Thanks to a fortuitous intersection of talent and fate, 22-year-old Josh Groban hasn't finished his senior year in performing arts school but has already released his sophomore effort on a major major label. Fans of the young vocal phenom's debut will find much to enthrall them here, even if it nudges the singer closer to the center of producer/mentor David Foster's MOR pop sensibilities. Eschewing much of its predecessor's more overt classic-lite pretensions and pop-rock covers for a slate of dramatic, Eurocentric ballads that serve as a showcase for the singer's inviting baritone, Groban shrewdly positions himself as the American alternative to the Bocelli-Watson crossover axis. "Caruso" may find the singer falling short of its operatic inspiration, but "Oceano" and "My Confession" quickly showcase his true dramatic range (which seems to all but yearn for a bona fide Broadway musical challenge), while a vocal take of Bacalov's graceful "Il Postino" theme uses classical virtuoso Joshua Bell's violin flourishes to good effect. To his credit, Groban displays some promising efforts at songwriting collaboration on the bittersweet "Per Te" and "Remember When It Rains," while the ambient/ethnic soundscape of Deep Forest's "Never Let Go" offers a teasing alterna Captain Tsubasa, tome 8 : La Renaissance d'un champion ! !

Put together by Abba's own Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, Mamma Mia! manages to cram over 20 of the Swedish supergroup's songs into a threadbare plot. It goes a little like this: Young Sophie is getting married and she's trying to identify which of three men is her father. That's about it. Wisely, the musical doesn't mess around with the songs, save for the insertion of some dialogue or for having some of them performed by a man (it works amazingly well). Abba fans will jump on this import of the London production, but traditional fans of musical theater should consider it as well. After all, Andersson and Ulvaeus's songs have always felt as if they were more than isolated pop gems and actually belonged to a longer narrative. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars Mamma Mia Musical CD.......2007-03-21

This is a grand list of songs from the original musical when it was first introduced in England. The songs from ABBA are very recognizable even if you haven't seen the show. But, making a trip to NY to see the Broadway production is a plus. ENJOY!

4 out of 5 stars JUST GREAT MUSIC.......2007-03-08

I RECENTLY SAW THE SHOW MAMMA MIA IN LAS VEGAS. ALWAYS LIKES THE MUSIC OF ABBA, AND THOUGH THE PLOT WAS THIN, THE MUSIC WAS WELL PERFORMED. IN THIS PARTICULAR ALBUM, THE ENGLISH ACCENTS WERE A BIT MUCH, BUT THE SONGS WERE GREAT. ALL I CAN SAY IS THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC, ABBA.

5 out of 5 stars Mamma Mia.......2007-01-29

Every time I hear the music and songs it brings back memories of seeing the Broadway Show

1 out of 5 stars Not good at all.......2007-01-09

This is not what we wanted. The British accents throw it was off. We just saw it in NY and this is not what we were looking for.

Highlight versions of cast recordings are by definition a compromise, and this reduction of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera is no exception. Weighing in at 59 minutes, it's over 40 minutes shorter than the two-disc version, excising many musical scenes that convey the flow and impact of the show (which include, admittedly, a lot of patter and screaming). On the other hand, all the hits are here--"Think of Me," "Angel of Music," the title tune, "The Music of the Night," "All I Ask of You," "Masquerade," and "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again"--and Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman are still on hand to make their distinctive contributions to the original London cast. So if you're looking for a convenient, inexpensive single disc that will let you enjoy Lloyd Webber's scrumptious melodies without having to immerse yourself in the action, this just might be for you. --David Horiuchi

I really liked the idea of a highlights cd; however, The Music of the Night is not the same one that is on the original two-disc cd. The words aren't even the same. If you enjoy Music of the Night, skip this cd. Otherwise, this cd would be 5 stars.

ringtone88.com rity. Irving Jacobson turns in a fine comic performance as the Don's faithful squire, Sancho Panza. The score, with music by Mitch Leigh and lyrics by Joe Darion, was revolutionary in its time. The orchestra had no violins--just brass, woodwinds, percussion, and flamenco guitars. Man of La Mancha is one of Broadway's most inspiring musicals and it well deserves its high reputation. --Michael Simmons

