Qawwali-Sufi Music Of Pakistan [CD-single]

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Sufi mysticism extends into musical passion in the form of Qawwali, the music performed by such artists as the Sabri Brothers and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. This 1978 recording of the Sabri Brothers and ensemble captures the 9-piece group on only its second U.S. tour, recorded by ethnomusicology pioneer David Lewsiton. These performances abridge Qawwali spirit brilliantly, with the harmonium chuffing alongside the ensemble's hand percussion and call-and-response vocals. The songs exude a passion, wailing and careening with exultation. At times conversational, the Sabri Brothers emphasize vocal virtuosity and storytelling prowess. This is a key early Qawwali recording, traditional and yet trailblazing at the same time. --Andrew Bartlett

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (1948-1997) was adored in his native Pakistan as a qawwal (Sufi mystic and singer) long before his unbelievably beautiful tenor voice and soaring flights of improvisation brought him international fame. The short, stout man with the beatific smile was most often heard with his "Party," a troupe of singers and instrumentalists who mirrored his every impulse. Although Ustad (Master) Khan ultimately collaborated with important western producers and rock stars and appeared on film soundtracks, for him, everything led back to the source of all things. He is heard here accompanied primarily by harmonium, tabla drums and clapping back-up singers and his trademark spiraling devotional surges seem to arc clear to the cosmos. These seven rare archival tracks are an ideal introduction to Ustad Khan's early work and constitute a worthy addition to the legacy of a world-class artist who unfailingly described himself as "Allah's humble servant." --Christina Roden

5 out of 5 stars Soul Stirring.......2005-09-21

I recently purchased this volume of original works of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, and my expectations were exceeded. I have always enjoyed Nusrat's soulful voice, it stirs the divinity within. I do not understand Urdhu, however his music seems to transcend the boundaries of mere language. He is surely missed and I am looking forward to purchasing the second volume to this collection of original work!

5 out of 5 stars A must for Sufi music lovers: Voice from heaven.......2005-03-11

Khan was the most popular singers in the Indian subcontinent. He predominantly sang qawwali, the music of devotional Sufism in a unique style that appealed to followers of sufism and music lovers all over the world. Not many people know that he had announced plans to record an experimental album with Luciano Pavarotti. Besides, he was also invited to perform with Madonna, but health problems waylaid all plans.

This collection of recordings from 1978-1982 is one of his best work. I have always enjoyed his original recordings more than his remixed music and therefore to me its an ultimate pleasure to have this set in my collection. This is the original music Nusrat always enojoyed singing more than any of his remixed or westernized versions. It is the music coming from the soul of the person during the time he was still unknown to the most of the world.

It is a relentless endless joy peaking into tears, resting into calmness; a simmering beauty. If you let yourself listen with the whole of yourself, you will have the pure feeling of flight while firmly rooted to the ground. You dont need to understand Urdu and can still hook into the story that he weaves with this wordless voice. This is the sensational character of Qawwali, the music of Sufis and voice from heaven.

Canadian experimental guitarist Brook and the late, "shining star of Qawwal" come together for a second time to bring the music of Pakistan into a creative new realm. If you are a traditionalist who wants nothing but Pakistani music, stay away. This album is soaked in ambient electronic guitar noises and some of Khan's most out-of-the-tradition singing. These experiments are not to be confused with lots of the electro-noodling, however. Both artists were devoted to their gods and their music, and it shows in the potency of these tracks. Brook seems to have been a natural match for Nusrat and has drawn out an unusual performance that probably fulfills the ideas that were only hinted at in their first collaboration, Musst Musst. --Louis Gibson

5 out of 5 stars Priceless.......2006-07-27

Night Song by NFAK is one of the very high quality innovations in the fields of eastern music which you don't find so often. The main strength of this work comes from the seamless fusion of eastern and western style music.

I think this work is immortal.

