Sufi mysticism extends into musical passion in the form of Qawwali, the music performed by such artists as the Sabri Brothers and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. This 1978 recording of the Sabri Brothers and ensemble captures the 9-piece group on only its second U.S. tour, recorded by ethnomusicology pioneer David Lewsiton. These performances abridge Qawwali spirit brilliantly, with the harmonium chuffing alongside the ensemble's hand percussion and call-and-response vocals. The songs exude a passion, wailing and careening with exultation. At times conversational, the Sabri Brothers emphasize vocal virtuosity and storytelling prowess. This is a key early Qawwali recording, traditional and yet trailblazing at the same time. --Andrew Bartlett

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (1948-1997) was adored in his native Pakistan as a qawwal (Sufi mystic and singer) long before his unbelievably beautiful tenor voice and soaring flights of improvisation brought him international fame. The short, stout man with the beatific smile was most often heard with his "Party," a troupe of singers and instrumentalists who mirrored his every impulse. Although Ustad (Master) Khan ultimately collaborated with important western producers and rock stars and appeared on film soundtracks, for him, everything led back to the source of all things. He is heard here accompanied primarily by harmonium, tabla drums and clapping back-up singers and his trademark spiraling devotional surges seem to arc clear to the cosmos. These seven rare archival tracks are an ideal introduction to Ustad Khan's early work and constitute a worthy addition to the legacy of a world-class artist who unfailingly described himself as "Allah's humble servant." --Christina RodenCustomer Reviews:

A must for Sufi music lovers: Voice from heaven.......2005-03-11
This collection of recordings from 1978-1982 is one of his best work. I have always enjoyed his original recordings more than his remixed music and therefore to me its an ultimate pleasure to have this set in my collection. This is the original music Nusrat always enojoyed singing more than any of his remixed or westernized versions. It is the music coming from the soul of the person during the time he was still unknown to the most of the world.
It is a relentless endless joy peaking into tears, resting into calmness; a simmering beauty. If you let yourself listen with the whole of yourself, you will have the pure feeling of flight while firmly rooted to the ground. You dont need to understand Urdu and can still hook into the story that he weaves with this wordless voice. This is the sensational character of Qawwali, the music of Sufis and voice from heaven.

Canadian experimental guitarist Brook and the late, "shining star of Qawwal" come together for a second time to bring the music of Pakistan into a creative new realm. If you are a traditionalist who wants nothing but Pakistani music, stay away. This album is soaked in ambient electronic guitar noises and some of Khan's most out-of-the-tradition singing. These experiments are not to be confused with lots of the electro-noodling, however. Both artists were devoted to their gods and their music, and it shows in the potency of these tracks. Brook seems to have been a natural match for Nusrat and has drawn out an unusual performance that probably fulfills the ideas that were only hinted at in their first collaboration, Musst Musst. --Louis GibsonCustomer Reviews:

The late, great Pakistani Qawwali singer's first collaboration with producer/guitarist Michael Brook took the passionate, gymnastic tenor out of tradition and into trip-hop nation. Recorded at Peter Gabriel's expansive Real World Studios, the album combines ethnic percussion, programmed beats (some by Gabriel himself), Brook's atmospheric and infinite guitar swells, and loop-based motifs with Khan's complex, ornamented vocal delivery and devotional lyrics. On the later Night Song, Brook and Khan perfected their cross-cultural dialogue, though Mustt, with its fiery vocal runs and funky, ethereal production, has become an important touchstone in the ethno-techno movement that includes Transglobal Underground and Loop Guru. --James RotondiCustomer Reviews:

I don't know much about Qawaali art..........2005-07-13
it's hard to tell from the brief sample here on Amazon... but the song is pure beauty
i first heard this song (Nothing Without You) on the local Pacifica radio station some years ago... the sound engineer played it between shows... i was so enthralled by it, i immediately called up the station and asked the engineer what he was playing... i wrote it down and at first opportunity sought it out... i was lucky to find the album at my local Tower records (or did i have to special order it? i can't remember... this was pre-internet)
this is one of the songs that sometimes brings tears to my eyes just from its sheer beauty
(some others: Madame George by Van Morrison, Das Lied von die Erde by Mahler, Unchained Melody by the Righteous Brothers... for comparison, in case you wonder what moves my groove)
your mileage may vary... art, afterall, is a matter of taste...
but... this is a profane song, it's a profane album -- Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan usually sings sacred music... i personally think this is the closest a love song ever comes to rivalling the most sacred of sacred songs, irrespective of religion or belief system... from this one song alone, i consider him to be a holy man
Nusrat Fans (both Old & New) Must, Must own this album............2005-07-01
A truly exceptional vocalist, who's vocal talents are a combination of Organic, passionate, spiritual, vocal gymnastics, that are at the same time exuberantly confident, yet passionately arousing. As this is the voice of a classically-trained vocalist, that is both grand and sweeping , with a level of grandeur and yearning, that earmarked him as one of the finest vocalists of his generation. Forget the fact that for the vast majority of western ears, the lyrics will all but be impenetrable. What Nusrat does virtually better than most, is convey the feeling of emotion through harmonies, soaring choruses, by which, his complete and utter conviction of his enormous voice, which is one minute husky and trenchant, and as powerful as the most emotive of singers, and then on the next as serene and soulful as any legendary Jazz/ Soul singer you care to mention, is extremely impressive. But even more impressive is the fact that Nusrat is able to emotionally connect with the listener, when there are obviously language barriers, and the sheer euphoric and celebratory tone of some songs, transcend the language difficulties and arguably have nearly as much (if not just as much as) impact, as if he was singing in our own native tongue.
But to not mention the musicianship powering this record, would be as much of a misstep as not highlighting the brilliance of Nusrat's vocal contributions, and although the arrangements may seem slightly restrained or unusually considered in comparison to some of the more beat-heavy world music/Worldbeats artists out there, this is so that ample space is given to Nusrat, to perfrom the sort of soaring vocal gymnastics, for which he is renowned for. Tablas rhythmically complement the music, along with the use of various plucked strings, acoustic guitar, and mandolin, and Just as the musicians mantra-like repetition of the whirling motion deepens the trace of the music, Nusrat himself is able to skillfully intergrate his vocals with his musicians, The mood here is one that passionately encourages meditation, through the use of dancing and chanting. With the almost party atmosphere enhanced, by appearing in a virtually classic form, with tablas and harmonium establishing the harmony and rhythm, male singers swelling around Nusrat's central vocal and using hand claps to drive the tempo, it's jaw-dropping stuff for sure, and although Nusrat is arguably the star of the show here, it's the tremendous support, for his musicians that elevate this performance into 'stunning' territory.
If your new to the delights of Nusrat, and have yet to make a purchase of one of his studio albums, most people (will quite rightly) point you in the direction of this studio album. As to whether it's the best thing he's put his name to, isn't entirely clear, but what is beyond doubt, is that this is the perfect starting point for anyone deciding to enter into his music. Its has the accessibility for newcomers, (along with the "Massive Attack" remix of Mustt Mustt, tagged onto the end of the album), as well as the possibility that some of his best known songs are here (increasing the possibility of you knowing a track or two), and enough distingushed performances all round, to...if not become his best album, certainly ranks alongside his best work. And for anyone else that has a Nusrat album or two and DOESN'T have this in their collection already, well.....your next purchase is right here!!!!

It's difficult to escape the tight, almost rushed feeling characteristic of some of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's studio recordings. Unlike the Qawwali: The Vocal Art of the Sufis series, where the party takes its luxurious time in immersing itself in praising Allah, studio-recorded Nusrat can often feel rushed, as if the party was singing qawwali for the sake of the recording rather than for the sake of religious praise. Thankfully, 1989's Shahen-Shah is different. With Nusrat's voice in fine form and the recording providing the right touch of reverb, this CD leads listeners through an outstanding sample of qawwali. Nusrat's improvisational vocal work on "Kehna Ghalat Ghalat To Chhupana Sahi Sahi" is mind-boggling, and the ensemble is outstanding for the wall of beautiful melody it creates. Rich with spirit and grace. --Karen KarleskiCustomer Reviews:

Voice of God.......2006-05-28
Make no mistake. Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (the Shahen-Shah himself)is the best vocalist of the 20th century and were it not for his untimely, tragic death in 1997, he would be revered all around the world today. How different the world would be post 9/11 etc with this man around to sing and make it all better. If God (whoever he is) could choose someone to sing on his behalf, I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that Nusrat would be it.
Traditional Qawwali is raw, repetitive, rythmnic and long. "Shahen-Shan" provides a perfect snapshot into this genre of music (for those who are novice listeners) and also the deep spirituality that is associated wth hearing NFAK sing. And then there is the Nusrat factor itself. How scary it must have been to see this musical monument sing live. It is the greatest regret in my life that I discovered him too late. His improvisations, voice, control and charisma that is evident just by listening to him is amazing.
If there were more than five stars, I'd give it more. Nusrat is the best ever. If you haven't heard him, you are missing out.

