3 out of 5 stars DISAPPOINTING.......2006-07-05

I was expecting to hear some of the old songs with the same arrangements and backup bands. I was surprised to find not one single piece the same as I remembered. If you have no comparison, you would probably enjoy this gifted songstress. I found the quality overall to be disappointing.

5 out of 5 stars You Can't Beat Mama? Join Her!.......2004-10-22

Mama Africa! What a proper name for the Queen of African Song. This collection has all the great songs from Miriam. It plays choronoligically from her earliest recording up to her most recent records. The melodies are infectious and Miriam makes you want to know more about the plight of the people of Africa she describes in her songs. This is a must-have for lovers of South African music.

4 out of 5 stars Good choice for new audience.......2004-03-17

As the previous review says, this is a good collection. However, as I was trying to replace songs from two albums which apparently haven't been released on CD (1960's "Miriam Makeba" RCA album and the early '60's Kapp Records album "The Many Voices of Miriam Makeba"), this CD wasn't what I was looking for. Most of the songs sound nothing like the arrangements I loved on those albums. They would be great for a new audience, but for those who are looking to replace those early '60's records, don't expect this to be the same. If your intention isn't to replace 40-year-old albums, though, I would definitely recommend this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Very nice.......2002-11-23

Buy this just for tracks 1,4,15 and so on. To hear the early version of this voice is a pleasure in it self. But to hear the growth and development of an artist of this caliber is a rare treat indeed. Oh go ahead you know you want it.

5 out of 5 stars Songs to warm the heart.......2007-03-28

I grew up with just one of Miriam Makeba's albums, the only one available at that time, simply called: Miriam Makeba. Technology has outdated the record albums, replaced with tapes and now cd's. That album, no longer available, I searched for some of my favorite songs, and they are here. Miriam Makeba has a beautiful voice, a warm voice. If you want an introduction to Miriam Makeba, I recommend this one.

5 out of 5 stars Majestic Mama Africa.......2007-02-24

Miriam gives another fabulous performance with this cd. Her versatility and talent shine brilliantly song after song. No one expresses emotion and vitality like this lady.

5 out of 5 stars A great musical instrumernt.......2006-08-20

I can't understand a word of it. But; her voice is a musical instrument as wonderful to hear as charlie parkers horn or george shearing's piano. A perfect evening a glass of fine wine and listening to the above.

5 out of 5 stars Makeba at Her Best.......2003-08-01

Mariam Makeba was and is a legend. Her introduction of African style music to the United States during the 1960s and 70s opened the way for many groups playing and singing folk-style and pop-style music with an African flavor. What can I say, Makeba is just wonderful in this series of songs mostly sung in her native Zulu dialect. I was fascinated by the fact that the various Bantu related languages have taken on some of the click sounds used by the Khoisan-speaking "bushmen."

This recording, more than any other, seems to me to capture the spirit of Africa that failed to be crushed by political repression. If you like African music you will like this CD!

5 out of 5 stars songs of infinite love.......2001-08-06

This collection features recordings made by Mariam Makeba from 1960 to 1965 in the USA. These recordings were responsible for the introduction of South African music to a larger international audience. Makeba's amazing personality shines through all of these songs, affirming her position as the queen of South Africa music. Later Makeba married one of the leaders of the Black Panthers, which caused the Authorities to deport her to Europe. Previous reviews mentioned "the retreat song" and "the click song" as outstanding. I love these songs but for me the second part of the CD (songs 12-24) is even more spectacular. A song of praise for Kenyan leader Jomo Kenyatta ("Pole Mze"), a song of love to the leading quatert of South African revolution - Subukwe, Lutuli, Mandela and Sisulu ("Nogqongqo" from 1965) and the everlasting "Kwazulu". Makeba delivers these with the utmost love that radiates straight into the heart. Through these songs I started to love South African music.