5 out of 5 stars "We do not sing, we are made to sing.".......2006-06-16

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is best known for Qawwali music, the devotional music of the Sufis, taking it to incredible heights, but here we see perhaps his most successful cross-over album, with an excellent supporting cast, including Michael Brook on infinite guitar, keyboards and percussion, that gives Nusrat's music a broader feel. It was really a shame to lose Nusrat at the peak of his career. He had become involved in so many fascinating projects, including singing with Eddie Vedder on "The Face of Love," from the soundtrack to "Dead Man Walking." His soaring harmonics were a badly needed infusion into the world music scene, when it was beginning to grow stale.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Collaboration and Synergy.......2006-05-24

This is my favorite recording of either of these talented musicians. It is moving musically and vocally; a harmonious balance of sound, culture, traditions. There may not be the traditional Sufi devotional songs with tabla, clapping and harmonium Nusrat is best known and loved for (see his GOLD TO DUST field recording), or the Bollywoodish pop songs he did (with such enthusiasm). I don't have a clue what he's singing about here, but it is clearly spiritual, relaxing, uplifting and transformative. Much of it is non verbal, just his voice soaring in joy. Brook's subtle and tasteful guitar loops and layers compliment this mood beautifully.

5 out of 5 stars Miracle of Nusrat Fateh ali Khan's voice and talent of Brook........2006-01-13

I wish people can understand the punjabi language with it's pure Pakistani essence.By understanding the lyrics fused with western music makes This Album out of this world. Pure magic of NFAK's voice and Brook's increadible talent have created this miracle. I am absolutely touched to my soul whenever I listen to this album. This is so sad NFAK is not among us. But I am blessed to witness the life and magic of a legend during his lifetime. He was indeed the greatest master of all times.

The late, great Pakistani Qawwali singer's first collaboration with producer/guitarist Michael Brook took the passionate, gymnastic tenor out of tradition and into trip-hop nation. Recorded at Peter Gabriel's expansive Real World Studios, the album combines ethnic percussion, programmed beats (some by Gabriel himself), Brook's atmospheric and infinite guitar swells, and loop-based motifs with Khan's complex, ornamented vocal delivery and devotional lyrics. On the later Night Song, Brook and Khan perfected their cross-cultural dialogue, though Mustt, with its fiery vocal runs and funky, ethereal production, has become an important touchstone in the ethno-techno movement that includes Transglobal Underground and Loop Guru. --James Rotondi

5 out of 5 stars The best album to come out of the east..........2007-01-26

Fulfilling and wonderfully artistic. will be playing at my b&b at the entrance sound... here at the wonderful black sand beach in hawaii...it is worth buying... peace

5 out of 5 stars I don't know much about Qawaali art..........2005-07-13

i recommend this album for one reason: the song "Nothing Without You" is one of the most beautiful songs i have ever heard

it's hard to tell from the brief sample here on Amazon... but the song is pure beauty

i first heard this song (Nothing Without You) on the local Pacifica radio station some years ago... the sound engineer played it between shows... i was so enthralled by it, i immediately called up the station and asked the engineer what he was playing... i wrote it down and at first opportunity sought it out... i was lucky to find the album at my local Tower records (or did i have to special order it? i can't remember... this was pre-internet)

this is one of the songs that sometimes brings tears to my eyes just from its sheer beauty

(some others: Madame George by Van Morrison, Das Lied von die Erde by Mahler, Unchained Melody by the Righteous Brothers... for comparison, in case you wonder what moves my groove)

your mileage may vary... art, afterall, is a matter of taste...
but... this is a profane song, it's a profane album -- Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan usually sings sacred music... i personally think this is the closest a love song ever comes to rivalling the most sacred of sacred songs, irrespective of religion or belief system... from this one song alone, i consider him to be a holy man

5 out of 5 stars Nusrat Fans (both Old & New) Must, Must own this album............2005-07-01

Arguably, one of a handful of musicians from the world music province, that was able to successfully remain a huge star in his nativehome land (Pakistan), and make the successful transition over to the west, and still retain complete credibility and artistic excellence, after having worked on various western musician collaborations, and having his work remixed. (especially the stunning 'Massive Attack' remix of "Mustt Mustt").