Hypnotic, otherworldly........2004-07-22
It probably won't literally transport the average listener to some state of personal satori (I'm generally as unenlightened as you can get, really), but that doesn't mean these performances aren't mesmerizing. Pulsing tabla beats and handclaps form the backing rhythm, a sinuous melody is provided by the harmonium (a kind of squeeze-box that you'd swear sounds just like an accordion), and the lead and backing voices communicate above them. Sometimes it's a call-and-answer between the repetitions of the lyrics, sometimes it's an improvised scatting that's almost jazzlike. Nusrat uses his voice like an actor, conveying an entire spectrum of emotions across this disc.. there's hope, longing, joy, sadness, passion and ecstatic rapture, immediate and almost tangible even when you can't understand a word.
If the idea of so much steady repetitive chanting and droning hasn't scared you away, you'll probably be very pleased with this disc. Don't worry if it doesn't draw you in right away; the more you're willing to drift along with this heavenly trance, the less time seems to matter at all. At the very least it's a prime example of how amazing this man's voice truly was.. and that is something every serious music fan should experience regardless. Believe all the raves.

Be careful - there are at least 3 other CDs listed by this same "Ecstacy" title, and even the CDs advertised under this item here are NOT all the complete 8 track 71+min CD - the one I got is on the Terrascape label, and at a bargain price ($4.47) from seller "VillageMusicWorld" - who replied to my inquiry e-mail to confirm the CD tracks - so beware and check the track listings....
Note: it is NOT really live - but a remix CD by Bally Sagoo from circa 1997 - hearing this CD in its entirety and in the correct sequence shows what an amazing fusion of two very different worlds of music this is - especially since it PRE-dates any of the Nusrat Khan remix CDs.
EDIT to add - I have uploaded a scan of the CD tracks listing - it's under the clear CD holder.
(Note: "Magic Touch" (Music Club label) is a sub-set which uses only 6 of the shorter tracks - read the review of Magic Touch by enlewellyn)

Recorded in the wake of the late Khan's triumphant performance at the 1985 WOMAD festival, this 10-track collection features the lighter, folkier side of the Pakistani classical music singer's repertoire. Accompanied by his nine-member "party" on acoustic guitar, mandolin, and a full complement of tabla and harmonium, Khan unleashes typically stunning vocal phrases marked by blinding speed, cutting tone, and unearthly ornamentation. The infectious "Yaad-E-Nabi Gulshan Mehka," with lyrics in praise of Muhammed, finds the qawwali singer at his most effervescent, while the ghazal (love song) "Mast Nazroon Se Allah Bachhae" features an insistent hand-clapped rhythm and the full Party chorus singing together in unison. --James RotondiCustomer Reviews:

GREAT MUSIC.......2005-10-07
Exhilirating.......2003-07-14
Musically the soundscape is beautiful and full of range and pleasing to the ear, knowing the lyrics behind it however gives the listener a totally new , almost religious sense of experience to this music, which most people feel is a very trance like state often that Whirling dervishes go into.
However anyone can truly enjoy the bliss featured within Qawalli rhythms and melodies which often seem natural, resonating with the listener's mindsets. The Japanese have claimed to have said that God resides in the vocal chords of Nusrat. The range expressed herein might bring that statement to elevation. It is not for everyone though. Qawalli music often takes patience to grow into a listening experience
Once the rapture of the sounds have you, its hard to let go.

I was very disappointed with this album when I first got it, but now I like it some.
Great Selection!.......2001-03-08
1. Allah Hoo Allah Hoo - Fine. 5. Mast Nazroon Se Allah Bachhae - Beautiful, Romantic and Very Careful in Analyzing the Beauty and its effects :-) 6. Woh Hata Rahe Hain Pardah - Simply Lovely. I think this number holds a lot of power among his well sung Urdu Qawwalis and Ghazals. This is a very poetic piece and has his inner voice in it. 7. Yeh Jo Halka Saroor Hae - Another All Time Great Number. 8. Biba Sada Dil Morr De - Nice One. 9. Yaadan Vichhre Sajan Dian Aiyan - Recollecting the old lover. Well, obviously sad. 10. Sanson Ki Mala Pey - Very Poetic. Very Beautiful. Here he is expressing a lover's sentiments in words and narrating them point by point.
Great Selection.

