This recording absolutely roars, from its broken-speaker spoken intro through every last one of its ripping guitar solos and gritty lute riffs, from searing lead vocals to an angelic backing choir. From the little-heard-from nation of Niger, this band covers a spectrum of Sahelian music, with hints of Bambara, Hausa, Fulani, and Songhai heritage drifting through this creative and original pop music. The interplay of electric guitar and traditional gut-stringed acoustic instruments is the keystone of this band's unique sound, led by Housseini Namata Chibkabou's masterful playing of the mola and komsa lutes. Driving tempos are the rule here, whether they reflect local dances or straightahead Euro-pop grooves, with a solid rhythm section pushing along the call and response of the voices. Raspy flutes add still more local edge. Mamar Kassey has bridged the gap between raw roots and sophisticated new music with talented musicians, sparkling arrangements, and solid songwriting, and offers a taste of how "Afro-pop" should be. --Louis Gibson

5 out of 5 stars A "Regular People" Review.......2007-02-17

In my opinion this is the most solid disc of Lieder I have heard. The music and the performance are great. I would definitely go for this if your new to Lieder and want to get your feet wet. And maybe next you'll want to try Brahms' Deutche Volkslieder, which I think takes a little more effort to get into, but is great none the less.

5 out of 5 stars Epitome of Lieder singing.......2006-07-26

It really amazed me to learn from the booklet that Elisabeth Schwarzkopf was never totally confident in taking on the songs of Schubert, mostly due to the fact that a lot of them are simply based on poems with a man being the character. With her wonderful tone, fastidious attention to detail and the true German spirit, she would have been able to perform them much more extensively. Whatever the case, the 24 songs featured on this disc are a true delight from start to finish. The CD starts with the joyful atmosphere of the songs "Die Vogel" and "Liebhaber in allen Gestalten " which obviously were recorded very early on in Schwarzkopf's career, showcasing her in carefree, simple and amazingly fresh mood. Then comes the core of the CD-the classic recital with Edwin Fischer at the piano. Nothing really needs to be said here. Schwarzkopf shines throughout with beautiful tone, flawless diction. She may be mannered, yes, but she also does justice to the poetry like I never heard from anyone before, of course with the exception of Fischer-Dieskau. Edwin Fischer plays with taste, bringing out all the demanded atmosphere: from the serenity of Im Fruhling to the intensity of Die Junge Nonne. The sound is pretty old but the balance is perfect and both Schwarzkopf and Fischer are caught in a great day. The other items on the disc are recorded later on in Schwarzkopf's career, when her tone has darkened, thinned down a bit but always radiant and the fastidiousness and artistry even more significant; and Gerald Moore and Geoffrey Parsons are delightful pianists. The remaining songs include a high-spirited Die Forelle and Seligkeit, a wonderfully introspective Der Einsame and a moving and gorgeous An mein klavier (although she seems to miss a breath for a tiny fraction of a second at the beginning of the 2nd verse). The final "Erlkonig", one of her most favorite recordings, is a track that will knock you off your seat with its intensity. Parsons's playing is adequately intense, and Schwarzkopf's "mannerisms" which the Schwarzkopf bashers love to hate, are deadly powerful in pointing out all the 4 characters of the demanding lied. Be warned, the cry of "gewalt" by the end of the lied will cause your heart to miss one beat! Sound recording gets better throughout the CD, from acceptable mono of the first 2 songs to the crystal-clear stereo of the final items.
Highly recommended. Masterful singing from the queen of German lieder.

5 out of 5 stars Prime Schubert lieder recordings from Fischer-Dieskau's prime years.......2005-11-10

DG released this recording of Schubert lieder based on texts of Wolfgang von Goethe in the late 1990s. I bought it in 1999 on the strength of a review in AMERICAN RECORD GUIDE, where the reviewer said "Fischer-Dieskau could do it all" - an apt description. Keep in mind that many of these tracks are with pianist Jorg Demus, and are not the same as those in Fischer-Dieskau's 2 big DG boxes (9 disc each) of Schubert Lieder, which are with pianist Gerald Moore.