A truly exceptional vocalist, who's vocal talents are a combination of Organic, passionate, spiritual, vocal gymnastics, that are at the same time exuberantly confident, yet passionately arousing. As this is the voice of a classically-trained vocalist, that is both grand and sweeping , with a level of grandeur and yearning, that earmarked him as one of the finest vocalists of his generation. Forget the fact that for the vast majority of western ears, the lyrics will all but be impenetrable. What Nusrat does virtually better than most, is convey the feeling of emotion through harmonies, soaring choruses, by which, his complete and utter conviction of his enormous voice, which is one minute husky and trenchant, and as powerful as the most emotive of singers, and then on the next as serene and soulful as any legendary Jazz/ Soul singer you care to mention, is extremely impressive. But even more impressive is the fact that Nusrat is able to emotionally connect with the listener, when there are obviously language barriers, and the sheer euphoric and celebratory tone of some songs, transcend the language difficulties and arguably have nearly as much (if not just as much as) impact, as if he was singing in our own native tongue.

But to not mention the musicianship powering this record, would be as much of a misstep as not highlighting the brilliance of Nusrat's vocal contributions, and although the arrangements may seem slightly restrained or unusually considered in comparison to some of the more beat-heavy world music/Worldbeats artists out there, this is so that ample space is given to Nusrat, to perfrom the sort of soaring vocal gymnastics, for which he is renowned for. Tablas rhythmically complement the music, along with the use of various plucked strings, acoustic guitar, and mandolin, and Just as the musicians mantra-like repetition of the whirling motion deepens the trace of the music, Nusrat himself is able to skillfully intergrate his vocals with his musicians, The mood here is one that passionately encourages meditation, through the use of dancing and chanting. With the almost party atmosphere enhanced, by appearing in a virtually classic form, with tablas and harmonium establishing the harmony and rhythm, male singers swelling around Nusrat's central vocal and using hand claps to drive the tempo, it's jaw-dropping stuff for sure, and although Nusrat is arguably the star of the show here, it's the tremendous support, for his musicians that elevate this performance into 'stunning' territory.

If your new to the delights of Nusrat, and have yet to make a purchase of one of his studio albums, most people (will quite rightly) point you in the direction of this studio album. As to whether it's the best thing he's put his name to, isn't entirely clear, but what is beyond doubt, is that this is the perfect starting point for anyone deciding to enter into his music. Its has the accessibility for newcomers, (along with the "Massive Attack" remix of Mustt Mustt, tagged onto the end of the album), as well as the possibility that some of his best known songs are here (increasing the possibility of you knowing a track or two), and enough distingushed performances all round, to...if not become his best album, certainly ranks alongside his best work. And for anyone else that has a Nusrat album or two and DOESN'T have this in their collection already, well.....your next purchase is right here!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Hypnotic beats - entancing treats!!.......2003-12-09

An excellent collection of some of Nuzzy's finest stuff.I first heard Nuzzy when I worked in an Indian deli, but didnt think too much about it.I was made curious of his work when i saw that massive attack were fans and remixed some of his stuff.I have a few of his albums and not one of them fails to capture the power and hypnotic effect of his music.Muust Muust is certainly worth a look for anyone with an interest in world music and massive attack's remix doesn't play around too much with it,just adds a liitle more to the backround beats, excellent.

5 out of 5 stars I am not an officionado of Indian music, but I love this!.......2003-07-22

I may be "bipolar" in my musical tastes. When I need to pull my bootstraps up and keep on going up and away from any sad or black mood, I often choose this CD, (or Zakir Hussien).

Indian music(for that matter, all Middle Eastern music) is very affirmative music. Not only in the feeling of the vocals but in the beats.
I know this is not a very "intelligent" sounding review, because I don't know all the terms and history..but the point is ..you dont have to. It's just totally positive and enjoyable whether it's "authentic" or not.

It's difficult to escape the tight, almost rushed feeling characteristic of some of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's studio recordings. Unlike the Qawwali: The Vocal Art of the Sufis series, where the party takes its luxurious time in immersing itself in praising Allah, studio-recorded Nusrat can often feel rushed, as if the party was singing qawwali for the sake of the recording rather than for the sake of religious praise. Thankfully, 1989's Shahen-Shah is different. With Nusrat's voice in fine form and the recording providing the right touch of reverb, this CD leads listeners through an outstanding sample of qawwali. Nusrat's improvisational vocal work on "Kehna Ghalat Ghalat To Chhupana Sahi Sahi" is mind-boggling, and the ensemble is outstanding for the wall of beautiful melody it creates. Rich with spirit and grace. --Karen Karleski

5 out of 5 stars Nusrat sings only to Allah now but we can all still hear him on earth.......2007-03-27

