Doesn't even matter where this lady comes from (though I think she's Norwegian).
Has anyone noticed the enormous quantity of people that are devoted to Jazz in Scandinavia? What's their secret? Well, listening to Silje or Lisa Ekdahl may help you understand.
Mainly a cover album (except songs 1, 6 and 9), and we're all tired of cover-albuns-and-pretty-young-ladies-with-above-the-average-voice-that-make-us-feel-a-bit-better-whilst-listening-to-their-CD's-and-that-sing-jazz-because-it's-intellectually-respected-as-is-renowned. Sorry, not the case, Silje is somehow exquisit and original when singing and interpreting. It's a tough call to try and cover Billie Holiday or Cole Porter. She takes it quite good and, again, that bit above the average that justifies buying this album. She won't classify as diva (why not?) but she certainly won't be left to just accompany you whilst cooking or reading a good book (though I do recommend for these uses also). She stands well above the average as her songs are also pretty elevating and inspirational. If you're looking for bedazzlement, you may buy this album, but beware: it's not an easy one, though it consists mainly of covers.

The main reason to get this single is the "club mix" - it's incredible. "Call The Ships To Port" remains to be one of the finest songs Covenant have ever written, and frankly when I think of the best song to dance to on the floor it's this track!

Ethereal, dark, beautiful, pounding, emotional - it's all there - I can't say there is anything wrong with the production and writing of this track.

A note for the detail orientated: probably one of the best use of a synth's sine wave and a reverb ever created in modern music! The chorus alone is worth the price of admission.

Get it before it's out of print!

This CD, although i haven't listened to this version, Symphony for the Sons of Nam is the most inspiration, non-judgemental piece i have heard in a long time! Our school just played this piece, with Mr. Williams being a guest at every performance and it is amazing. I definetly recomend this CD.

Smooth, very smooth indead..........2003-03-21

I regret that I have not discovered this voice earlier while I was still living in Norway. But I really hate myself for missing her concert at Macau...a personal note.
Her music might be a little too light for a lot of hardcore jazz fans, but it's nonetheless (if not more) as expressive as others in the same genre. It is a form of expression without the usual yelling, screaming (hint, hint, Mariah Carey). I would not go as far as trashing "come away with me", but i'd definitely set this one at the first spot in my cd player.
The unfortunate thing is that there's NO Silje Nergaard's sample music file at amazon.com. It's rather difficult to spread her voice to world without the support form branded label as "blue note". Well, nuff said, a must buy.

i agree with one of the reviews, you can dump 'come away with me' and get this album instead.

A different type of Diva.......2003-02-19

If you're like me and tire of the so-called diva's who express emotions by screeching endlessly up and down the scales then Silje is the ideal antidote. It's great to hear a voice which can convey sentiments with subtlety. This is particularly impressive when one considers Silje's first language is Norwegian. She obviously has a deep understanding and feel for this music genre. All of the tracks sound very polished in keeping with her beautifully clear voice. From the little I know of her it is obvious she has spent some time developing her style and direction. After buying this CD I immediately bought her latest 'At First Light'. This is also a triumph as Silje combines well with lyricist Mike McGurk to compose all but one of the tracks on this CD. Defiitely a must-play when you have some friends around for dinner.

Everything Norah Jones pretends to be!!!.......2003-01-30

This is a good album.
Silje Nergaard has a light, cool and natural voice that never sounds bland, forced or over-mannered. Her songs have an agreeable lightness of touch and swing to them that is most appealing. The instrumentation is sparse - piano, guitars, bass & percussion. Ideal late night listening or early morning, for that matter!

Buy with confidence!

....and, by the way, you can desposit your copy of 'Come Away With Me' in the nearest dumpster while you're on your way to buy this album!

Silje Nergaard and her album Port of Call is FUN to dance to, drive to, or just plain listen to. I was very impressed with her talent, her style, her versatility, and her inventiveness. The CD presents her singing songs she composed ('Me Oh My', 'The Waltz', 'Shame On You') as well as songs written by folks like Duke Ellington, Sting, Rodgers and Hart, Cole Porter, and Billie Holiday amoung others. People who love female jazz and blues vocalists should love Silje Nergaard's music. I know I do.
