Nostalgic wonder.......2005-11-06

It's almost incredible that a CD like this may exist. A genius who has already passed out, was recorded and issued in CD with the best voice immaginable and an incredible sound. For people, as me, opera lover, but of deep Neapolitan origin, being my mother and grandpa, Neapolitan pharmaceutics living in Chile, it's of paramount importance to listen this jewels sung as popular sensible pieces and in authentic Neapolitan language, instead of being performed as operatic arias and in a language that's a sort of yelling stupid hybrid. I ordered this issue, even when I have stopped ordering for a while, in order to replace it that I had in a mini record, and deleted it by mistake, for the multiple value I give to it. it's the best I have listened in its cathegory and in my personal collection.

Another review here has hit the nail on the head. The key word is: SIMPLICITY. . . in its truest form. The other key words are BEAUTY and TRUTH. (Where I have heard that before, Keats lovers?) Murolo takes us through an often familiar repetoire of Italian favorites in a manner that cannot be surpassed. This is music at its most pure. There is no more poignant version of O Sole Mio than his, just a voice and classical guitar. Any serious music listener should have this moving and essential CD. This is MUSIC.

After listening to Pavarotti and other Italian singers singing Neapolitan songs...Roberto sings all those song in simplicity, bringing forward their true meaning. Roberto passed away last March but his voice and emotion lives through this CD.

IF YOU HAVE NEVER HEARD OF ROBERTO MUROLO LISTEN TO ONLY ONE SONG "CU'MME" IT CAPTURES THE TRUE SPIRIT & ROMANCE OF NAPOLI AND NAPOLITAN PEOPLE. I HEARD THIS SONG & OF ROBERTO MUROLO FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MY LIFE UNFORTUNATELY IN AMALFI 4 MONTHS AFTER HIS DEATH, THE ONE THING I REGRET IN MY LIFE IS THAT I WILL NEVER HEAR IT SUNG IN PERSON BY HIM AS I FELL IN LOVE WITH THIS SONG AS YOU WILL TOO.......

It is a very good selection of classic of neapolitan folk wich is rich of very skilled musicians and composers (Donizetti, bellini, mercadante, Leonardo da vinci....) an poets.
It is a very good selection but i think it is better to buy the FULL anthology NAPOLETANA by Murolo with about 400 songs in 7 cds chronologically ordered and critically explained with translations from neapolitan language to italian.

Absolutely Beautiful.......2000-10-20

This is the ultimate of all the Neopolitan compilations, feauturing both classics as well as rarities. Roberto Murolo interprets traditionals as wells as writes his own stories, music being the common thread which links the immigrant longing for home to the lover watching his lady sleep. Beautiful versions of 'Luna Caprese' and ' Maruzzella', and never heard versions of 'Sciummo' and the laughable 'Ciccio Formaggio'.

This CD is for those who love italian songs specialy from Napoli. Sound is good and Murolo is great. One needs however to understand a bit of italian in order to fully enjoy the poetry of Napoletan songs.

Napoletana V.1 by Roberto Murolo.......2000-01-16

All three volumes of this series are simply Roberto Murolo - his voice and his guitar - and Neapolitan music. The music spans the thirteenth to the twentieth centuries. Murolo is a fantastic artist. I used to own this series in vinyl format; they were bought in a street market in Naples in 1972. I was excited when they were made available in CDs. I lived in Naples for 3 years, and heard many of these songs. I received volumes 1 and 2 for Christmas and my Birthday. They've been in my car's CD player, and are getting a lot of air time. I'm writing this review at the same session at which I'm ordering volume 3. If you are at all familiar with this genre, or just like fun or romantic Italian music, try one (or one of Murolo's other CD's). I like Lo Guarracino - which describes the wedding party of two fish - for an amusing and impressive introduction to Murolo's Neapolitan dialect skill. His versions of the classics such as 'O sole mio and Torna a Surriento are beautiful. Warning: Some facility with at least the Italian language is a requirement. Lyrics of all songs accompany the discs, in Neapolitan, with summary translations into Italian, but there is no English translation that I've seen.