My heart sings what my mouth cannot whenever I listen to Nusrat, his music can never be matched, his voice stretches human limits because he truly sings with all angels, prophets, and martyrs in heaven. Shahen-Shah has Allah, Mohammed, Char, Yaar which is absolutely enchanting and stands out in this compilation. I dare the listener not to sway, dance, and sing with Nusrat as he sings in Shahen-Shah with all body, soul, and mind. There is nothing but you and Nusrat's singing. Shahen-Shah is a brief but good representation of Nusrat's immortal legacy. Shahen-Shah must be in the collection of anyone who listens to Nusrat.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring.......2007-03-14

...and particularly good to pop into your CD player and listen to while driving across the desert at night.

5 out of 5 stars Voice of God.......2006-05-28

Having grown up with Led Zeppelin, the Who and being a fan of modern artists like Bruce Springsteen and Co., I was somewhat surprised when a rock obsessed friend of mine gave me Shahen-Shah to listen to in September 2005. His words were "man this is freaky". Thinking it was some middle eastern music of a large man I put this CD into my CD player and well, what can I say? I have listened to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan in some form or another for the last 9 months every day.

Make no mistake. Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (the Shahen-Shah himself)is the best vocalist of the 20th century and were it not for his untimely, tragic death in 1997, he would be revered all around the world today. How different the world would be post 9/11 etc with this man around to sing and make it all better. If God (whoever he is) could choose someone to sing on his behalf, I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that Nusrat would be it.

Traditional Qawwali is raw, repetitive, rythmnic and long. "Shahen-Shan" provides a perfect snapshot into this genre of music (for those who are novice listeners) and also the deep spirituality that is associated wth hearing NFAK sing. And then there is the Nusrat factor itself. How scary it must have been to see this musical monument sing live. It is the greatest regret in my life that I discovered him too late. His improvisations, voice, control and charisma that is evident just by listening to him is amazing.

If there were more than five stars, I'd give it more. Nusrat is the best ever. If you haven't heard him, you are missing out.

5 out of 5 stars Hypnotic, otherworldly........2004-07-22

I mean those words almost literally - at its most powerful, Nusrat's extraordinary voice really did seem to transcend our world and reach out to the stars. Its setting of qawwali (Pakistani devotional music) is based around smooth repetitions of simple chants, building a hypnotic trance with steadily building intensity, until the experience moves beyond the notes and words and reaches to touch something intangible. If you're looking for a more fusion-y blending of traditional and modern, there are synth/guitar-backed offerings like Mustt Mustt or Night Song to start with. Shahen-Shah (meaning 'Brightest Star') is pure traditional qawwali at its ecstatic peak.

It probably won't literally transport the average listener to some state of personal satori (I'm generally as unenlightened as you can get, really), but that doesn't mean these performances aren't mesmerizing. Pulsing tabla beats and handclaps form the backing rhythm, a sinuous melody is provided by the harmonium (a kind of squeeze-box that you'd swear sounds just like an accordion), and the lead and backing voices communicate above them. Sometimes it's a call-and-answer between the repetitions of the lyrics, sometimes it's an improvised scatting that's almost jazzlike. Nusrat uses his voice like an actor, conveying an entire spectrum of emotions across this disc.. there's hope, longing, joy, sadness, passion and ecstatic rapture, immediate and almost tangible even when you can't understand a word.

If the idea of so much steady repetitive chanting and droning hasn't scared you away, you'll probably be very pleased with this disc. Don't worry if it doesn't draw you in right away; the more you're willing to drift along with this heavenly trance, the less time seems to matter at all. At the very least it's a prime example of how amazing this man's voice truly was.. and that is something every serious music fan should experience regardless. Believe all the raves.

I picked up a version of this album with the green cover that is viewable in the user submitted images for this CD. The tracklisting features all 8 tracks, however with english titles:

1.Ecstacy, 2. By the Candle Light, 3. Magic Touch, 4. Heart of Gold, 5. Love Comes Home, 6. Precious Jems, 7. Prayer to Allah, 8. Star Crossed.

This is an amazing album. Hopefully this will help interested buyers make sure that the variant they have is legitimate, or that if you bought it, you haven't been ripped off. This disc is well worth picking up at any price, and an awesome entry album for those curious about Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's music or middle eastern music in general.

