About the Artist
Amy and Willie is so unique, and their artistry so interconnected that when each develops an independent musical thought, it is usually a mirror image of the other. Yet, each artist is uniquely, artistically independent of the other.

BAND_MEMBERS: Willie K., 6-string guitar, 12-string guitar, classical guitar, ukulele, acoustin bass, percussion Amy Hanaiali'i Gilliom-vocals

Product Description
Almost always, when one previews a new album, one hears the notes first, then the words, then the musical setting. It is a rare experience when one hears all the elements as a single unit. When this happens, in extraordinary cases, it creates a reaction in the listener that is beyond words. The silence within the listener becomes thunderous. So it is with the album, 'Hanaiali'i'. Amy's intese, but gentle interpretation of what Hawaiian lyrical poetry really is. Willie's multiple-intricate, then simplistic, then bombastic musical brush strokes create ever elegant, watercolor-like musical washes that are a platinum-plus setting for Amy's sensitive, all-emotion-producing moments of musical realization.

    Album Description

Amy's affection for her island music is totally visible in this collection. Amy's kama'aina family roots vibrate joyously with the sound of her unusual musical accomplishment and performance in this, her first truly Hawaiian album. A contemporary, yet respectful, exciting musical adventure performed by a young, consummate artist who understands the importance of the musical traditions of old Hawai'i and the gift of freedom of musical expressions bestowed on the now generation of Hawai'i.

1 out of 5 stars Avoid all her albums!.......2006-06-19

The popularity of Amy Gilliom is an ongoing mystery to me. Apparently, she was classically trained and started off as a Country singer. She should have stayed that way.

She does have a strong voice with a fairly pretty tone. However, she hasn't a clue how to use her voice. She sings all over the place with little attention to expression and coherence.

Ms. Gilliom needs to learn that singing is not about flash and technique; it is about communicating from one heart to another--at least in this type of music:.

If all of the above seems harsh, I would suggest this: Compare Amy with

Willie K who sings on some of her albums. Note the difference in expressiveness between the two.

Raiatea Helm (a younger singer) who is a far superior singer to Amy.

Genoa Keawe (the legend) who is also way better than Amy.

Nalani Olds (an older singer) who sadly does not get a fraction of the recognition that she deserves.

When you compare you will hear the difference and, I think, agree that Amy just doesn't have it. At least not yet.

    5 out of 5 stars Mahalo, Amy.......2004-07-13

Anytime Amy & Willie K get together, something magical happens. Aside from being the most beautiful woman in Hawaiian music, Amy has a voice that is at once contemporary and timeless. She brings her own voice to this collection of Hawaiian classics, and while she makes them her own, she never forgets the heritage of the music. Cool, relaxing, and beautiful...

About 2 years ago, I was at the Cazimero's May Day Concert when out booms this voice like no tomorrow. HO ka, Aunty can sing! I was full-on blown away.. it gave me chicken-skin that I remember to this day. Such good fun! My favorites: Hale'iwa Hula (very catchy, playful song & was on KCCN for the longest) & I Ali'i never fails to inspire that mane'o feeling.. =^^= I highly recommend this album if you like falsetto like Aunty Genoa (cover look familiar, eh?).. a new generation to carry on the tradition with a modern twist here & there.

5 out of 5 stars New Generation, Old Traditions.......1999-10-07

Traditional Hawaiian Music beautifully done. Brings you back to Hawaii then, appreciating our homeland. For others, listening to Amy will give you the feeling of being in Hawaii and what the people and culture here is all about. A Favorite is Haleiwa Hula. Haleiwa is a town on the Northshore of the Island of Oahu; a town that was Queen Lili'uokalani's playground. Enjoy!!

For anyone who loves Hawaiian music, Hawaii or the Hawaiian people, this is a must have. If you cannot take a vacation to Hawaii this is the best alternative. Save your money, don't go anywhere else - take a trip to the islands through her lovely hapa voice.

My wife and I are from Oah'u and had decided the cost of living too prohibitive - but Amy's voice makes us so homesick , we just might move back.

    Mahalo Amy for your work.

    5 out of 5 stars Unbelievably beautiful.......2004-01-02

I was in Kauai researching my newest novel and wanted to buy a Hawaiian album for mood setting while I write. The first notes I heard at Hilo Hatties nearly made me gasp. Amy's voice is unbelievably pure and mingles with the music in a way I've never heard. I bought it and listen to it constantly, even though I haven't started the new novel yet. I'm a new fan and want to buy all their music. Even if you don't normally listen to Hawaiian music, you'll love this album and the amazing blend of voice and music.