These recordings date from the late 1950s and early 1960s when Fischer-Dieskau (b. 1925), was in his mid 30s, and in great shape vocally, performing lieder and opera all over Europe, + prolifically making recordings for EMI and DG which were released on LP in the US and Europe.

This is a valuable disc for those wanting a sampling of Schubert lieder, or a sampling of Fischer-Dieskau and aren't interested in collecting all of F-D's recordings, or all the Schubert lieder. The sound is stereo, and is very good: vivid and life like. Even though these were recorded 45+ years ago, I feel Mr. Fischer-Dieskau right in the room with me when listening to these. The last several tracks are with Gerald Moore, pianist, Fischer-Dieskau's long time collaborator on lieder of many composers.

Schubert's sound world is a different, more intimate one than Beethoven, his contemporary. The lieder Schubert set with texts of Wolfgang von Goethe are among his most famous and for good reason: they are among his most inspired works. Listening to these lieder, one can get away from the rat race, from our high tech, cold, mechanical, materialistic world, and have a great musical/spiritual experience. Thank you: Deutsche grammophon for releasing this, and thank you, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau for sharing your great talent with the world! Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau can do it all, to which this disc attests.

5 out of 5 stars The heart of Schubert, the emotional gamut of Goethe.......2004-04-22

This collection of the Goethelieder is genuinely the "gold standard" against which all others should be judged. I say this because not only have I heard the majority of the works by other baritones (and "Der Erlkonig" performed by two mezzo-sopranos): however, I've followed the vocal development of Fischer-Deskau from the earliest CD I could find (from an EMI CD containing Der Erlko"nig from 1951 according to the booklet's timeline--with Gerald Moore on piano.) Another recording dates from the mid 1960's (Erlko"nig, for example, dated as 1965--again, Gerald Moore, pianist.) However, when I heard this collection of Schubert's Goethelieder, I was entranced. Selections 1-14 feature Jo"rg Demus as pianist (with whom Fischer-Deskau formed a close professional and personal relationxhip) and Gerald Moore as pianist on selections 15-24. Fischer-Dieskau's "Heidenro"slien" is so good that even I play it over and over (although I've heard it so much...Fischer-Deskau gives it a beautiful rendition.) His "Erlko"nig" is such that he gets the four voices of the narrator, the child, the father, and the Erlko"nig so well it is astonishing. Gerald Moore also performs the initial ascending triplet figures on the left hand in paralell octaves so well that it sounds like one pianist is playing the right hand triplet figures whereas another pianist is using two hands to play the left parallel octaves!!
This is a MUST HAVE for Schubert/Fischer-Deskau/piano lovers!!
Five stars hands down and thumbs up!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Resurrection Through Remastering.......2005-09-27

Modern science does indeed concern itself with the arts when it comes to state of the art remastering of some albums made too many years ago, before even stereophonic recordings were available. Such is the case with this newly released, remastered recording originally made back in the aurally immature 1950s. The original recording still exists (it has been worn thin in my collection) but this new edition on CD surpasses anything one could hope for.

But first things first. The Recital here is a shared one: Elisabeth Schwarzkopf offers twelve inimitable Schubert songs with the radiance and inner intelligence that marked her fine career. Her voice gleams and is silvery in the finest sense of the 'German sound'. Though she never was able to pull off the Italian repertoire, she was a brilliant interpreter of Mozart and Strauss on the opera stage. On the recital stage she, as a soprano, virtually owned the works of Schubert, Schumann, Wolf and the other Romantics. There is a wondrous communication in her singing, the knowledge that she is always placing the composer first without mannerisms that would stamp her singing as 'Schwarzkopfian'. For this set of songs she is matched with the equally fine pianist Edwin Fischer: this is a true collaboration. Find a finer 'An die Musik' or 'Im Frühling' if you can: there simply aren't many as sung by a soprano!