I agree with the previous review by "a music fan" - this is a gem of a CD - and the original complete 8 track 71+ min CD on the Terrascape label.

Be careful - there are at least 3 other CDs listed by this same "Ecstacy" title, and even the CDs advertised under this item here are NOT all the complete 8 track 71+min CD - the one I got is on the Terrascape label, and at a bargain price ($4.47) from seller "VillageMusicWorld" - who replied to my inquiry e-mail to confirm the CD tracks - so beware and check the track listings....

Note: it is NOT really live - but a remix CD by Bally Sagoo from circa 1997 - hearing this CD in its entirety and in the correct sequence shows what an amazing fusion of two very different worlds of music this is - especially since it PRE-dates any of the Nusrat Khan remix CDs.

EDIT to add - I have uploaded a scan of the CD tracks listing - it's under the clear CD holder.

(Note: "Magic Touch" (Music Club label) is a sub-set which uses only 6 of the shorter tracks - read the review of Magic Touch by enlewellyn)

I first heard about Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan while working in India. After seeing a performance on television, I ran out to my local music shop. I couldn't remember the name of the guy I had heard, so I tried to sing the tune to the shopkeeper. He smiled and handed me a cassette entitled Dum Mast Mast. The album was transformative. Since returning to the U.S., I've hunted for a CD version to no avail, until piecing together that Ecstacy was the one I was looking for (This tape I had all of the songs titles in Hindi, and they only vaguely match the English titles.) Joy at last! I've heard other albums and compilations, but none of them have the ingenuity and sheer energy of this one.

Recorded in the wake of the late Khan's triumphant performance at the 1985 WOMAD festival, this 10-track collection features the lighter, folkier side of the Pakistani classical music singer's repertoire. Accompanied by his nine-member "party" on acoustic guitar, mandolin, and a full complement of tabla and harmonium, Khan unleashes typically stunning vocal phrases marked by blinding speed, cutting tone, and unearthly ornamentation. The infectious "Yaad-E-Nabi Gulshan Mehka," with lyrics in praise of Muhammed, finds the qawwali singer at his most effervescent, while the ghazal (love song) "Mast Nazroon Se Allah Bachhae" features an insistent hand-clapped rhythm and the full Party chorus singing together in unison. --James Rotondi

5 out of 5 stars Exhilirating.......2003-07-14

Nusrat Fateh Ali has a commanding voice and booming sonic presence. the Music of Qawalli is often an acquired listening experience. While i cannot speak for the listeners who listen to this musical form without knowing the linguistic intricacy and beauty mentioned in Qawalli verses, i can speak for the ones that do know the language its mostly sung in.

Musically the soundscape is beautiful and full of range and pleasing to the ear, knowing the lyrics behind it however gives the listener a totally new , almost religious sense of experience to this music, which most people feel is a very trance like state often that Whirling dervishes go into.

However anyone can truly enjoy the bliss featured within Qawalli rhythms and melodies which often seem natural, resonating with the listener's mindsets. The Japanese have claimed to have said that God resides in the vocal chords of Nusrat. The range expressed herein might bring that statement to elevation. It is not for everyone though. Qawalli music often takes patience to grow into a listening experience

Once the rapture of the sounds have you, its hard to let go.

4 out of 5 stars over-produced.......2001-11-19

Listen to Haq Ali Ali on this, and listen to it on something like Nusrat Live at Prince Albert Hall, you understand that there's no need to have the chorus echoing and all the voices in perfect sync, in fact that takes away from the passion of it, when it's almost discordant, that it demands something from God. This cd doesn't seem live, it seems cut and pasted and touched too much, and the string instrument, whether its a guitar or mandolin or whatever, it isn't common in nusrat and sometimes its okay, but mostly I dont care for it. It lacks the fullness, the brutality of real ecstatic quvalli, its like elevator quvalli or kennyg quvalli.
I was very disappointed with this album when I first got it, but now I like it some.

4 out of 5 stars Great Selection!.......2001-03-08

This is a diverse collection of Nusrat. It has the rise and fall of his Punjabi Lyrical Ballads as well as some of his best Urdu singles. Being a Qawwali Singer, I feel his qawwali numbers are far better than the ones he has sung in pure ghazal format. That's the main reason for my dislike of his Urdu Numbers.