3 out of 5 stars Check out Other Versions. Don't be swayed by Others' Reviews........2007-06-09

I've never seen this show on stage and my first exposure to the music was the Sony CD Man of La Mancha featuring Placido Domingo, Pandy Patankin, and Julia Migenes-Johnson. Despite lackluster reviews of the disk, I enjoy it, and when I saw this version at a second hand book/music store, I decided check it out too. My initial impression was that the Sony version was the better disk but decided to compare both versions by setting up a playlist in Media Player, playing tracks from both version back-to-back.

After that test, I have to agree with the reviews here that Richard Kiley is the superior Don Quixote. Domingo's voice is, of course wonderful, but Kiley acts the role better on the CD and Domingo's accent is a major distraction.

In the role of Aldonza - no contest. Julia Mingenes-Johnson's singing and performance on the Sony version is far superior to Joan Diener's. I didn't have to hear the tracks back-to-back to realize that. Ms. Diener's performance just grated on my ears from the beginning.

Bucking the crowd, I prefer Mandy Patankin's Sancho (Sony version) to Irving Jacobson's. I may be biased, having had more exposure to the Sony version, but Patankin seemed to be trying to inject a bit more feeling into the character. Jacobson, singing in an annoying, scratchy voice, came across almost like a cartoon trying to fit in among live characters. It seems like most people either like Patankin or hate him. Guess I'm one of the former.

The Orchestration does seem brighter/clearer in this version compared to the Sony version, but, in general, the tempo on most tracks seems slower than the same tracks on the Sony version. I preferred the up-tempo, Sony versions of "The Barber Song", "Little Bird, Little Bird", "The Dubbing" and "A Little Gossip".

In Summary: For Kiley's Don Quixote, you'll probably want this version, but for tracks featuring Aldonza (and maybe Sancho) you'll want to check out the Sony version. Since I have both disks, I will probably come up with a mix of my favorite tracks, in general, favoring the Sony disk but substituting the tracks that feature Richard Kiley's Don Quixote where I can.

5 out of 5 stars beautiful music for a haunting story............2007-06-07

I remember reading excerpts from Cervantes' DON QUIXOTE, as a Spanish student, way back in junior high school. The saga of the madman fighting windmills and pursuing his illusions [and delusions] was very sad, but very romantic at the same time. When the musical adaptation, MAN OF LA MANCHA, was brought to the stage in 1965, Richard Kiley (as the title character, Don Quixote) absolutely transfixed the audience with his sensitively heartfelt portrayal of the tragic madman. The plight of Don Quixote, who travels on horseback, with his faithful companion, Sancho Panza (Irving Jacobson), and absolutely lovestruck by kitched wench Aldonza (Joan Denier), is alternately pathetic and profound. Perhaps one of the best known (and most remade) songs in the repertoire from LA MANCHA, is "The Impossible Dream." Richard Kiley really make it his own, here, and after you hear his version, it's hard to listen to others' versions of it. It's just not the same. Though, this story is anything but joyful, the music will glide through your ears and carry you on a surrealistic journey through attempted triumph and (ultimately) tragedy.

5 out of 5 stars Don Quixote.......2006-09-14

Back in High School my band leader, Mr. DeYoung, decided (agianst much opposition from those of us in the band let me tell you) to have us perform select pieces from this musical

I hated the idea. But when we began to play, he even had us watch the musical, I fell in love with the melody. The many songs of a man who believes the best in the world. YOu find that in Dulcinea, The Impossible Dream, etc.

From one maginificently rendered song to another, you can be lost in its melodic elegance.

My favorite song is the initial rendition of 'Little Bird, Little Bird'. It's a soft song, sung as a love ballad. In the musical you discover it's being sung to a local whore by a bunch of randy men. Despite that, I still like it.

This along with others are among the great works of the stage!

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent voices.......2006-07-05

Voices and music make a revival of this beautiful play. Full of passion.