Cross-Cultural Journey to the Heart of Sufism.......2006-09-29
Diverse Sufi Music from Around the Globe (3.5 of 5).......2004-03-19
The first track is the Turkish group, Mevlana Kultur Ve Sanat Vakfy Sanatcylary who use the lute and other string instruments to create a a wave-like undulating melody that feels natural ... like rocking gently on a ship at sea. They manage to weave ancient melodies with a modern expression and bring the message of the 13th C. Sufi philospher into modern times, telling us tolerance is sovereign (the liner notes tell us) and everything has a spirit therefore we should strive not to injure or harm anything. The music matches these words. The sound of the words sung is consistent with the melody and percussion by this group. The Sabri Brothers of East Punjab, India now a part of Pakistan, also produce a wonderful calm introduction that builds up to a very enjoyable intensity, chanting the sacred sound of "ah" ... occasionally there is a lead singer and at times a response is given by a chorus. The tabla creates an extremely infectious beat with natural progression of sound and authenticity. The two artists with the most impact on this CD, are Abida Parween, a female modified qawwali vocalist, who is dynamite and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, who helped this genre travel around the world, he needs no introduction. In her rendition of "Tere Ishq Nachaaya", Ms Parween reaches a feverish pitch, with a very satisfying climb on a wonderful musical journey. I like the accordion accompaniment. There is no loss of authenticity with this instrument. While almost anything Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan sings is enhanced and magnified into a great listening experience, there are far better songs than the one on this CD. Truly, this could have been had been a powerful and exciting production, unfortunately it disappoints. Erika Borsos (erikab93)
exploring the varieties of Sufi music.......2003-01-29
Track # 1 is a lovely, slow instrumental piece by a 19th century Turkish composer. It has a tranquil feel to it, and since I seem to have an affinity for Turkish music, this is one of my choice selections.
Tracks 2, 6, and 11 are from Pakistan, and though music from this area tends to be a little frantic for my taste, these are excellent examples, with the fabulous Sabri Brothers, and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, who is perhaps the most world renown musician on this CD.
Tracks 3, 4 and 9 hail from Egypt, and # 9 is recited and sung by Sheikh Ahmed Barrayn, who is described as having a "broken and husky voice", and it carries a power that makes this one of the better pieces for me.
Track # 5 from Morocco, is far and away my favorite piece on this disc, with a dazzling nay (a type of flute) solo that contrasts with the vocal. It is melodic and wonderful.
# 7 from Iran, is an innovative, complex composition on the tanbur (a type of lute). This one is not "lite listening" and may take a few hearings to fully appreciate. # 8 from Senegal is for diverse drums, and # 10 is from Syria, and has some impressive musicianship with "dueling" zither and oud.
The booklet insert has mini bios of the performers, and tells you what CDs these tracks were culled from. The overall sound is good, and total time 72'20.

By the time he died in 1997, Ustad (a Muslim honorific) Khan was world-famous. But long before Michael Brook and Eddie Vedder came calling, he was already a revered qawwal (Sufi devotional singer) known throughout India and his native Pakistan as Shahen-Shah (The Brightest Of Stars.) From the start of his career, numerous recordings of his live concerts were treasured by the faithful and sorting through such a vast and sonically varied back-catalog must have been a daunting, sensitive task. During the mid-eighties, Ustad Khan¹s style was perhaps a bit less polished than it would later become but his intoxicatingly beautiful tenor voice and gift for intricately constructed yet free-flowing improvisation were very much in evidence. His vocals were throaty, passionate, and ethereal, propelled by an unquestioning, self-annihilating belief in a higher power. Few listeners, then or now, could possibly hear him in full cry and not be changed forever. --Christina Roden

A two-CD set of Khan's most serious and intense performances; the apex of the genius singer's marriage of Sufi devotional poetry and Pakistani classical music. Trancelike tabla rhythms, aching harmonium lines, and Khan's indescribable virtuosity grace each extended piece. The excellent, thoughtful liner notes by the late acclaimed rock singer Jeff Buckley say it best: "Part Buddha, part demon, part mad angel, his voice is velvet fire, simply incomparable. Nusrat's blending of classical improvisations to the art of Qawwali, combined with his out-and-out daredevil style and his sensitivity, puts him in a category all his own." music I've listened to, but I want more. Its taken me a couple
of weeks to get into it, but now I can't stop listening.
Over a steady rythmic base of clapping and instruments Nusrat
lets his incredible vocal talents pour it all out.
The gravity and the wildness! There is a nice framework to
the music, but so much subtlety and variety over it,
absolutely brilliant, I haven't heard anything like it.
I suppose if you like songs like Kashmir, by Led Zep, Dream
Brother, by Jeff Buckley, or Leary's Gate, by Ian Moore, you
should check this out. All those songs are rock songs with an
Eastern vibe. Nusrat's music is the real thing.

I started out with Nusrat by buying the CD "Rapture" because it was the only one available in the store. I'm glad I didn't stop there and went ahead and got this CD. Whereas "Rapture" cuts off songs to make it more palatable for Western shorter attention span ears and includes Nusrat's misallocated foray into Western pop blend, "The Supreme Collection Volume I" explores the music to it's depth, as it was meant to be heard.
This music is rich and I can see why PJ's Eddie Vedder was influenced by it. Keep an open mind and open soul and be amazed by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Party whipping themselves up into a frenzy of sound. They're real...they mean it.
