Album Description

The Turtles are one of the most fondly remembered '60s pop acts—quite an achievement considering that they came up in an era dominated by Motown, The Beatles and other musical giants. After releasing a series of chart-topping singles, including the #1 hit "Happy Together," the band broke up in 1970. Singers Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan continued as a duo under the name Flo & Eddie, recording albums, hosting their own syndicated radio show, and singing backup for T. Rex, John Lennon, Bruce Springsteen, Blondie, and many others. In 1985, they reformed The Turtles as a very successful touring outfit.

Happy Together: The Very Best Of The Turtles collects the band's biggest hits, including the career-defining "Happy Together" and Top 20 smash hits "You Showed Me," "You Baby," and "Elenore." The album also features an early Warren Zevon-penned song, "Outside Chance," and Bob Dylan's "It Ain't Me Babe," as well as the classic protest anthem "Eve of Destruction."

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Great Groups Of Years Gone By.......2007-06-18

This is one of the groups of the 60's if you want something to remember, or learn about from back then. They had a lot of great hits along with Peter & Gordon, Chad & Jeremy, Herman's Hermits, Gerry and the Pacemakers, & the Lovin Spoonful, just to name a few. Don't take my word for it. Listen to the sample songs and buy it for yourself. I just happened to grow up in the 60's so I didn't have a problem loving every song. After you buy this you may want to try some of the other groups next. It becomes a Blast into the Past or for those like me, a trip down Memory Lane.

4 out of 5 stars A nice collection.......2007-04-14

This is a very good collection of the Turtles' biggest hits. Their lite, pop-rock was fun to listen too when I was a kid and still is! While some of the lyrics may not be the most profound, their music is enjoyable. My favorites are the classic "Happy Together", "You Baby," "She'd Rather Be With Me," "Elenore," and "It Ain't Me Babe."

5 out of 5 stars Happy Together..........2007-02-03

I'm a fan of 60's music. "Happy Together" is one of those songs of my elementary school days. I rate this classic collection five stars!!

5 out of 5 stars Cooking Turtles.......2006-11-10

These guys were great in the sixties.....Now those of us who once drifted away have come back and there we find the Turtles. Still sounding as good as they did back then...........it was great to run into these guys again...

5 out of 5 stars Feel good hits from the 60's.......2006-11-06

These are the essential Feel-Good hits from the 60's. This cd features most of the Turtles happy songs. There are a couple of minor hits missing, but they're hardly missed from this collection. The Turtles had the great talent of producing happy, playful songs (Happy Together) as well as meaningful music (Eve of Destruction). The music of the 60's is definitely represented in this greatest hits collection.

5 out of 5 stars Great to Hear All those great Voices from the Past.......2007-07-05

I just wanted to confirm what the first reviewer had to say about this CD. To hear Ethyl Merman, Mary Martin, Andrea McCardle etc. singing their trademark songs brought a lot of memories from the mid-centry musical theater back again. The last song by Glynis Johns is especially poignant.
You certainly can't beat the price!

5 out of 5 stars A Good One!.......2006-11-10

This is a very good CD, mostly because it's the original artists. I've had some that were re-recorded by no name artists that were ghastly. This one is a really good one--including the sound quality. If I had one wish, I would wish it were longer!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14

This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

3 out of 5 stars I have a question!!.......2005-11-08

The song touch of your hand is also performed by a girl, its the EXACT same song. Does anyone know who it is by?? PLEASE HELP I CAN'T FIGURE IT OUT!!

5 out of 5 stars Very Happy Together.......2002-06-02

I bought this on cassette when it first came out. After buy the same cassette twice more (I played them until the tape wore out on each one!) I finally bought it on CD. Infact I bought 2 CD's of this incase you can wear one out. We saw them in concert. This played at our wedding, and it played at my husbands funeral as well. I still love the clear crisp tones of there voices as they blend into a beautiful harmony.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful music.......2002-04-16

Four sexy male voices weaving around your head - like angels! An excellent album!