Sarah Brightman's career was launched by her success in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera, so it's no surprise to hear the soprano paying homage to the composer on this disc. Really a Brightman best-of, the album includes the Phantom theme (a duet with Michael Crawford), the light-opera fare of "Chanson D'enfance" from Aspects of Love, "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina" from Evita, and numerous other Lloyd Webber classics. Simultaneously serving as both endless fodder for intellectual debates and the album most likely to be blaring out of the adjacent car's window, All Eyez on Me is a phenomenon that packs a wallop with every listen. Unquestionably the most nihilistic album to top the Billboard charts--and it's doubtful that any will match it--Eyez also manages to dish out the good-times dance tunes and still flow seamlessly. Recording commenced within hours of Tupac Shakur's release from prison, and a year's worth of pent-up ideas are unleashed with a fury akin to lifting the lid on a box of plutonium. The line between high art and insufferable reality, possibilities and self-destruction, has never been so blurred. Eyez is a landmark achievement that is unlikely to be topped by any heir apparent to the hip-hop crown. --Gregg Turkington

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars 2PAC is a Revolutionary!!!.......2007-07-26

2PAC could have lived a story of success in the music world or in Hollywood, for that matter. Talented, presentable and above all else, Socially Conscionable. A tragic and forceful figure of the modern era able to put it all into lyrics. Prison term certainly adding the final touch, I think. 2PAC was not a congenial kind of guide to a lot of people and I am certain that is why he was finally killed. This guy was a "creative force" to be reckoned with, the language of the streets his most decisive weapon. His fertile mind his source. But the music sucks! If you take all the words out and just play the music this album is below par. A lot of sequenced sections, same notes played over and over with very rare exceptions. Rap is mostly a beat, I think I understand, and all it requires is the delivery of the words. Truly a world onto itself and God knows there are some monster rappers! But very few create their own music and play it with passion and skills. To the point that the music could stand alone if necessary if only to prove that music and rap can and should go hand to hand. How long can you repeat the same background music, or listen to drum machines before you start missing great sounds?! That said, 2PAC is undoubtedly one of my heroes for here is a man that had it going on and chose to keep challenging the forces that be. He could have sold out and age gracefully but he opted to be a Revolutionary! His Bros must be very proud of him and his enemies can probably kiss his ass for they were not the ones who were on the Spotlight! 5 Stars for his Talent but the music no more than a 3 Stars equals 4 Stars? PS Everyone in the album with him sounded so awesome, he must have been surrounded by Excellent Bros'!

5 out of 5 stars A true masterpiece in every sense of the word........2007-07-05

Tupac was a true MC and poet. His improvisations and lyrics were second to none. I always said that he was the Gil Scott Heron and Curtis Mayfield of his generation because he was so insightful and knowledgable about different things from the industry itself to the politics and injustices that exist in the communities across the country. "All Eyez on me" is a true masterpiece and is my personal favorite Tupac Shakur album.

3 out of 5 stars Could Have Been a Great One Disc Album... Spread Across Two It Drags On Too Much..........2007-06-14

This album starts off great. Disc one is filled with tons of excellent material that is among the best work Pac has put out. In fact, the only track I wasn't feeling was 'How Do U Want It' with K-Ci and JoJo. Many of the tracks featured on disc one are straight up classics, such as the well-done single 'California Love (Remix)' with Dr. Dre. 'Got My Mind Made Up' is my personal favorite track on this album, and it features Redman and Method Man, who do an excellent job here. The rest of the songs on disc one range from good to excellent. I would give disc one at least a four star rating.

Disc two, however, is run of the mill 2pac affair and is filled with numerous boring and mundane tracks that really drag this set down. The opener on disc two, 'Can't C Me' which features funk legend George Clinton is definitely a highlight, and 'When We Ride' featuring the Outlawz is pretty good as well. However, the bulk of the second disc is extremely mediocre and forgettable.

This collection is still worth owning for disc one, but approach the second half of the album with caution. I found 2pac's later post-death release 'Until the End of Time' to have more worthwhile content than this release.

