24

This is what happens when the mastermind of Rhapsody is left alone for too long.
The album is an intersting concept album set far into the future, and is the usual Power Metal sing-a-long affair with far more symphonics than any Nightwish album you could care to mention. Luca has surrounded himself with competent musicians and the album is in most ways awesome so why not give it 5 stars? Well, the bombast of it can grow old if you;re not too careful. But then, that's the same with most power metal, isn't?

5 out of 5 stars Lots of Great Music... Cheap!.......2006-03-18

This is a ten CD box set with a huge number of great classical piano pieces. Most are played by Jeno Jando, who gets high marks from the Penguin Guide to Compact Discs and DVDs (highly recommended in its own right for the novice and experienced classical music CD buyer) for his playing on budget labels. You will recognize many of the pieces and they will serve as a jumping off point for additional exploration of classical piano. At roughly $2 each, you can't lose!

5 out of 5 stars They are giving it away!.......2000-02-22

The Laserlight label also offers a similar box set of orchestral selections "Meditation - Classical Relaxation". At the time of this writing, that boxed set enjoys a much higher sales ranking than this one. This boxed set deserves to be discovered too. Don't let the low price fool you, these are excellent recordings.
