Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Revisit to an older style; Formulaic and Fairly Dull.......2006-05-30

Sol Invictus returns with a darker and more basic style similar to their earlier stuff, a complete 180 from the bright and jazzy direction the last few albums were going in. Not bad, but overall a little overdone already in my opinion. There are some strings, pianos and brass instruments but they aren't terribly prominent. There are a few old industrial sounding noises floating around reminiscent of Lex Talionis. Props to the band for trying to revisit their old style but these songs really don't lure me in with overwhelming emotion like "The Blade" and "In the Rain" still do, they are very formulaic. I'd have to say I like most of their albums better than this one so far, hopefully it will grown on me a bit. But it still isn't horrible, just kind of disappointing and stale.

The Best: "Where Stone Lions Prowl" may be my favorite track here. It is actually a quite lush and calm, longer track with prominent strings, and is about 80% instrumental. It could be so much more though. "Old London Weeps" is also a great new track, very reminiscent of "The Blade" sound with some nice cascading strings, pianos and acoustic guitar the last minute or so. "Semaphore Seasons" is probably my third favorite and is another good quality new track.

The Worst: "Twa Corbies" is recycled from an older album... isn't it? "There Did Three Knights Come From the West" is EXTREMELY repetitive lyrically and musically. "A Steed for the Devil" is kind of an experimental instrumental containing blaring loud off-tone brass instruments, kind of annoying if you ask me. "Come winter Rain" is an extremely stagnant instrumental.

And this may be a good or a bad thing, but this is a pretty long album for Sol Invictus, just about an hour. I can't think of too many studio albums if any are longer than that.

Old time Sol Invictus fans might be pleased with this album, but don't exactly expect anything refreshing or innovative. I guess after 18 years they are running out of ideas a little. Let's hope this is just a slump and they will bounce back and give us a killer album next.