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic Vocals but . . ........2002-02-09

Without a question, on the basis of the vocals this CD is a solid 5+.

BUT . . . . . it sounds like when they put together these incredible a capella numbers and got the singing running as tight as Ferrari that some yoyo said, "Wait, my kid just got back from Sears with this nifty little synthesizer! Why don't we add some disco sounds - that will really make this stuff sell!!"

And all I can say is, "Why?"

In my opinion most of the needed percussion could have been better done with background vocals (like on the track, "A Touch Of Your Hand"). Granted on some numbers the "synthesizer" percussion fits but often it is just gets in the way of the incredibly expressive vocal work. It's like adding tin to gold.

For example, listen to the track, "It's What They Call Magic." What does the "drum" do for this song? It's just noise. Noise that stands in the face of the rich vocals. Same with "This Island Earth" which would have sounded even better as a pure a capella number. So for stuff like this I reluctantly rate the CD a 4.

Still a great recording. I heard this first as a cassette 10 years ago and it hasn't faded with time. Best tracks are "This Island Earth", "Grown Man Cry", "Crazy In Love" - all the tracks are worth hearing over and over - four superb male vocalists flying all over ten very creative, often high energy arrangements.

5 out of 5 stars Crawl Out of Your Shell With the Turtles!.......2005-07-02

Gear up that 1966 Dodge Dart 270 or that serious 1967 Plymouth Belvedere and get ready to enjoy some EXCELLENT music! The Turtles, an established rock band do not disappoint with this collection. The bonus tracks make a good thing even better and you might want to get a duplicate CD for when you are driving.

My favorite Turtles songs from 1966 are "You Baby" and "Let Me Be," neither are which are on this collection of later hits. Even so, nothing detracts from this collection and the songs on this will certainly delight most listeners. For people who love sixties rock, this is certainly a welcome addition to anybody's collection.

The Turtles were known for their exceptional harmonies and chord progressions and each song on this CD is definitely worth treating oneself to again and again.

Their runaway train of a hit in 1967, "Happy Together" has been a much beloved musical staple ever since. The songs in general tend to be upbeat, cheerful and just plain feel good.

5 out of 5 stars One Of Their Best.......2005-02-22

This album is just like a greatest hits album, although there are two songs were smash hits: "Happy Together" & "She'd Rather Be With Me" but the other tracks are just great. Even a casual Turtles' fan will love it too.

4 out of 5 stars Toss the dice.......2004-04-14

After The Turtles song "Happy Together" became a number one hit, their record company released an album with the same title. That's the way they did things back then. Along with the title track, the follow up smash hit "She'd Rather Be With Me" was also included. The rest of the album is basically made up of a random collection of songs from the same time period. The songs vary in quality, but most of them are good. The great "Me About You" is probably the best of these songs. The CD includes three bonus tracks. The hit songs "She's My Girl" and "You Know What I Mean" are great, but "Is It Any Wonder" is nothing special. Fans of '60s pop should enjoy this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Una lección de irresistible pop sesentero americano.......2004-02-16

4 out of 5 stars Great songwriting, extraordinary vocal harmonies........2002-11-08

With the bonus tracks added in, I'd say this is the best Turtles album one can get, short of a greatest hits album. By far my two favorite Turtles songs are "Happy Together" and "She's My Girl," both with extraordinary vocal harmonies and great chord progressions, and they're both on this album. All songs on this CD are decent at worst, great at best. Some other charted songs from this CD are "She'd Rather Be With Me," "You Know What I Mean," and "Me About You." Personally I never cared for the hit "She'd Rather Be With Me," probably since there's nothing that sounds like a chorus, only a wandering bridge that takes up the majority of the song. I remember hearing the pleasant love song "Me About You" for the first time on the radio in early 1969, despite "Happy Together" having been released in 1967. "Makin' My Mind Up" is a fast-paced, good-sounding, positive song in lighthearted '60s style. "Rugs Of Woods And Flowers" is a humorous, sarcastic love song with an affected voice, though I've yet to figure out exactly what is being lampooned. I believe the inspiring "You Know What I Mean" was on one of the Turtles' greatest hits albums.