Stand out tracks: 'Got My Mind Made Up', '2 Of Amerikaz Most Wanted', 'California Love' (remix)

5 out of 5 stars All Eyez on Pac.......2007-06-09

2Pac changed his style a bit from his previous release Me Against the World as he was now aligned with the most powerful hip hop label in the world, Death Row. He hits a grand slam for gangsta rap with this one. He shows his great aggression on the mic and collaborates extremely well with Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre to make classic joints like 2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted and California Love. This is one of the greatest albums ever released not just from the West Coast, but hip hop in general.

5 out of 5 stars All Eyez were on him.......2007-05-08

Im going to be brief. Upon his release from prison Tupac drops a double album classic All Eyez On Me. Even though its missing the political Pac I knew from 2pacalypse Now and Strictly For My N***az, it is nevertheless a great album that I still bump from time to time. Standout Tracks on Discs 1&2:AMBITIONZ OF A RIDAH, GOT MY MIND MADE UP(classic matchup with the Dogg Pound, Method Man and Redman), HOW DO YOU WANT IT, 2 OF AMERIKAZ MOST WANTED, NO MORE PAIN, HEARTZ OF MEN, ONLY GOD CAN JUDGE ME, TRADIN WAR STORIES, CALIFORNIA LOVE REMIX(RIP ROGER TROUTMAN), I AINT MAD AT CHA, CANT C ME, HOLLA AT ME, PICTURE ME ROLLIN, CHECK OUT TIME, ALL EYEZ ON ME(was once an anthem out here and rightfully so) and RUN THA STREETZ. Filler: The only song I cant feel is Heaven Aint Hard 2 Find. Bottom Line: 2pac dropped two classics The Seven Day Theory and All Eyez On Me. His rhymes were still sharp(even though the political side is missing)and the production was super. All in all one of the best double albums ever made. One last thing I never compared him to Malcolm X or Martin Luther King Jr but this son of a panther is not just another rapper you fool! G-Dep, House Of Pain, Lil Flip, Lil Jon(yeah right he is a hypeman)Tony Yayo etc are just rappers. Tupac, Krs-One,Chuck D, Immortal Technique,Rass Kass, Dead Prez, The Coup, Paris, Ice Cube(the old one), X-Clan, Sunz of Man, T-Kash, Uno The Prophet are all over and beyond your silly rappers and if you think all these soldiers are just rappers you need to stick to bubble gum bull**** you're used to. Next time talk what you know which is absolutely nothing which means you'll be keeping your mouth closed for a while!

ringtone88.com Backdraft and Gladiator (overrated) were very good, but this score is a departure from Hans' usual motifs. The only bad part for me(not related to the music itself) is that there are only seven tracks and each are very long. I like shorter tracks so I can pinpoint the themes or variations I want to lsiten to, but this is extremely minor. The music is great, and I reccommend you go enjoy Hans' best music yet.

The original 1978 Broadway cast recording of Stephen Schwartz's Working has long been awaited on CD, and this great-sounding 2001 release proves it was worth the wait. Surely one of the more unlikely sources for a musical was Studs Terkel's 1972 book that compiled interviews of American working people discussing their jobs and what they liked and disliked about them. Schwartz transformed these interviews into a series of songs written by himself, Craig Carnelia, Mary Rodgers and Susan Birkenhead, Micki Grant, and pop singer James Taylor, and accordingly the variety of songs is as great as the variety of the workers featured. There's the lyric beauty of "The Mason," the rueful "Just a Housewife," the retiree's wry "Joe," the waitress's lilting "It's an Art," Taylor's pop-country "Brother Trucker," and the powerful emotion of "Fathers and Sons," realized by a compelling cast that features David Patrick Kelly, Joe Mantegna, Bob Gunton, and Lynne Thigpen, among others.