1. Allah Hoo Allah Hoo - Fine. 5. Mast Nazroon Se Allah Bachhae - Beautiful, Romantic and Very Careful in Analyzing the Beauty and its effects :-) 6. Woh Hata Rahe Hain Pardah - Simply Lovely. I think this number holds a lot of power among his well sung Urdu Qawwalis and Ghazals. This is a very poetic piece and has his inner voice in it. 7. Yeh Jo Halka Saroor Hae - Another All Time Great Number. 8. Biba Sada Dil Morr De - Nice One. 9. Yaadan Vichhre Sajan Dian Aiyan - Recollecting the old lover. Well, obviously sad. 10. Sanson Ki Mala Pey - Very Poetic. Very Beautiful. Here he is expressing a lover's sentiments in words and narrating them point by point.

Great Selection.

5 out of 5 stars Cross-Cultural Journey to the Heart of Sufism.......2006-09-29

In recent years, Sufism (the mystical practices of Islam) has become a popular subject in the West. No small part of this is due to the passionate and powerful singing of the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, the undisputed master of Pakistani Qawwali music. Naturally, he is included on this CD, but Sufism exerts a pull across the Muslim world, and this CD shows other forms of Sufi music as well. Hassan Hakmoun shows the African-tinged music of Morocco's Gnawa brotherhood, Orchestra al-Kindi (led by Hamza Shakkur) and Sheikh Yasin al-Tuhami demonstrate classical Arabic music traditions, Ostad Elahi performs the music of Iran's Kurdish dervishes, and Boubacar Diagne shows the ceremonial music of the Quadiriya brotherhood of West Africa. Fans of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan are in for a treat, since there are also incredibly moving performances of Qawwali by the Sabri Brothers and Abdia Parween, as well as music from Turkey's Mevlana mystics (the famous 'whirling dervishes'). Drawing upon music from Turkey, Pakistan, Egypt, Morocco, Iran, Senegal and Syria, this CD is an incredible journey across the Muslim world, showing many different forms of devotion to God through music. Anyone interested in the musical heart of the Islamic faith should check this CD out, as it's cheap, easy to find, and very enlightening.

3 out of 5 stars Diverse Sufi Music from Around the Globe (3.5 of 5).......2004-03-19

This is the first ever Rough Guide to "-----" Music CD that disappointed me. Sadly, I feel lukewarm about half the tracks. I had high expectations and hoped for more zikr and qawwali styles. The words 'captivating' and 'trance-inducing' do not describe the music because nearly half the tracks sound so uninspired. Tracks # 4 and #5 start out slowly and leave me impatient. Perhaps in another culture and era, the music needed to evolve gradually into a fast rhythm and pace. It is likely this took several hours. The one main flaw with this CD is it covers too many different cultures and styles or maybe the problem is the sequence of music, i.e. the order in which they are played. Only 6 out of 11 tracks made a positive impression. Luckily, there are moments when the tiresome tracks redeem themselves with nice instrumentation. The arrival of the sweet sound of the ney or sensitive strumming of a lute is very welcome ...

The first track is the Turkish group, Mevlana Kultur Ve Sanat Vakfy Sanatcylary who use the lute and other string instruments to create a a wave-like undulating melody that feels natural ... like rocking gently on a ship at sea. They manage to weave ancient melodies with a modern expression and bring the message of the 13th C. Sufi philospher into modern times, telling us tolerance is sovereign (the liner notes tell us) and everything has a spirit therefore we should strive not to injure or harm anything. The music matches these words. The sound of the words sung is consistent with the melody and percussion by this group. The Sabri Brothers of East Punjab, India now a part of Pakistan, also produce a wonderful calm introduction that builds up to a very enjoyable intensity, chanting the sacred sound of "ah" ... occasionally there is a lead singer and at times a response is given by a chorus. The tabla creates an extremely infectious beat with natural progression of sound and authenticity. The two artists with the most impact on this CD, are Abida Parween, a female modified qawwali vocalist, who is dynamite and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, who helped this genre travel around the world, he needs no introduction. In her rendition of "Tere Ishq Nachaaya", Ms Parween reaches a feverish pitch, with a very satisfying climb on a wonderful musical journey. I like the accordion accompaniment. There is no loss of authenticity with this instrument. While almost anything Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan sings is enhanced and magnified into a great listening experience, there are far better songs than the one on this CD. Truly, this could have been had been a powerful and exciting production, unfortunately it disappoints. Erika Borsos (erikab93)

