Improvisations and meditations on the Great Organ of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. A mystical journey through a moonlit night of music in the reverberant acoustics of the world's largest gothic cathedral.Customer Reviews:
A gold standard of organ improvisation.......2006-11-15
Summoning into life an awesome acoustical space, the great organ in the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine was justly one of the most famous and admired instruments in the U.S. Note the past tense, as at present it is unplayable, smoke damage from a fire in the building in 2001 clinching decades of neglect in maintenance. There are plans for its eventual renovation, however. Of the many recordings of this organ that I have heard, this one, by its legendary titulaire from the '70s/'80s, is by far the most inspiring memoir of a glory that once was and, please God, has not departed forever.
Superb organ improvisations by a master of the genre........2003-11-25
While Halley is no longer associated with either the Cathedral or the Paul Winter Consort (having gone on to do some splendid things in the area of choral performances), we at least have this one album of his solo improvisations to remind us of his unique genius and skills. We of course also have many of his improvisations, made as a key member of the Consort, recorded for posterity on several Paul Winter Consort albums, but this one is rather special insofar as it is the only one available that exhibits Halley's solo work during the time he was the Cathedral's organist.
As Halley explains in his nicely-written booklet notes, Nightwatch is the name given to an ongoing series of Friday night organ-demonstration events (instituted originally by him and now in its 24th year) as part of a weekend youth worship program (carried out through the school year), specifically for high schoolers. The improvisations captured here are more than "just a demonstration of the great organ," though. They have been carefully selected to exhibit musical values well beyond merely the "demo" value of hearing the organ "speak" its remarkable qualities.
All five of these works are excellent, and the sound, digitally remastered from tapes for a 1982 LP, is splendid. Of the five works, I do think that one stands out above the others: the final track, titled "Dawn/Sunrise," based on the Latin plainchant, "Adore Te, Devote." This is a work that is clearly dear to Halley's heart, inasmuch as it appears - only slightly transmogrified - as "For the Beauty of the Earth" in Paul Winter's "Missa Gaia" and in a wonderful setting for flute and organ that appears on "Free as a Bird," an album featuring flautist Rhonda Larson playing several Halley compositions and arrangements. This particular improvisation captures virtually the full range of timbres and coloristic capabilities of the great organ, from the softest flue stops to the brilliance of the unique state trumpet stop, said to be the most powerful on any organ extant.
The booklet notes also include a comprehensive overview of the organ by its curator, both in terms of its stoplist and its history, as first an E. M. Skinner organ and later as an Aeolian-Skinner organ when it was rebuilt and totally revoiced by G. Donald Harrison.
I have only one complaint about this album (preventing me from giving it a 5-star rating), and that is its very short running time, more than a full minute less than 40 minutes. Surely, with over nearly a decade of Nightwatch performances under Halley's aegis, it should have been possible to come up with an additional 20 or 30 minutes of music for inclusion. Nonetheless, the album is remarkable for what it is: a prime example of an artform - organ improvisation - that hopefully is presently (and once again) in the ascendency.

Beautiful Music but Vocals need a LOT of work.......2007-06-17
However, I was most distressed upon hearing A La Una Yo Naci, a beautiful Sephardic song. Let me stress that the instrumental parts are MAGNIFICENT (I literally felt like I was transported back to 14-16th century Spain), but the singing was way off, especially in the last part of each verse (at which point I was ripped out of my fantasy with whiplash). I don't know if that was done on purpose as artistic license or he just missed his cues, but either way, it was dreadful! The same thing happened with Helas Madame, another classic favorite of mine that I felt was completely botched.
Again, the instrumental music parts are fantastic and very enjoyable. The singing however, is atrocious. It would have been best if the artist could have hired singers who actually can speak/sing Spanish, or Italian, or French without an(or with less noticable) american/english accent. They could have sung for the band while they played masterfully.
If this could be re-released with new and improved vocals, I would give it 5 stars. As is, I give 3 stars for the wonderful instrumental music presentation.