5 out of 5 stars Still Wonderful After All These Years.......2003-03-18

Not having heard this music for years (ok, decades), I was keeping my fingers crossed that the these songs would sound as terrific as I remembered. They do! Perhaps the original "world music" artist, Ms. Makeba's sound is timeless. From soothing lullaby to rousing wedding night serenade (the "Click Song" - hint: I don't think it's advice about joint checking accounts), these selections will bring you to your feet. Why did I wait so long to buy this CD?!

4 out of 5 stars Makeba the Magnificent!.......2002-07-12

I gasped when I saw this CD cover!

The two albums featured on this CD, "Miriam Makeba" and "The World of Miriam Makeba," were favorites of my mother when I was a little girl growing up on the south side of Chicago in the sixties. Mom played them so constantly I came to (phonetically) know most of the songs by heart by the age of nine, precociously singing along to "The Click Song," "Pole Mze," "Little Boy" and "Tonados De Media Noche"--to the great amusement of grown-up family members and guests. I was delighted to discover a Makeba CD featuring not just one but both albums and ordered it immediately, waiting impatiently for its arrival. Upon receiving it I eagerly placed it on my CD player, happily pressed PLAY, sat back smiling as my childhood came floating back to me...

...and was startled, puzzled and more than a little disappointed to discover what appears to have been an error or mix-up for one of the albums.

Though "The World of Miriam Makeba" contained all of the wonderful songs I remembered from my mother's album, many of the selections included for "Miriam Makeba" seem to me to be from a different Makeba record entirely!

Enjoyable as they are, I don't at all recall cuts like "The Naughty Little Flea" or "Olilili" or "Where Does It Lead?" etc., being on either original album, whereas songs like the playful "Can't Cross Over," the dreamy, sensual "(Love Tastes Like) Strawberries" and the heartbreaking lullaby (where a crooning mother consoles a hungry child--there is nothing to eat) "Ntjilo Ntjilo" are absent entirely--what happened here??

Even so, Makeba's voice is so strong and beautiful, and her command of her South African and international material so absolute, that regardless I have to give this collection at least four stars. Only the odd and annoying absence of the aforementioned and other remembered songs keeps this from being a five-star rave.

Buy, listen and decide for yourselves.

A sangoma is a traditional healer, one who channels the ancestral spirits who advise the living. On this impeccably produced CD, Miriam Makeba returns to her roots, singing the songs of her childhood, and in the process seeks to heal the wounds of apartheid and 30 years of exile from her South African home. The songs here are parables, lullabies, and gathering songs, deeply spiritual and moving. They are songs of struggle and perseverance delivered by Africa's best-loved voice. Mama Africa (Makeba's nickname) is joined by a group of soulful women singers. Some songs feature understated percussion; others are gloriously unadorned a cappella. This is an essential timeless album from one of the world's greatest singers. --Jeff Grubb

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing Grace.......2007-03-28

I grew up with just one of Miriam Makeba's albums, the only one available at that time, simply called: Miriam Makeba. Technology has outdated the record albums, replaced with tapes and now cd's. I love this album. Reading the insert, I find that Miriam Makeba is not only the singer, but she is the choir. Every voice in the background is Miriam Makeba. Recorded and re-recorded, it must have been an amazing effort for her. This album records songs passed on from generations past. It is good to know that these South African treasures will remain, I am assuming the songs are of Zulu origin.

    5 out of 5 stars Transcendent music........2001-08-11

IÕve had a cassette of this album in my car for more than a decade, and IÕm sure IÕve played it more than any of the dozens of other cassettes in the car. ItÕs one of the few I never get tired of hearing. Since the songs are all in Xhosa, I had no idea what Miriam Makeba was singing about, but there was something so warm and uplifting, so healing, about her voice, and the lilting rhythms of the songs, that meaning didnÕt seem to matter. Only recently I glanced at the liner notes and realized that most of the songs are essentially prayers. They call on the spirits of ancestors for help or strength, or praise them for the help theyÕve given. ItÕs transcendent, spiritual music Ð which I guess at some level I knew all along, even without understanding the words. That the sense of the songs is clear even if you donÕt understand the language tells you a lot about the power of Miriam MakebaÕs singing.