4 out of 5 stars exploring the varieties of Sufi music.......2003-01-29

There are many different styles in this compilation, making it an educational, and interesting CD, if not entirely satisfying .
Track # 1 is a lovely, slow instrumental piece by a 19th century Turkish composer. It has a tranquil feel to it, and since I seem to have an affinity for Turkish music, this is one of my choice selections.
Tracks 2, 6, and 11 are from Pakistan, and though music from this area tends to be a little frantic for my taste, these are excellent examples, with the fabulous Sabri Brothers, and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, who is perhaps the most world renown musician on this CD.

Tracks 3, 4 and 9 hail from Egypt, and # 9 is recited and sung by Sheikh Ahmed Barrayn, who is described as having a "broken and husky voice", and it carries a power that makes this one of the better pieces for me.
Track # 5 from Morocco, is far and away my favorite piece on this disc, with a dazzling nay (a type of flute) solo that contrasts with the vocal. It is melodic and wonderful.

# 7 from Iran, is an innovative, complex composition on the tanbur (a type of lute). This one is not "lite listening" and may take a few hearings to fully appreciate. # 8 from Senegal is for diverse drums, and # 10 is from Syria, and has some impressive musicianship with "dueling" zither and oud.
The booklet insert has mini bios of the performers, and tells you what CDs these tracks were culled from. The overall sound is good, and total time 72'20.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Qawalli CDs Ever.......2005-11-07

If you're a fan of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, you're in for a treat with Sabri Brothers' best CD ever published. For the uninitiated, it's a daunting task trying to find a good Nusrat CD - since his death, there have been dozens of publications, most of questionable quality. It's difficult to find an authentic, non-bootleg version of classical Qawalli. Sabri Brothers, on the other hand, have only a hand full of recordings. That's good and bad: it's good that you don't have to "try" dozens of CDs to discover the Sabri Brothers. It's bad, because once you've discovered them, you want more.

Two of my favorite qawalli's are on this CD: Saquia Aur Pila and Ya Sahib-Ul Jamal. Back to back, more than 40 minutes of ecstasy. I've bought this CD a number of times...I keep wearing them out. I'm glad that this CD is still in print - you must own a copy just for Saquia Aur Pila alone. If you understand Urdu, you'll love the lyrics. If you don't understand Urdu, have an open minded person translate it for you. If you can't find an open minded Urdu to English translator, just enjoy the song for the rhythms, words and a technically superior recording.

If you're beginning your Sufism/Qawalli journey, start here.

5 out of 5 stars Blows Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Away!.......2004-02-14

The music on this CD made me forget all about Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (NFAK). The brothers' voices are richer and more expressive and the music is more authentic. For me, NFAK compromised his artistic integrity by dumbing down his music for western audiences. Check out the real thing on Ya Habib.

5 out of 5 stars Saqia Aur Pila.......2002-11-09

As an adment fan of the Sabri Brothers, I must present this album as the best, because of one reason: it has, in my opinion, the best of all qawalli's. Saqia Aur Pila is by far, the greatest spiritual experiance. The Bradraan's powerfull voices are best suited for such a great qawalli. It touches on the heart of Sufism: the constent rememberance of God. It's first track, Saqia Aur Pila, is all you need to buy this CD. Although, it does bring in some of all the other good ones. But the first song just blows all comptition away. A Saqi is basically the one responsible for giving the wine to the rind, or the drunkards:) However, in Sufi tradition, wine is used to symbolize the rememberance of God. With more rememberance, one falls in love with God, and that is the goal of man. To do good for the pleasure of God. So, this song basically raps that up. And, it also raps up the back bone of Sufism.

5 out of 5 stars Intoxicating experience.......2001-08-16

This album is a standout even by their own exalted standards. Unlike other qawwali performers, the Sabri Brothers don't sacrifice their hypnotic, lengthy delivery for the studio. The first track lasts for a for nearly 27 minutes, and the rest take their cue from it. A highlight is the unique metallic percussion of the chirya tarang and the amazingly energetic dholak of Abdul Karim.