So many beautiful songs, so little time.......2000-01-31
This CD also contains a very spirited, "Helas Madame", attributed to Henry VIII himself. (I suspect he had some help on this one) This song is a primer in "courtly love". Meant to be sung as a duet, it tells the story (in French) of a woman all but driving a man to distraction. While not presented as a duet on this album, the lively instrumental interludes provide enough of a counterpoint to convey the sense of the song.
Other songs of note are "We Be Soldiers Three", a fine English drinking song, and "Since First I Saw Your Face".
These fine musicians truly deserve "all honor and renown".

Outstanding CDs appear so rarely in the Philippines.......2004-08-21
With this CD, Silje proves that not only does she have the sensitivity, she also has the INTELLECT to create her OWN music. the arrangements are so simple but effective. Not obstrusive. Almost all tracks are outstanding (like How Am I Supposed to see the stars, Be Gone, You send me flowers).
For jazz affecionados who are not familiar with silje, PLEASE take a chance on this one. you wont regret it.
Snappy jazz from Norway.......2004-05-23
Dubious musical connections aside, Nergaard actually has an effervescent, brandy snap of a voice and on Nightwatch, her eighth album, she lends her distinctive vocals to pop and folk-infused compositions like the whimsical fluff of You Send Me Flowers and the extremely catchy Take A Long, Long Walk.
Apart from an almost unrecognisably languid arrangement of David Bowie and Pat Metheny's This Is Not America, Nergaard composed all the music herself, but while the music fits her beguiling, wide-eyed intonation perfectly, collaborator Tim McGurk's English lyrics are less successful. Although there are occasional glimpses of brilliance, in general the barren phrases and overwrought verses show nowhere near the same level of precision or flair as the music.
This deficiency, combined with the quiet intensity and tidy lyrics of the Nergaard-penned closer (sans McGurk), On And On, may induce you to seek out Nergaard's more experimental (and self-produced) Norwegian language releases. Nergaard may be regarded as being at the forefront of the contemporary European jazz scene but on Nightwatch, she seems just as comfortable lounging around with more conventional pieces like In A Sentence.
It's the innovative blend of exuberant jazz plus a liberal pinch of this and that which really sets the mood of Nightwatch.

I don't speak French, so I'm crazy about this band.......2000-04-09
The painting by Sir Frank Dicksee is a visual adaptation of a poem by John Keats. The musical adaptations of this very talented group are equally rich in color and texture. The traditional carol, "Drive The Cold Winter Away", has a freshness and vitality that carries over into all the other songs. Other songs are treated with equal verve and evident passion for early music.
If you must limit your purchases of early music to only the very best, then this is certainly one group to collect.

Customer Reviews:
Failed to live up to expectations.......2007-05-20
Unfortunate it was then that Nightwatch failed to live up to expectations.
There were in fact some terrific songs. 'Wait a little while' is superb, very evocative and as good as anything on 'Celebrate me Home'. In addition, Loggins had co written 'What a fool believes' with Micheal McDonald (later a huge hit for the Doobie brothers) and Loggin's version was very good as well. Beyond that though things weren't so good. The problem was that Loggins was now being pushed as a rock singer and the songs served up to fulfill this purpose were unconvincing. 'Easy driver', 'Down'n'dirty', and 'Down in the Boondocks' are all packed onto the old side one and might be vaguely foot stomping but are ultimately rather vacuous. The second half of the CD is more like the production of 'Celebrate me home' but lacks the charm and sophistocation of that record (apart from the magnificent 'Wait a little while'). There was enough history there however to make the next record 'Keep the fire' an automatic buy but if anything it was a further deterioration. Finally then, to get to the nuts and bolts - this CD is of the AOR/West coast genre, not dissimilar to the productions of Dan Fogelberg and Micheal McDonald era Doobie brothers. It's not the place to start on a foray into Kenny Loggin's music. A compilation would be a better place to start but in my opinion 'Celebrate me Home' and two albums with Jim Messina (Mother Lode and Full Sail) are ESSENTIAL West Coast albums. Buy those now and leave Nightwatch for later.
