The American release of this 1998 Lo'Jo album might be belated, but it's worth the wait, for this is the record that brings together all the elements of their sound in perfect balance. Denis Péan's gruff Gallic charm works off the Arabic harmonies of Yamina and Nadia El Mourid, while a flexible but powerful rhythm section coils behind the instrumental fire of violinist and kora player Richard Bourreau. The result is influenced equally by French chanson, Maghrebi rhythms, and the raw melodies of West Africa, all focused by a powerful individual vision that speaks particularly eloquently on "Sin Acabar" and the superb title track, whose chorus just explodes into the mind. World music for a new world. --Chris Nickson

Good cd, have liked it since I was younger. Very pleased w/ price and shipping time.

4 out of 5 stars Fun Ska CD.......2006-10-30

This is a very fun ska CD. The band is tight, the lyrics are cheeky, and the experience of listing to these guys will put a big smile on your face. Would highly recommned this CD to any ska fan looking for an addition to their collection. Also would recommend Save Ferris and anything by Bop Harvey.

5 out of 5 stars looking for an album to cheer you up?.......2006-09-08

this is by far the best cd reel big fish has made. there is not a song that i don't like on here. reel big fish can always cheer me up with their uptempo popska. this album ranges from the funny "she has a girlfriend now", to a little aggressive "skatanic", to just plain catchy "sellout" and "trendy." the only people who i know that don't enjoy this album, don't like this kind of music.

5 out of 5 stars buy this now!.......2006-08-31

If you're a fan of ska, you should definitely buy this album. hey, even if you don't like ska you should still buy this because it is just that good. This is probably the greatest reel big fish album ever (although they have never made a bad one).

5 out of 5 stars best ska cd ever.......2006-07-27

In my opinion, this is the best ska cd ever. I was first introduced to Reel Big Fish, like many of us, with the radio success of "sell out" around 1997. Over the years, i forgot about Reel Big Fish as my music choices went down the drain. However, about a year and a half ago, i saw this cd in the record store and picked it up.

My life was completely changed. This cd made me an instant ska fan, and I have continued to grow into a bigger ska fan since that time. "Turn the Radio Off" is filled with catchy rhythms, humorous lyrics, and fantastic horn lines. Even today, after the thousands upon thousands of times that I've listened to this cd, there is not a single song I can skip.

Whenever anyone asks me about ska, or "what's a good ska band", the first thing I tell them is to pick up this cd. This cd has made me the ska fan that I am today. This album is an essential to any collection, whether you like ska or not. Virtually every true music fan that I know loves this album, ranging from other ska fans to punk kids to alternative kids and even to emo fans. Go out and get this cd today, either here on amazon or at any record store. You won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars A ratatoiulle for the ears.......2006-06-12

No wonder this is album had a cult following in album before it hit the US shores. One of its tracks made it onto a Putumayo compilation, introducing listeners to a new world of French sound.

French music isn't always Serge Gainsbourg singing of ennui,or Edith Piaf with her tragic chanson (is there any other type?)This is perfect music for a bistro--provided they give you spicy North African couscous,Spanish tapas and Indian masala.

This is one of Lo'Jo's better albums--though they've never made a weak one.

Highlights-
1)Mojo Radio-Wonderful chorus.Catchy tune.Won't be heard on Top 40 Radio.Helas!
2)Rwandamnation-Lo'Jo isn't afraid of being political. This is a powerful song about Rwanda. The chorus of "this man is dead" is fierce, tragic.
3)Magdalena-A mysterious, bittersweet flamenco. It's barely three minutes long, but it begs to be repeated.
4)Kouchbene bellissimo-Don't know what this song means. It's great.
5)Dans la poussiere du temps-Another great song with strange words.
6)Si jamais si-Indian music is brought into the mix. It's in Sanskrit. It's not even three minutes long, but worth listening over and over.If only this were on the radio!
7)Si vaste-Lo'Jo can be melancholy without depressing. This is a powerful song about the vastness of the cosmos.