My six-year-old daughter also loves this album, and often asks me to play it. (She says her favorite singers are Raffi, Ella Fitzgerald and Miriam Makeba Ð an interesting trio.) I suspect MakebaÕs warmth comes through to any listener, no matter what their age. This is some of the most moving music IÕve ever heard.

4 out of 5 stars Very good... but not the best of Makeba.......2000-05-01

It's certainly a beautiful CD, with gorgeous music. But... I grew up with the music of Miriam Makeba on her older LP's, and quite frankly, her voice during the 60's and 70's was so exceptionally beautiful -- I truly think hers was one of the 2 or 3 greatest voices I've heard, up there with Ella -- that it's just not the same. Don't let me dissuade you from buying this CD, it's very, very good, and anyone who likes, traditional S. African music will *really* like this CD. But if you want to hear the real Makeba, with a voice so beautiful it sends a chill down your spine, you have to go to earlier materials. I hope the record companies release her early material some day.

4 out of 5 stars Makeba sings José Carlos Schwarz.......2003-06-04

Welela is my favorite Makeba CD. A bit on the upbeat, dancable side, her voice smoother than ever. In addition, on Welela, Makeba sings two songs by the late composer and Minister of Culture in Guinea-Bissau, José Carlos Schwarz (Dju di Galinha, and A luta continua). Makebas voice suits them well, and is a great inroduction to his music. Listen also to the Capeverdean Terezinha Araujo's incredibly beautiful interpretation of his "Apili" on the Simentera CD "Raiz"

5 out of 5 stars The Queen of African music.......2000-11-24

Known as the Queen of African music- this album is spell-binding and includes tunes Makeba sings in tribute to countries such as her homeland South Africa (which was in turmoil during the production of this album), Mozambique and Guinea.

A political histoy, a story and altogether compelling listening. Give it a listen.

    5 out of 5 stars Beautiful stuff!.......1999-12-01

This is my favorite Miriam Makeba CD. It has a jazzy sound and is very upbeat. Miriam was my introduction into African Pop and I am so excited that I discovered it! African music is my favorite music and this CD is one that is near the top of my list! I've recommended this to people and everyone that has purchased it, loves it!

      4 out of 5 stars A Pleasant Surprise.......2002-09-21

I bought this cd on a whim and was pleasantly surprised, especially at the sound quality. This cd is a collection of the Skylarks' best from the late 1950s. Nevertheless, the sound is quite good; in fact it sounds less dated than similar American recordings from the same era.
Miriam Makeba is a well-known singer from South Africa with a lovely voice. The Skylarks sound a great deal like American girl groups from the 1950s and early 60s, but I have to say that in my opinion the Skylarks are better. Perhaps because I was unfamiliar with the music, this cd sounds fresher and more interesting, and the songs themselves benefit greatly from their less produced sound.

4 out of 5 stars Love the first set, avoid the second.......2006-03-16

We had the LP of "An Evening with Belafonte and Makeba" when I was a kid, so I was thrilled to be able to get this reissue on CD. It's as great as I remembered it, and the sound quality is better than the original vinyl.

I would have been happy with just that album on the CD. To someone who didn't grow up with it and has no emotional attachment to it, "The Magic of Makeba" sounds very dated. The juxtaposition of the quasi-pop middle-of-the-road arrangements of that album with the pop African stylings of the first one is very jarring. I always jump to shut it off before the second set starts.

I'm still giving the CD a rating of 4 stars because the first set, the Belafonte & Makeba album, is so good.

        5 out of 5 stars Amazing Makeba.......2003-03-10

I have loved this lady's voice for a long time, but this CD takes the cake. The duets with Harry Belafonte are probably the sweetest duets I ever had, especially the Malaika duet. In the second set of songs, Makeba solos, she displays her range and proves she can sing more than African songs. Try this CD and you will definitely fall in love with her regardless of your taste in music.