5 out of 5 stars Kurt Weill: Re-discovery..........2006-11-10

I am so impressed and pleased to have found this recording on Amazon.com. I am always amazed when I find these seemingly obscure recordings, and thrilled to know they exist. What a wonderful history of our musical world---and what a chance to hear interesting, challenging, and unusual performances from so many well-known people. The songs live on--the composer is 'new' again, and this recording becomes part of history re-discovered. Thank you Amazon.com for your continued professionalism and for having these recordings available.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Live Album.......2002-02-10

This incredible concert (which i attended) benefitting The Actors' Fund of America, contains some absolute MUST performances for any Broadway collector.

For me, the highlights are HUGH PANARO ("It Never Was You"), NANCY DUSSAULT ("It's Him") and TIM CURRY singing "Surabaya Johnny" in German!

Loretta Divine, Brock Peters, they're all great!

Adaptation reunites Carter Burwell (of Coen brothers renown) with director Spike Jonze and writer Charlie Kaufman, the creative team behind 1999's Being John Malkovich, with equally noteworthy results. Although selections like "The Unexpressed Expressed" lean heavily on romantic strings, Burwell's harmonic progressions rarely culminate in obvious resolutions, mirroring the frustration of the film's protagonist, a screenwriter struggling to translate a nonfiction work into a workable screenplay. Less predictable timbres propel other cuts--"The Evolution of Evolution" marries kalimba and steel drums to Duane Eddy-style twang guitar and sly bass licks--and, as with Malkovich, the music of Adaptation often feels as though it were emanating from the murky ocean depths or the mechanized bowels of Big Ben. The disc is book-ended by Fatboy Slim's mercifully low-key "Adaptation" remix (essentially the vibraphone and harp vignette "The Writer and the Crazy White Man" plus a drum loop), and the Turtles' 1967 hit "Happy Together," a somewhat incongruous conclusion to Burwell's dark, riveting score. --Kurt B. Reighley

If only the person who put together the soundtrack for final release was half as intelligent as the genius charlie kaufman. The ORIGINAL soundtrack is great especially the track "adaptation" during the closing scene and credits. But on this CD its only a tedious remix by fatboy? slim? What a joke!

4 out of 5 stars Tell me where you're going to........2006-03-31

White Whale was a Los Angeles based independent record label that operated between 1965 and 1971. The Turtles were their most successful act, but they had a few other acts that managed to place singles in the Hot 100. Most of the tracks here are good songs that should have been hits, even if they weren't. I especially like "Follow Me" by Lyme & Cybelle and "All Strung Out" by Nino Tempo & April Stevens, as well as the songs by the Turtles, of course. A lot of these songs are downright obscure, and it's a real treat for pop music fans to have them on CD. The tracks are all in the original mono single mixes, with the exception of "I'll Hold Out My Hand" by the Clique, which is in stereo for some reason that I'm not aware of.

4 out of 5 stars Small label retrospective.......2001-12-31

For a few years in the mid-60s, White Whale records of L.A. put a stream of singles on the charts, headed by their flagship act, the Turtles. This compilation, with a sampling of the Turtles best-known tunes, includes eight top-100 songs along with a variety of singles that didn't get as far. While White Whale had its share of avant-garde material, where it succeeded best was with its classy, sophisticated pop productions. One prime example is "All Strung Out", Nino Tempo, with sister April Stevens', Spectorian pop extravaganza. Beyond the well-known Turtle tracks, this CD includes such rarities as Liz Damon's Orient Express' "1900 Yesterday", Rene and Rene's Latin hit "Lo Mucho Que Te Quiero" and Lyme and Cybelle's "Follow Me". All tracks are mono as they are single versions with the exception of track 17. The eight-page liner notes booklet offers up backround information on the included artists. Overall, an interesting gathering of tracks from this short-lived but productive independent label. For more detailed coverage of the artists on White Whale, there are several Turtles CDs available and Varese Vintage has reissued Nino and April's White Whale album with bonus tracks.