Lo'Jo is my favorite group!I reccomend this disk to anyone interested in world music!

4 out of 5 stars Layer cake of B-52s, polyrhthyms, a gruff French groaner.......2006-03-23

Most cuts follow a similar pattern: Layers of (1) a gruff old Groaner speak-singing most lyrics. (2) female singers caught in a bypass somewhere between the B-52s and the LaFlammes of A Beautiful Day, (3) either Arabic or African polyrhythms and mood tracks, and (4) added effects from, variously, accordion, violin, winds, reggae, birdsong, etc. And within this pattern, every cut is distinct. Mesmerizing in some places, fascinating in others. Full of many unexpected combinations. Always changing; always the same. Thirteen different savory stews made from similar, cross-cultural ingredients. [49:16]

5 out of 5 stars Unique and original world music........2002-05-24

...I'm an avid fan of world music. I have many CDs that span the musical ethnic spectrum, from African to Zydeco. I have enjoyed the cross-cultural experiments like Afro Celt Sound System. Nothing I have heard compares to the rich bouillabaisse of influences you hear in Lo'Jo. While the different influences are distinct and obvious from bands like Afro Celt, the real glory in Lo'Jo is the seamless weaving of all these influences into a dynamic, distinct, original sound. No band sounds like Lo'Jo. Denis Pean's gravely vocals, like a cross between Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen, and his harmonium (reed organ); the beautifully soaring and perfectly synchronized vocals of Berber sisters Yamina and Nadia; the violin mastery of Richard Bourreau, all backed by sizzling percussion and bass along with melodica, accordion, kora, djembé, and bendir. The ride is wild, as if the music is barely controlled and contained, about to bust out into wonderful chaos. Raw yet refined. The music takes you on a storied aural journey, from Parisian café to North African street market; the merriment of a gypsy encampment to a cabaret.

This CD was recorded and released in Europe before Lo'Jo's other CD, Boheme de Cristal, which appeared in the US before Mojo Radio. They're both phenomenal discs: while Boheme de Cristal is a little move even and consistent, Mojo Radio has more texture, it's highs are higher, it's lows lower (but still WAY above the mean of just about any band I know of)...

Interesting band, interesting people, GREAT music! And stay tuned: their new CD, "L'une des siens" should be here in the US this summer (2002)!

4 out of 5 stars GOOD BUT NOT GREAT.......2003-07-25

The first CD I bought of JIM SUHLERS was 'BAD JUJU'. It was recorded a number of years later and shows a lot of progress compared to this CD. There is nothing wrong with this CD, but it is very close to the stylings of GEORGE THOROGOOD and doesn't show the same originality as JUJU. Again not a bad song and a great driving or jiving CD. However all the touches that make JUJU a very original work are missing on this one. If good time boogie / blues / rock is your style, than nothing by SUHLER could ever dissapoint.

5 out of 5 stars The Monkey Beat.......2001-06-07

George Thorogood did the world a favor when he found this trio playing in a Memphis club back in the early 90's and this record proves him right. It jumps out of the CD player and it grooves with pure blues, rock and soul. These are all originals, except for a couple by Elmore James and Jimmy McCracklin. Enjoy!!

5 out of 5 stars Radio Mojo.....crank up the radio and get your mojo workin'!.......2000-03-09

Jim Suhler and Monkey Beat are truely a blues "diamond in the rough." You know you are in the presence of something special when every hair on your body stands on end, and you can't help but scream! My favorite tunes are "Oh Hannah" and "Devil's Hand" :)

5 out of 5 stars Awesome guitar!.......1999-11-01

The guitar on "Doncha Hang Around My Door" is electrifying. Makes me want to hang around the door no matter what they say! Monkeybeat grabs ahold of you and won't let go. You want blues? You want slide? You want rip-roaring guitar? You've come to the right place here. Can a person WEAR OUT a CD?