Six bonus tracks include a new version of the grocery checker song written for the 1999 L.A. Theatreworks production, Carnelia and Grant performing their own songs (unfortunately, Grant's track comes from a poor-quality audio source), and Schwartz's moving performance of "Fathers and Sons" from 1999's The Stephen Schwartz Album. Also welcome are 2001 notes from Schwartz paired with 1978 notes from Terkel, and a detailed listing of the composers and performers of each song. Working was filmed for American Playhouse in 1982. --David Horiuchi

4 out of 5 stars An underrated musical.......2006-03-16

This musical seems to be very underrated, because it isn't done in a traditional style. There is no set storyline or characters. It is essentially a grouping of songs about different people and the work they do in their lives. Some of the songs are very powerful, like "Millworker", and some are just fun, like "Lovin' Al". Some songs date the recording, as songs like "Brother Trucker", while good, have a bit of a synthesized 70's feel. The majority of the songs are more traditional.

I saw this show done by my high school years ago, so maybe it holds a bit of nostalgia for me, but it is definitely worth checking out.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Lesser Known Gem.......2005-12-26

I have never seen Working, but would love to, and I would love to perform it so as to revive interest in it. I found out about this recording from an online site, and I fell in love with it. It's a very modern style musical although from 1978. Were it on Broadway today, it would still be revelent to today's working class. My favorite number probably has to be "It's An Art", just because of its sheer fun. I could listen to that song all day and never get bored with it. I do, however, find "Brother Trucker" to be a bit tiring, and "Neat To Be A Newsboy" is just plain old, outdated, and ANNOYING! Other than that, wonderful ablum for an almost forgetten show.

5 out of 5 stars Keep Working!!!.......2004-06-12

I had the privilege of seeing a production of this wonderful musical at L.A. Valley College in May 2004. I quickly fell in love with the songs and the entire premise of the musical. Now, with this CD, I can finally sing along to all the brilliant songs over and over again, belting them out like there is no tomorrow.

What makes Working so special is that anyone can relate to the lyrics, they are powerful, beautiful, touching, and extremely real. Anyone who has ever worked a day in their life will feel the lyrics hit close to home. Whether you're a housewife, a valet parker, a fireman, a millworker, a teacher, a cleaning woman, or even a hooker, this musical has a place for you, no matter what job you do.The emotion, sincerity, and love expressed in the songs are amazing, and they are all extremely unique and a pure joy to listen to.

All the songs are fantastic but the stand-outs have to be "All the Live Long Day," "Just a Housewife," "If I Could've Been," "It's An Art," "Father's and Sons," "Cleaning Women," and "Something to Point to." I also have a soft spot for "Brother Trucker" and "I'm Just Movin" from the 1999 revival, which I am so grateful is included in this CD. This is a terrific, feel-great album everyone should listen to. Give Working a chance, it's worth it.

4 out of 5 stars a good, if obscure CD.......2003-09-26

i admit that this is an obscure musical, but nevertheless i found myself in a production of WORKING as Grace, the millworker. upon listening to the cd, i found that each song characterized the character well. the newsboy song is NOT annoying and my favourite songs are "its an art", "cleaning women", "if i could've been" and "lovin al". I would only recommend this CD for a real musical theatre afficionado, as those who don't appreciate the beauty of a musical won't understand these songs.

    From Amazon.com

Anne Murray, whose singular voice made her a country-pop icon in the 1970s and '80s, returns with a dual-disc set of 16 of her greatest hits, paired with 15 Tin Pan Alley pop standards. While her own signature tunes ("Snowbird," "Danny's Song") withstand time's brutal test in artistry and currency, Murray doesn't fare nearly as well with the pre-World War II tunes. She finds the modern blues heart of "What'll I Do," but she's often sidetracked by cheesy arrangements (the Dixieland treatment of "After You've Gone" is particularly onerous), and ultimately the collection fails to engage. Such hoary songs as "Dream a Little Dream of Me" and "You Made Me Love You" are too quaint and schmaltzy for a woman who came of age in the 1970s. Unlike the great Rosemary Clooney, who could infuse the most shopworn classic with new meaning, overall, Murray lacks the emotional resonance or experience in her voice to convey authenticity. Her corduroy alto remains a thing of wonder, however, and may make even her most casual fans yearn to hear it employed on a stellar album of contemporary material. --Alanna Nash

5 out of 5 stars Something for everyone!.......2007-05-17

This Anne Murray collection has something for just about every music fan-all of her biggest hits are here, along with some wonderful standards. Give this collection a listen-I think you'll like what you hear.