5 out of 5 stars Heaven-sent music from the land of aloha.......2001-11-07

When Amy Hanaiali'i Gilliom recorded this with then-boyfriend Willie K., it was her third album, her second as a Hawaiian artist. Her voice is so pure and beautiful, one might believe they died and went to heaven. This album is a mix of contemporary tunes and classic hulas, like the "KHBC" song. There's even a jazz-flavored track (going back to her jazz roots) with a nice piano solo from none other than Hawaiian music legend Robert Cazimero. If you're new to Hawaiian music, this is the perfect introduction. If you have Gilliom's other albums but not this, what are you waiting for?

5 out of 5 stars A Poignant and Beautiful Collection of Hawaiian Music.......2000-02-11

I learned as much about the soul of the Hawaii by listening to this CD as I have from living in the islands for nearly 20 years! Gilliom's voice is excruciantingly beautiful. It has a pure clarity to it that is matched only by the love it expresses for the lyrics and music. Her voice is so gently expressive that one can grasp the meaning of the songs, whether or not the language is understood. Luckily for those of us who do not speak Hawaiian, however, an English translation is included with most songs. I am grateful for the translations, as Gilliom's lyrics are lovely snippets of spare and simple poetry. Willie K, a powerful and respected talent in contemporary Hawaiian music, graciously allows Ms. Gilliom to take center stage while accompanying her with superbly sublime instrumentals. Although it is difficult to pick a "favorite" song, I must admit a partiality to Wahikuli. This tells the tale of a Maui sea spirit (my ha`ole interpretation) that watches over happy children playing in the gentle waters. Each time I watch my son and his young friends splashing around joyfully in our Bay, I am reminded of this hauntingly beautiful and happy song. If you are interested in hearing how talented contemporary young artists pay tribute to to their culture in a traditional manner, I strongly recommend checking out this lovely body of song.

I was searching the net for a good hawaiian music singer and I happened upon Amy Gilliom. I listened to the first song "Aloha No Kalakaua" and immeditately fell in love with her voice. I purchased the CD from overstock.com and now know all the words because I have listened to this CD over and over again. (For a preview go to her website.) It is so beautiful. Everyone who listens to my CD wants to know who she is. Amy Gilliom's voice is impeccable. She has a warm, full, rich resonant tone. I've read that she is a trained singer who has returned to her native song. This has made for the best of both worlds. This CD includes the hawaiian and english translation. I have this CD in my car right now. ENJOY :o)

All 12 of the songs featured on "Nostalgia" have been meticulously researched and interpreted into the Hawaiian language. Amy Hanaialii combines her classical vocal training with the Hawaiian traditional art of falsetto singing in these alluring sounds of the past with a fresh interpretation. Willie K lends his incredible arrangements to each song in a diverse range that promises something for everyone.

From the fun-loving, energetic "Rock-A-Hula Baby" to the bluesy, sultry "Beyond the Reef" and to the classic strains of "Aloha Oe," this album is a must-have for Hawaiian language enthusiasts, fans of old Hawaii, and anyone with a passion and longing for the tropical sunsets, white sandy beaches, trade winds and "Nostalgia" of Hawaii.

If ever there was a reason to preserve the Hawaiian language, this CD is it. From the playful Little Grass Shack to the haunting Aloha 'Oe this album just jumped to the top of the stack of my Hawaiian music CD's. My thanks to Mahlon for the introduction to Amy.

As a bonus, you can experience Willie K from a new, exciting perspective.

2 out of 5 stars Not as good as the promise.......2001-11-07

I still find it hard to listen to this. Amy Hanaiali'i Gilliom sounds rushed and tired, while the musical arrangements are close to embarrassing. I don't know if this was the Willie K. experience, but it's hard to listen to this CD without saying "auwe, dees one is pretty terrible." Had it been arranged differently I would have been satisfied. This could have easily put her in the "where-is-she-now?" file but she has since redeemed herself with her follow-up.

5 out of 5 stars Modern Styles, Hawaiian Lyrics.......2000-11-22

I found this disc while in Hawaii and was captivated. Amy is a wonderful vocalist and Willie K's arrangements are varying and interesting. Sure, it's not all traditional Hawaiian arrangement because many of the songs have a twist, from blues to southern rock styles, but they are all very cool to listen to. I love it!

    5 out of 5 stars Nostalgia.......1999-12-10

We really liked this CD! The music is crisp and arrangements are pleasing. The contents are familiar "hapa haole" songs translated into the Hawaiian language. "Hapa haole" songs had previously been written mostly in English as an introduction to island music. Most of them were played on the old "Hawaii Calls" type programs - from about the mid-40's. It is a pleasure to now have these recognizable songs in Hawaiian.
