Heavenly Duduk

Djivan Gasparyan has been the primary ambassador of Armenian music to the world in the '90s, including in his collaboration with Canadian guitarist Michael Brook on Black Rock. While the fusions are interesting, this album gets back to the deep roots of the duduk, the Armenian wind instrument of which Gasparyan is an acknowledged master. Accompanied only by another droning duduk or zurna (a reed instrument) and the dhol (drum) and occasionally adding vocals, he explores ancient folk songs and dances, songs of troubadours and sacred music of the first Christian millennium. Gasparyan evokes a deep and abiding melancholy, a passion tempered by sadness. Even with the final piece, a wedding suite where his ensemble plays raspy zurnas and drum, the joyous occasion is marked by a contemplative longing that only toward the end breaks into a rousing dance. --Louis Gibson

I first heard the duduk on Peter Gabriel's soundtrack "The Last Temptation of Christ," and fell instantly in love with it. But it was Ridley Scott's "Gladiator" that alerted me to the name of Gasparyan. Exploration of this artist's materials has been immensely rewarding. In "Heavenly Duduk," the mournful strain of this clarinet-like instrument seems to spring from the tragic history that befell the country (of Armenia); and, even in its lighter moments, there is deep sorrow. The vocals - sounding remarkably like the duduk itself - also express the inescapable sadness. The duduk is an amazingly eloquent instrument, despite its limited register. If you wish to be transported to another realm, sample the artistry of this gifted musician.
