Antonio Carlos Jobim matita pere, look for the Verve anniversary re-issue of Jobim........2007-05-23

I purchased the CD matita pere for the striking photograph on the front sleeve, and wonderful Amazon customer reviews.

My import of matita pere was postmarked Argentina, I kept the postage stamps for a souvenir!

It wasn't untill I purchased matita pere, that I was able to figure out I owned the American version on a CD entitled Jobim.

By studying the liner notes I was able to determine the LP was recorded in New York, December 1972, and originally issued in the United States under the title, Jobim, in 1973 Mercury issued a version in South America, titled, matita pere.

Consider buying the Verve anniversary re-issue of Jobim first.

It is the same album, with all the original liner notes, all the original tracks in the same order, and the english version of Waters Of March that was the ninth track, or last song on the American LP.

matita pere only has eight tracks because the ninth track, or english version of Waters Of March was not needed to enrapture a Portuguese speaking audiance.

What?

It's nice to own both packages. A milestone, revered by fans the World over.

This was the first time I listened to Tom Jobim. It's one of his best works, a true work of art! How can someone not like it?

This is definately a serious composer at work here. I have my reservations, though, as to how this would be received by the public at large (at least in the U.S) were it to be better known. The title track is a beautiful composition, as is "Ana Luiza", although each evoke totally different feel and emotion. "Aguas de Marco" is unquestionably different on this CD than any other version, with Jobim 'double-tracking' his vocal; and I like it. I can't say, though, that it is "better" (the word is inadequate anyway) than the version by Joao Gilberto, who I think gives it the more "serious" treatment than does Jobim here. After all, it IS a very playful song, both melodically (with the 4/4 "march" samba alternating with the 2/4; as well as lyrically: the "sexual allusion", as Jobim calls it, of "es um Bela Horizonte"). Jobim and Elis Regina - whose version is sung all in Portugese - make a masterstatement with it. "Tempo do Mar" sounds very 'Villa-Lobos' inspired, and it, and the following track, "The Mantiqueira Range" show a Master composer at work - the latter being son Paulo's. "Cronica de Casa Assassinada", in 4 movements, is actually redone, or at least halfway so, on "Antonio Brasileiro Jobim". On that, Jobim's final CD, part A is called "Trem De Ferro"; and part B, "Chora Coracao", is done as a duet, with Jobim vocalizing some of the arrangement. It is stunning, and anyone who loves this CD and hasn't heard "Antonio Brasileiro Jobim" should get it forthwith. "Matita Pere" is a very special CD by a very special man.

It's a pity, that this one isn't more known, than is the case. It's definitely one of Jobims more "fullbodied" albums and shows that he wasn't just a great writer of bossa novas, but that his musical range was much wider and that he could write other types of music just as well. Besides the classic "Aquas De Marco" it also contains "Ana Luiza", which I think is one of his most beautiful and accomplished ballads. There actually was an american version of this album called "Jobim" that was released by MCA around '73. Besides the brazilian tracks this also contained an english version of "Aquas De Marco". Sadly it has never been reissued by MCA on cd, which probably, in part, acounts for the relative obscure existence of this album.

The other side of Jobim.......2000-02-13

The well documented history of A.C. Jobim somehow always marginalizes the period of Jobim's career that is BEST represented by this QUASI-NEGLECTED gem, Matita Pere-- Those who are aware of the Jobim that "is the father of bossa nova" or fans of the overproduced(MY OPINION-I dont mean to offend, and the arrangements are 'over the moon' )A & M Material should hear A.C. at his most creative. This music was produced at a time when Jobim was enamored of making orchestral music inspired by the great Brasilian composer, VILLA-LOBOS. The Jobim standard "Aguas Do Marco" is given a more thoughtful treatment here than on the duet recording,and only sung in Portuguese. Matita Pere is an amazing "suite-like" work that combines the orquestral W/ a beautiful yearning melody. Much of the record is orquestral, so lovers of "WAVE" & "TIDE" beware---this is a completely different feel. This is not "LIGHT" music! I suggest this purchase of cd to really "KNOW" all of this great modern composer's contribution to music! Far beyond the star system--but it! (also,"Urubu" is a "companion" cd in the same style & should be looked into also!

Antonio Carlos Jobim is remembered as one Brazil's greatest composers. He spearheaded the creation of bossa nova nearly a half century ago; he was also a musician whose talents extended far beyond that of a composer. His training was in classical music and he'd been involved with large-scale orchestral collaborations for his work over the years. This posthumous effort, recorded live in 2002, highlights many of those large-scale works, offering lush arrangements by the maestro himself, Claus Ogerman, and Nelson Riddle, as well as new charts by son Paulo Jobim and Mario Adnet. In addition to classical arrangements of such classics as "A Felicidade" and "Garota de Ipanema" ("The Girl from Impanema"), previously unreleased pieces "Preludio" and "Lenda" make their debut on this double-disc collection. This large canvas of sound deftly illustrates the beauty of Jobim's melodies, but the composer's majestic sense of harmony is really highlighted, thus offering up the biggest revelation of the project. Jobim loves people, and gets excited about all kinds of things, I'm sure there's certain pieces by Debussy and Ravel that made Jobim red in the face because they are so beautiful.

How does an Artist manage to be influenced and still a make a work of art their own?

Love and desire.

Symphonic Jobim strikes me as being very Nationalistic, a sort of spiritual road map to the heart of the World, and what better way to celebrate one's roots by drawing on the panorama of Rio and Brazil, or, Brasil.

Frank Loyd Wright once said, Architecture is frozen Music.

Jobim went on record, Music is frozen Architecture!

Historians say the height of Civilisation is the drawing in and taking out of water, music is like water, it comes in waves, when I listen to Symphonic Jobim all the public works are in place and working smoothly.

I was raised on Debussy and Ravel, but they're a little before my time, Symphonic Jobim puts life's panorama in perspective for me.

I don't have to be near a pretty picture window to drink in the scenery when I listen to Symphonic Jobim, the beautiful motifs conjure all kinds of pictures and feelings.

Every recording becomes a by product of the time period it was made, but Symphonic Jobim has a certain timelessness attached to it... it is a perfect piece of music beginning to end!

Symphonic Jobim, a Project by Paulo Jobim and Mario Adnet, does much credit to it's Composer. Good Job!

This fabulous concert comprises Brazilian melodies, both traditional and those composed by Antonio Carlos Jobim, with the ample talents of Paulo Jobim, Mario Adnet, and many top Brazilian arrangers and musicians. I was lucky enough to witness a live rehearsal of this concert last spring in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Very impressive! Lush melodies, orchestral arrangements of depth and complexity, the vocal majesty of Milton Nascimento and many others; all of the above add up to a very satisfying musical experience to anyone who loves the rich tasty delight that is Brazilian music.