The second portion of the Recital belongs to Fischer and he plays Schubert's 'Moments musicaux for piano, D. 780' as if to the music born. This is magnificent pianism and interpretation. When the entire recital is played it makes the kind of sense that few artists offer today. This is a terrific musical experience. Grady Harp, September 05

    4 out of 5 stars A memento of a productive partnership........2001-11-19

EMI commemorate in this double CD a remarkable partnership in the C20th world of music. It began in Berlin in 1926. It had been 20 years since Franz Lehar's "Die lustige Witwe" became the light opera that everyone wanted to see. In places like Beunos Aires it had run simultaneously in five theatres in five different languages. Lehar's subsequent productions had met with diminishing success. His latest light opera, "Paganini", which contained some of his best music, had flopped at its Vienna premiere. Nervous and dispirited as its Berlin premiere drew near, Lehar wrote to the tenor Richard Tauber, "You must sing in Berlin, a second flop is inconceivable for me. I'm suddenly afraid of everything to do with the theatre - I'm getting old".

Tauber obliged. The Berlin production was a resounding success, Tauber sometimes being required to repeat "Gern hab' ich die Frau'n gekusst" as many as five times. Lehar admitted, "Richard, during this moment I have been born again as an artist!" And so began a great final flowering of Lehar theatre productions, all featuring the Austrian tenor Richard Tauber.

Fortunately the Lehar-Tauber association resulted in an extensive series of recordings, in many of which Lehar conducts the orchestra. EMI began issuing a collection of them towards the end of the LP era, and now, in 2001, they are collected onto this double CD. I read the claim that a great many of the tracks appear on CD for the first time, but here in Australia most have already been available on CD.

I don't always find Tauber unexcelled in this repertoire, preferring other tenors sometimes and their recordings. Several of the "Paganini" recordings were made before the Berlin season opened. Tauber and his then wife Carlotta Vanconti sound as though they are sight-reading unfamiliar music. I once possessed several of the "Das Land des Lachelns" items on 78s. The 1929 sound seemed robust and full then, but seems sadly emasculated here.

Tauber, I believe, somehow had the secret of touching the hearts and minds of all who listened to his singing - composers, colleagues, chancellors and charwomen. Jan de Gaetano is a wonder to listen to under any circumstances. But the duet, "In der Nacht" is one of the most transcendent recordings I have ever encountered.

    .
Of over 600 songs, Fischer-Dieskau and Gerald Moore realized over three-quarters: these are those. Gerald Moore was of course as important to this project as Fischer-Dieskau.

    DGG's sound is excellent.

This set is a remarkable document of art.

    Amazon.com essential recording

One of the bewitchments of this performance is that Pierre Boulez leaves unreconciled the two conflicting tendencies of Berg's music--on the one hand, grand Romantic opera; on the other, dodecaphony. Their clash is the hinge of Berg's exhilarating composition, and, once perceived correctly, it's a drama of almost unbearable intensity. The dense instrumental texture is brought out in stunning detail. Yes, Teresa Stratas is occasionally unsteady in the title role; but this is the King Lear of opera roles: probably unperformable and altogether unforgettable. --Joshua Cody

    5 out of 5 stars UNREAL.......2006-07-15

If you look at all my reviews , many are quite long-winded. I always have alot to say on things most important in my life.
But here I have only one word to comment on the music and the performance.
    UNREAL
there thats my review. Sure I know that is not helpful in any way, and please give me a vote of "NO".
I should mention that Berg did not complete the opera but left extensive notes so that Friedrich Cercha completed it. Boulez mentions that a scholar named adorono felt satified with Cercha's work, and Boulez agrees.
but I'm not so sure. The first 2 cds are clearly from the hand of berg, from the opening of the 3rd cd, immediately I/you notice that there is a drastic change in compositional quality. Its the best Cercha could do, and its good work. Just not near on the level as Berg's completed first 2 cds of music.