"O Barman, give me another drink, and another, and another, for this is the wine of Truth"

5 out of 5 stars hypnotic.......1999-10-11

For 2 years I have listened to this cd almost daily. It is the most powerful, and mesmerizing music by the truly gifted artists, The Sabri Brothers. One need not know the language to appreciate the spirituality it empowers, if you know the language, it will take you to the depths of self-discovery. If qawwali is your music, this is as good as it gets.

By the time he died in 1997, Ustad (a Muslim honorific) Khan was world-famous. But long before Michael Brook and Eddie Vedder came calling, he was already a revered qawwal (Sufi devotional singer) known throughout India and his native Pakistan as Shahen-Shah (The Brightest Of Stars.) From the start of his career, numerous recordings of his live concerts were treasured by the faithful and sorting through such a vast and sonically varied back-catalog must have been a daunting, sensitive task. During the mid-eighties, Ustad Khan¹s style was perhaps a bit less polished than it would later become but his intoxicatingly beautiful tenor voice and gift for intricately constructed yet free-flowing improvisation were very much in evidence. His vocals were throaty, passionate, and ethereal, propelled by an unquestioning, self-annihilating belief in a higher power. Few listeners, then or now, could possibly hear him in full cry and not be changed forever. --Christina Roden

A two-CD set of Khan's most serious and intense performances; the apex of the genius singer's marriage of Sufi devotional poetry and Pakistani classical music. Trancelike tabla rhythms, aching harmonium lines, and Khan's indescribable virtuosity grace each extended piece. The excellent, thoughtful liner notes by the late acclaimed rock singer Jeff Buckley say it best: "Part Buddha, part demon, part mad angel, his voice is velvet fire, simply incomparable. Nusrat's blending of classical improvisations to the art of Qawwali, combined with his out-and-out daredevil style and his sensitivity, puts him in a category all his own." Probably the best place to start your Nusrat collection: what, you haven't started yet? --James Rotondi

    2.Great backup.
    3.Exellent rhytm.

    5 out of 5 stars Stunning.......2003-01-17

I am just blown away by this. This is the first NFA Khan
music I've listened to, but I want more. Its taken me a couple
of weeks to get into it, but now I can't stop listening.
Over a steady rythmic base of clapping and instruments Nusrat
lets his incredible vocal talents pour it all out.
The gravity and the wildness! There is a nice framework to
the music, but so much subtlety and variety over it,
absolutely brilliant, I haven't heard anything like it.
I suppose if you like songs like Kashmir, by Led Zep, Dream
Brother, by Jeff Buckley, or Leary's Gate, by Ian Moore, you
should check this out. All those songs are rock songs with an
Eastern vibe. Nusrat's music is the real thing.

5 out of 5 stars Masterly, mesmerizing, magical.......2002-08-12

Long, drawn-out, fiery performances. Not for the casually interested in Khan's music, but the aficionados will have a field day.

5 out of 5 stars Other Wordly Music from another World.......2002-04-12

This music takes you places. Though it's hard to listen to for extended periods, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan & Party chant, bebop, and Qawwali themselves into a burning frenzy. Even though I don't understand a word that's being sung, the emotion and spiritual devotion transcends the words. If you really care to know what the song's about, a translation is in the liner notes. But trust me, it really doesn't matter when the music plays, you can tell, they're real...they mean it.

I started out with Nusrat by buying the CD "Rapture" because it was the only one available in the store. I'm glad I didn't stop there and went ahead and got this CD. Whereas "Rapture" cuts off songs to make it more palatable for Western shorter attention span ears and includes Nusrat's misallocated foray into Western pop blend, "The Supreme Collection Volume I" explores the music to it's depth, as it was meant to be heard.

This music is rich and I can see why PJ's Eddie Vedder was influenced by it. Keep an open mind and open soul and be amazed by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Party whipping themselves up into a frenzy of sound. They're real...they mean it.

5 out of 5 stars Khan NEVER DISSAPOINTS !.......2001-11-26

I have had this CD for about a year or so and this is one of the most important CDs in my collection of Khan's CDs. Each of the tracks is something that you have to understand to enjoy and once you get to know what is the message in the words... then it is simply mesmerising.

A must for anybody who likes Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.