    5 out of 5 stars I love this CD.......2006-11-03

Anne sings some old standards that I can listen to over and over.
I bought this CD set because of a few of the songs on it, but I
discovered that there was more here for me to like, and that
Anne Murray is much better an artist than I had realized.

4 out of 5 stars More standards from the Canadian songbird.......2006-09-04

At the outset, I've got to say that I am a very big Anne Murray fan. I, for one, though, am itching for an Anne Murray album of new material. The last such album came in 1996-- ten years ago.

Whether by her own choice or by commercial realities, Anne has released only pop, country, gospel, and Christmas standards albums since then. At this point, standards albums have flooded the market. Though Anne has contributed to that, there is a little doubt that she has a fondness for the material-- and that she is especially qualified to interpret it.

For those who liked Croonin', What a Wonderful World, What a Wonderful Christmas, and Country Croonin'-- you will also like this album. The arrangements, vocals, and overall quality are in line with those previous albums. If you haven't bought any of these, the one that stands out is the first-- Croonin'.

This album, then, is not one to surprise. Of the songs, my favorite is What I'll Do. Anne's version of Over The Rainbow is one that stands out. I also like As Time Goes By, Twilight Time, and My Buddy. The big band arrangement of After You've Gone has generated a difference of opinion-- count me in the group that likes it.

In the end, this is a good album, but not a great nor memorable one. Overall, I give it 4 stars. On a tougher comparison to other Anne Murray albums, I'd rate it a 3.

3 out of 5 stars Greatest hits plus a mixed bag of American standards .......2006-02-07

Purchase this 2-CD set for the first disc, which features sterling remasters of most if not all of her greatest hits. The second disc holds far less appeal. Murrary warbles pre-WWII ditties like "What'll I Do" and "Somewhere Over the Rainbow". Problem is, she doesn't have the voice, the reach or the emotional resonance to perform most of them. With maybe two exceptions, they are performed in the most perfunctory manner; they sound like throwaways, whether she intended them to or not. If you thought this was going to be a sequel to CROONIN', her wonderful collection of post-WWII standards, you will be sadly let down. If you want to hear those songs modernized and done right, listen to Harry Nilsson's interpretations, available on both the original album A LITTLE TOUCH OF SCHMILSSON and the 2-CD Australian set, THE BEST OF HARRY NILSSON (and this includes SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW, which was cut from the original album).

5 out of 5 stars REAL DANCE TUNES FOR "COUPLES"..........2006-01-05

This 2CD set just arrived - have played the first CD four times, just love it!!! Real dance numbers for couples who remember what it's like to dance "together" - back in the days when a guy held a gal and got around the dance floor. Anne Murray is a great singer and I go way back with her albums. On this her new CD "All of Me" she does wonderful arrangements of all those standards and classics. Just put in on, grab your partner, dance up a storm, or just sit and listen, or join in with Anne, harmonize away, takes you back!!! I recommend this CD to folks that are older than baby boomers - mostly because of the first CD - but the younger folks, they too could learn to love these tunes, so many new artits today have "seen the light" and are doing old the old standby songs, with great success!

On Gershwin Fantasy, Joshua Bell's Stradivari embraces the lyrical spirit of Gershwin's Porgy and Bess with more success than most vocalists. Accompanied by the London Symphony Orchestra, Bell's violin literally sings through "It Ain't Necessarily So," "Summertime," "I Got Rhythm," and "Love Is Here to Stay," while John Williams (Saving Private Ryan, Schindler's List) serves double duty as conductor and pianist on several tracks. Three Preludes employs the violin and piano transcription by Jascha Heifetz, a longtime Gershwin friend, and features Bell at his jazziest. Even Gershwin himself--well, the recording of a 1926 piano roll of the composer--joins the virtuoso on the swinging "Sweet and Low-Down." --Jason Verlinde
