Beginning in the 1950s, Deben Bhattacharya, a legendary ethnographer, traveled the world with a high-quality tape recorder, capturing traditions and cultures that he sensed might not have long to live. In India he taped older veena players, along with temple songs and prayers of Sikhs, Buddhists, Hindus and Bauls. Here, one discovers the roots of much Indian classical and pop music in their purest and most original forms.

These recordings are superb representatives of devotion, sung from the devotee's heart to the One Lord. Very touching is the recording especially of a father and his son singing on the street their love to God.

BORING.......2006-03-15

The chants on this tape were made quite a while ago so the sound quality is poor and the chants drone on and on and just aren't very lively, or even pleasant to the ears. If you want some wonderful chants go for Krishan Das instead...