2 out of 5 stars If you enjoy your oldies in mono!.......2001-10-26

I honestly cannot recommend this cd for the following reasons- all selections with exception of I'll Hold Out My Hand are in flat and what sounds like totally unprocessed mono. Many of the songs have a lot of hiss also.I have the cd copy of the Clique lp and it sounds really good in full digital stereo. Ihonestly bought this because I was looking for a clean cd copy of Friends by Feather. The copy here sounds like they pressed it too "loud". It really doesn't sound much better than my original promo 45 copy!. The bottom line is why not remix what they could in true stereo and at least do some reprocessing to enhance the selections that were in mono. I think they just threw it together and really didn't care about the sound quality. What a shame with some real obscure gems here too. Better luck next time White Whale Records. Thanks for the memories!

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Overview of an Interesting Independent Label.......2001-05-03

If you are looking for an album of the more obscure things you've never come across, this is the CD for you. This focuses on the White Whale label started in 1965. The Turtles were the well known act, but others (The Clique,John's Children,Matthew Moore Plus Four) are the ones to check out on this disc. All tracks, like the original 45s are in mono (except "I'll Hold Out My Hand" by The Clique, which was issued in stereo and is here) and this is a trip back to the underground music and forgotten classics from the 60's. Although there are a few more songs that call for inclusion, and some album tracks (namely from JK and Co's "Suddenly One Summer" album!) this is worth you time and is a collector's dream. Lots of music on here you won't find anywhere else.

5 out of 5 stars One of America's great songwriters.......2001-03-09

Amid the Cole Porters, Irving Berlins and George Gershwins of the world, Harold Arlen tends to be forgotten. And yet, when the greatest song of the 20th century was recently voted on by a distinguished panel of critics, whose song came out on top? Mr. Arlen's (Over the Rainbow). Here is a superb cross section of Harold Arlen songs by a cast ranging from Judy Garland to Bing Crosby to Ethel Waters, spanning decades and spanning a wide range of styles, from jazz to ballads, poignant to funny. Although the sound is not ideal, as many of the recordings date from the 30's and Pearl's objective in remastering has always been to achieve the fullest musical sound rather than to reduce surface noise, this is a minor complaint given the rich and mind-opening selection of great music found here.

    Product Description

With a musical family background that includes legendary performer Eddie Cantor and popular composer Jimmy McHugh, its no surprise that Lee Newman is a natural at writing and performing music. His critically acclaimed debut album, Relatively Singing, is a tribute to his celebrated musical family. Lees second release, on SLK Records, Lee Newman, Happy Together: The 60s Songbook, released on April 11th, is a collection of classic pop songs from the sixties. Produced by Lauren Wild (Carly Simon, Rod Stewart), the record is filled with timeless tracks, including a never before heard version of the Beatles song Help that John Lennon wanted to re-record. There are a lot of great stories surrounding the making of this album, says Lee. We hadnt considered doing any Beatles songs until a close friend of John Lennons, who consulted on my album, suggested that I record Help in the way that Lennon had wanted to re-record it long ago. She brought a demo of him singing the song as a ballad. It was then that I decided to record the song. What came out of those sessions was a surprise to all of us. Lee began work on the album last year, first putting together an amazing group of musicians, all having played on the Grammy Award winning Rod Stewart record and Carly Simons most recent Grammy nominated release. Six months later, the thirteen track CD was finished. Lees background in performing extends beyond music. After graduating from UCLA, he studied at the Michael Chekhov Studio in New York City with Oscar winning actress Beatrice Straight. Three years later, he worked with his idol Harry Nilsson when he was cast to play the role of Oblio in the L.A. stage production of the musical The Point! Harry has been my biggest influence and working with him was definitely one of the high points in my career. I have dedicated this album to his memory.