    4 out of 5 stars Excellent achievement.......2001-08-31

When I discovered Alban Berg's opera "Lulu" it changed my life. It was a recording from the year 1965. The orchestra was conducted by Karl Böhm being Lulu the great Evelyn Lear. (That was a DG recording like this) Though Böhm's orchestra was not, precisely, inspired, Lulu's character depicted by Evelyn Lear became a myth for me. I had read before the plays "Erdgeist" and "Die Büchse der Pandora" by Wedekind on which Berg's opera is based, and always loved the complex character of Lulu beautifully depicted by Evelyn.
Teresa Stratas is very irregular in the role. Her screams are maybe better than that of Evelyn, but she seems uncomfortable with the role, apart from the lack of entonation and strength. Boulez' orchestra is wonderful but sometimes one miss the fact of bringing the main voices to the first plane.
From my humble point of view I think that this recording is an excellent one but I prefer Böhm/Lear/Fischer-Dieskau//Deutschen Oper Berlin (in DG). The listener has to take into account that the third act completed by Friedrich Cerha is not present in that recording. If the listener wishes the complete opera, Boulez/Stratas/... is then the reference.

1 out of 5 stars A Travesty from start to finish.......2001-08-30

Famously, Pierre Boulez suggested that all opera houses should be blown up. There is not one bar on this recording to indicate any change of perspective ("change of heart" is evidently not an appropriate expression here). Bluntly and simply, Boulez loathes drama, and doesn't seem to care much for music, either. If you like your music drama joyless, pedantic, and frequently perverse, this is the one for you. A decent cast and band gone to waste on the altar of anti-bourgeois condescension.

    5 out of 5 stars Marvelous.......1998-11-14

There's really no use in trying to review this album; just imagine every glowing superlative you can and it would apply. I never thought it possible to fall in love with serial music, but "Lulu" made me do just that. Berg really can write twelve-tone music that soars, and the cast that delivers his completed masterpiece on this recording can't be beat. Each and every one of them is an accomplished vocal actor (thanks in part to having all participated in the premiere of the three-act version in Paris in the late 1970's). The recorded sound is incandescent; this is one of the most marvelous studio opera recordings ever.

5 out of 5 stars The joy, the wonder, the awe, the eagerness........2003-02-04

"I am happy to have been associated with the music of the most Viennese of all composers Franz Schubert." Such was Elisabeth Schumann's modest way of referring, during a BBC radio broadcast in August 1951, to a very successful time in her career when her lieder recitals and recordings were in demand everywhere. During the 1930s she probably received more invitations to record individual songs, especially Schubert lieder, than any singer up to that time. Indeed, more items were recorded than could keep pace with release schedules, and several had to be exhumed from EMI vaults many years later.

From her Schubert recorded legacy of 49 items, restoration engineer Ward Marston has prepared a selection of 28 for inclusion in this Naxos CD issue. Not all collectors will be happy with the selection. I regret that the first item, "Der Post" and also "An die Musik" were selected. The latter apparently simple song needs a singer with a sturdier lower register than Elisabeth Schumann retained in 1936.

Elsewhere you will find much to treasure and a few things that might irritate. The joy, the wonder, the awe, the eagerness - all these elements in the poetry and the Schubert settings are brought to life. Sometimes the exuberance is a little out of control. Should a shepherd on a rock welcome the coming of spring with such vivacity as we hear here? Some now regard Elizabeth Schumann as a technically inadequate singer, but three great virtues cannot be gainsaid. For a female singer with a light soprano voice, her diction is brilliantly clear. She also controls her tone expertly. And greatest of all perhaps is her astonishing breath control. I have yet to hear any other female singer who can get all the way through "Auf dem Wasser zu singer" taking a breath only at the end of every second line.

Irritating, possibly, to C21st century listeners might be the occasional swoops, whoops and pecks that typified this singer's art. I wish, too that someone had talked her out of her habit of occasionally ending a song with a kind of "dying fall". Critic John Steane, refers to this. when discussing her otherwise matchless performance of "Nacht und Traüme".

Production values are generally high in this incredibly inexpensive issue. One minor error is that two varying dates are given for the singer's birth year. A mention is made in the notes of Elisabeth Schumann's long held belief that she was descended from the famous soprano of Beethoven's time Henriette Sontag. Since she herself lived long enough to discover that this German soprano, whose surname was the same as her own mother's, was not her ancestor, it seems pointless to allude to the belief in the notes that accompany this CD.
